When the announcement hit that Paul Feig remake was going to helm a “Ghostbusters” reboot and that the all-male cast of the original was going to be replaced by an all-female ensemble, the internet freaked. On one side of the aisle was definite praise for a step forward in Hollywood’s neverending battle with gender equality, but on the other side of the spectrum there was the massive backlash from fans of the original.

The events of the last several weeks, while horrible, raise several issues that affect us not only as citizens, but as creative people and fans of the popular arts.
How do we respond to racism and other forms of bigotry in our government. Do we cooperate and try to change the minds of the people in power? Do we quit and make a statement? Do we resist? Do we perform non-violent acts of civil disobedience and fill the jails?
In my life, I’ve advocated (and disagreed with) all of these things. Different times in my life, different circumstances, different perspectives. Therefore, I hesitate to call out people who make different choices than I do, as long as we share the goals of a fair and just, egalitarian, non-hateful non-violent society.

When Jessica Chastain condemned cinematic portrayals of women after spending 10 days as a Cannes Film Festival juror, Maggie Gyllenhaal had deja vu: She had a similar experience as a member of the Berlin International Film Festival’s jury in February. After watching 25 movies in two weeks, the actress grew frustrated.
“There were some amazing performances by women, but one of them was about this woman obsessed with her lover, and in two others, the women were mentally ill,” she said. “So I really related to what Jessica Chastain said. In my life, I think there have been very few representations of women that feel like something I can actually recognize as relating to my experience.”
Now, as a producer on both of her upcoming projects, she’s finding a new way to address that challenge.

Eva Longoria is a woman of many hats.
Not just because she dons an assortment of them as Margot Beste-Chetwynde, a feminist and bourgeois widow, in the 1930s-set miniseries Decline and Fall, premiering in the U.S. Monday, May 15 on Acorn TV. But Longoria, who funded her quinceañera working at a Wendy's in her hometown of Corpus Christi, Texas, at 15 years old, is a bona fide go-getter.
That same moxie eventually landed the 42-year-old stalwart her breakout role as the amusingly self-obsessed, gardener-bedding Gabrielle Solis on ABC's juicy dramedy Desperate Housewives. Later, she worked behind the camera, producing and directing episodes of Lifetime's Devious Maids and NBC's short-lived romp Telenovela, which also cast her as a lurid soap star.

Allow RaeLynn to reintroduce herself.
It's been more than five years since the country darling first caught Blake Shelton's ear with her Pistol Annies-inspired blind audition on The Voice's second season. "I heard this voice start to sing, and it was familiar, but it was also like something I'd never heard before," Shelton tells Et. "Instantly, she looked like a star standing there -- an unexplainable thing that she has about her that separates her from everybody else in the world."
Then just 17 years old, competing for Team Blake, RaeLynn was ultimately sent home by her coach during the competition's quarterfinals. And that's when the real work began.
"I went straight back to Nashville, started writing Monday through Friday, then got my butt in a van," the 22-year-old tells Et. "I went to every country radio station in the U.S., got ready in gas stations, lived off Starbucks and Chick-fil-a -- that's how it...

On the evening of March 8, famed producer George Martin passed away at home, in his sleep, at age 90. (The announcement was first made on Ringo Starr's Twitter account.) He is, of course, primarily famous as the Beatles' producer, but I was heartened to see many friends in my Facebook feed chose to mark his passing by posting non-Beatles tracks he produced. Martin was a well-established, and well-rounded, producer before he started working with the Beatles. In his career the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee worked in quite a variety of contexts with any number of famous people, from comedy records with Peter Sellers to jazz records with Stan Getz, and practically everything in between.
The Beatles would undoubtedly have become famous without him -- and perhaps he without them -- but they wouldn't have sounded as good. Who else at that time would have made a Beatles record on...

Aside from signing the Beatles when no one else would - a laurel plenty of people would have been happy to rest on - he worked closely with the group in the studio, where he and Abbey Road engineer Geoff Emerick embarked on a series of musical innovations that made the Beatles' discography as groundbreaking as it was catchy. Behind many of our favorite independent films and the subsequent careers of their directors is the legendary Bob Hawk. Perhaps known to passionate followers of Kevin Smith as the man that discovered Clerks one morning in the basement of the Angelika Film Center, he used his connections to launch the director’s career. Hawk spread the word about the black-and-white, quick-witted Jersey shore comedy shot in a convenience store after hours.
We caught up with Hawk right after his biographical documentary, Film Hawk, premiered at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival. Check out the full conversation below.
The Film Stage: You’re a figure I’ve known about for years – Kevin Smith always credits you for starting his career. How did you get roped in to doing a documentary about yourself?
Bob Hawk: Well, I am known. I mean I have been on the scene for over 30 years in independent film.

February – The month of Luuuuurve. The month where every film channel goes nuts showing Hindi cinema’s most romantic films…the radio channels go nuts playing the dulcet tones of Sonu Nigaam, Alka Yagnik and everyone else in-between, and their various romantic numbers and the music channels swing between the sexy videos and the romantic videos. Why? All because of Valentine’s Day. The day for which businesses get a free license to decorate their premises with pink and red hearts and cute babies in nappies pointing a little arrow at you. And why would the film industry not join in with the madness with romantic or psycho-romantic films releasing in time for the big day.

In addition to the widespread attention the 10-part Making a Murderer documentary has brought to the cases of Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey, and the broader problems with America's criminal justice system, an interesting phenomenon has emerged: Several of the show's more tertiary characters have become mini-celebrities online. Women in particular seem to love Steven Avery's defense attorneys ("Dean Strang is the Coach Taylor of the Wisconsin legal community," one Twitter user writes; "If I had one of those lists of celebrities you're allowed to bone with impunity, I...

The Beatles arrived on streaming services earlier this week, and, as always, they’ve proven to be a massive hit. Billboard reports that, in the first two days of streaming, Beatles songs have been added to 673,000 playlists on Spotify—no word on how many of those are titled “dad’s first playlist.” But the band doesn’t just belong to the boomer generation, according to Billboard, 65% of Beatles listeners on Spotify are younger than 34, which means that, if you spent the holidays “rediscovering” your parents’ music, you’re not alone. Billboard also managed to track down the list of most-streamed Beatles singles, which confirms the preeminence of hits like “Come Together” and “Hey Jude,” reveals that people are still into less-flashy samples, like “Blackbird” and “In My Life,” and, not to brag, features a few of Vulture’s favorites as well:The top 10 Beatles tracks in the U.S.:1. After only two features, Reprise (2006) and Oslo, August 31st (2011), Norwegian director (by way of Denmark) Joachim Trier has not only reached the competition in the Festival de Cannes with his latest movie, Louder than Bombs, he has also crossed the Atlantic to make a film in American with an international cast. When Jim Bob Duggar became aware that his eldest son was allegedly molesting underage girls, the family decided to handle the incident privately instead of immediately reporting the accusations to police.
Sixteen months elapsed between the time Jim Bob learned of his son's self-admitted "wrongdoing" and Josh Duggar's official admission to Arkansas state trooper Cpl. It's appalling to have to say "Here we go again" when it comes to TLC pulling a show off the air due to child molestation claims, but this is the second time it's happened within a year. Last October, TLC pulled "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo" after the Mama June/Mark McDaniel scandal, and now they have yanked "19 Kids and Counting" after the Josh Duggar scandal.
On Thursday, 27-year-old Duggar responded to allegations that he molested five underage girls (including his sisters) when he was a teen. Josh; his parents, Jim Bob and Michelle; and Josh's wife, Anna all posted messages on Facebook. Here's Josh's statement:
Twelve years ago, as a young teenager I acted inexcusably for which I am extremely sorry and deeply regret. I hurt others, including my family and close friends. I confessed this to my parents who took several steps to help me address the situation.

Gabbar Akshay Kumar is all set to take on corruption in his upcoming Bollywood film Gabbar Is Back which is set to release this Friday, 1st May, 2015.
At an interview, ask the actor what made him pick a burning topic like corruption and he says, "Corruption is indeed a burning issue. I have never come across with anybody who is not being taken for a ride because of corruption, or who has bribed someone. There may be very few who would to say that he or she has not bribed anyone in their entire life. But at the end of the day the problem is that the work never gets accomplished; whether you get a passport, ration card or aadhar card made, people get trapped somewhere or the other because the life is so fast people don't bother much. This is a real and practical fact. However, Gabbar doesn't deal with those kinds of problems,...

Above Average is no stranger to really amazing comedy pieces. The online video branch of Saturday Night Live’s production company Broadway Video is continuing the laugh-fest by releasing Alec Baldwin’s new relationship web series Alec Baldwin’s Love Ride. In Love Ride, Baldwin stars as an “internationally-recognized relationship expert.” The 30 Rock actor invites couples into the back of his taxi cab in New York City. Aided by behind-the-scenes love advisor and Saturday Night Live sketch writer Paula Pell, Baldwin discusses “sex, take-out food, binge-viewing Broad City,” and other elements that hold people’s relationships together. The first couple to be quizzed is Corey and Francesca. “In my life, I've always wanted to help people avoid some of the mistakes I've made,” says Baldwin to Corey and Francesca, a rather honest admission for an otherwise amusing and light-hearted web series. Love Ride is the brainchild of Baldwin, who co-produces...
