What a difference a decade makes. It’s been nearly 10 years since Brazil produced the dystopian “3%,” its first series for Netflix. Since then, the country has launched an average of two shows a month on the platform, said Elisabetta Zenatti, VP of content for Netflix in Brazil, who announced last year that the streaming giant was investing $165 million (1 billion Reales) in Brazilian productions thru 2023 and 2024.
On Nov. 29, Netflix’s most ambitious and expensive Brazilian series, “Senna,” launched worldwide. According to the Associated Press, the streamer spent over $170 million on production. Currently ranking number two in Brazil and number six globally in its first week, it’s likely to sit high in Netflix’s Top Ten charts in Brazil and other territories, given the fervent interest in motorsports around the world.

Formula One, or F1, as a sport, has always fascinated many people around the world. Thanks to Netflix’s Drive to Survive, F1 is finally back in everyone’s lingo and it is even more popular. Rush, directed by Ron Howard, is another popular movie that delved deep into the rivalry between Niki Lauda and James Hunt. Senna, however, is arguably considered one of the best F1 drivers to have lived. He is still considered an enigma, and the documentary on him by Asif Kapadia expanded on that. Senna, the brand new Brazilian Netflix Original miniseries, is about the famed F1 driver who was considered a rebel and expands on the life he led until he became the world champion. As his relationships with family and friends are also explored, it gives the audience a peek into why he was considered a rebel.

Directed by Vicente Amorim and Julia Rezende, Netflix’s Senna is the real-life story of the F1 racer who was considered to be one of the best of his time. Senna came from a wealthy background, but he still didn’t want to join his family business, as he was way too passionate about the sport. I believe that it was Senna’s obsession that led him to win many Grand Prix races, but in the end, he ended up sacrificing a lot for the sport. So, let’s find out what kind of a person Senna was, why he got so obsessed with racing, and how he met his fateful end.
Spoiler Alert

Patrick Willems has ruined biographical movies and shows for me. Well, to be honest, he was talking about musical biopics in his video, and I am using the word “ruined” jokingly because that video helped me view biopics in a totally new light. The crux of Patrick’s thesis was that the reverence with which the subject of a biopic is usually treated is tepid, formulaic, and hence, boring. Now, if you don’t know a lot about the person in question, you don’t care about the filmmaking and storytelling of a biopic, because you’re too busy gathering information. However, due to the evolution of the internet, knowledge is at your fingertips. So, when you’re not watching a biopic for the info, the shortcomings in the filmmaking and storytelling become obvious. Ever since I learned this, biographical dramas have become the least interesting thing in the world of entertainment for me.

Senna came at the perfect time for Kaya Scodelario.
She had been in search of the right project, a production shot in Brazil and crafted by its people — something that would tug at the strings of her half-Brazilian heart and challenge her. “It was like Christmas morning,” the star says of finding there was a role going in Netflix series Senna. Her mother moved to England from Brazil shortly before Scodelario was born, but the Skins and The Gentlemen star often spent summers there growing up and has always felt deeply attached to that side of her identity.
“Senna was a huge part of my childhood,” she says of the former racing driver. “To every Brazilian, he is a hero and an icon, and culturally so significant.” She’s right: Ayrton Senna da Silva was the face of Formula One for a long time and his legacy has endured through decades.

As Netflix expands its live output in a big way over the next few months, chief content officer Bela Bajaria said she wasn’t concerned about last weekend’s buffering hiccups during the Mike Tyson/Jake Paul fight. Speaking with reporters on Monday morning during Netflix’s International Showcase (more on that in a moment), Bajaria said the streamer felt “very ready” for its next big live event: Two NFL games on Christmas Day.

Brad Pitt will go all out to promote the June 2025 release of F1, producer Jerry Bruckheimer said Thursday.
“Brad is really invested in this movie,” Buckheimer said during an appearance at Liberty Media’s investor day in New York. “He doesn’t like to do press, but I think we’ll take him on a world tour where he’ll be glad to show his efforts in driving and acting in this movie.”
Formula One was acquired in 2016 by Liberty. The company, controlled by media billionaire John Malone, invited Bruckheimer to its investor meeting to drum up enthusiasm for the film project, which was made with its co-operation. It is the latest screen promotion for the auto racing circuit, following the multi-season success of Drive to Survive on Netflix. The streamer is also getting set to release limited series Senna, a scripted take on the late F1 driver Ayrton Senna.

But for the moments when you want to look away from wall-to-wall coverage (or just stop doomscrolling), Netflix has plenty to keep you occupied. There’s new original Christmas movies like “Hot Frosty” and “The Merry Gentlemen,” as well as more “Outer Banks” for fans of that show created by Josh Pate, Jonas Pate, and Shannon Burke. Plus Oscar contenders like “Emilia Perez” are now streaming on the service. But all of that is just preamble to our No. 1 pick this month, because when Mike Schur has a new television show, it’s time to pay attention.
Top Pick: “A Man on the Inside”
Created by Schur and loosely based on the 2020 documentary “The Mole Agent,” the eight-episode comedy series will star Ted Danson, who volunteers to help a private detective by going undercover at a nursing...

Could the next Squid Game, Lupin or Money Heist hail from Latin America? TV history teaches us you cannot engineer a global hit, but with three tentpole projects launching in the next few months, Netflix is stacking the odds in favor of the next worldwide watercooler show coming from the region. Each of Netflix’s big three is a local landmark, the streamer’s biggest show out of its country of origin. Or, in the case of Senna, the biggest ever from the region. This is super-premium TV, Latin America-style.

YouTube has become Netflix‘s biggest rival in the world of streaming. The latter company’s Co-CEO thinks that his platform’s superlative stories are still a difference maker, but is his view outdated?
Ted Sarandos was asked about YouTube during Netflix’s Q3 2024 earnings call. Those two platforms account for half of all streaming traffic, but Sarandos still believes his SVOD service has a competitive edge over YouTube.
“Netflix is the best place for premium stories because we’re the home to the best storytellers,” Sarandos said. “When I look at YouTube specifically, I’d say look, we compete directly with YouTube for people’s time, for the time they spend on that TV screen. But we have very different strengths.”
That answer sounds similar to the one Sarandos’ fellow Co-CEO, Greg Peters, gave in response to a question about YouTube during the Q2 2024 Netflix earnings call. At the time,...

Asif Kapadia sees a future vision of the world where “chairwoman” Ivanka Trump is celebrating her 30th year as leader of a nightmarish fascist police state that was once America, a land mostly reduced to rubble following an unknown “catastrophe” that occurred in 2036.

“Because if you look at American politics, you have certain families that just keep being in power — the number of people that have come from a tiny gene pool is insane,” he says.

Roger Federer’s Poignant Farewell To Pro Tennis Documented In ‘Twelve Final Days’ – Tribeca Festival
In men’s tennis, as in other sports, there is constant debate over which player qualifies as the Greatest of All Time. Djokovic with his unprecedented 24 Grand Slam wins? Nadal with his astonishing 14 French Open victories? Federer, the first man to win 20 Grand Slams? Or perhaps a player from an earlier era – Rod Laver – who swept all four Grand Slam titles in a calendar year, not once but twice?
The Goat debate in tennis will never be resolved. But there is broad consensus on one thing: no one has ever played the game with as much grace, as much beauty, with such effortless shot making and economy of form as the man from Basel, Switzerland – Roger Federer. It was, therefore, with enormous sadness but heartfelt appreciation that tennis fans greeted the news in 2022 that Federer, bowing to time, would retire from the sport he defined for more than 20 years.

Producer Joe Sabia first encountered tennis legend Roger Federer in 2019 for Vogue’s “73 Questions” series. Sabia enjoyed the interview and kept in touch with his team. Three years later, as Federer looked to retire from the sport as a professional player, Sabia was brought into his offices. Federer was planning to officially announce the news via his Instagram page with an audio message accompanying the post. His team pondered if Federer’s retirement should be filmed.
But Sabia responded, “Yes,” believing “it’d be a mistake not to.’”
As conversations went back and forth, the idea was that the video would be stripped back, private, under the radar, and like Federer himself, effortless. So, Sabia used two cameras, and the idea was to shoot an 8 to 12-minute film. “If Roger doesn’t want anyone to see it, I’m completely fine doing this, knowing that it’s going to be just for friends and family,...
