Netflix released a huge amount of streaming data Tuesday — viewing totals for more than 18,000 movies and seasons of TV for the first half of 2023.
Taken as a whole, it’s almost an overwhelming amount of information that speaks to Netflix’s ability to engage its huge subscriber base (just under 239 million for the end of the period covered in the data dump) — and maybe not a ton more? The stats presented are for total hours viewed, which is how Netflix measures engagement across its portfolio — but it’s also not the metric the streamer uses to order its weekly top 10 lists. For those, it uses the “view” formula of total watch time divided by running time, which somewhat levels the playing field for films and series with shorter run times. (And there are, of course, economic factors and other metrics that influence decision-making that the company will continue to keep in house.

The South Korean TV phenomenon goes way beyond Squid Game, as revealed by Netflix’s newly-released landmark viewing data report.
Series from the Asian country such as The Glory, Physical: 100 and Extraordinary Attorney Woo feature consistently at the summit of the 18,200+ title viewership data report that the streamer released this week, our analysis of the chart reveals. Deadline has calculated that content from South Korea accounted for a combined 3.71 billion hours in the top 100 titles in Netflix’s chart. The table reveals viewing data from the first six months of 2023.
It should be noted that South Korean series tend to run longer than many other countries — 17 hours on average compared with nine for those from the U.S.

So much for the black box.
Netflix today has revealed viewership data for 99% of its entire catalog, or more than 18,000 titles available around the world. It published the numbers in a report, What We Watched, capturing viewing from January to June of 2023. It is the first edition of a planned semi-annual look at viewership. The initiative aims to document the the full picture instead of the existing glimpses of only the top-performing programming. The company pointed out that its existing Top 10 lists have a large degree of overlap with the full data, with 60% of the titles in the first-half study having made appearances in the Top 10 at some point.
“This is a big step forward for Netflix and our industry,” the company wrote in a blog post. “We believe the viewing information in this report — combined with our weekly Top 10 and Most Popular lists — will give creators and our industry deeper insights into our audiences,...

Netflix is expanding its viewership data transparency with the release of its first biannual report covering six months of streaming habits on the platform, revealing for the first time how licensed content like USA Network drama “Suits” performs alongside the streamer’s originals.
The new report, titled “What We Watched: A Netflix Engagement Report,” covers more than 18,000 titles and nearly 100 billion hours viewed between January-June 2023. It includes: 1) hours viewed for every title (both Netflix original and licensed TV shows and movies) watched for more than 50,000 hours during that period; 2) the premiere date for any Netflix original TV series or film; and 3) whether a title was available globally.
Each piece of that information is key here, because these findings aren’t as cut and dried as Netflix’s weekly Top 10 reports and “Most Popular” lists. For example, at the top of this report is “The Night Agent,” a series that debuted...

Arvin Chen is to direct “Coolie,” a limited series featuring enslaved Chinese workers in 19th century Cuba.
The eight-part series is the first to emerge from Cathay Film Company, a recent production venture launched by Singapore-based industry veteran Meileen Choo.
In the mid-1800s, when the African slave trade was outlawed throughout the Americas, plantation owners in Cuba instead began trafficking indentured servants from China and other parts of Asia. These, so-called coolies were often treated as slaves, but some integrated into Cuban society and joined the country’s fight for independence from Spain. The provided a low-cost workforce for farms, restaurants, factories and were instrumental in setting up Chinatowns across the world.

The season three (and potential series) finale of Ted Lasso delivered record streaming numbers for Apple TV+.
Viewers watched 1.24 billion minutes’ worth of the Emmy-winning comedy for the week of May 29-June 4 — the first time any show on Apple’s streaming service has topped a billion minutes. The season three finale, released May 31, accounted for 529 million of those minutes (about 42.5 percent of the total), which Nielsen says is the highest weekly total for a single episode of Ted Lasso.
Since it premiered in August 2020, Ted Lasso has drawn more than 25 billion minutes of viewing in the United States, per Nielsen. It was little surprise that the Chris Hemsworth action-sequel “Extraction 2” would lead Netflix’s Top 10 chart for the week of June 12, but the original “Extraction” ended up taking second place as viewers that missed it caught up before watching its sequel. It’s probably not getting an Oscar nominations anytime soon, but “The Mother” has bested Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” where it counts: Netflix viewership metrics. Jennifer Lopez’s thriller film has entered the streamer’s list of Top 10 most popular English-language films at No. 8, knocking Scorsese’s three-and-a-half hour mobster epic out of the upper echelon.
Netflix announced the news on Tuesday, along with the release of viewership numbers for the week of May 29 to June 4. “The Mother,” which has streamed for four weeks after premiering on Netflix May 12, has now been watched for a total of 229.30 million total hours by Netflix subscribers. That’s enough to place it between “Extraction” (231.340 million hours) and “Purple Hearts” (228.69 million hours) on the all-time list, and bump “The Irishman,” which peaked at 214.57 million hours viewed after its first 28 days on the streamer, from the list.

Fake Profile, the latest telenovela-style Columbian Netflix series, is out, and there are plenty of characters with less than pure intentions. The lead antagonist, however, is Pedro, the patriarch of the multimillionaire business group. Pedro Ferrer was the father of Angela and Adrian and comes across as a man who, on the surface, is loving, but behind the scenes, he is the rule-maker and the rule-breaker.
Pedro is under the impression that he could get away with any crime, and because of his connections and powers, nobody would dare to question him. The man is a misogynist who was initially ready to replace his daughter Angela, the heir to his business empire, with her husband Miguel. Pedro probably wanted his son to take over his business, but the only thing Adrian cared about was starting a restaurant. Though Pedro seemed tolerant of the fact that Adrian is gay, it seemed...

With the advent of social media and various video format platforms such as YouTube, we have been made privy to something called “telenovelas.” These are Latin television soap operas where the stories are based on over-the-top dramas and theatrics coupled with bad actors hamming their way to glory. The new Columbian Netflix original, Fake Profile, trudges into that territory, and takes no pain to steer clear of it. Directed by Catalina Hernández and Klych López and written by Pablo Illanes, this television show has so much going on that it gets weirdly comical. You must know why this television show is in no mood to slow down.
Fake Profile stars Carolina Miranda and Rodolfo Salas as Camilla and Dr. Fernando Castello, who met on a dating app in Vegas and hit it off since the day they matched. There is a full-blown romance brewing between the two, and within four months of dating,...
