The indie from director Mary Darling and WestWind Pictures will see Azizi play Farhad Khosrovi, a Tehran bookstore owner whose daughter Utab (Parmiss Sehat) attends a secret university aligned with the Iranian Bahá’í spiritualist faith.

With a romance between a Muslim and a member of the Bahá’í faith opposed by both of their families, their relationship is also tested when Utab learns Sasan has plans to go to Germany and she is arrested, imprisoned and tortured for being a Baha’i.

We now know that Peter Capaldi will play the twelfth Doctor. Capaldi is a familiar face if you’re a fan of The Thick of It, Skins or The Hour. He also appeared in Torchwood: Children of Earth as well as the “Fires of Pompeii” episode of Doctor Who. Caputi’s a great actor and it’s hard to complain about his casting. Still, I wish they didn’t joke about the possibility of the Doctor being played by a woman in the lead-up. I’m fine if they’re going to keep casting straight, white, male actors in the role but I wish they wouldn’t pretend they might do something different before doing the same thing.

The fact that Pivot, a new network for millennials, is launching Aug. 1, the date MTV hit television in 1981, is purely coincidental. But here’s something that isn’t: The first thing Pivot will air at 6 a.m. Et on Thursday is a video for “Video Killed the Radio Star.”
You may recall that the Buggles’ video was the first one played on MTV 32 years ago. For its update, which celebrates a new generation’s creative power, Pivot recorded independent artists live all over Los Angeles, including Run River North, Goldspot, London Thor, Far and Away, Musical Mammal and Rainbow Jackson.

(Rns) Mixing religion and entertainment, as NBC has tried to do with its new prime time TV sitcom “Save Me,” starring Anne Heche, can be a tricky business.
Sometimes the combination works spectacularly, marrying a religious base with a significant crossover audience. When the chemistry is right, shows built around faith and divine intervention land in the ratings Top Ten year after year, and earn numerous Emmys.
CBS had mainstream hits with “Highway to Heaven” in the 1980s and “Touched by an Angel” in the late 1990s. The WB/CW’s “7th Heaven” ran for a decade.
At other times, talking-to-God/Jesus/angel dramas — like ABC’s “Nothing Sacred” in the late 1990s, and CBS’s “Joan of Arcadia,” in the mid-2000s — were short-lived.
For some reason, audiences have no problem when God, faith and religion are regular elements of animated comedies such as “The Simpsons,...

Six herds of bison (carrying the expression of a barfly at the end of a very long night), three foxes, two black bears and one wolf with a rabbit in his mouth. This is the account of all animals we saw on our 552-kilometer road trip across the Northwest Territories, looking for Larry Sole. Who is Larry Sole?
To answer that question I must take you back to the late eighties, to a time when Iron Maiden and Van Halen ruled, when the greatness of a man was measured by the vertical feathery grandness of his hair, and seizure-inducing magenta was the colour of everything. In this questionable moment in history, a gorgeous man named Richard Van Camp -- in the minus inhumane cold of Canada's north -- picked up a pen and started writing a novel about a skinny, self-deprecating headbanger named Larry Sole. It became an ode to the burning,...

Zaib Shaikh and Sitara Hewitt, better known to "Little Mosque on the Prairie" fans as their alter egos Amaar Rashid and Rayyan Hamoudi, are reminiscing about their influential little show with a "fond sadness." Even after six seasons, both still seem awestruck by the incredible reception the show has had around the world, racking up humanitarian awards, critical accolades and even an induction into the Museum of Radio and Television in New York City.
The groundbreaking CBC comedy is winding down in its sixth and last season, with the series finale set to air on Monday, April 2. The show has attracted a loyal fan base over the years, both in Canada and beyond. In fact, "Little Mosque" now airs in 83 countries around the world. Not bad for a little show from Canada's public broadcaster.

Eventful week. To play catch-up:
The big news that every site reported in a slightly different way is that Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome will be a digital series and a TV film, but not a TV show, at least not one produced by Syfy/Universal Cable Prods. You have probably read the Deadline article by now.
With the possibility that Universal may still shop B&C around, it doesn't sound like they have any immediate plans to make more of it beyond the existing pilot/web series/Mow.
No word yet on a release date, but Battlestar Wiki reports that we'll be seeing Blood & Chrome as a web series first and then as a TV movie.
Doug Drexler posted this the other day (full post at the link):

This is one of 2 sales for Canadian writer-producer Rob Sheridan in his first stab at development in the U.S. this year. He has another comedy in the works at ABC, from ABC Studios and Courteney Cox and David Arquette’s Coquette Prods., about a formerly overweight young woman coming to grips with her new body while managing a restaurant that specializes in calorie-rich food. Home Game, which was adapted from a series of Slate essays, chronicles Lewis’ triumphs, failures, frustration and exhilaration of being a new father during the first year of each of his three children’s lives. Warner Bros. TV is producing with studio-based Shephard/Robin Co.

Tere Bin Laden
In a film tradition where comedies rarely evolve into satires, Tere Bin Laden (Tbl) signifies a refreshing change. It does what Nato hasn’t been able to do in 9 years; disarm the numero uno terrorist. It strips off Bin Laden’s carefully crafted persona – conjured, in equal measures, by his own video dispatches and the western media - by making him an object of ridicule and laughter. But that’s just one part of it. The other, and more important, bit is its denigration of the American campaign in the Af-Pak region that it tries to legitimise in the name of Bin Laden, a MacGuffin, for all practical purposes.
But before I go any further with the film, I’d like to talk about a bit about a few things that are, in one way or the other, related to Tbl.
If you look at the popular...

Although CBC, a Canadian public TV network, didn't make any announcement, the fifth season of Little Mosque on the Prairie, a sitcom, begins production today in Ontario.
This show follows Amaar Rashid (Zaib Shaikh), a young and "liberal" Muslim imam from Toronto. He decides to go live in a small town of the Canadian Prairies (hello stereotypes!) where a small Muslim community coexists with "white" (if you know what I mean) people. Besides, it appears that the town's mayor (Debra McGrath) and one of her councillors (Sheila McCarthy), are so in favour of Canada's multiculturalism policy, which isn't an immigration policy in case you're too dumb to know.
The show also stars Carlo Rota, Sitara Hewitt, Brandon Firla, Neil Crone, Stephen Lobo and Arlene Duncan.
Finally, it appears that Little Mosque on the Prairie will premiere on CBC this fall.

Toronto -- Canadian screenwriter Rob Sheridan is partnering with Warner Bros. Television to develop a comedy.
The blind pilot script deal will see Toronto-based Sheridan, whose writer, story editor and producer credits include HBO Canada's "Less Than Kind," the CBC's "Little Mosque on the Prairie," and CTV's "Corner Gas," land a six-figure package and move to Los Angeles this summer to start developing a half-hour comedy series.
"Wbtv have produced some of my favorite television comedies and I think together we'll be able to create something special," Sheridan said.
The Canuck comedy scribe's most recent credits include writer and producer on the CBC sitcom "18 to Life," which was originally developed with ABC.
Sheridan, a Canadian Film Center alumni, is repped by William Morris Endeavor Entertainment and Glenn Cockburn at Meridian Artists.

Toronto -- The Canadian Broadcasting Corp. has picked up a sitcom from E1 Television based on the popular Canadian curling movie "Men With Brooms."
The TV adaptation follows an earlier pilot written by Paul Mather ("Corner Gas") about four regular joes who hang out at the local curling rink.
The "Men With Brooms" series, in celebrating Canada's working guy culture, will echo another popular CBC comedy, "Little Mosque on the Prairie," also written in part by Mather.
Canada's public broadcaster also picked up a second half-hour comedy, "Insecurity," from Verite Films and produced by Virginia Thompson.
The "Insecurity" pilot was directed by Robert De Lint.
The CBC also renewed "The Ron James Show" for a second season.

Toronto -- Indie producer marblemedia has jumped on the Canadian brand integration bandwagon.
Toronto-based marblemedia said it has hired Lisa Reis as director of brand integration to work with broadcasters and brands to create seamless programming for multiple platforms.
Marblemedia is developing branded entertainment for "The Dating Guy," an adult animated comedy for cable cartoon channel Teletoon, and a remake of the 1980s classic Canadian TV game show "Just Like Mom," this time titled "Just Like Mom ... and Dad."
The hire follows Canadian broadcasters increasingly adopting sponsorship and brand integration to survive a worsening TV ad slump and embrace new-media platforms.
The Canadian Broadcasting Corp. struck a product placement deal with Td Canada Trust to feature its brand and banking products in three prime time dramas, "Little Mosque on The Prairie," "Being Erica" and "Heartland."
And rival broadcaster Rogers Media last month took a minority stake in Michael Eisner's new-media studio Vuguru.

Toronto -- Talk about TV that taps into the zeitgeist.
"Battle of the Blades," a new reality competition series that has hockey heroes mastering graceful ice dance routines with figure skating champs, has become a ratings winner for the Canadian Broadcasting Corp.
Think Canada, and ice naturally comes to mind. And the CBC has scored as hockey-mad Canadians watch retired NHL greats get schooled in leading and lifting -- and hopefully not dropping -- former Olympic female figure skaters.
No knock on Kristy Swanson and Bruce Jenner, but "Battle of the Blades" exec producer John Brunton insists the CBC series is no "Skating With Celebrities," the 2006 Fox on-ice take of ABC's hit "Dancing With the Stars" series.
Brunton said the Canadian ice dance competition series enlisted athletes who know how to stay steady on their skates.

Toronto -- A day after announcing plans to cut as many as 800 jobs, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. on Thursday said it will cancel "The Simpsons" and "The Martha Stewart Show" in a cost-cutting maneuver.
The pubcaster also said it will lower license fees and order fewer episodes of such popular Canadian TV series as "The Border," "Being Erica," and "Little Mosque on the Prairie" to deal with a growing advertising downturn.
Other savings will come from the cancellation of daytime lifestyle series, a cut in expenditures on daytime kids programming and the end of some sports programming, including Toronto Blue Jays games.
The Cbc also will cut 80 jobs at its Cbc News division.
On the radio side, the public broadcaster will cancel some popular radio shows as well as reduce regional radio noontime shows to one hour and live music recordings by half.

Pay TV checks in with Gemini noms
TORONTO -- Canada's two premium pay TV networks attracted attention and honors Tuesday as their cutting-edge series led all nominees for the Geminis, Canada's TV awards.
"Slings & Arrows," a dark comedy about a dysfunctional theater company, grabbed 14 Gemini nominations, while sci-fi drama ReGenesis followed with 12. Both series air on the Movie Network and Movie Central, the country's two premium pay TV networks.
Slings, which airs stateside on the Sundance Channel, is in its third and final season.
Other multiple nominees in the Gemini hunt include the crime drama Intelligence and the news information series The Fifth Estate. Both of the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. series earned 11 noms.
The CBC miniseries Dragon Boys pulled in nine noms, while rival CTV saw its telefilm Doomstown and comedy Robson Arms grab seven each.
Another CTV comedy, Corner Gas, earned six noms, while hit CBC sitcom Little Mosque on the Prairie surprised by garnering only two noms, in the direction and writing categories.
In the best dramatic actor category, Paul Gross and William Hutt of Slings will challenge John Cassini and Ian Tracey from Intelligence and Peter Outerbridge from ReGenesis.
The best dramatic actress contest will pit Martha Burns and Susan Coyne of Slings against Klea Scott of Intelligence.
Competition for Gemini hardware will be fought across 90 categories over four nights. Trophies in the news, lifestyle and minor drama and comedy categories will be handed out Oct. 15-17 in Toronto, while the more high-profile Geminis will be handed out Oct. 28 on the CBC network during a ceremony from Regina, Saskatchewan.
For the second year running, the CTV network is boycotting the news categories because, according to the network, its "participation in the awards is of little value."...
