I watched the UK 🇬🇧 horror-comedy Get Away (2024) in theaters this evening. The storyline follows a family determined to take a holiday on an infamous Swedish 🇸🇪 island with a dark history of revolutions, cults, outbreaks, and mass deaths. Initially excited to explore the island's eerie past, their enthusiasm turns to dread when they attend a historical play and realize they may have become part of the show...
Directed by Steffen Haars (New Kids Turbo), the film stars Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead), Aisling Bea (Swede Caroline), Sebastian Croft (Wonderwell), Eero Milonoff (Border), and Anitta Suikkari (Let the River Flow).
This movie is absolutely wild and far more fun than I anticipated. The storyline features a strong setup and takes a shocking twist at the end that's executed brilliantly. The settings, costumes, masks, and overall atmosphere are spot-on, while the performances complement the quirky tone of the film. The husband-and-wife dynamic is portrayed perfectly, and the over-the-top locals kept me smiling throughout-though I could've done with fewer kisses and tongue. 😂 The cinematography and background music enhance the film's mood, adding to its charm.
The comedic elements are a highlight, with the "lick" and "meow" scenes being particularly memorable. Meanwhile, the kill scenes are crafted with precision, featuring stabs, slices, and a standout decapitation. There's so much to like here.
In conclusion, Get Away is an outstanding addition to the horror-comedy genre and an absolute must-see. I'd rate it a 7/10 and strongly recommend it.
