Alicia Vikander will lead Rachel Rose’s debut film “The Last Day” alongside Victoria Pedretti and Wagner Moura.
The film, which wrapped production in New York in October, follows a writer and mother who confronts her lack of creative purpose and embarks on a journey of rediscovering herself after encountering figures from her past.
“The Last Day” is produced by Lucie Elwes, Rose, Mason Plotts, Pamela Koffler and Christine Vachon of Killer Films — the production company behind last year’s “Past Lives” and “May December” — as well as David Kaplan of Kaplan Morrison (“The Brutalist”). Filmmakers and distributors of awards-hopefuls have until Nov. 4 to submit their category preference — drama versus musical or comedy — to the Golden Globes organization, which reserves the right to overturn any classification that it finds egregiously inaccurate.
Some of this year’s cases are inarguable — for instance, Netflix’s Emilia Pérez, in which characters spontaneously burst into song, is clearly a musical (if not a comedy), and A24’s The Brutalist, in which an immigrant faces all sorts of harrowing hurdles, is clearly a drama. There are, however, also plenty of close-calls, about which many have made assumptions, but, in most cases, not confirmed.
The Hollywood Reporter has been working the phones and can now report which way almost every contender is breaking. This intel is, of course, subject to change prior to Nov. 4, and to being overturned by the Globes thereafter — but it is current as of this writing.

At the most recent Oscars, Emma Stone became the lucky 13th winner of two Best Actress awards when she picked up the prize for “Poor Things”; she had prevailed seven years earlier for “La La Land.” Stone is back in the race this year with “Kinds of Kindness,” which reunites her with “Poor Things” director Yorgos Lanthimos. However that trippy trilogy is unlikely to bring them back to the Oscars. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Actress.)
Leading the race are the leads from two of the hottest Best Picture contenders: Mikey Madison, the scene-stealing breakout star of Sean Baker‘s serio-comic “Anora” and Karla Sofia Gascon, the stand-out in the ensemble of Jacques Audiard’s genre-blending “Emilia Perez.”

A quarter century after winning the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for “Girl, Interrupted,” Angelina Jolie is hoping to pick up the Best Actress trophy for her performance in “Maria.” In terms of Oscar history, she’d join Meryl Streep, Jessica Lange, Cate Blanchett, and Renée Zellweger, who all won for featured performances before prevailing again for star turns.
Jolie’s role, that of real-life opera singer Maria Callas, has already been proven to be awards-worthy and won Jane Seymour an Emmy nearly four decades ago. This English rose featured in the 1988 TV movie “Onassis: The Richest Man in the World,” opposite Raul Julia as Aristotle Onassis and Anthony Quinn as his father, Socrates. This remains her only Emmy win from five nominations.
Zellweger won Best Actress for her sensitive portrayal of Judy Garland in the 2020 flick “Judy.” Back in 2001, Tammy Blanchard and Judy Davis took home Emmys for their work...

It was a Happy Days 50th anniversary reunion tonight at the Emmys, with former stars Ron Howard and Henry Winkler presenting the Emmy for Best Directing for a Comedy Series.
Howard and Winkler appeared on a re-creation of the iconic Arnold’s Drive-In set, when Howard (aka Richie Cunningham), noted that their intro did not include music, specifically the “Happy Days” theme song. “Candice Bergen had a theme song,” said Howard, to which Winkler replied, “Well of course she would get one.”
“Well, I have a solution, you could do it,” said Howard, encouraging Winkler to go play the jukebox as he did on the series. “First of all, I’m out of practice, it takes schooling” joked Winkler, who then did the iconic Fonzie move and got the Happy Days theme song to play. “Well done,” said Howard.

Just in time for Judgment Day, Netflix has a new installment in the “Terminator” franchise for fans of the iconic, long-running sci-fi action franchise. This time, however, you won’t see any familiar faces — the series is animated. However, you might recognize some of the voices, so we’ve put together a handy guide to the “Terminator Zero” cast.
You won’t see Sarah Connor, Kyle Reese or Arnold’s T-800 in this story — it introduces a new timeline and all new characters to go with it. Set in 1997, Japan, “Terminator Zero” focuses on a developer named Malcolm Lee, who is hard at work on another AI system to compete with Skynet and save the human race. Naturally, a Terminator unit is sent back in time to target him and his three children, while a soldier from the future is sent back with a mission of her own.

Actor Terrence Howard was last seen in the biopic Shirley as Arthur Hardwick Jr. The actor has worked on quite a few projects despite announcing his retirement plans back in 2022. However, while the Iron Man star gears up to hang his coat, he has also reportedly been working on himself and has undergone a boy transformation.
In his appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience, Howard spoke about changing his diet and detoxing from the ‘parasites’ in his body. He credited his wife, Miranda Pak, to have encouraged him to work on himself and change his habits. It’s been half a decade since the directorial debut of Hannah Marks, yet each film she’s made has boasted the same vitality and youthful fervor of a new voice on the scene. Her first adaptation and most ambitious project yet, Turtles All the Way Down, benefits from her ability to tap into the zeitgeist of today’s youth, allowing it to rise above its conventions.
Adapted from John Green’s acclaimed young adult novel of the same name, Turtles All the Way Down follows a teen girl with big dreams and aspirations as she investigates the mystery of a fugitive billionaire. The film is far less interested in the central mystery than the protagonist’s internal journey, simply using this as a device to propel her self-discovery.

After 20 years, Participant is shutting down.
Founder Jeff Skoll announced the news in a note to staff Tuesday, writing, “after much reflection, I have made the very difficult decision to wind down company operations.” During its run, the company was behind best picture winners Green Book and Moonlight, and docs such as An Inconvenient Truth and Rbg.
EBay co-founder Skoll founded the company in 2004 with a dual mission of making money and inspiring social change through entertainment (the company later moved into television and other ventures). It has helped produce and finance a slew of high-profile awards contenders. Its films won 21 Oscars and its series won 18 Emmys. It earned more than $3.3 billion at the box office. Veteran studio executive David Linde has been running Participant since 2016; previous execs involved in Participant include Ricky Strauss.
It was heavily involved in the nonfiction space, with its shuttering sure to send ripples through that community.

Financier and producer Participant is shuttering after 20 years. Founder Jeff Skoll alerted staff at 10:30Am, Deadline has confirmed.
The production’s m.o. was to bring content to the world that was socially conscious, read their Oscar Best Picture winners Spotlight and Universal’s Green Book, as well as DreamWorks’ Oscar winner Lincoln. All in Participant counts 135 films, five series, 21 Oscars including two Best Pictures, four Best Documentaries and two Best International Features, 18 Primetime Emmys and north of $3.3 billion in global box office.

As award-winning directors Amanda McBaine and Jesse Moss prepared to shoot their new documentary Girls State, they had no way of knowing real-world events would intrude upon the production in a major way. Nor, of course, did their protagonists.
Just as hundreds of young women in Missouri were assembling for an annual exercise in mock government, the draft Dobbs opinion leaked, signaling the U.S. Supreme Court’s intent to reverse Roe v. Wade. McBaine and Moss join Deadline’s Doc Talk podcast to discuss their film and how the Dobbs ruling impacted high school-age girls embarking on their campaigns for governor, state supreme court and other high offices.
The filmmaking couple calls Girls State a “sibling” – not a sequel – to their 2020 film Boys State, winner of the Emmy for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special. Missouri’s Girls State and Boys State programs took place at the same time and same location,...

Netflix is at or near the top of both Nielsen and Luminate’s streaming rankings every week, but achieved that with some titles that differ from its usual fare during the March 29-April 3 viewing window.
As expected, “3 Body Problem” remained the most-watched streaming original series of the week per Luminate with 964.1 million minutes watched (an estimated 3.6 million views) — unsurprising, as the title is the follow-up from “Game of Thrones” helmers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, who created the show alongside Alexander Woo.
But right behind it was “Testament: The Story of Moses,” a biblical series that Netflix calls a “docudrama” that landed on the streamer in time for Easter weekend. Though the project differs from the content typically prioritized by Netflix (and most streamers) it reached a strong 707.8 million minutes watched. Divided by the series’ just over 4-hour runtime, that translates to an estimated 2.8 million views.

Update, 12:25 Pm: A day after John Ridley, ABC and the Walt Disney Company sued for discrimination and retaliation by a former employee, the Oscar winner is rejecting the claims.
“The allegations against Mr. Ridley are false, and the allegation that Mr. Ridley is biased against Asian-Americans is preposterous,” says attorney Jennifer Redmond of the April 3 jury seeking filing by Asta Jonasson. “We look forward to proving as much in court,” the Sheppard Mullin partner added.
Disney declined comment on the matter.

Jeffrey Epstein is back in the news with the release of the sex trafficker’s private files earlier this year, so it’s good timing that Netflix is releasing its thriller on the exposé. Unfortunately, the would-be prestige drama Scoop feels like all bark and no bite, lacking the insight or audacity to make it a meaningful entry to the genre.
Scoop tells the story of the BBC journalists who obtained the Newsnight interview with Prince Andrew about his relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Although this story is undeniably interesting, the film’s fundamental flaw is treating it as a nail-biting thriller when the situation’s results are so well-known. Had the movie taken a more satirical, perhaps even farcical, approach, it would have been far more compelling.
The film also struggles to straddle the line between technical and accessible. At some points, it seems like the filmmakers...

What the movie-streaming public wants depends on which top 10 chart you prefer. This week offered little consistency and some outright contradictions.
One thing is clear: Jake Gyllenhaal’s straight-to-streaming “Road House” remake is a massive hit. Amazon Prime reported over 50 million worldwide viewers through its second streaming weekend and gateway app Reelgood reported it as the week’s #1 movie for March 21-27 in the U.S.
“The Accountant,” a 2016 Warner Bros. drama starring Ben Affleck, is currently #1 at Netflix. On Easter weekend “The Passion of the Christ” led VOD at iTunes, while the just-released $19.99 “Imaginary” (Lionsgate) topped Fandango’s revenue-calculated list. (It was #20 at iTunes.) For a second week, Google Play did not update its list.
“Ordinary Angels” (also Lionsgate) is #2 at Fandango, but #14 at iTunes. Since Fandango calculates by revenue, that list favors PVODs — but this week, six of its top 10 rented for $5.99 or less; “The Passion of the Christ,...

“Road House” was the most-watched streaming original title for the week of March 22-28, per Luminate. Based on the 1989 Patrick Swayze flick of the same, the Amazon Prime Video project was watched for 1.7 billion minutes during this viewing window.
The week before, “Road House” debuted at No. 5 on the movies chart with 121.5 million minutes watched, despite only having been available for one day. Evidently, the Jake Gyllenhaal remake picked up steam throughout its first week of availability, with an increased daily average of nearly 250 million minutes watched.
Divided by its 121-minute runtime, this week’s 1.7 billion viewing minutes of “Road House” translate to an estimated 13.9 million total views.
“Shirley,” the Netflix biopic about the pioneering politician Shirley Chisholm, debuted as the No. 2 movie with 298.7 million minutes watched. In total views, however, it was still beat by last week’s winning movie: “Irish Wish,” which clocked in at No. 3 from March...

Two new biopics about 20th-century Black icons entered the home viewing charts this week: “Bob Marley: One Love” (Paramount), the film about the legendary reggae artist nearing $100 million in theaters, and “Shirley” (Netflix), about the first Black Congresswoman and one-time presidential candidate, led newcomers in a week that mostly repeated top titles.
“One Love” is #1 at Fandango, which ranks by revenue. The VOD platform won’t be able to provide its whole top 10 until Monday, but the company confirms that placement. Somewhat surprisingly, “One Love” is #3 at iTunes, behind “Anyone but You” (Sony) and “The Beekeeper” (Lionsgate), now both at $5.99 to rent after earlier strong PVOD performances at $19.99.
Both Fandango and Google Play chart by transactions. But normally a film with the success in theaters that “Bob Marley” had would debut at #1. It’s unclear, with data beyond relative rankings absent, whether this might be just because the reduced price...

Actress Regina King is no stranger to playing strong-minded and confident women on the big screen, having impressed everyone with her performance in the 2018 film If Beale Street Could Talk. Despite a plethora of strong female characters in her filmography, King had extremely positive things to say about a role she played almost 28 years ago.

Ms. King portrayed Congresswoman Chisholm as she launches an impossible dream of running for the Democratic nomination for president in 1972. Behind Ms. Chisholm was her husband Conrad (Michael Cherrie), her advisors Arthur Hardwick (Terrence Howard) and Mac Holder (Lance Reddick), as well as colleagues Congressman Walter Fauntroy (André Holland) and future politico and congresswoman, Barbara Lee (Christina Jackson). The result of her run are obviously known, but it’s the insider process that is the guts of this impossible dream.

In a busy weekend at the box office, “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” the Sydney Sweeney horror vehicle “Immaculate,” IFC’s “Late Night with the Devil,” and two animated rereleases (“Luca” and recent Oscar winner “The Boy and the Heron“) will compete for the top spots. Meanwhile, a recent box-office smash is hitting digital platforms.
The contender to watch this week: “Bob Marley: One Love“
Reinaldo Marcus Green‘s biopic about the pioneering reggae singer is still riding its theatrical wave ($170 million worldwide and counting), but “Bob Marley: One Love” is also available to purchase or rent on VOD. Kingsley Ben-Adir shed his Kenergy to play Marley, icon of dorm-room posters and pacifistic chill-out vibes, opposite a supporting cast that includes Lashana Lynch, Tosin Cole, “Happy Valley” breakout James Norton, and Michael Gandolfini. “One Love” is a fairly rote retelling enhanced by its subject’s music, but even the weakest biopic tendencies have a groovy appeal.

Jimmy Kimmel and Regina King shared a touching moment Thursday night as the actress visited Kimmel’s show for the first time since her son’s death in 2022.

Nearly five decades before Kamala Harris ran for the U.S. presidency in 2020, Shirley Chisholm was the first Black woman to run for president in 1972. She had also made history in 1968 becoming the first Black woman elected to the U.S. congress serving in the House of Representatives. The Democrat’s slogan in her first campaign was “Fighting Shirley-Unbought and Unbossed.” Serving in the House of Representatives until 1983, Chisholm introduced numerous pieces of legislation and was at the forefront of the fight for racial and gender equality and the plight of the poor. Actors are drawn to biopics like moths to a particularly bright, often gold-tinted flame because it allows them to test their impressionistic mettle, to inhabit the real life of someone who’s often larger than life, to chart how an extraordinary human being is transformed into an emblem of their moment. Audiences are drawn to biopics because we love actors, or at the very least we like seeing them trying to fill the shoes of these renowned figures and find the person beneath the symbolic purpose, shouted slogans, and prosthetic schnozzes.

Shirley is a biographical movie about the life of Shirley Chisholm movie written and directed by John Ridley starring Regina King.
A schoolteacher, elected to Congress. It was the early 70s, and Shirley Chisholm was also the first African American woman to run for the Presidency of the United States. A woman who ran without any backing, representing the members of the working class, the minorities.
A movie filled with hope, faith, and feminism.
Indeed, more than a racial candidacy, Shirley Chisholm based her campaign on gender politics and minorities, paving the way for a hopeful future.
A film about faith, but above all about clear-cut American politics.
About the movie
Faith, hope, and a lot of political film of good ideas, faith, hope, and political consciousness. A movie with its good ideas well defined (we don’t deny them at any moment) and does everything possible to assert its thesis.

Three years after winning an Emmy for portraying Margaret Thatcher, Gillian Anderson returns to British politics as a member of the fourth estate in “Scoop.” The Netflix film stars the actress as the “Newsnight” journalist Emily Maitlis, who sat down for a squirm-inducing interview with Prince Andrew, Duke of York, portrayed by a physically transformed Rufus Sewell. When she does score a clandestine meeting with Prince Andrew to win him over,...
