Holiday movies have been with us for some time, but we now live in an era of the holiday streaming movie. This year, Hulu managed to get Ben Stiller for their Christmas effort "Nutcrackers," while Max recruited Kiernan Shipka, who played Sabrina Spellman in two seasons of Netflix's "Chilling Adventures of Sabrina," for the Thanksgiving-themed rom com "Sweethearts."

Since "Sabrina" was canceled due to the global pandemic, Shipka has appeared in "Back to the Future"-like slasher comedy "Totally Killer," and Roku's TV remake of "Swimming with Sharks." In 2024, she had small parts in the box office record-breaking "Twisters," and Oz Perkins' hit horror effort "Longlegs." Now, Deadline reports that Alliance Media Partners is representing the world sales rights for a time travel supernatural thriller called You Don’t Belong Here at the American Film Market, which is currently going on in Las Vegas. If the plot of Time Cut sounds a bit familiar, it should, Totally Killer covered much of the same ground not that long ago. But despite being released second, Time Cut was actually filmed a year before Totally Killer was announced. Maybe it should have used its time machine to get to our screens first.

The film begins in 2003 in Sweetly, Minnesota, where a killer known as The Sweetly Slasher has been targeting the local teens. Summer’s best friend Emmy was one of the victims, and she’s forced herself to come to the party honouring her and the other victims.

Unfortunately, the party gets some uninvited guests in the form of the police and The Sweetly Slasher himself. In the confusion, Summer ends up becoming a victim herself.

Exclusive: Lionsgate has snapped up rights to Three Hitmen and a Baby, an action comedy spec from Dave Matalon (Totally Killer) and Matt Altman (Red Widow), Deadline can exclusively reveal.

Pic’s logline is being kept under wraps, though its title clearly riffs on the classic 1987 comedy Three Men and a Baby, starring Tom Selleck, Steve Guttenberg, and Ted Danson, about three bachelors whose lives change forever when a baby suddenly appears on their doorstep. Kelly McCormick and David Leitch will produce through their company 87North, for whom Max Jacoby is overseeing the project. Meredith Wieck and Jon Humphrey are overseeing for Lionsgate.

Screenwriter Matalon most recently co-wrote the slasher comedy Totally Killer! for Blumhouse and Amazon, which headlined Prime Video’s Halloween season last year. As we first reported, his sci-fi action script Level Up, also written with Altman, is in development with The Hideaway and Vandal Entertainment.

To mark the spookiest day of the year, Screen Gems (via Bloody Disgusting) has released the first red band teaser trailer for a new horror movie titled Heart Eyes, and it promises to deliver a bloody Valentine's Day massacre.

Directed by Josh Ruben, the premise focuses on a masked killer known as Heart Eyes who only targets couples.

“My love of horror is rivaled only by my love of romantic comedies," said Ruben in a recent interview. "I’m excited as hell to mount my most challenging genre bender to date: a brutal slasher in a nostalgic rom-com universe.”

The teaser doesn't really show us much... until the last few shots, which spotlight a pretty inventive and gruesome kill. We see Heart Eyes plunge a carjack into an unfortunate victim's mouth, then grab his girlfriend and impale her head on the other end of it.

Those that were now being made were either part of a legacy franchise (updates to Scream or Halloween or next year’s I Know What You Did Last Summer) or were hinged on a goofy gimmick. We had time loops (the Happy Death Day series), time travel (Totally Killer), timeline jumping (the excellent Fear Street trilogy), alternate realities (It’s a Wonderful Knife) or body swapping (the underrated Freaky), brash genre-bending variations that all seemed a little reticent to rely solely on the base pleasures of the formula.

Last year, Amazon and Blumhouse released a fantastic slasher horror/comedy from Nahnatchka Khan. Totally Killer told the story of a teenager who goes back in time to save her mom. It was a terrific blend of great kills, a fantastic script, and a ton of heart. If you were a fan of that, no film this year will be as offensive as Time Cut. Director Hannah Macpherson tells the same story, but with a PG-13 rating, worse kills, a weaker script, lamer direction, and a less talented cast, this throwback thriller is another terrible addition to Netflix’s uninspired catalog.

Once again airing on AMC’s Shudder, the 2024 Fangoria Chainsaw Awards has shifted the annual awards show’s shift to October; as such, the window of this year’s eligible horrors is an expanded one, encompassing all of 2023 and the first half of 2024. That means a much bigger selection of horror titles to pull from, and with the expanded categories this year, that means a massive list of 46 nominees. Exclusive: Nahnatchka Khan is staying at Universal Television, the studio behind her upcoming Peacock comedy series Laid. Khan, who is coming off a four-year overall deal at Universal TV, has closed a first-look pact with the studio, a division of Universal Studio Group.

Under the multi-year deal, Khan will continue to create, develop, write, supervise and produce new projects for network, cable and streaming via her production company, Fierce Baby Productions. That includes series Killer Potential, based on the upcoming debut novel by Hannah Deitch, which is currently in development.

Fierce Baby and Universal TV won the rights to the book, which will be published in March 2025 by William Morrow, an imprint of HarperCollins, in a competitive, multi-studio bidding war.

The only award season that matters is here! Joking (kind of), but seriously, Fangoria just released the complete list of nominees for the 2024 Fangoria Chainsaw Awards. Considering how often horror gets shut out of the mainstream award shows, it's nice to have at least one thing we can rely on year after year.

Last year's Chainsaw Awards included big wins for movies like The Black Phone, Terrifier 2, and Prey. This time, the categories are again stacked, with films like Abigail, Evil Dead Rise, The First Omen, Talk To Me, Late Night with the Devil, and many more going head to head.

Specific performances are also being highlighted, like Tobin Bell in Saw X and Kathryn Newton for both Lisa Frankenstein and Abigail. It's been a fantastic few years for horror, and it'll be exciting to see which movies pull ahead this time around.

New cast additions for the upcoming Valentine's Day slasher Heart Eyes have been announced. Devon Sawa and Jordana Brewster have reportedly joined the film's cast, which is currently in production in New Zealand.

We first learned of this film earlier this month. On June 10, Heart Eyes was announced to be in the works for Spyglass. It was described as an original horror romantic comedy with Josh Ruben directing from a screenplay written by Phillip Murphy (The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard), Christopher Landon, and Michael Kennedy.

They join previously announced Olivia Holt and Mason Gooding.

The Josh Ruben-directed, Phillip Murphy, Christopher Landon, and Michael Kennedy-written feature follows a pair of co-workers in Seattle who are pulling overtime on Valentine’s Day. When the Heart Eyes Killer strikes, they’re mistaken for a couple by the elusive couple-hunting killer. The duo are forced to spend the most romantic night of the year running for their lives.

Republic Pictures picked up distribution rights to Heart Eyes excluding the U.S. and Canada.

Landon and Divide/Conquer’s Greg Gilreath and Adam Hendricks are producing. Spyglass’ Gary Barber and Chris Stone are EPs with Murphy and Mel Turner.

The cast also includes Gigi Zumbado. Zumbado’s previous credits include Kenya Barris’ multi-cam comedy Unrelated and recurring roles on ABC’s Promised Land and Fox’s 9-1-1. Zumbado stars opposite Emile Hirsch and Stephen Dorff in the indie feature The Price We Pay.

Brewster has starred in the $6 billion plus grossing Fast & Furious franchise as Mia Torretto. We previously reported that New Line Cinema is developing a horror-based spinoff of the Rebel Wilson-led rom-com Isn't It Romantic titled Isn't It Scary. And now Spyglass appears to be treading into the genre-bending territory with the upcoming original horror romantic comedy Heart Eyes.

According to an exclusive from Deadline, Heart Eyes will star Cruel Summer vet Olivia Holt and Scream alum Mason Gooding. The film revolves around a murderer nicknamed the "Heart Eyes Killer" who targets couples. When two co-workers get roped into working overtime on Valentine's Day, the killer mistakes them for a couple, and they spend the evening running for their lives.

Heart Eyes is currently filming in New Zealand. Josh Ruben will direct the film, co-written by Phillip Murphy (The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard) and Freaky scribes Christopher Landon and Michael Kennedy. Landon was previously attached to direct the seventh Scream movie, also in the works at Spyglass.

Spyglass has been building their horror portfolio over the last couple years, reviving the Scream franchise with Scream (2022) and Scream VI, as well as bringing the world Eli Roth’s long-awaited Grindhouse spin-off Thanksgiving (which is getting a sequel). Now Deadline reports that the Spyglass project Heart Eyes, described as a horror romantic comedy, has started filming in New Zealand, with Olivia Holt of Totally Killer and Mason Gooding from Spyglass’s two Scream movies leading the cast. We don’t know whether or not Gooding is going to show up in Scream 7, but he just can’t seem to avoid the slashers.
