Global production, sales and distribution outfit Filmsharks has picked up international sales rights to the Spanish dramedy “Samana Sunrise,” starring box office mega-draw Luis Tosar.
FilmSharks wooed exhibitors at last week’s Iberseries & Platino Industria in Madrid and will now take it to RioMarket, the AFM and Film Baazar. Universal Pictures will release the film in Spain on Nov. 8, with Movistar Plus+ taking second window pay TV and SVOD rights.
Directed by Rafa Cortés (“Yo”) and based on a play by Jordi Galcerán, the comedy stars Spanish actors Tosar, Luisa Mayol, Luis Zahera and Bárbara Santa-Cruz alongside international performers including Charles Dance and Alfredo Castro.
In the film, two couples head off on a Caribbean vacation to celebrate their parallel 20-year anniversaries. As the friends reconnect over perhaps too many drinks, old truths come out that their pairings were almost very different on the night the four of them first met.

The filmmaking trio collectively known as Rkss (François Simard, Anouk Whissell, and Yoann-Karl Whissell) tend to toggle between two distinct tones of horror: infectious, gory horror comedies and mean horror that packs a punch. With two features screening at Fantastic Fest, We Are Zombies showcased the directors’ playful side. At the opposite end of the spectrum lies Wake Up, Rkss’s delightfully mean-spirited slasher.

Sony Pictures International Productions and Amazon Prime Video recently joined forces with Álex de la Iglesia on the feature film series “The Fear Collection.” It kicked off with Álex de la Iglesia‘s Veneciafrenia, and next up is Venus, hailing from Jaume Balagueró ([Rec], [Rec 2], Sleep Tight).
The second film in the anthology film series is described as a supernatural horror story that’s set in an urban survival environment with elements of modern witchery.
Venus is inspired by Hp Lovecraft’s “Dreams in the Witch House” and stars Ester Expósito, Ángela Cremonte, Magüi Mira, Fernando Valdivieso and Federico Aguado.
We’ve learned today that Venus has been rated “R” for…
“Strong bloody violence, language, and some drug use.”
You can watch the international trailer below.
Meagan wrote in her TIFF review for Bd, “Venus makes for a slick and breezy action-horror movie far more memorable for its gruesome high-octane thrills than its cosmic chills.

Don't you hate it when you're trying to pull off the perfect crime under the noses of a local drug lord and you end up having to confront supernatural forces bent on subjugating the earth instead, all the while trying to protect a niece that you hardly know because your sister has disappeared? Yeah, me too. Spanish filmmaker Jaume Balagueró has entertained and horrified us in many ways - from his zombie franchise [Rec] (with co-director Paco Plaza), to the haunted house in Darkness, to the psychological thriller in Sleep Tight. In his latest feature, he seamlessly combines two apparently disparate genres into a whole that is quite a wild and bloody ride. Venus starts with a bang and rarely lets us and takes its...

Spanish director Jauma Balagueró might not be quite as well-known as other directors of his country, at least outside of it, but he's a cornerstone of the horror renaissance that swept the country in recent decades. From the [Rec] series to Sleep Tight, he's left an indelible mark. So it's only fitting that his latest feature, Venus, should open Sitges 2022. The only plot description we have thus far is 'Horror invades the concrete corridors of a cursed apartment complex on the outskirts of Madrid.' All you have to do is put Balagueró's name on a film and I'll go, but this is extra incentive. For those attending TIFF or Fantastic Fest, you'll have a chance to see it there. More details in the press...

Put on a seatbelt, Holly! On Friday, Holly Humberstone released the music video for her sweet yet melancholic single “Sleep Tight” and it follows her as she rides a messy minivan through a sleepy neighborhood.
“I wrote the song during the first summer out of lockdown, which was a pretty crazy time for my friends and me. We finally had our freedom back and it kind of felt like we had nothing to lose after such a difficult few months,” Humberstone tells Rolling Stone, as she premieres the song’s video.

Spanish distributors, who have enjoyed a strong track record selling remake rights to local pics, have received a major boost this year with the Malaga Festival Industry Zone’s (Mafiz) inaugural Remake Day event on Thursday.
Leading film sales companies, among them Cinema Republic, Latido Films, Filmax and Feel Content, presented showcases of films considered particularly adaptable to foreign markets. Not surprisingly, comedies and genre pics made up most of the selections.
David Castellanos’ Cinema Republic offered one strong example with Borja Cobeaga’s hit 2009 romantic comedy “Pagafantas,” which has over the years sold to Germany, Italy and Mexico.
Cinema Republic also touted Icíar Bollaín’s “Rosa’s Wedding” (“La Boda de Rosa”), about a woman in her mid-40s who decides to finally take charge of her life and fulfill her dream of starting a business.

Crime comedy film “Be Somebody” expanded its box office take by 20% in its second weekend of release in China and joined in a 49% surge in nationwide gross revenues.
Nationwide box office climbed from $43.1 million in the previous weekend to $64.3 million between Friday and Sunday. For all that, China’s year to date box office haul is now 26% below that of pre-covid 2019.
Staying on top of the chart for a second session, “Be Somebody” earned $23.9 million over the weekend, according to data from Artisan Gateway. That gives it a 10-day total of $60.3 million.
The movie directed by Liu Xunzi Mo is a send-up of crime drama tropes, making fun of the genre through the story of a group of filmmakers trying to please a wealthy patron by creating a sufficiently blood-thirsty crime thriller when things begin to go awry in the mansion where they are cloistered to work on the project.

Creepy isn’t the same as scary.
Of course horror movies can be scary simply by using loud noises and sudden movements to make their audiences jump, but creepy is harder to pull off. To be effectively creepy, a film needs to establish a certain atmosphere; it needs to draw you in and make you care. It needs to give you something to think about when you’re trying to drop off to sleep at night; to make you wonder whether that creaking noise down the hallway was just the house settling or something lurking in the shadows. Creepy stays with you. It gives you goosebumps.
Here are 85 of the best horror movies (in no particular order) to chill your bones. Enjoy the nightmares.

Madrid — One of Europe’s best-known genre auteurs, Jaume Balagueró is teaming with fellow Spaniard Pau Freixas, writer-director of “The Red Band Society,” and creator of Mediaset España’s “I Know Who You Are,” on a small-screen version of “Los sin nombre” (“The Nameless”).
Created by Balagueró and Freixas and currently in development, the series is set up at Arca Audiovisual, Filmax’ TV division.
Based on a novel by British horror scribe Ramsey Campbell, “The Nameless” was Balagueró’s 1999 feature debut and established him as a leading light of Spain’s auteur genre movement.
In its turn, “Nameless’” established production house Filmax, headed by Julio and Carlos Fernández, as a prime mover of horror movies in Spain for much of the next decade.
Film went on to launch the Fantastic Factory with Brian Yuzna and to produce Balagueró’s “Darkness” (2002), which grossed $22.2 million in the U.S., Calista Flockhart-starrer “Fragile” (2003) and above all,...

Beta Film has added two more high-profile Spanish scripted series from Movistar Plus to its lineup ahead of Mipcom. The Germany-based content outfit has a history of selling Spanish drama globally, and has snagged the rights to action-thriller “La Unidad” and drama series “Tell Me Who I Am.”
The scripted series will be highlights of the Movistar Plus 2020 lineup as the pay-tv and streaming outfit goes deeper into original drama. Beta and Movistar Plus have a co-production and distribution deal in place, with recent successes including Alex Pina’s “The Pier,” Leticia Dolera‘s “Perfect Life” and Paco Leon’s “Arde Madrid.”

From unseen forces to dangerous desires, from the remorseful living to the remorseless dead, from under the earth to creepy closed doors, Arrow Video FrightFest 2019 continues the festival’s fine tradition of showcasing the best in global genre short filmmaking. Back in 2012 I was blown away by Jaume Balagueró’s Sleep Tight, which screened as part of that years Frightfest; and now comes Door Lock, a Korean remake of Balagueró’s film. Although this is a remake in the loosest of terms. For instead of retelling the same story, which Sleep Tight told from the perspective of its protagonist’, Door Lock tells its story from the victim’s point of view… And this victim has issues of her own!
Kyung-min lives a quiet life, seemingly content with the routine her job provides and the safety of her busy apartment complex, until one day, when she begins to suspect that someone tried to break into her home. Given the mounting evidence and an imminent threat to her life, Kyung-min repeatedly seeks help only to be rebuffed at every turn.

Have you ever had a fear of somebody entering your home when you are not there or when you are asleep, without you realising they were ever there? If so, director Lee Kwon is here to bring your fear to thrilling life with his latest film “Door Lock”. It is one of two films playing at Fantasia International Film Festival 2019 that stars actress Gong Hyo-jin, the other being “Hit-and-Run-Squad”.
“Door Lock” is screening at Fantasia International Film Festival
“Door Lock” is a film that is very hard to talk about without giving away spoilers, but I will attempt to do so anyway: Kyeong-min is a non-regular bank employee who has a nagging feeling that someone is messing about with the electronic door lock on her studio apartment, the kind that are very common all over Korea. Her suspicions soon get confirmed when she coincidentally sees someone trying to open her door while she is inside.

British broadcaster Channel 4 is to launch AwesomenessTV’s supernatural thriller Light As a Feather on its digital service.
The network will launch the ten-part series, which was originally available via Hulu, on All4 on April 1. This comes days after Viacom closed a deal to sell a raft of Awesomeness content globally after the U.S. media giant acquired the youth-skewing brand last year.
Light as a Feather centers on four best friends who invite the shy new girl out on Halloween, but they soon regret their decision when she suggests they play a seemingly innocent game of ‘Light as a Feather, Stiff as a Board’. The game goes awry when the five girls start dying off in the exact way that was predicted, forcing the survivors to figure out why they’ve been targeted – and whether the evil force hunting them down is one of their own.

A slow year for Korean thrillers gets a late shot in the arm with Doorlock, director Lee Kwon's tense remake of Jaume Balagueró's Spanish film Sleep Tight. The first game out of the gate for indie devs We Are Fuzzy, Sleep Tight is an inviting idea, one which is immediately engaging – although its unbridled childish joy, infectious as it is, comes with serious caveats.
As soon as you boot up the game, you know you’re in safe hands in terms of the presentation. Wonderfully twee music overlays a bright, fat-fonted menu, and within a few button presses you’re into the game. Simple controls make it feel just right in the hands: one stick to move, one to aim; fire with one trigger, switch weapons with the other. Boom, you’re rocking.
The setting is the (remarkably spacious) living room of a family home. You start off as a kid: brave guardian of the lounge rug. It’s your job to defend the space from a series of monster attacks. Cute and blue they may be,...

In an astonishing move to swell the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences membership ranks, a record 928 artists and executives from 59 countries have been invited to join this year. The branches have increasingly actively sought eligible people to invite to join the Academy, but the Board of Governors makes the final call; this year, they did not invite Kobe Bryant to join although he won an Oscar for animated short “Dear Basketball.”
Clearly, people of color (38 percent) and women (49 percent) are among the many invites, as the Academy continues to address its long-term white-male dominance. As always, actors make up the largest branch of the Academy, but many new members also come from overseas.
In 2017, the Academy invited 744 new members.

Jaume Balagueró is turning to an English-language Muse. That's the title of the next supernatural thriller from the director of the exquisitely good Sleep Tight (Mientras duermes) and the recently-arrived [Rec] 4: Apocalypse. There you are, tucked away sound and snuggly in your little bed. Counting sheep and drifting off to dreamland. The next thing you know, a stranger is in your house with nothing but bad intentions. To celebrate the release of Mischief Night, we bring you the Top 11 Home Invasions in Horror.
We could go on forever with the list of honorable mentions in this category. Films like The Desperate Hours, Kidnapped and High Tension (Haute Tension) come immediately to mind. As do Panic Room, You're Next, The Purge, The Aggression Scale and Funny Games. Hell, even Macaulay Culkin got terrorized by Daniel Stern and Joe Pesci in Home Alone. Some on the list are traditional assaults and some are more unique, but we think we've got it narrowed down to...

★★★★☆ From the man who co-directed the first two entries in the [Rec] horror franchise, Spanish filmmaker Jaume Balagueró now tries his hand at something a little less frightening - yet equally as disturbing - as we enter the deranged world of César (Luis Tosar) in Sleep Tight (Mientras duermes, 2011). Working as an apartment block concierge, César takes full advantage of his position, sneaking into the flat of beautiful tenant Clara (Marta Etura) almost nightly - with the unsuspecting victim having absolutely no idea. We begin with the image of César contemplating suicide, professing his deep unhappiness in what is a fruitless livelihood.
