A Journal for Jordan

Denzel Washington Told Michael B. Jordan Staying Off Social Media Gives Bigger Box Office Audience Returns
Image
Michael B. Jordan may have a decade-long creative partnership with Ryan Coogler, but it’s another one of Jordan’s past directors who has influenced his relationship to fans the most: Denzel Washington.

Washington directed Jordan in 2021 film “A Journal for Jordan.” According to “Sinners” actor Jordan, Washington imparted wisdom about how to navigate fame in the social media era. Washington advised Jordan to stay offline as a way to entice audiences to go to theaters, telling Jordan, “Why would they pay to see you on a weekend if they see you all week for free?”

Jordan told Vulture the story, adding that between his hectic shooting schedule — Jordan is set to direct, produce, and star in “The Thomas Crown Affair” remake as well as “I Am Legend 2” — he hasn’t “really been out in the world” anyway.

Jordan did, however, anticipate his own personal desire to document his...

Denzel Washington Warned Michael B. Jordan That Overexposure Hurts Movie Stars: ‘Why Pay to See You on a Weekend if They See You All Week for Free?’
Image
Michael B. Jordan once again proved his star power with the release of Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners” earlier this year. The vampire thriller has earned $350 million and counting at the worldwide box office. Jordan said in a New York Magazine cover story that he actively does not post much on social media or talk to the press about his personal life in order to “create a demand” for himself as a movie star. Given the money coming in for “Sinners,” it’s a strategy that appears to be working.

Jordan, who counts Denzel Washington as one of his biggest inspirations, shared with the magazine that Washington actually gave him career advice encouraging him to stay offline as to not risk being overexposed. Washington put things bluntly by asking Jordan: “Why would they pay to see you on a weekend if they see you all week for free?”

Michael B. Jordan Overtakes a Batman, a Blade Runner, and a Bond as Career Box Office Passes Major Milestone
Image
Hot off the success of Sinners, star Michael B. Jordan is quickly establishing himself as a bankable leading man. Jordan has been around for a while, but he truly broke out a little over a decade ago, after starring in the subversive superhero film Chronicle, and headlining director Ryan Coogler's Fruitvale Station. He has appeared in every Coogler film since then, including Sinners, in which he plays a dual role. Thanks to the success that they've experienced together, Jordan has established himself among the highest-grossing lead actors in domestic box office history. He recently overtook a bunch of prominent names as he made his way towards the top 100.

Jordan's films have grossed a combined total of nearly $1.5 billion at the domestic box office, with Sinners contributing almost $220 million of that total. Jordan's biggest film remains Black Panther, which made $700 million domestically in 2018. He played the primary antagonist, Killmonger, in that Marvel blockbuster.

MCU Director Details Receiving an Apology From Oscar Winner Denzel Washington: “Did I say too much?”
Image
The MCU has had several updates in the last few weeks, with announcements about Avengers: Doomsday and Spider-Man: Brand New Day coming in at CinemaCon. However, there has been no official announcement yet about the upcoming Black Panther 3, which is set to have Denzel Washington in a pivotal role.

The news was first revealed by the Training Day star himself during the press tour for Gladiator II. However, Washington also reportedly called up director Ryan Coogler, who is confirmed to return to the third film, and apologized for revealing too much. Coogler said that he was blessed to just have him on board.

‘The Piano Lesson’: Read The Screenplay That Found The Right Key For August Wilson’s Pulitzer-Winning Play
Image
Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the scripts behind the awards season’s buzziest movies continues with Netflix’s The Piano Lesson, the adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning August Wilson play that was directed by Malcolm Washington in his feature-helming debut. Washington co-wrote the script with Virgil Williams, the Oscar-nominated so-screenwriter of 2017’s Mudbound.

The film, which features a stellar ensemble including Samuel L. Jackson, John David Washington, Ray Fisher, Michael Potts, Erykah Badu, Danielle Deadwyler and Corey Hawkins, had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival. It hit theaters in early November and began streaming on Netflix on November 22, and has since picked up a Best First Feature Spirit Awards nomination for Malcolm Washington and several supporting actress noms for Deadwyler.

Malcolm and Williams teamed to work on the script to get to the root of Wilson’s play, the latest in the playwright’s Century Cycle series to be adapted to the screen.

In Piano Lesson, the story is set in the 1930s and revolves around the Charles family’s prized heirloom piano. One brother (John David Washington) plans to build the family fortune by selling it, while one sister (Deadwyler) will go to any lengths to hold onto the sole vestige of the family’s heritage. Their uncle (Jackson) tries to mediate, but even he can’t hold back the ghosts of the past.

Deadline Related Video:

“Every family has a history, stories from the past that inform the present; an origin story,” Malcolm Washington says. “Ultimately this story is much bigger than me and my family — it, like the Black American experience, is an inter-connected web of stories that span space and time.”

In addition to Mudbound, Williams, the longtime Criminal Minds writer-producer, previously teamed with Denzel Washington, co-writing the Washington-directed 2021 drama A Journal For Jordan starring Michael B. Jordan and Chanté Adams.

How ‘The Piano Lesson’ Builds on Denzel and Pauletta Washington’s Family Legacy With Malcolm, John David and Katia Washington Taking the Lead
Image
It’s been a big weekend for the Washington family.

While patriarch Denzel Washington chewed the scenery on multiplex screens in “Gladiator II,” the next generation of Washingtons stormed onto streaming with the film adaptation of August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize winner “The Piano Lesson.” With the Netflix film, Denzel and Pauletta Washington’s kids — director Malcolm, actor John David and producer Katia — add to both their family mythos and Wilson’s legacy.

“We’re standing on the shoulders of the Wilsonians,” John David Washington told Variety at the film’s Los Angeles premiere on Nov. 19, listing artists who’ve appeared in Wilson’s works on stage and screen, including his father, Viola Davis, Samuel L. Jackson, Latanya Richardson Jackson, Stephen McKinley Henderson and Charles Dutton.

“They showed us how to do it,” he said. “Hopefully the younger generation will be inspired by what’s possible with these words.”

The Best Movie Denzel Washington Has Ever Directed According To Rotten Tomatoes
Image
Once you've conquered Hollywood by becoming one of the most respected and celebrated actors in the industry, what else is there to do but become a celebrated director, too? That's exactly what Denzel Washington did. Having received his first Oscar nomination for playing South African activist Steve Biko in Richard Attenborough's 1987 effort "Cry Freedom", Denzel then went on to win the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in what Rotten Tomatoes maintains is Washington's best film, 1989's "Glory."

While "Glory," which currently has a 95% Rt score, was certainly a high point for Denzel, the man still had decades of hits and critically-acclaimed classics ahead of him. After that 1989 triumph, for example, he went on to earn another Oscar for his role as corrupt LAPD detective Alonzo Harris in 2001's "Training Day." But between winning Hollywood's highest honor twice, Washington was also proving his ability to...

Denzel Washington Hints At Retirement After Ridley Scott’s ‘Gladiator II’: “Very Few Films Left”
Image
As Denzel Washington continues to flirt with onscreen retirement, an old friend recently got him to serve at least one more performance.

The Academy Award winner said he was “tremendously inspired” by director Ridley Scott‘s upcoming sequel Gladiator II, which premieres Nov. 22 in theaters, while hinting that he’s nearing the end of his acting career.

“There are very few films left for me to make that I’m interested in, and I have to be inspired by the filmmaker, and I was tremendously inspired by Ridley,” he told Empire after last working with Scott on 2007’s American Gangster.

“We had a great go-round the first go-round and here we are. He’s engaged. He’s excited about life and his next film. He’s an inspiration,” added Washington. “We should all want to feel like that at 86.”

Scott said the long-awaited sequel to his Oscar-winning 2000 movie is “the...

Denzel Washington Directed the Best Episode of Greys Anatomy
Image
Quick Links What Is Grey's Anatomy About? What Happens in The Sound of Silence? Praise for The Sound of Silence Pompeo and Washington's On-Set Feud

Although Denzel Washington is arguably the greatest living actor, far fewer people know his directorial acumen. In addition to directing four feature films over two decades, including Antwoine Fisher, The Great Debaters, Fences, and A Journal for Jordan, even fewer people know that Washington directed a single episode of the long-running medical drama Grey's Anatomy. And not just any episode, "The Sound of Silence" is often considered among the most compelling chapters in Grey's Anatomy history.

While Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) witnessed a touching send-off to cap Season 20, it has been reported that Pompeo will return for at least seven of the 18 slated episodes for Season 24. With the 21st season of Grey's Anatomy fast approaching its ABC release on September 26, 2024, reliving one of Pompeo's...

This Denzel Washington Movie With 55% On Rt Is The Only One In The Last 10 Years Critics & Audiences Agree Was "Rotten"
Image
Denzel Washington's 2017 film Roman J. Israel, Esq. is his only movie from the past decade to receive "rotten" scores from both critics and audiences. The film's issues lie in its plotting and pacing, not Washington's performance, which was praised. Despite the negative reception, Washington's performance earned him an Oscar nomination, highlighting his ability to deliver impressive performances regardless of a movie's outcome.

Denzel Washington usually has critics and/or audiences on his side when he stars in a new movie, but he made one film back in 2017 that both critics and audiences agreed was rotten. Washington is both one of the most bankable A-list stars in Hollywood and one of the most highly acclaimed actors working today. Throughout his career, Washingtons versatile performances have earned him two Academy Awards, two Golden Globes, a Tony Award, the Cecil B. DeMille Award, and the AFI Life Achievement Award. Denzel Washington's Underrated 1998 Movie With 40% On Rt Broke A Major Career Trend (& He Hasn't Done It Since)
Image
Despite many hits, Denzel Washington faced flops like 1995's Devil In A Blue Dress and 2021's A Journal for Jordan. Fallen is Washington's only horror film, a dark thriller that failed at the box office but became a cult classic. Washington avoided early career horror roles unlike his A-list peers, with Fallen's failure likely dissuading him from horror.

While Denzel Washingtons career has lasted over 40 years, the actor has only ventured into a certain genre once and his lone effort was a financial and critical failure. Denzel Washington is one of the most acclaimed actors of his generation. As a result, it is easy to forget that the star has weathered his fair share of flops during his illustrious screen career. 1995s Devil In A Blue Dress underperformed, while Washington directed the 2021 flop A Journal for Jordan, which lost over $15 million upon release. Denzel Washington's $6.7 Million Romance Movie Is The Biggest Flop He Didn't Star In
Image
Denzel Washington's directorial career has seen a mix of successes and failures, with A Journal For Jordan being his biggest box office flop. Despite critical acclaim for earlier films like "Fences," A Journal For Jordan failed to find an audience and earned only $6.7 million. Factors like bad reviews, Jordan's action movie reputation, and a predictable plot contributed to the movie's underperformance.

Although Denzel Washingtons impressive career included a number of movies that under-performed, his biggest recent failure wasnt one of the stars acting roles. As surprising as it might seem, the deservedly acclaimed Denzel Washington has a long history of movies that underperformed financially. His movie debut, 1981s Carbon Copy, failed to meet expectations, while one of Denzel Washingtons best movies lost over $20 million at the box office when Fallen was released in 1998. Despite the failures, Washingtons generational talent ensures that the actors reputation has never taken a hit.

Michael B. Jordan's Under-The-Radar 2021 Movie Praised For "On Point" War Scene By Expert
Image
An expert praises A Journal for Jordan's war scene accuracy, giving the film a 7/10 for its depiction of Iraq War realities. Roadside Ied placement in Iraq is discussed, with details on their evolution and triggering techniques explained. The film's underwhelming reception proved disappointing given Michael B. Jordan and Denzel Washington's involvement.

Michael B. Jordan's under-the-radar 2021 movie is praised for its on-point war scene by an Iraq War veteran and expert. Denzel Washington took on directorial duties for Jordan’s drama, based on the true story of a soldier deployed in Iraq who keeps a journal for his infant son. The film made little impression when it was released, despite Jordan and Washington’s involvement, grossing just $6.7 million on a budget of $25 million.

A Journal for Jordan may indeed have largely escaped notice when it came out back in 2021, but at least one expert thinks the film did a...

Denzel Washington says he’s done with directing
Spike Lee
According to Spike Lee, Denzel Washington isn’t planning to add to the four films that he’s already directed.

Whilst Denzel Washington continues to be one of Hollywood’s most enduring icons as a movie star, he may well be done as a director.

Despite helming four films (with one of them receiving a Best Picture Oscar nod: that’d be Fences), Washington is reportedly finished with directing. That news comes from Spike Lee, who revealed Washington’s decision during a Variety interview with Bradley Cooper.

Spike Lee and Denzel Washington have been friends and collaborators for a long time, so there’s no reason to doubt Lee’s comments. Assuming that Washington is finished, it would certainly be a shame for him to exit directing, given that he’s proven himself really rather decent at it.

As it stands, Denzel Washington’s directorial filmography includes The Great Debaters,...

Denzel Washington to Play Hannibal in Antoine Fuqua's Next Film for Netflix
Image
Denzel Washington and Antoine Fuqua, who have previously collaborated on successful films, will team up again for an upcoming Netflix project. The film will feature Washington playing the role of Hannibal, the Carthaginian general known for leading battles against the Roman Republic. Washington is also set to join the cast of the sequel to Gladiator, with Ridley Scott directing, alongside a talented ensemble.

Antoine Fuqua and one of his favorite actors, Academy Award-winner, Denzel Washington will team-up once again for the director's next big project for Netflix.

Now that the actors' strike has finally come to an end after 118 days and weeks of negotiation between SAG-AFTRA and AMPTP, several of the films and series that were on hiatus are beginning to reveal news regarding their casts and filming. Fuqua's next movie is one of them. A few months after the premiere of his latest title, The Equalizer 3, the acclaimed...

Box Office Update: The Equalizer 3 punching its way to second best Labor Day debut
Image
Denzel Washington once again proves his movie star status as his Equalizer 3 is currently looking at a solid $35-$37 million weekend, with around $43 million 4-day take, which falls perfectly in line with our predictions from Thursday. That number will put it squarely in the number two spot for the Labor Day holiday, pulling ahead of Rob Zombie’s 2007 remake of Halloween which opened with $30.5 million and behind Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ $94.6 million in 2021.

The thing I didn’t realize going in to this weekend is that this is the first fully theatrical movie Denzel has starred in since the last Equalizer film hit theaters in 2018. He would take time to star in The Iceman Cometh on Broadway for which he would earn rave reviews and a Tony Nomination. In 2021 Washington had three movies released: The Little Things, which is an excellent throwback thriller starring Washington,...

A Potential Equalizer 4 Would Depend On One Thing And One Thing Only
Image
"The Equalizer" has been a sturdy franchise for Sony over the last decade. Based on the 1980s CBS series starring Edward Woodward, the films are a model of narrative simplicity: Denzel Washington plays Robert McCall, a world-weary yet principled ex-CIA operative who bounces around the globe to help powerless people overcome viciously corrupt criminals. They're self-contained vigilante yarns powered exclusively by one of Hollywood's most magnetic stars in full-on badass mode. Aside from their extrajudicial nature, they're basically Charles Bronson's "Death Wish" movies absent the racism and wretched treatment of women.

As such, they're utterly critic-proof, and Washington, a two-time Oscar winner who's widely considered to be one of our finest actors, shows no compunction about playing to the cheap seats. He knows audiences dig him in this kind of badass role, and, thus far, he's been proven right at the box office. The first two films (barely...

Michael B. Jordan's Best Movies Ranked
Image
First appearing in an episode of The Sopranos, Michael B. Jordan has been appearing in blockbuster and highly acclaimed films since 2001. It takes a special kind of talent to have the physical ability to lead a sports franchise and the quiet introspection to play in serious dramas, but Jordan pulls it off. His success has been in part thanks to his partnership with another young star, Ryan Coogler, who has directed Jordan in four different films. Jordan used early dramatic film roles to launch himself as one of the preeminent franchise stars in Hollywood.

Jordan’s most critically acclaimed movies have seen the young actor playing protagonists, as well as antagonists. His parts, even when they’re more minuscule, have always had an attitude that makes his characters exciting and surprising to watch. He manages to be both off-putting in his self-confidence and sympathetic at the same time. It’s...

Why the Creators of ‘A League of Their Own’ Wanted to ‘Rob the Bank’ for Season 1
Image
There may be no crying in baseball, but there were tears all throughout the world premiere of Prime Video’s “A League of Their Own.”

Co-created and executive-produced by Abbi Jacobson (“Broad City”) and Will Graham (“Mozart in the Jungle”), “A League of Their Own” debuted at Tribeca 2022 on June 13. The TV reimagining of Penny Marshall’s beloved 1992 film of the same name was a “labor of love that has taken most of our adult lives,” Jacobson joked while introducing the pilot episode, which premieres on Prime Video August 12.

“We had a chance to talk to Penny before she passed away,” Graham explained. “She told us these stories changed her life and it will for you too. As much as we love the movie, it’s really the stories underneath it, including the ones of queer women, of women of color, those ones that didn’t make it into the 1992 film.

Image
Exclusive: Euphoria and White Lotus star Sydney Sweeney is starring in Tina Satter’s debut feature about whistleblower Reality Winner.

She’ll play Winner in a cast that features Josh Hamilton and Marchánt Davis.

Winner was a former American intelligence specialist. She was given the longest sentence ever for the unauthorized release of government information to the media for leaking an intelligence report about Russian interference in the 2016 United States elections via an email phishing operation.

On June 3, 2017, while employed by the military contractor Pluribus International Corporation, Winner was arrested on suspicion of leaking an intelligence report about Russian meddling in the 2016 election from the National Security Agency to news website The Intercept.

The project is inspired by Satter’s acclaimed play Is This A Room, which had a critically lauded Broadway run last fall. The script was...

Pulling Double Duty On The Great Debaters Was Never Denzel Washington's Plan
Denzel Washington
Denzel Washington received his 10th Academy Award nomination for his performance in "The Tragedy of Macbeth." The performance received widespread acclaim from a major director in Joel Coen taking quite a big pivot from his usual work. Entering his late 60s, Washington keeps showing us new, exciting things on screen that prove why he was one of our finest living actors.

Did you know Washington also directed a movie that came out in 2021? And that it starred Michael B. Jordan? Based on the film's paltry box office receipts, not many of you did. I saw "A Journal for Jordan." It was ... fine. The...

A Journal for Jordan (2021)
Michael B. Jordan Learned An Important Lesson From Denzel Washington's Directing
A Journal for Jordan (2021)
"A Journal For Jordan" united two of the most prominent Black actors working today: Michael B. Jordan and Denzel Washington. Jordan stars in the film as First Sgt. Charles Monroe King, who writes the titular journal as a guide for his infant son Jordan. Washington directs and, in a career first, chooses to stay behind the camera rather than casting himself in a role. And while "A Journal for Jordan" itself was less than well-received critically, Jordan took more from the film than just warm memories; he also described the experience of working with Washington as a "master class" in acting and filmmaking.

Entertainment Weekly held an...

Female Cinematographers Make Strides Onscreen as Guilds, Educators Work to Boost Numbers
Image
In 1997, UCLA cinematography professor William McDonald was home with his newborn daughter. As he looked into her eyes in his sleep-deprived state he began to wonder what her life would be like if she grew up and wanted to become a cinematographer. Would she have the same opportunities as men who wanted to study cinematography? Would she be able to find work after getting a degree and experience?

At the time, female cinematography students were few and far between. Things looked similarly bleak for working female DPs during that period. McDonald thought that could change if more women had the opportunity to study and train in the field, so he set a goal of admitting 50% female students into cinematography studies each year.

“The simple premise is that if you make a generational commitment — and about 25 to 30 years is a generational commitment — to flooding the market with exceedingly talented people from...

After 15 years, Will Smith is ready to revisit the postapocalyptic ruins of New York City in an "I Am Legend" sequel, but he's not facing the zombie-vampires alone. Smith has enlisted the help of "Black Panther" star, Michael B. Jordan, to create the follow-up film, according to Deadline. As part of their first collaboration, Smith and Jordan will produce and star in the upcoming feature. "Gonna be good," Smith captioned a screengrab from the film on Instagram on March 4.

The movie will be written and produced by Oscar-winning screenwriter Akiva Goldsman, who is responsible for adapting Richard Matheson's postapocalyptic horror novel, "I Am Legend" (1954) into the 2007 film. Following its initial release in 2007, "I Am Legend" opened with $77,200,000 in box office sales and eventually raked in $585,400,000 worldwide.

As of now, the sequel does not have a dedicated director or a set release date.

Meanwhile, Tyler Perry’s blockbuster Madea franchise moved to Netflix in one of the streamer’s most significant franchise acquisitions, with “A Madea Homecoming” immediately taking the top position.

‘Snowfall’: Damson Idris On What He Learned From John Singleton; Wants Denzel Washington For Season 6
Image
Damson Idris reflected on his early days working on FX’s Snowfall, and the words of inspiration he received from series creator John Singleton. Singleton died in 2019 at the age of 51.

“In essence, that symbol implanted in me was to just be truthful,” Idris said during the show’s Ctam panel on Thursday. “To just stay true to the story, true to the people of the times, and really respect this time. We often talk about the bad that came out of this time, but there’s so much good that came out of it too. It had a huge impact on pop culture, fashion, music, and that’s what the show shines a lens on.”

He continued, “Singleton would always say, ‘Everyone that you meet on the way up you’re going to meet on the way down.’ So I’d say the seed was actually making me a leader.
