Last month, we featured three films that dealt with loss. This time we wanted to bring together films that take a look at what haunts us after; the lingering remains of a life that don’t just fade away, the ones that go bump in the night. With Halloween and the Day of the Dead coming up, this month’s Fiscal Sponsorship highlights feature demons, vampires and shapeshifters, you know, the lighter side of death. Get ready for a good scare.
As always, these projects were helped by Film Independent’s 501(c)3 nonprofit status to obtain institutional grants and tax-deductible donations via Fiscal Sponsorship. Learn how it works in the short video below or in this full-length Fiscal Sponsorship Q&a.

Another hotly anticipated Disney+ sci-fi series has been cancelled according to one of the creatives behind the project.
Disney+ purged dozens of already-released movies and shows from its service in May 2023, including decently budgeted series like Willow and The Mysterious Benedict Society. Hulu followed suit that Summer with its own removals. In the following months, planned shows like The Spiderwick Chronicles were abandoned from the service.
These moves were true signs that the 'Peak TV' era of Hollywood had reached its end, with media conglomerates like Disney no longer splurging on countless projects to boost subscriber counts for their streaming services, instead becoming much more selective with which ones it decides to greenlight and keep on its service.

With the nominations round of Emmy voting done, all that’s left to do is tabulate the choices and reveal the nominees in July. And then vote again. And tabulate again. And hand out the actual awards.
Regardless, the nominations news will be delivered by two previous Emmy winners: Tony Hale and Sheryl Lee Ralph. The pair are set to anchor the nominations ceremony on Wednesday, July 17, at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood. A live stream of the announcement will be available on the Television Academy’s Emmy website.
“While this year has been marked by significant challenges for our industry and its workforce, there has been an abundance of remarkable programs, extraordinary performances and impactful storytelling,” said Television Academy chair Cris Abrego. “Great television relies on the contributions of so many, and we are delighted to have Tony and Sheryl help us acknowledge excellence across our field as...

Exclusive: Craig Zisk has been tapped to direct and executive produce Season 2 of Taylor Sheridan’s Paramount+ original series Tulsa King, starring Sylvester Stallone, which has started production. Now designated as a comedy series, Tulsa King will film in Oklahoma and Atlanta.
As Deadline reported in February, Terence Winter, who stepped down as showrunner of the mob drama/comedy after its first season, has come back as a writer on Season 2 in addition to his continuing duties as an executive producer. The series opted not to get a replacement for Winter in line with the practice at the other Sheridan series produced by 101 Studios that don’t have a traditional showrunner. Instead, Tulsa King, produced by MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios, was to bring in a director/executive producer, which it now has with Zisk’s hire.

This is why we can’t have nice things. Disney+ announced today that it will not move forward with a second season of the action-fantasy series American Born Chinese. The decision to cancel the series comes seven months after Disney debuted the eight-episode series on its streaming service, Disney+. The cancelation is raising a red flag for fans of the series, as Disney tends to purge content from Disney+ to save money and digital real estate. We’ve seen the mouse-eared streamer purge content before, with shows like Willow, Turner & Hooch, The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, The Mysterious Benedict Society, and more. According to Deadline, options on the cast expired yesterday. However, there could be a silver lining to this disappointing news. 20th Television still plans to shop the series to other outlets, giving the show a chance to live again through another platform.

The most honored program of the evening was actually Netflix’s “Lost Ollie,” which scored five trophies. Disney+’s wins included multiple awards for “The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special” and animated series “Baymax!” Nickelodeon picked up five wins.
And it was also a good night for Disney via its linear Disney Channel, which picked up four wins.
Presenters included Tamara Almeida (“Jane”), Ceci Balagot (“Monster High: The Movie”), Eric Bauza (voice of Bugs Bunny and others), Tantoo Cardinal (“Spirit Rangers”), Nayah Damasen (“Monster High: The Movie”), Miia Harris (“Monster High: The Movie”), Sonia Manzano (“Alma’s Way”), Ava Louise Murchison (“Jane”), and...

As the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences continues to figure out how and when to finally hold this year’s Daytime Emmys — delayed in June due to the WGA strike — it has gone ahead and announced the nominations for this year’s 2nd Annual Children’s & Family Emmys.
There’s no date yet for this year’s Chidren’s & Family Emmys — NATAS is likely waiting for a hopeful soon resolution to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike before firming up dates. But last year, winners were announced during two ceremonies—one focused on creative and technical arts, and the other to performances and programming—at Wilshire Ebell Theatre on December 10 and 11. This year’s Cafe will likely be held around the same time — and NATAS could very well use that timeframe to simultaneously finally hold the Daytime Emmys as well.

Warwick Davis is the face of the “Willow” franchise, which kicked off in 1988 with Ron Howard’s fantasy film and continued with the short-lived Disney+ sequel series in 2022. Disney canceled the television series after only one eight-episode season, and then it pulled the show off of Disney+ entirely for cost-cutting measures. Davis is now calling out Disney on X (formerly Twitter), asking the studio in a recent post to answer the many fans wondering why they can no longer watch the show via streaming.
“I meet lovely people on a daily basis who are fans of ‘Willow,’ who are the reason the Disney+ series was made,” Davis posted. “Please tell me [Walt Disney Company], what do I say to these subscribers when they ask why they can’t watch the series any more? #embarrassing.”

At times it feels like if a news story breaks on Friday, Lifetime is there on Monday with an original movie at the ready. The speed of this brand that’s been around since 1984 isn’t just surprising to fans and reporters in the TV space.
“We surprise ourselves sometimes,” senior vice president of scripted programming Tia Maggini told TheWrap.
One of those surprising turnarounds happened around “Murdaugh Murders: The Movie,” a two-part project that makes history on Saturday for being the 500th original movie to air on the network.
According to Maggini, the team at Lifetime had been following the story of the Murdaugh family murders from the beginning. Though the “crazy” story captured their attention, the team was hesitant to move forward “legally” until the had a more definite idea of who committed the murders. But once Alex Murdaugh was arrested, the team went to work “towards the top of this year.

It's another historic first for Disney+ as seven movies that were abandoned from the streamer are now available on major digital platforms.
As part of a surprising move to cut down costs, Disney decided to remove several TV shows from Disney+, which included notable titles like Willow, Big Shot, and The Mysterious Benedict Society.
A good chunk of Disney+ original movies was also not safe from the content purge as the streamer removed the likes of the Cheaper By The Dozen reboot, Artemis Fowl, and Better Nate Than Never.

Facing litigation on multiple fronts, the Walt Disney Company has been served with another lawsuit from investors claiming that the company under former CEO Bob Chapek concealed the true costs of producing films and TV shows for its Disney+ streaming service.
In the 63-page lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court of Delaware and obtained by TheWrap, Stourbridge Investments LLC alleges that Chapek, along with his lieutenant Kareem Daniel and former CFO Christine McCarthy, initially aired shows greenlit as Disney+ originals on legacy outlets like Disney Channel and then shifted the marketing and production costs of those shows onto those outlets “as part of a scheme to make Disney+’s financial performance appear more successful than it really was.”

Add Vice to the list of disappeared series from cable and streaming outlets.
The documentary series was removed from Showtime and Paramount+ earlier in July as part of a broader set of programs taken off the Paramount Global services. Vice joins the likes of The L Word: Generation Q, Ziwe, I Love That for You and American Gigolo in being taken down from Showtime, which is focusing its programming on key franchises like Billions — which has several spinoffs in development — Dexter and The Chi.
But while the other pulled shows had finished their runs, Vice still had half a season remaining on its order, plus an episode featuring a segment on Florida governor and presidential candidate Ron DeSantis that was taken out of the rotation in May. At the time, Vice News, which produces the series, said in a statement, “As with all current affairs programming there can be scheduling changes,...

Disney+ fans can be forgiven for wondering just what will disappear from the service next. It’s been nearly two months since Disney executives announced during a conference call with investors and analysts that it would start removing titles from its streaming services in order to cut costs. In that time, dozens of titles have been pulled from Disney+ and Hulu.

The Television Critics Association awards nominations went public Friday, and it was great news for some series and sad news for others.
The Last of Us, The Bear, and Succession are in a three-way tie with five nominations apiece.
All three shows were expected to get some awards love, so their performances here are not surprising.
The Bear has been a bonafide hit for FX and Hulu, but there were some more first-year shows in the mix, too.
Andor, Jury Duty, Shrinking, Interview With the Vampire, and Poker Face were all well-represented.
Somewhat surprising: Ted Lasso and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel were shut out.
The news comes after both series have been big hits on the awards front and could set a precedent for upcoming awards shows.
Awards will be handed out at an in-person ceremony on August 7, 2023.

The final seasons of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and (maybe-probably) Ted Lasso got the cold shoulder from the Television Critics Assoc., which honored the Emmy-winning pair with a total of zero TCA Award nominations.
By contrast, Succession‘s swan song scored a leading five nods, putting the Roy family in a three-way tie with fellow HBO drama The Last of Us and Hulu’s breakout hit The Bear.

Following the cancellations of ABC’s “Alaska Daily” and “The Company You Keep” in May, both series are being pulled off Hulu as part of Disney’s ongoing review and removal of content in an effort to cut costs.

Eliza Skinner had no idea that her Disney+ series Earth to Ned would be permanently taken off the platform until a text on the show’s writer group chat in mid-May shared an article about Disney removing more than 70 films and series from its streaming services that month. Among the disappearing titles was the comedic talk show — which launched in 2020 with Skinner as head writer — centering on an alien welcoming celebrities to his spaceship.
Due to its classification as a streaming variety series, Skinner says the writers and performers weren’t receiving residuals, although the show’s team had heard rumors blaming Disney’s tax bill. But while her loss isn’t a financial one, Earth to Ned can no longer serve as a calling card to help land future gigs for Skinner, who also doesn’t own a physical copy of the show.

A week ago, Disney yanked 76 movies and TV series from streaming services Disney+ and Hulu. Now, in a Friday filing with the SEC, the company said it will record a $1.5 billion impairment charge in the ongoing quarter due to the “strategic change in approach to content curation.” In layman’s terms, Disney is writing off the value of the removed programming as a non-recoverable loss. The loss can be used to offset gains for tax purposes.
And, oh yeah, Disney’s probably not done deleting shows and films, per the filing. The company is “continuing its review and currently anticipates additional produced content will be removed from its [direct-to-consumer] and other platforms.” That will “largely” happen by the end of June; the removal of additional programming is expected to result in a further $400 million impairment charge.

Disney made it official with an SEC filing after the markets closed Friday, confirming it would take $1.5 billion in write-downs associated with removing streaming programming from its platforms.
The number came in on the low end of a range provided by the company last month when it released its quarterly earnings. (Read the new filing Here.) Like other media companies, Disney has been looking to trim expenses in the once-fevered streaming arena, and removing programming has been one means of reaching that goal. Rival service Max, the outlet recently rebranded by Warner Bros Discovery, has also drawn scrutiny for shedding a number of high-profile titles, though the removals are part of the larger reckoning with the daunting economics of streaming. The long-promised nirvana for consumers of a nearly endless storehouse of available titles has collided with the reality of how much that costs to sustain, both in terms of technology...

Disney, after removing dozens of shows and movies from Disney+ and Hulu last week, said it will incur a $1.5 billion impairment charge for the June quarter.

Over at Disney+, nearly everything developed under former CEO Bob Chapek is out, including dozens of movies and TV shows that are being pulled from the streamer.
“Willow,” “The World According to Jeff Goldblum” and “The Mysterious Benedict Society.” Also, say goodbye to Disney+ Originals movies, including “The Princess” with Joey King and “The One and Only Ivan” with Bryan Cranston, as well as “Wolfgang,” a documentary about celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck.
And even content that debuted earlier this year, such as “Marvel’s Voices Rising: The Music of Wakanda Forever,” will be gone soon.
At press time, Disney had not yet decided whether to yank “Howard,” a doc about the Oscar-winning lyricist behind ’90s classics “Beauty and the Beast” and “The Little Mermaid.”

Disney did a little (late) spring cleaning of its streaming services this week, removing several properties from Disney+ and Hulu. Among those that will go on May 26 include some high profile recent shows like “Willow,” “Y: The Last Man,” “Dollface,” and “The World According to Jeff Goldblum.” What makes this troubling for many home viewers who may have been fans (or even stans!) of the affected programs is that, in most cases, there are no Blu-ray/DVD options. In the old days you could always hit record on your Vcr to build a personal library, but it’s not so easy to capture material from streaming—and the whole point of streaming is not needing to do that, right?
As per The Verge, Disney’s cost-cutting is due to a reduction in Disney+ subscribers, to the tune of 4 million in 2023. While the company will have to pay a “content impairment charge” of over $1.5 billion,...

For Halloween 2021, Disney+ entered the world of R.L. Stine with “Just Beyond,” an 8-episode anthology series based on Stine’s line of comic books. The series never got a second season, with Disney+ leaving its fate hanging in the balance these past two years.
Unfortunately, we’ve learned this week that Stine’s “Just Beyond” will be one of many Disney+ original projects that are soon being deleted from the streaming service entirely.

If Mickey Mouse has any lawyers in his close circle of friends, they may be needed by the Disney legal team soon. According to The Wrap, the company is headed back to court, this time to combat a class-action lawsuit brought on behalf of Local 272 Labor-Management Pension Fund in California Central District Court.
The suit alleges that under the guidance of former CEO Bob Chapek, departed executive Kareem Daniel, current CFO Christine McCarthy, and Disney “inappropriately” shifted titles it advertised as Disney+ Originals to linear TV platforms like the Disney Channel, Freeform, FX, and more. This allowed the company to shift the marketing budgets for those shows to its linear segment, which misrepresented the success of its streaming platform.

The Walt Disney Co. and former CEO Bob Chapek were named in a class action lawsuit brought on Friday for allegedly engaging in a “fraudulent scheme” to make Disney+ appear more successful than it was.
The defendants, which also includes ex-Disney exec Kareem Daniel and CFO Christine McCarthy, are accused of “inappropriately” moving Disney+ originals and their marketing budgets to legacy platforms like The Disney Channel, and thus misrepresenting the success of the newly launched streaming platform.
“As part of a scheme to make Disney+’s financial performance appear more successful than it was, defendants aired certain shows that were supposed to be Disney+ originals – such as the mystery show ‘The Mysterious Benedict Society’ and the medical drama ‘Doogie Kameāloha, M.D.’ – first on legacy television networks such as the Disney Channel. By doing so, a significant portion of the marketing and production costs of the shows were shifted away from Disney+,” the suit alleges.

The mysteries at the center of National Treasure: Edge of History will remain unsolved.
Disney+ has officially canceled its TV spinoff of the hit movie series.
Deadline first reported the news on Friday.
Lisette Alexis, Zuri Reed, Jordan Rodrigues, Antonio Cipriano, Jake Austin Walker, and Lyndon Smith starred as series regulars.
Catherine Zeta-Jones also appeared as Billie, a badass billionaire with an eye for black-market antiques.
Movie series veteran Justin Bartha reprised the role of computer expert Riley Poole from the movies.
The series was described as an expansion of the National Treasure movie franchise told from the point of view of a young heroine, Jess (Lisette Olivera), a brilliant and resourceful DREAMer in search of answers about her family -- who embarks on the adventure of a lifetime to uncover the truth about the past and save a lost Pan-American treasure.
