The Lonely Island‘s Jorma Taccone is in good company for his next directorial project as Ben Schwartz and Sam Rockwell board the upcoming Searchlight comedy DNA. News about Taccone joining DNA as the film’s director and producer comes after he recently launched production in Finland for The Trip, an upcoming thriller starring Jason Segel and Samara Weaving.

Plot details for DNA remain a mystery, though we know Schwartz sold the concept to Searchlight in 2020. Schwartz wrote the script, while Ali Bell, Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Taccone produced through their Party Over Here studio. Rockwell gets in on the action as an executive producer alongside Schwartz.

Taconne’s other directorial efforts include shorts and music videos for The Lonely Island, Parks and Recreation, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, Miracle Workers, The Last O.G., and Paramount’s Knuckles series. The project is the second announced in two weeks for Taccone, who recently launched production in Finland on The Trip, a thriller starring Jason Segel and Samara Weaving. News of the film first broke in the summer of 2020, after Schwartz sold it to Searchlight as an untitled pitch, with Rockwell also cementing his involvement at that time.

DNA‘s logline is being kept under wraps. Schwartz wrote the script, with Ali Bell, Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Taccone to produce under their Party Over Here banner. Schwartz and Rockwell are the executive producers. SVP of Production Taylor Friedman and Creative Executive Cornelia Burleigh are overseeing the project for Searchlight Pictures, reporting to Heads of Production and Development DanTram Nguyen and Katie Goodson-Thomas.

Jason Segel, Samara Weaving, Timothy Olyphant and Juliette Lewis are taking “The Trip.” Jorma Taccone, a member of the Lonely Island comedy group and co-director of “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping,” is directing from a script by Nick Kocher and Brian McElhaney (BriTANicK).

If you’ve been following The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast, you’ve known that one third of The Lonely Island, Jorma Taccone, has been absent for the last few weeks while shooting a movie in Finland. Details of that movie have finally been announced.

Taccone will direct “The Trip,” a thriller and comedy film that stars Jason Segel, Samara Weaving, Juliette Lewis, and Timothy Olyphant, it was announced on Tuesday, November 19. Filming is currently taking place in Tampere, Finland and has been ongoing since October 23. Paul Guilfoyle and Keith Jardine also co-star.

This is Taccone’s first feature behind the camera since 2016’s “Pop Star: Never Stop Never Stopping,” which he co-directed with Akiva Schaffer. For this one he’ll partner with the team behind “The Fall Guy,” David Leitch and Kelly McCormick’s 87North production banner, and XYZ Films.

No distributor is attached for the film.

As far as movies based on SNL sketches go, A Night at the Roxbury probably had the least to work with. Wayne’s World, MacGruber and even It’s Pat had well-defined characters with reliable bits. The Night at the Roxbury guys, however, didn’t even have names, which is why Steve Koren, who wrote the breakout SNL sketch for those characters, was surprised when Clueless director Amy Heckerling wanted to make a movie about two idiots who aggressively danced up on women in night clubs.

The Late Night host called Bill Hader‘s long-running ‘Weekend Update’ character Stefon “my one true love” as he listed his top five favorite SNL characters in honor of the NBC sketch comedy show’s milestone season.

He listed the rest of his top five as Will Forte‘s MacGruber, Kate McKinnon‘s Colleen Rafferty, Eddie Murphy‘s Buckwheat and Rachel Dratch‘s Debbie Downer, as he appeared on Watch What Happens Live.

Meyers’ number-one pick should come as no surprise after he married the “city correspondent” in Hader’s 2013 farewell episode, breaking up Stefon’s wedding to Anderson Cooper in an epic sketch filled with all of the character’s bizarre references, including a Ben Affleck cameo.

Following his 2005-’13 run on SNL, Hader has returned to ‘Weekend Update’ as Stefon on a few occasions.

This weekend, SNL alums and musical comedy trio The Lonely Island made a surprise appearance with their new song ‘Sushi Glory Hole’, the group’s first digital short on the sketch comedy show in six years.

A la 2006’s Emmy-winning “D— in a Box,” the song’s title is pretty self-explanatory, featuring Akiva Schaffer and Andy Samberg (Jorma Taccone is not featured but is credited as a writer) in their finest Wolf of Wall Street attire, pitching their new concept to a group of investors.

“SNL sucks now” isn’t as fresh a complaint as you might think. This sentiment was even a matter of public discourse way back in the early ‘90s, as evidenced by the not-so-cleverly titled 1994 Entertainment Weekly article, “Is Saturday Night Dead?”

Andy Samberg is looking back on walking away from Saturday Night Live.

While appearing on Kevin Hart’s Peacock interview series Hart to Heart, the comedian recalled why he made the decision to quietly exit the comedy sketch series after seven seasons back in 2012.

“I was falling apart in my life,” he said, opening up about the exit all these years later. He called the decision to leave “a big choice” and though he didn’t want to leave, he couldn’t “endure it anymore.”

Samberg joined SNL in 2005. After seven years, his contract was up and he decided not to return after the 2011-2012 season wrapped, officially announcing his decision weeks after the finale.

Will Forte has been added to the cast of Netflix’s upcoming comedy “The Four Seasons,” opposite stars including Tina Fey and Steve Carell.

Fey, Lang Fisher and Tracey Wigfield are behind the series, based on the 1981 feature film that was written and directed by Alan Alda (who starred with Carol Burnett).

Forte was most recently seen in Netflix’s “Bodkin.” The “Saturday Night Live” alum’s credits include “Last Man on Earth,” “Sweet Tooth” and “MacGruber.” Besides Fey and Carell, previously announced cast members include Colman Domingo, Kerri Kenney-Silver and Erika Henningsen.

Seth Meyers has renewed his deal with NBCUniversal, cementing him as the host of “Late Night” through 2028.

The extension comes months after the renowned writer and comedian hit his 10-year anniversary as host; “Late Night With Seth Meyers” first launched in February 2014.

Meyers’ production company, Sethmaker Shoemeyers, has also extended its deal with Universal Studio Group to produce content across NBCUniversal platforms. The banner previously produced “A.P. Bio” for NBC and “The Amber Ruffin Show” for Peacock.

Seth Meyers said this week that a movie based on Bill Hader’s popular Saturday Night Live character was discussed but scrubbed, leaving the club kid who appeared on the late-night staple often from 2008-13, and a couple of times after, to linger only in fans’ memory. And YouTube (see below).

In an interview for Las Culturistas, the podcast hosted by comic actor Matt Rogers and SNL‘s Bowen Yang, the Late Night host said he would have had a small part in the pic but that his “Weekend Update” anchor would have died early on — after a long night of partying with Stefon. So someone else would have had to co-star.

The “Barry” creator admitted to “a hundred percent” feeling pressure to pursue his standout “Saturday Night Live” character Stefon in a spinoff movie, in the veins of “Night at the Roxbury” and “MacGruber.”

“It’s this weird combination of being open, but also clearly knowing what you don’t want,” Hader told The New Yorker. “Like, nah, I don’t want to do a Stefon movie. It didn’t work as a sketch! That’s why it was on Weekend Update. And the reason people liked it is because I kept laughing.”

Director Jorma Taccone's "MacGruber" was always destined to become a cult hit. The 2010 action-comedy movie is based on a recurring "Saturday Night Live" sketch in which Will Forte plays special ops agent MacGruber, the son of expert problem-solver Angus MacGyver from the popular 1980s TV show "MacGyver." Far from a chip off the old block, MacGruber is quite incompetent at his job and never fails to blow himself up while trying to disarm deadly explosives.

MacGruber himself is depicted in the movie as a mullet-ed, rip their throat out first, ask questions later type with a dark backstory whose fiancée was killed by his arch-enemy, Dieter Von Cunth (Val Kilmer). Of course, in one of the film's many Nsfw exchanges, MacGruber reveals his tragic past is, er, much less derivative than it sounds.

Well, shut yer butt. It looks like we get one more treat in the year of our Lord 2021 and that's the return of "MacGruber." The series will be launching on Universal's streaming service, Peacock, on December 16, and today we got a slew of images and even a trailer in the form of a jailhouse interview with Mac himself.

Will Forte returns as MacGruber, who has apparently spent the time since we last saw him rotting away in jail for his over-the-top dispatching of one Dieter Von Cunth (Val Kilmer). I'm on team Grubes ... Cunth did try to blow up the world and also...

MacGruber will be back on the cast next month.

Peacock has confirmed the highly anticipated TV follow-up of the movie will launch Thursday, December 16.

"After rotting in prison for over a decade, America’s ultimate hero and uber patriot MacGruber is finally released," reads the official logline.

"His mission: to take down a mysterious villain from his past—Brigadier Commander Enos Queeth."

"With the entire world in the crosshairs, MacGruber must reassemble his old team, Vicki St. Elmo and Dixon Piper, in order to defeat the forces of evil."

Will Forte will reprise his iconic role as MacGruber and will also write and executive produce.

The Peacock series is an adaptation of the 2010 feature film and cult favorite of the same title, which will also feature the original creative team behind the camera.

Amazon Prime Video announced the upcoming series “As We See It” will premiere all eight episodes on Jan. 21, 2022 and released a trailer for it.

The series follows 20-something roommates — Jack (Rick Glassman), Harrison (Albert Rutecki) and Violet (Sue Ann Pien), who are on the autism spectrum — as they strive to get jobs, make friends and fall in love. The trailer features each of the roommates tackling their goals, with the help of family and friends along the way. “I think you are such a beautiful person that you shouldn’t have to hide who you are,” says their aide Mandy (Sosie Bacon) to Jack. “That makes me want to throw up,” he responds.

Peacock has revealed MacGruber is set to premiere on Dec. 16 with a first look teaser featuring stars Will Forte, Kristen Wiig, Ryan Phillippe, and Billy Zane.

The eight-episode action-comedy is based on Forte’s recurring MacGyver parody sketch on Saturday Night Live and its 2010 cult movie offshoot.

Co-written and executive produced by Forte, the series picks up after the titular character (Forte) was rotting in prison for over a decade and is finally free. His mission: to take down a mysterious villain from his past—Brigadier Commander Enos Queeth (Zane). With the entire world in the crosshairs, MacGruber must reassemble his old team, of Vicki St. Elmo (Wiig) and Dixon Piper (Phillippe) to defeat the forces of evil.

Zane’s Queeth is one of MacGruber’s mortal enemies. Long thought dead, he has resurfaced to carry out a heinous plot to destroy the world and, in the process, claim his revenge against MacGruber.

Get ready to do some celebratory head-banging, because We Are Lady Parts is coming back.

Peacock announced Monday that it has renewed the comedy series for a second season, which will air on Channel 4 in the U.K.

NBCUniversal’s international flight plan for Peacock starts this week: Starting Nov. 16, Sky TV and Now customers in the U.K. and Ireland will get access to the streaming service for no additional fee.

Comcast had announced plans this summer to launch Peacock as a free add-on for Sky’s satellite TV customers in Europe, representing a base of close to 20 million households. According to NBCU, after the “soft launch” in the U.K. and Ireland, Peacock will continue to roll out across Sky platforms in territories including Germany, Italy, Austria and Switzerland in the next few months.

Sky TV customers and subscribers to the Now Entertainment package in the U.K. and Ireland will get “early access” to the new ad-supported Peacock destination, with original and library TV shows and movies from across NBCU although the content availability will differ from what’s available on Peacock in the U.

A “Pitch Perfect” series has been ordered at Peacock with Adam Devine onboard to reprise his role from the film franchise, Variety has learned exclusively.

The series is set several years after the events of the films. Devine returns as Bumper Allen, who moves to Germany to revive his music career when one of his songs becomes big in Berlin.

Bumper was the main antagonist of the first film and the leader of the all-male a cappella group The Treblemakers.
