Writer Stephen Merchant has stated the idea for the show came to him as his mother used to do work overseeing community service, and thought about how having people from different walks of life placed into the same situation would make an interesting plot line.

Has already been renewed for a second season
On Monday, 29th November 2021, BBC One and Amazon Studios officially announced that the comedy thriller has been re-commissioned for a second series, ahead of the launch of series one outside the UK via Amazon Prime. Series one was the biggest comedy launch on the BBC in 2021 having been streamed 11 million times on the BBC's iPlayer video-on-demand service. The official press release states that filming on series two has already been completed and that series two will air in 2022.
