Ti West's "Pearl," a prequel to his subversive slasher "X," is one of the best horror movies in recent years. Mia Goth's spellbinding performance as a lonely, sadistic farmer's daughter with big dreams carries the film. Both "Pearl" and "X," as well as the upcoming third film in the trilogy, "MaXXXine," honor the film and pornography industries and study the allure of stardom through a celluloid aesthetic that captures a particular era in cinema history.
"X" was Ti West's homage to the schlocky 1970s grindhouse movies and the available snippet of "MaXXXine" seems to capture the grainy VHS artificiality of the 1980s. "Pearl," meanwhile, is like looking at classic Hollywood through a funhouse mirror. Ti West tells Filmmaker Magazine that he used the same dazzling Technicolor palette as "The Wizard of Oz." These striking colors are a visual expression of Pearl's romantic fantasies yet they feel uncanny as if something sinister lurks beneath.

The UK government is introducing a series of points-based immigration reforms that it says will make it easier and faster for people who have won various arts awards to receive a visa to live and work in the country.
Anyone who has won a specific category at the Oscars, BAFTAs or Golden Globes, such as the BAFTA best film prize, as well as a series of other awards from various disciplines, can as of Wednesday go via a fast-track system that allows them to make a single visa application. This replaces the previous ‘Global Talent’ system that required an endorsement from one of six qualifying bodies.

It has already been a banner year for Black women filmmakers, with historic achievements like Nia DaCosta set to become the first Black woman to direct a Marvel film with “Captain Marvel 2” and Ava DuVernay selected as the first female filmmaker to receive the prestigious Dorothy and Lillian Gish prize. And film fans should add “(In)Visible Portraits” director Oge Egbuonu on the list of names to know.
“It’s unprecedented. I can’t remember a time where so many Black women were given an opportunity and a platform to tell their stories in such a beautiful and unapologetic and organic way. It’s a very beautiful thing to witness and to be a part of,” Egbuonu tells Variety ahead of a special presentation of her documentary at the Bentonville Film Festival.

Liam Docherty molds vintage soul into something fearsome and kinetic on “Dorothy,” part of his upcoming East Coast Edits Ep. The approach here is tried and true — find an under-appreciated oldie, preferably one with a stirring, textured lead vocal, then tinker with the constituent parts until everything is taut and weaponized. In this case, the results are unimpeachable.
“Dorothy” starts with a cascade of hand percussion and a slicing brass loop. The backing vocals arrive first in the form of a descending line that stays just out of hearing; that means when the lead enters,...

This week’s one-two punch of the Golden Globes and SAG Awards nominations have thrown awards season prognosticators into a frenzy, but they actually help to provide some clarification for the streaming wars.
HBO received nine SAG Awards nominations Wednesday morning; meanwhile, Warner Bros. Television, also owned by AT&T, was among several studios that tied for second place with four SAG Award nominations. Given that these award-nominated properties will have a direct line of distribution to AT&T-owned streaming, their success bodes well for the 2020 launch of HBO Max.
HBO was among the studios behind well-received projects such as “Chernobyl,” “Barry,” which each received two SAG Award nominations; though critics and viewers were divided on the final season of “Game of Thrones,” the show still earned three nominations. HBO’s production successes were also elevated by “Big Little Lies” and “True Detective,” which each received one nomination. “Big Little Lies...

Twin Peaks Recap is a weekly column by Keith Uhlich covering David Lynch and Mark Frost's limited, 18-episode continuation of the Twin Peaks television series. The key image in Part 5 of the revived Twin Peaks is of a woman in ecstasy. Recall, however, the subtitle that series co-creator/director David Lynch appended to his thorny 2006 masterpiece Inland Empire: "A Woman in Trouble." The line separating rapture and anguish is a blurry one, especially for Lynch's ladies, who are as likely to end up exquisitely chiseled corpses (the ubiquitous Laura Palmer; Part 2's doomed henchwoman Darya) as they are world-weary survivors. For the moment, let's focus on Rebecca "Becky" Burnett (Amanda Seyfried), daughter of Rr Diner waitress Shelly Johnson (Mädchen Amick), though Becky's last name—taken from ne'er-do-well husband Steven Burnett (Caleb Landry Jones)—obscures the identity of her father. (Dana Ashbrook's now-law-abiding Bobby Briggs is the most likely candidate,...

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is following yesterday's news of Colin Farrell's Wizard casting with a lesser-known but possibly just as vital addition.
Irish actress Jenn Murray will have a "key role" in the Harry Potter spinoff, according to The Wrap.
Jk Rowling has written the script, expanding her Potter universe, with director David Yates returning to the series.
Eddie Redmayne will play the lead Newt Scamander, a magical zoologist on an adventure in New York.
Katherine Waterston and Alison Sudol have been cast as sisters alongside Ezra Miller and Dan Fogler.
Murray will apparently appear in scenes with Miller, who is expected to be Scamander's rival.
The actress has previously starred in Dorothy Mills alongside Carice van Houten, while she has upcoming roles in Love and Friendship opposite Chloe Sevigny and Stephen Fry, and Brooklyn with Saoirse Ronan. She also appeared in BBC dramas Truckers and The Fades.

Tribeca 2011 marks the world premier of Agnès Merlet's (Dorothy Mills) intriguing looking teen drama about living with powers beyond your control. It sort of reminds me of a kitchen sink Heroes, though I doubt the characters in Merlet's film band together to fight any super villains.
Here's the beef:
The Furlong men all were blessed or cursed with unique abilities. Ten-year-old James Furlong's father was able to shut off all electricity around him when he was scared, and his grandfather went temporarily blind when he thought about sex. James' mother died while giving birth to him, and as he experiments to figure out what his ability is, he unintentionally causes the death of his father and grandmother. Then, when he's sent to a reformatory school and sparks a strange illness that wipes out all the children who bullied him, James flees to a cottage in the woods to live a life of isolation.

This is easily one of the best weeks for DVD releases we've seen in a long while in fact, as I write this, I realize that this post almost works to recap of a lot of the high points of last years cinematic offerings. So, I suggest you grab a coffee and take a few minutes to just digest all the great titles, read some of our past reviews, and look at some trailers before you take a trip through any of the amazon links and start browsing.
First and foremost, we've got Fernando Meirelles' somewhat controversial adaptation of Blindness (review) hitting store shelves. Many people Loved this film ,and in a lot of ways I really like it as well. It certainly pulls no punches and all the actors are amazing (particularly Julian Moore) but there was still something about the movie that felt unfinished and small (not "intimate" mind you,...

If you click right here you can check out four clips from Dorothy Mills, a film Dimension Films will release here in the States sometime in the near future. In the film, Jane Morton, a psychiatrist in mourning after the accidental death of her son, is assigned the case of Dorothy Mills, a 15-year-old girl from a small Irish island, accused of attempting to murder a baby in her charge. Arriving at the village, Jane discovers a small, frightened community, troubled by mysterious events and haunted by a terrible shared secret and hostile to outsiders. Deeply religious, and believed by the villagers to possess supernatural powers, the terrified Dorothy swears she never touched the child. Moved by the girl's fragile, vulnerable state, Jane makes a diagnosis of multiple personality disorder, until the day that Dorothy speaks to her with the voice of her dead son.
