Exclusive: Barrett Carnahan (Cobra Kai) has been cast in the Apple TV+ series For All Mankind for the space drama’s upcoming fifth season. In a recurring role, he will portray ‘Marcus,’ a recent high school graduate living on Mars.

In the eight years since Season 3, Happy Valley has rapidly expanded its footprint on Mars by turning former foes into partners. Exclusive: Ahead of the release of his Paramount holiday comedy Dear Santa, starring Jack Black, Bobby Farrelly has found his next project in Sporkinfeesten, a “finding your roots” style family vacation comedy loosely inspired by true events, which has landed at Amazon MGM Studios.

Netflix’s latest data dump has given more insight into its decision-making process when it comes to renewals and cancellations.

While the streamer has always said those decisions come down to performance vs. cost, its third What We Watched report is beginning to crystallize what some of the thresholds are for various genres, as well as what “performance” means to Netflix beyond just raw viewership numbers.

Shooting this summer in Montana, the film follows Chase (Donovan), a rugged cowboy and solitary drifter who closed off his heart long ago — until the day he impulsively does a kindness for a beautiful young woman (Elaine), and everything changes in three days.

Freshman drama Obliterated held the dubious distinction of being the most watched Netflix series in the second half of 2023 to be canceled, according to the streamer’s viewership data made public today. Released Nov. 30, the action comedy was #20 in the rankings for the six-month period, generating 27M views in its first month of release.

The high position should not come as a surprise as Obliterated spent a respectable six weeks in the Netflix Top 10 for English-language series, peaking at #1 in Week 2.

Since the streamer largely bases its renewal decisions on analyzing viewing vs. cost, the size of the latter must have outweighed the magnitude of the former, which would also explain why a show like Sweet Magnolias (#37 on the list with 20.9M views over 5+ months), was comfortably renewed.

The final season of Cobra Kai will be less bingeable than usual. That’s because Netflix is splitting the supersized season six across three release dates.

On Thursday, the streamer released a teaser trailer (below), along with its release strategy for the popular family drama series.

The 15-episode final season will drop Part 1 on July 18, then hold Part 2 until Nov. 28. A third part, dubbed “The Finale Event,” won’t be released until sometime in 2025.

The official description: “Picking up with Cobra Kai eliminated from the Valley, our senseis and students must decide if and how they will compete in the Sekai Taikai — the world championships of karate.”

Terrell won a Daytime Emmy for supporting actor for his role as Kwasi in Issa Rae’s web series Giants. He most recently was a series regular on Netflix’s action-comedy series Obliterated as well as Chuck Lorre’s CBS comedy series B Positive. He previously recurred on Bosch, Bigger and First Wives Club and also appeared in The Best Man: The Final Chapters.

Terrell recently wrapped the Joe Carnahan feature Not Without Hope with Zachary Levi. He is currently shooting the Peacock limited series Fight Night with Samuel L. Jackson, Kevin Hart, and Taraji P Henson.

News broke on Friday that Netflix had axed the crime dramedy after just one season.

The Peak TV era is officially over.

FX CEO John Landgraf, the so-called “Mayor of Television” who coined the term “Peak TV” in 2015, released his network’s annual research on the volume of U.S.-produced scripted original series for 2023, and the numbers are in line with what the industry had anticipated. The total number of broadcast, cable and streaming shows (made for adults) clocked in at 516, down a whopping 14 percent from the 600 comedies and dramas produced in 2022.

The 14 percent decline is the largest decrease since FX began tallying originals. The 516 shows are the lowest since 493 in 2020 when the pandemic halted productions for months and forced media companies to re-evaluate their financials.

The decline in the total volume of originals comes as no surprise as media companies canceled a wave of shows, some as a result of production delays caused by the dual strikes and others because they wouldn’t...

Netflix added 13.12 million subs over the final three months of 2023 — its best Q4 growth ever. The streaming leader now has 260.28 million global paid subscribers.

Wall Street’s consensus was that Netflix would add 8.8 million subscribers from October-December — a number it easily blew away, which sent the stock (Nflx) soaring in after-hours trading. That said, Tuesday’s earnings report was not a perfect one; while Netflix surpassed revenue estimates, it missed the mark on profit forecasts.

The streamer’s password-sharing crackdown, officially dubbed “paid sharing,” drove much of the quarter’s revenue growth. Price increases chipped in a bit, as did ads, though that final category’s growth lags paid sharing.

As previously reported, Netflix reached 23 million MAUs on its ad-supported tier at the end of December. That likely translates to about 12-15 million actual subs on the plan, the analysts at investment bank Evercore Isi estimated in a Friday note...

The streaming gods have smiled on Percy Jackson and the Olympians.

The Disney+ series based on author Rick Riordan’s best-selling books opened to a good-sized audience in the week before Christmas. The first two episodes, which debuted the evening of Dec. 19, drew about 572 million minutes of watch time, according to Nielsen’s streaming ratings. With a combined run time of 80 minutes, that works out to about 7.15 million complete runs (or “views” as currently defined by much of the industry) of the two episodes in the United States.

Disney had earlier said that the first episode had earned 13.3 million views worldwide — equivalent to a little more than 505 million minutes — over its first six days. The Nielsen figures for the premiere put Percy Jackson ahead of Disney+’s last two Marvel premieres, Secret Invasion (461 million minutes) and season two of Loki (446 million), in total viewing time.

Prime Video’s Reacher moved up to the overall No.

Reacher began its second season with big viewing-time numbers, cementing its status as one of the most popular shows on Amazon’s Prime Video.

The series based on Lee Child’s novels had 1.69 billion minutes of watch time for the week of Dec. 11-17; season two’s first three episodes debuted Dec. 15 (viewing time for the week also includes the eight episodes of season one). That’s within 10 percent of Reacher’s total for its series premiere week (1.84 billion minutes) in February 2022, when Prime Video released the entire season at once. Season two is on a weekly release pattern after the opening three-episode salvo.

The 1.69 billion minutes for Reacher put the series in second place overall in Nielsen’s streaming rankings for the week. Netflix’s movie Leave the World Behind repeated as the overall No. 1 title, edging up to 1.95 billion minutes of viewing from 1.92 billion the previous week.

Nielsen notes that Reacher‘s series debut on the Jan.

Amazon’s “Reacher” returned to Nielsen’s streaming top 10 at No. 2 during the Dec. 11-17 viewing window following the release of the first three episodes in Season 2 on Dec. 15. In its first three days of availability, the series snagged 1.7 billion viewing minutes. According to Nielsen, two-thirds of that audience belong to the ages 50+ demographic and 58% of the show’s viewers are male — a stat that has been carried over from Season 1.

For comparison, “Reacher” made its Nielsen’s Streaming Top 10 debut during the January 31 – February 6, 2022 interval as the No. 2 overall title and totaled 1.84 billion viewing minutes following its Feb. 4 premiere. Since the first Season saw a binge release with all eight episodes available for streaming same day, the title racked up 1.8 billion minutes viewed for all eight episodes in just three days as opposed to Season 2’s initial drop of three episodes.

Three weeks after premiering on Netflix, Young Sheldon has ascended to the most watched show on streaming platforms in the United States. A platform switch to Netflix also sent The Super Mario Bros. Movie to its biggest streaming week to date.

The two titles, which rank second and third on Nielsen’s streaming chart for the week of Dec. 4-10, are the latest examples of Netflix’s multiplying power. Young Sheldon had 1.63 billion minutes of viewing on Netflix and Max for the week, after recording 1.85 billion minutes a week earlier and 963 million for its first week on both platforms. The Big Bang Theory prequel had never charted before the past three weeks (it was previously exclusive to Max) and has easily surpassed its parent show in viewing time all three weeks. The Big Bang Theory had 592 million minutes of watch time on Max for Dec. 4-10.

One week after taking over the Nielsen streaming throne, Young Sheldon was ousted by Leave the World Behind.

Sam Esmail’s apocalyptic thriller debuted on December 8 and, as has been proven by Netflix’s own data over the past month, it has been incredibly popular. From December 4 to December 10, the film racked up 1.9B viewing minutes among U.S. audiences despite only being available for three days in the measurement period.

Leave the World Behind is well on its way to becoming one of Netflix’s most popular English-language movies of all time, so expect it to stick around the Nielsen charts through the December measurement periods, at the very least.

Young Sheldon dipped slightly in viewership after three weeks on Netflix, but it still managed 1.6B viewing minutes, putting it at second place overall. The comedy series has had a Suits-esque revival since becoming the latest Max library title...

Securing the streaming rights to “Young Sheldon” was a big win for Netflix. The “Big Bang Theory” prequel was viewed a total of 1.8 billion minutes on streaming, according to the latest insights from Nielsen.

These numbers reflect the period from Nov. 27 to Dec. 3. While streaming numbers were overall down during that week, “Young Sheldon” saw a 92% jump in viewership after being added to Netflix. Previously, the series was only available to stream on Max. 20% of those viewers were aged 50 years or older, a better ratio than the other traditional series that dominated the streaming landscape in 2023, “Suits” (50% of its viewing demographic was 50 years or older).

“Young Sheldon” was added to Netflix shortly after CBS announced it would be ending the Chuck Lorre comedy following the conclusion of its seventh season.

Over the festive period, the creators behind Cobra Kai have been busy interacting with fans and have given a few hints away at season 6, including a confirmed episode count (although there’s more to that than meets the eye) and some hints as to what’s coming.

Cobra Kai season 6 will have 10 episodes and an expanded runtime

The hits don’t stop for Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, the trio behind Cobra Kai and most recently, Netflix’s latest No. 1 hit, Obliterated.

Obliterated is a return to the trio’s roots which began with raunchy comedies like Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle (2004) and its follow-ups Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay (2008), Harold & Kumar Go to Amsterdam (2008) and A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas (2011); American Reunion (2012); Blockers (2018); and Hot Tub Time Machine (2010), among others.

The new 8-episode Netflix series, currently available to stream in its entirety, follows an elite joint-special operations team assembled from various branches of the U.S. Armed Forces and intelligence services to stop a deadly terrorist network from blowing up Las Vegas. Netflix’s newest action comedy, Obliterated, from the Cobra Kai creating trio of Jon Hurwitz, Josh Heald and Hayden Schlossberg, co-stars Nick Zano, Shelley Hennig and Terrence Terrell as part of an elite special forces team who wake up with a massive hangover and are tasked with saving Las Vegas from a nuclear threat.

In conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, the trio (separately; their answers are combined) reveal what it was like behind the scenes of the thrill-ride adventure series, withstanding Navy Seal training in the sweltering 120-degree Albuquerque heat, doing their own high-octane stunts, and how filming on the Las Vegas Strip — among real vacationers, tourists and pedestrians alike — added an element of authenticity to the scenes.

What attracted each of you to this role?

Shelley Hennig: At the time, I was in the middle of this really intense drama, and I felt like the next project I wanted to do was a comedy.

“Leave the World Behind” opened with a bang as the apocalyptic thriller cracked the Netflix Top 10 during the Dec. 4-10 viewing window at No. 1 on the English Films list with 41.7 million views, making it the most-viewed title this week as viewers attempted to dissect that final theory in director Sam Esmail’s adaptation of Rumaan Alam’s novel of the same name.

Starring Julia Roberts, Ethan Hawke, Mahershala Ali, and Myha’la, the film landed on the streamer on Dec. 8 following its world premiere at AFI Festival on Nov. 22.

The film was followed by “Family Switch,” starring Jennifer Garner and Ed Helms, which scored the No. 2 spot on the English films chart with 18.6 million views, then Adam Sandler’s animated comedy, “Leo”

Leave the World Behind dominated Netflix last week.

From December 4 to 10, the new apocalyptic thriller from director Sam Esmail racked up a whopping 41.7M views, easily making it No. 1 among English-language films and the most-watched title of the week. This is especially impressive, considering that the film landed on Netflix on December 8, after a short theatrical window.

For context, second place went to Family Switch with just 18.6M views. Leo, Adam Sandler’s animated film, held onto third place with 14.2M views, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie managed to race to No. 4 with 13.2M views.

Over on the TV side of things, Obliterated took over the top spot from Squid Game: The Challenge. In its second week on the list, the comedy series took home 9M views.

“Squid Game: The Challenge” was the number one English language TV show on Netflix for the second straight week.

For the week of Nov. 27-Dec. 3, the reality competition show racked up 11.4 million views. That is on top of the 20.5 million views the show drew in its debut week. Elsewhere on the Top 10 chart, the new series “Obliterated” from the team behind “Cobra Kai” debuted at number three on the English TV chart with 7 million views. “The Crown” Season 6, Part One slipped to number four this week, down from number two last week. The latter six episodes are expected to arrive on Dec. 14.

Other shows in the Top 10 this week include “Bad Surgeon: Love Under the Knife” with 7.4 million views, “Young Sheldon: Season 1” at 2.7 million views, and “Young Sheldon: Season 2” with 1.7 million views.

On the film side, the animated Adam Sandler film “Leo” also remained at number one, adding 23.6 million views to its initial 34.6 million.

There was no changing of the guard for Netflix’s Top 10 this week.

After making the streamer’s biggest animated film debut ever, Adam Sandler’s Leo stayed atop the English-language film list from November 27 to December 3 with another 23.6M views. That made it the most-viewed title on the service for the second consecutive week.

Same thing goes for the TV side of things, where Squid Game: The Challenge remained the top series of the week despite the audience dropping dramatically. The reality competition series mustered 11.4M views, also boosting Squid Game to No. 7 on the Non-English TV list with 1.5M views.

Elsewhere in film, Family Switch debuted at No. 2 with 22.2M views, while holiday films including Best.Christmas.Ever! and Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch continued to dominate the remainder of the list. David Fincher’s The Killer spent its fourth week on the list at No. 7 with 3.6M views,...

Obliterated, the eight-part Netflix comedy series, has an entertaining plot but some really problematic characters who try too hard to be funny yet fall flat on their faces. It revolved around an elite group of CIA agents who were on the hunt for a Russian arms dealer who had created a lethal nuclear device with the intention of blowing up the entire city of Las Vegas.
