Note: The following story contains spoilers from “What We Do in the Shadows” Season 6, Episode 9.
From its first season, “What We Do in the Shadows” has been a show unafraid to cheekily drop big names, especially if the actors in question have a vampire on their IMDb page. And in its final season, the FX comedy embraced its chaotic, star-studded side once more.
“Come Out and Play” once again finds the Staten Island crew among the many, many, many throngs of vampires that inhabit New York, from the Meatpacking hotties to the aspiring artist vampires who have to hold down day jobs as baristas. But there’s one especially tall, pale and questioning vamp that may have caught viewers’ eyes. Here’s your guide to the “True Blood” star who’s casually in this latest season.

A month after NBC broadcast live Steph Curry’s heroics during the Men’s Basketball Olympics final that helped USA clinch the title, the Golden State Warriors star will be back on the network. NBC will air the first episode of the Peacock original comedy series Mr. Throwback, starring Curry and Adam Pally, on Sept. 12. The pilot will run in the anchor Thursday 9 Pm slot from the network’s “Must See TV” era.
The move is designed to give additional exposure to Mr. Throwback, which premiered Aug. 8 on Peacock alongside the streamer’s Olympics coverage that included Curry & Co.’s quest for Olympic gold.
The half-hour, co-created/executive produced by David Caspe, ranks as a top 5 Peacock original comedy series launch based on its opening weekend viewing out of 19 comedy shows the NBCU streamer has introduced so far. Not surprisingly, 77% of the accounts who watched Mr. Throwback also watched basketball at the Olympics.

When TV academy voters sit down to fill out their 2024 Emmy nominations ballots, they have to consider 73 shows for Best Comedy Series; this is down by 22 contenders from last year. As was the case last year, each member’s selections may not exceed the number of eventual nominations in a given category, which will be eight in this case.
On its quest for a second consecutive victory here, “The Bear” will have to fend off just two of its seven 2023 rivals: “Abbott Elementary” and “Only Murders in the Building.” Last year’s remaining contenders that did not air episodes during the June 1, 2023 to May 31, 2024 eligibility period are “Barry,” “Jury Duty,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “Ted Lasso,” and “Wednesday,” the last of which is the only one known to have a new season in the works.

Paramount is really trying to make “Fetch” happen, this time with a younger generation.
On October 3, forever enshrined as “Mean Girls” Day in memory of the first time hottie Aaron Samuels asked Cady Heron (Lindsay Lohan) what day it was in the 2004 teen comedy, Paramount put the entirety of “Mean Girls” on TikTok, viewable for free in 23 chunks.
It’s the first time a movie, new or classic, has been released in full by a major movie studio on TikTok, though Peacock earlier this year released the full pilot episode of the Craig Robinson series “Killing It” as an appetizer to bring in audiences to the streaming show. Other distributors have experimented with such models on other platforms, like the Fortnite premiere of “Tenet” or when Oscilloscope posted a movie in 6-second segments on Vine.

The entertainment industry is in a weird spot right now. Streamers and studios keep purging exclusive material that hasn't made the jump to physical media, seemingly intentionally creating a new library of lost media in favor of tax write-downs. The AMPTP has forced a dual strike between the WGA and SAG-AFTRA, effectively shutting down the industry and already making a huge dent in box office performances. Streamers and studios are definitely feeling the hurt and looking to make money in whatever way they can, which includes smacking users on social media with Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) takedowns, an attempt to prevent anyone from unofficially using copyrighted material that doesn't belong to them. The fear is not just that people could be leaking footage ahead of release, but that providing the clips for free online will hurt the studio's bottom line or allow a non-involved person to profit off of sharing the shows,...

Warning: This notebook contains spoilers for the second season of Peacock’s Killing It.
The driving idea behind Peacock’s Killing It might be most tidily encapsulated in an argument between its two leads in the season two finale. Having screwed an associate out of his share of their saw palmetto berry farm, Craig (Craig Robinson) defends the tactic as “very basic dog-eat-dog stuff.” His best friend and co-owner, however, rejects the cliché. “But like, dogs shouldn’t eat dogs, right?” Jillian (Claudia O’Doherty) demands. “No. When a dog eats another dog, people freak out.”
By Killing It’s estimation, they’re both right. Dan Goor and Luke Tredici are scathing in their criticism of the modern American rat race, which, to Craig’s point, does tend to reward those most willing to manipulate, cheat and harm others. But its heart ultimately lies with Jillian. This situation is worth freaking out about.

Though less obvious about it than some other streaming services, Peacock has been churning out some of the best TV of the year. On the heels of Emmy-nominated series “Poker Face” and “Mrs. Davis” comes the return of Craig Robinson’s comedy “Killing It.” The show stars Robinson and Claudia O’Doherty as Craig and Jillian, two underdogs who team up to kill snakes to win prize money, a real thing that happens in Florida as a means of protecting the ecosystem from invasive pythons.
In Season 2, which is now streaming, the pair’s talent for killing snakes leads to the realization of Craig’s dream: owning a saw palmetto farm, which he hopes will give him the means to become a mogul. The comedy, which hails from “Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s” Dan Goor and Luke Del Tredici, is as endearing as it is biting as it takes on issues of class...

Peacock's Killing It burst onto screens last year and landed strong reviews.
The second season, premiering Thursday, August 17, 2023, heightens the stakes and the comedy as Craig and Jillian take the money they won from the Florida Python Challenge and buy a saw palmetto berry farm.
TV Fanatic got the chance to speak with Craig Robinson, Rell Battle, and Claudia O'Doherty about what's in store for the sophomore season. These interviews were conducted prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike.
Robinson opened up about where we pick up with Craig. He's closer than ever to achieving his dreams after winning the money.
The actor says Craig "couldn't be happier" when Killing It Season 2 begins, but he warns that it "all comes crashing down."
"He's about to get paid, and then, it's a dream deferred, if you will," he explained, adding that Craig's relationships with all the characters will come to the forefront this season.

In these dark times in which we live, the line between satire and horror can be so razor-thin as to barely exist at all. Peacock’s Craig Robinson comedy Killing It is ostensibly a comedy about how badly the American economic system is stacked against anyone who isn’t already well-off. But its humor is so cutting, and so often feels not that far removed from reality, that I often spend more time covering my face during episodes than laughing.
This is not a complaint, mind you. The series, created...

The python killing game may have been the feature focus of Peacock‘s Killing It, but the actual creatures of mystery are the humans.
The heartfelt comedy combines the sweetness and out-of-the-box comedy of a series like Detroiters or The Office with the spicy edge of Breaking Bad.
Actors Craig Robinson and Rell Battle, who play Craig and Isaiah Foster, found that the roles of down-on-their-luck brothers with deep trauma can be both hilarious and emotional. Every character owns a breakout moment that leaves viewers cackling one minute and sobbing the next.
Battle had an extremely emotional Emmy-worthy moment alongside Robinson during Killing It Season 1 where Isaiah finally addressed childhood trauma.
“I call him Denzrell,” Robinson joked with Showbiz Cheat Sheet about Battle’s performance.

Jillian G. on Peacock‘s Killing It is an absolute bada**.
The sweet Aussie turned python hunter adds new skills to her mysterious background – ninja fighter. Actor Claudia O’Doherty, who embodies Jillian in the sweetly hilarious series, is doing her own stunts this season and loving every minute of it.
The onion layer peeled back on Killing It Season 2 is that no one should mess with Jillian G. and that she has some shocking self-defense moves, stunts that O’Doherty performed herself this season.
“I did do my own stunts, which I’m shocked to say,” O’Doherty told Showbiz Cheat Sheet. “Well, no, look, I did a lot of my own stunts. I had a great stunt woman as well who did the really hard stuff that I absolutely could not do. But I was shocked by the amount that I did do.

To promote the Aug. 17 return of Peacock’s Killing It, NBCUniversal is turning to other alternatives as star Craig Robinson remains barred from doing so amid the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike.
NBCUniversal announced Monday that the first three episodes of season one of the comedy from the duo behind Brooklyn Nine-Nine are now available to watch for free on YouTube and TikTok. The first two episodes of the series will also air Monday on USA Network, following the top-rated WWE Monday Night Raw.

For stand-up comics gathered at the Just For Laughs comedy festival in Montreal this week, booking club dates across North America and arena dates worldwide represents far more than a way to stay busy and pay the rent during the Hollywood writers and actors strikes.
It’s what live comedy artists do year-round, taking to the road or TikTok and YouTube to hone their craft and build fan followings with an eye to global stand-up touring as the pinnacle of their profession. The result is a strike-proof Just For Laughs festival barely impacted by the current Hollywood industry shutdown as SAG-AFTRA and the Writers Guild of America look to settle contract talks with the AMPTP, representing major studios and streamers.
“We know the heart of what we do is stand-up and comedy and that is not affected by the strikes,” Robyn Kaszor, vp of festivals at Just For Laughs, told The Hollywood Reporter on Thursday.

Universal Pictures has changed its release plans for its as-yet-untitled buddy comedy from comedians Ben Marshall, John Higgins and Martin Herlihy — the SNL writing trio collectively known as Please Don’t Destroy. While the film was previously set to hit theaters on August 18th, it will now debut exclusively on Peacock on November 17th.
Produced by Judd Apatow for Apatow Productions and Jimmy Miller for Mosaic, the film centers on three childhood friends who live and work together, and question where their lives are headed — if anywhere at all. Completely ill-equipped and out of their element, they set off to find a lost treasure rumored to be buried in their local mountains. They subsequently discover that finding the treasure is actually the easiest part of the adventure.
Shot last summer during SNL‘s off-season with the late-night series’ Paul Briganti at the helm, the comedy is penned by Marshall, Higgins and Herlihy,...

Concern about looming labor unrest and uncertainty surrounding pending corporate restructuring have contributed to a 35.8% plunge in on-location TV production in Los Angeles in the first quarter of 2023 compared with the same period last year, according to the latest report from FilmLA, the city and county film permit office.
“Over three consecutive quarters, we’ve seen a significant slowdown across all of the most economically important categories of on-location production,” said FilmLA President Paul Audley. “Particularly in the television world, decisions about future content direction are on hold, pending the outcome of corporate restructuring actions and industry labor negotiations.”
Overall, local on-location shoot days fell by 24% in the first quarter this year compared to the first quarter last year – down from 9,832 to 7,476 shoot days – and 16.8% below the region’s five-year average of first quarters. FilmLA defines a “shoot day” as one crew’s permission to film at one or more defined locations during all or part of any given 24-hour period. FilmLA data does not include production that occurs on certified sound stages or in jurisdictions it doesn’t serve.

Asked about L.A.’s overall decline in on-location TV production, Audley told Deadline that “We have a multitude of things impacting it, and we’re not really clear which one is having the greatest impact. But certainly the news that’s been around for months now about the majors and the streaming services beginning to reduce the amount of production has had an impact. In the first quarter of 2022, we still had sort of a halo from Covid, with people not being able to travel and a lot more production in L.A. And we have seen some concerns about starting production on series, with a potential strike. So, there are all kinds of things in the balance. But it is part of a longer-term trend – the downturn in production for greater Los Angeles.”
The Writers Guild this week received overwhelming approval from its members to launch a strike if negotiations for a new contract with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers can’t be reached by May 1. And the DGA is set to begin its own contract talks with the AMPTP on May 10, followed by SAG-AFTRA on June 7.

“We would hope that when all the various unions and guilds that are in, or going into, labor negotiations settle out, that we would see some level of a return to production to whatever our new normal is,” Audley said.
“But we have to also realize that the international and national competition remains extreme for California,” he added. “One of our major competitors, New York, is going from $420 million in tax incentives to $700 million this year, while California remains, if the governor’s budget is passed, at $330 million. We’re behind on infrastructure development of new stages, as other major areas are building massive and multiple new stages, and we’re sort of at the beginning of doing that. So, the answer is to meet the completion and beat it in the mid-term – not long-term – because if we wait too long, we’re out of the game.
“The other part of the answer is that we’ve seen, in this report and in past reports, how critical the tax credit has been in at least maintaining some level of production here. When you look at television, and realize that almost a quarter of our TV has been associated with that tax credit in this last quarter, imagine the numbers if we didn’t have that tax credit in place. It would be basically bottom-barrel for us, and we’d be in more serious trouble than we are in now.”
California’s tax credit was increased by $90 million – to $420 million – this year and last year, but will return to $330 million next year – or less than half of what New York is offering, and far below the $900 million allotted by Georgia.

The one bright spot in FilmLA’s latest report is that that on-location production of TV comedies increased by 25.1% – to 324 shoot days – from last year’s first quarter but are still down by 22.1% from the five-year average of first quarters. Only 12 of those shoot days, however, involved productions that received California tax credits – or just 3.7% of the total comedy shoot-days. TV sitcoms that filmed locally last quarter included American Auto (NBC), Young Sheldon (CBS), Curb Your Enthusiasm (HBO), It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia (FX), Killing it (Peacock), and This Fool (Hulu).
On-location production of TV dramas, meanwhile, plunged 40.4% to 762 shoot days in the first quarter of 2023 compared to the first quarter of 2022, and fell by 37.3% compared to the five-year average of first quarters, although FilmLA don’t include 2020 in its five-year averages because production was suspended in Los Angeles County between mid-March through mid-June dues to the Covid-19 pandemic.
TV dramas that shot in the region last quarter included The Company You Keep (ABC), All American (The CW), Mayans Mc (FX), The Sympathizer (HBO), Presumed Innocent (Apple TV+) and Interior Chinatown (Hulu). A total of 186 of the 762 TV drama shoot days – 24.4% – were from projects that received California tax credits.
Reality TV shows, which aren’t eligible for the state’s tax credits, plummeted 37.8% in the first quarter, although production levels in this category hover 17.4% above the five-year average.

TV Pilots, produced far less often in an age of direct-to-series orders, generated just seven shoot days for the quarter – a whopping 88.3% decline from the previous year, and 95.4% below the five-year average. Part of this decline in pilots, however, can be attributed to bookkeeping. FilmLA relies on companies to self-classify their project type when they apply for permits, and while for a time applicants tended to call their first episode a pilot, even for a direct-to-series show, now they often just call their show a TV Drama or TV Sitcom.
On-location production of feature films, meanwhile, remained flat for the quarter – 595 shoot days in 2023 versus 594 shoot days in 2022 – but was down 13.1% over the five-year average.
A total of 99 feature film shoot days – 16.6% of feature production – were tied to films that received the state’s tax incentives. Local productions included Unicorn (Apple Studios), Fast X (Universal Pictures), Black Girl, Erupted (BET Her), and indie films On Swift Horses, Stealing Pulp Fiction, and Wishing Well.
Commercial productions, which aren’t eligible for the state’s tax credits, continued their decline last quarter, with a 22.5% percent drop compared to last year (to 899 shoot days), and an even steeper 32.5% decline compared to its five-year average. Companies such as Ally Bank, Chevron and Walmart recently filmed spots locally, as did car companies such as BMW, Dodge, Ford, Genesis, Honda, Hyundai, Toyota and Volvo.
FilmLA’s “other” category, which included still photography shoots, student films, music videos and all other miscellaneous production categories, was down by 13.7% compared to last year.
