Disney’s long-expected move to fold ABC Signature into 20th Television brings to an end the media conglom’s in-house TV studio, which started off as Touchstone Television a decade before Disney bought ABC, subsequently being renamed ABC Studios and more recently ABC Signature.
Launched in 1985, Touchstone TV’s first major hit was Golden Girls, which ran on NBC for seven seasons. Other successful series from that era include Blossom, also for NBC, and Home Improvement, Ellen and Boy Meets World for ABC.
In the first years after ABC became part of Disney, Touchstone Television continued to sell to all networks — which is how 20th Television operated for its entire run at Fox — with shows such as Felicity and Popular for the WB and The PJs for Fox/WB.

Dear fans, please stop yelling “Randall!” at Sterling K. Brown whenever you see him walking down the street. That’s a reference, of course, to the actor’s Emmy-winning role as Randall Pearson on the hit NBC drama “This Is Us,” which ran for six seasons.
“It’s funny, people would be like, ‘Yo Randall!,” he tells Variety. “And now they’re like, ‘Is Randall on ‘Solar Opposites?’ It’s ‘Sterling,’ God dang it! Listen, I never want people to not know that I played the character. But if and when I reach the point where people stop yelling ‘Randall!’ it would be Ok. Because it’s not my name. It’s Sterling. And to be seen for a body, instead of a character, feels way better.”
On this episode of the Variety Awards Circuit Podcast, Brown discusses his role as a gay surgeon in Cord Jefferson’s satirical film “American Fiction,...

Crazy Legs Features has nabbed film rights to The Most Beautiful: My Life with Prince, the bestseller from Mayte Garcia, chronicling her romance with the iconic musical artist, for development as a scripted biopic. With the WGA strike in the rearview mirror, the company is now in search of a writer to pen the adaptation.
The first wife of the superstar born Prince Rogers Nelson, Mayte’s bestseller offers a perspective on Prince through their intensely personal relationship that shows a depth and nuance never revealed of the famously private and beloved artist. The book’s title is inspired by the hit song Prince wrote about their legendary love story that started backstage at a concert. What began as a friendship between two artists blossomed into a romance, thrived as a fairytale from their wedding day, and then struggled due to the devastating losses that ultimately ended their marriage in 2000. Peacock’s Bel-Air is nearly matching the number of seasons with its showrunners.
The NBCUniversal-backed streamer has handed out a third-season renewal for its reimagining of Will Smith’s beloved The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. The dramatic take on the former comedy series that is inspired by Morgan Cooper’s viral short was originally picked up at Peacock with a two-season order following a competitive bidding process with other streamers vying for the series.
The season three renewal marks its first vote of confidence beyond that initial order and follows a wave of showrunner changes as the drama struggled to find its creative voice. Carla Banks Waddles was recruited as showrunner at the start of season two. The Good Girls and The Soul Man alum was promoted from co-exec producer to showrunner and replaced T.J. Brady and Rasheed Newson (Army Wives, Lie to Me) at the helm of Bel-Air.

The NBC drama pilot “Found” has cast Kelli Williams, Variety has learned exclusively.
Williams joins previously announced series lead Shanola Hampton in the project along with fellow cast member Mark-Paul Gosselaar.
The show is built around the fact that, in any given year, more than 600,000 people are reported missing in the U.S. More than half that number are people of color that the country seems to forget about. Public relations specialist Gabi Mosley (Hampton) — who was once herself one of those forgotten ones — and her crisis management team now make sure there is always someone looking out for the forgotten missing people. But unbeknownst to anyone, this everyday hero is hiding a chilling secret of her own.
Williams will star in the pilot as Margaret Reed. A keen observer of human behavior, Margaret is a crisis manager at Mosley and Associates, and the mother figure to her whole team of associates.
