The Lonely Island‘s Jorma Taccone is in good company for his next directorial project as Ben Schwartz and Sam Rockwell board the upcoming Searchlight comedy DNA. News about Taccone joining DNA as the film’s director and producer comes after he recently launched production in Finland for The Trip, an upcoming thriller starring Jason Segel and Samara Weaving.
Plot details for DNA remain a mystery, though we know Schwartz sold the concept to Searchlight in 2020. Schwartz wrote the script, while Ali Bell, Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Taccone produced through their Party Over Here studio. Rockwell gets in on the action as an executive producer alongside Schwartz.
Taconne’s other directorial efforts include shorts and music videos for The Lonely Island, Parks and Recreation, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, Miracle Workers, The Last O.G., and Paramount’s Knuckles series. His upcoming thriller, The Trip, revolves around a troubled couple who visit an isolated cabin.

Hollywood anarchist and noted nudist Jack Nicholson saw his career flash before his eyes in the mid-1980s as the era’s most popular movies totally confounded him. In a 1986 interview with The New York Times, Nicholson was asked if he felt “like a creative person trapped in an uncreative age in the industry.”
''Well, you know,” Nicholson replied, “last night I saw — what’s that movie? Ferris something?”
Was Nicholson referring to Ferris Bueller’s Day Off? Anyone? Anyone?
“Well, that movie made me feel totally irrelevant to anything that any audience could want, and 119 years old,” he explained.
To make matters worse, it felt like the audience was on John Hughes’ side of the argument. “Believe me, everyone else watching it liked it,” he said. “And you know, I literally walked out of there thinking my days are numbered. These people are trying to kill me.”

As far as movies based on SNL sketches go, A Night at the Roxbury probably had the least to work with. Wayne’s World, MacGruber and even It’s Pat had well-defined characters with reliable bits. The Night at the Roxbury guys, however, didn’t even have names, which is why Steve Koren, who wrote the breakout SNL sketch for those characters, was surprised when Clueless director Amy Heckerling wanted to make a movie about two idiots who aggressively danced up on women in night clubs.
But soon thereafter, Koren, along with Will Ferrell and Chris Kattan who played and created the characters, got to work on the script that would become A Night at the Roxbury.
I recently spoke to Koren about how the original draft was inspired by Saturday Night Fever, how the Marx Brothers contributed to the film’s title and how they sought to include every slang term...

As Saturday Night Live marks its 50th anniversary, Seth Meyers is fondly looking back at his onscreen love story.
The Late Night host called Bill Hader‘s long-running ‘Weekend Update’ character Stefon “my one true love” as he listed his top five favorite SNL characters in honor of the NBC sketch comedy show’s milestone season.
He listed the rest of his top five as Will Forte‘s MacGruber, Kate McKinnon‘s Colleen Rafferty, Eddie Murphy‘s Buckwheat and Rachel Dratch‘s Debbie Downer, as he appeared on Watch What Happens Live.
Meyers’ number-one pick should come as no surprise after he married the “city correspondent” in Hader’s 2013 farewell episode, breaking up Stefon’s wedding to Anderson Cooper in an epic sketch filled with all of the character’s bizarre references, including a Ben Affleck cameo.
Following his 2005-’13 run on SNL, Hader has returned to ‘Weekend Update’ as Stefon on a few occasions.

Saturday Night Live‘s golden year is reuniting cast members past for some new laughs.
This weekend, SNL alums and musical comedy trio The Lonely Island made a surprise appearance with their new song ‘Sushi Glory Hole’, the group’s first digital short on the sketch comedy show in six years.
A la 2006’s Emmy-winning “D— in a Box,” the song’s title is pretty self-explanatory, featuring Akiva Schaffer and Andy Samberg (Jorma Taccone is not featured but is credited as a writer) in their finest Wolf of Wall Street attire, pitching their new concept to a group of investors.
‘Sushi Glory Hole, imagine that / Instead of strange d—, you’ll be getting a snack,” raps Samberg during their pitch, complete with a tiny model.

“SNL sucks now” isn’t as fresh a complaint as you might think. This sentiment was even a matter of public discourse way back in the early ‘90s, as evidenced by the not-so-cleverly titled 1994 Entertainment Weekly article, “Is Saturday Night Dead?”
The magazine wasn’t alone in expressing concern for the long-running comedy series during its 19th season. The New York Daily News noted that SNL would have to try and “find a desperately needed fresh sense of identity” following the loss of Dana Carvey and Chris Rock, and the announced departures of Phil Hartman, Julia Sweeney and Rob Schneider.
So EW offered up “20 suggestions” for “how to fix the show.” Looking back at this list, it’s amazing how spot-on some ideas are in retrospect — while others are laughably dated and arguably awful.
For starters, writer Bruce Fretts (who sadly passed away in 2020) suggested handing over the reins of Weekend Update to David Spade,...

Saturday Night Live is about to hit its 50th anniversary, so no better time to count down the 25 funniest stars!
Narrowing down the best actors in a show that's run for five decades and boasted nearly 150 cast members is a challenge, to say the least. SNL has had its ups and downs over the years, with some periods boasting fantastic, brilliant comedic talents and others so low that many believed the show would be canceled. It's still survived, all thanks to that revolving cast of actors capable of pulling off these skits every week.
Many have gone on to become huge stars in movies and television and even bigger comics. Yet their SNL tenures often showed them at their best, with some standing taller than others. It's hard to figure it out, but here's how the 25 funniest SNL cast members of all time fall out as a stunning reminder of the show's legacy.

One of the most memorably brilliant creative choices behind the MacGruber movie was the casting of Val Kilmer as the dastardly Dieter von Cunth. Not only is Kilmer an icon of ‘80s and ‘90s action movies, but as Airplane! proved, putting dramatic actors in absurd roles is often way funnier.
But Kilmer wasn’t the only name that was floated for the awkwardly-named villain. Apparently MacGruber came very close to battling the legendary actor who faced off against Batman, Adam Sandler and his own wife and child after a few stiff drinks served by a ghost: Jack Nicholson.
In the most recent episode of The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast, the trio discussed their work on “People Getting Punched Right Before Eating.” It wasn’t a metaphor or anything, it was literally about people getting punched right before eating.

Who hasn’t wanted to turn into a snarling, free-wheeling beast when the pressures of domestic life — hell, of life in general — get too much? Women have transformed into beasts throughout mythological history, but that wasn’t always a matter of choice. In Rachel Yoder’s bestselling 2021 novel, “Nightbitch,” that line is a bit fuzzier. Does our heroine become a dog because she wants to or because she has to?
That’s just one of the questions at the heart of filmmaker Marielle Heller’s latest film, which adapts Yoder’s story to the big screen. Like her breakout hit “The Diary of a Teenage Girl,” her fact-based grifter tale “Can You Ever Forgive Me?,” and her deep-feeling Mr. Rogers-centric feature “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” Heller’s latest explores the different facets of being a very real person in a very tough world. Sometimes that includes turning into a dog.

Exclusive: Vincent Kartheiser (Mad Men) and Laura Slade Wiggins (Shameless) have signed on to star alongside Landon Ashworth (Space Force) in Go On, a fantasy drama marking Ashworth’s feature directorial debut, which will enter production in New Mexico in September.
Marking Ashworth’s first produced feature screenplay, the film follows two strangers on a remote mountain, scorched by forest fires, as they help each other process baggage from their previous lives so they can transition to the afterlife. Ashworth crafted the screenplay after losing his very young cousin, Landon Bellm, to suicide.
“Having my feature film directorial debut be my own screenplay which addresses real, meaningful, and relatable issues is an honor,” Ashworth told Deadline. “Also, having the opportunity to work with Vincent is beyond a dream come true. I’ve followed his career for over a decade and knew he needed to play the co-lead of this movie.

The animated "Sausage Party" was not only one of the funniest movies of 2016, but it was easily one of the most graphic comedies that has ever hit the big screen. Culminating in an all-out war between sentient food and humans, the movie ends with a celebratory orgy with groceries of all kinds just going to town on each other in every imaginable way. If they were human, it would be a porno movie, but it's ever so slightly more innocent when it's everyday food having all kinds of sex. But any modicum of innocence there might be goes completely out of the window in the recently released Prime Video animated series "Sausage Party: Foodtopia."
While the series has the gnarly violence and graphic sexual acts that made the "Sausage Party" so gross and funny, "Foodtopia" takes things to another level. Early on in the series, the foods take a human...

Seth Meyers has renewed his deal with NBCUniversal, cementing him as the host of “Late Night” through 2028.
The extension comes months after the renowned writer and comedian hit his 10-year anniversary as host; “Late Night With Seth Meyers” first launched in February 2014.
Meyers’ production company, Sethmaker Shoemeyers, has also extended its deal with Universal Studio Group to produce content across NBCUniversal platforms. The banner previously produced “A.P. Bio” for NBC and “The Amber Ruffin Show” for Peacock.
“Over the last 10 years, Seth has resonated with his audience night after night with a sharp monologue and established segments such as ‘A Closer Look’ and ‘Day Drinking,’” said Katie Hockmeyer, executive vice president of late night programming at NBCUniversal Entertainment. “We’re so happy to continue this legacy franchise with Seth at the helm and watch him continue to elevate the success of ‘Late Night.’”

Stefon Zelesky — movie star?
Seth Meyers said this week that a movie based on Bill Hader’s popular Saturday Night Live character was discussed but scrubbed, leaving the club kid who appeared on the late-night staple often from 2008-13, and a couple of times after, to linger only in fans’ memory. And YouTube (see below).
In an interview for Las Culturistas, the podcast hosted by comic actor Matt Rogers and SNL‘s Bowen Yang, the Late Night host said he would have had a small part in the pic but that his “Weekend Update” anchor would have died early on — after a long night of partying with Stefon. So someone else would have had to co-star.
“There was a moment in time where the idea of a Stefon script was being discussed,” he said. “This was not a scene that was written, but I did have a pitch for myself...

Please Don’t Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain is a coming-of-age adventure comedy film directed by Paul Briganti, from a screenplay by the Please Don’t Destroy guys Martin Herlihy, Ben Marshall, and John Higgins, who also stars as the three main leads in the film. The Peacock is the first SNL film since 2010’s MacGruber and I have to say that it doesn’t disappoint.
The Treasure of Foggy Mountain revolves around three childhood best friends Ben, John, and Martin who live and work together, but lately, John is getting the feeling that all of them are drifting apart. To get them all closer once again he takes them on a treasure hunt on the titular Foggy Mountain. This adventure is filled with hilarious gags, witty dialogues, and silly comedy which keeps you laughing from the beginning to the end.

If you’re wondering about the ungainly title of the new comedy film premiering on Peacock, then you’re probably not a sketch comedy aficionado or regular Saturday Night Live viewer. The first part of Please Don’t Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain refers to the comedy group consisting of 20-somethings Ben Marshall, John Higgins and Martin Herlihy, whose absurdist videos have been a regular feature on SNL for the past couple of years. The second part of the title calls to mind the sort of old-fashioned adventure movies geared toward kids that have inspired this ramshackle spoof reminding you that sketch comedy is best appreciated in small doses. For proof, look no further than such misfires as Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy, It’s Pat, MacGruber and, well, you get the idea.

Bill Hader knew the post-“SNL” club had everything — just not a Stefon movie in the works.
The “Barry” creator admitted to “a hundred percent” feeling pressure to pursue his standout “Saturday Night Live” character Stefon in a spinoff movie, in the veins of “Night at the Roxbury” and “MacGruber.”
“It’s this weird combination of being open, but also clearly knowing what you don’t want,” Hader told The New Yorker. “Like, nah, I don’t want to do a Stefon movie. It didn’t work as a sketch! That’s why it was on Weekend Update. And the reason people liked it is because I kept laughing.”
Hader departed “Saturday Night Live” in 2013.
“I’d just had a second child, and I just was kind of burnt out, and I knew I wanted to live in Los Angeles. I love New York, but it was that thing that...

Director Jorma Taccone's "MacGruber" was always destined to become a cult hit. The 2010 action-comedy movie is based on a recurring "Saturday Night Live" sketch in which Will Forte plays special ops agent MacGruber, the son of expert problem-solver Angus MacGyver from the popular 1980s TV show "MacGyver." Far from a chip off the old block, MacGruber is quite incompetent at his job and never fails to blow himself up while trying to disarm deadly explosives.
Taking things a step further, the "MacGruber" movie is a no-holds-barred satire of macho retro action film cliché. MacGruber himself is depicted in the movie as a mullet-ed, rip their throat out first, ask questions later type with a dark backstory whose fiancée was killed by his arch-enemy, Dieter Von Cunth (Val Kilmer). Of course, in one of the film's many Nsfw exchanges, MacGruber reveals his tragic past is, er, much less derivative than it sounds.

Peacock has revealed MacGruber is set to premiere on Dec. 16 with a first look teaser featuring stars Will Forte, Kristen Wiig, Ryan Phillippe, and Billy Zane.
The eight-episode action-comedy is based on Forte’s recurring MacGyver parody sketch on Saturday Night Live and its 2010 cult movie offshoot.
Co-written and executive produced by Forte, the series picks up after the titular character (Forte) was rotting in prison for over a decade and is finally free. His mission: to take down a mysterious villain from his past—Brigadier Commander Enos Queeth (Zane). With the entire world in the crosshairs, MacGruber must reassemble his old team, of Vicki St. Elmo (Wiig) and Dixon Piper (Phillippe) to defeat the forces of evil.
Zane’s Queeth is one of MacGruber’s mortal enemies. Long thought dead, he has resurfaced to carry out a heinous plot to destroy the world and, in the process, claim his revenge against MacGruber.
