The Paramount co-ceo threesome of Chris McCarthy, George Cheeks and Brian Robbins is apt to look quite different once the Skydance-Paramount merger goes through in late March-early April, according to sources and not surprisingly. However, we hear that no decisions have been made on the comings and goings of McCarthy, Cheeks and Robbins.
A Bloomberg article Tuesday reported that of the three, only Cheeks is bound to survive once incoming CEO and Paramount buyer David Ellison arrives. This in addition to further consolidation of the conglom’s TV assets.
Those familiar with the Skydance-Paramount merger tell us that Ellison has yet to have talks with McCarthy and Robbins about their futures under the new merger.
Chatter indicates that Cheeks looked well positioned to stay on as he oversees CBS, the division that has the least overlap with Skydance and one that has been doing well. The broadcast network added new hits this year including Tracker,...

Our own reviewer Alex Maidy wasn’t very impressed by the Apple TV+ thriller series Surface – you can read his 5/10 review at This Link – but Apple TV+ went ahead and ordered a second season of the show… and now Deadline has revealed that Surface season 2 has been given a premiere date of Friday, February 21st. The new season will consist of eight episodes, released on a weekly basis through April 11th. A batch of first look images have also been unveiled. One can be seen at the top of this article, and there are two more at the bottom.
Surface season 2 will see Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who is also an executive producer on the series, reprising the role of Sophie, a woman who has extreme memory loss after a traumatic head injury. In the first season, set in San Francisco, Sophie seeks to rediscover herself, unearthing sins ranging from an affair...

Every great TV character has a past — some we’ve seen in flashbacks or stories told in passing, others remain tantalizing mysteries.
That’s why the idea behind NCIS: Origins is so irresistible. Getting to see a young Leroy Jethro Gibbs in action and figuring out who he was before becoming the leader we know is a fan’s dream come true.
And with the upcoming Dexter: Original Sin set to explore how a young Dexter Morgan became a serial killer, it’s clear that TV is embracing the allure of origin stories.
(Photo: Sonja Flemming/CBS)
It makes us wonder: What if other TV legends got the same treatment? From bold leaders to unpredictable renegades, there are so many characters whose early days could be just as compelling.
What shaped them? Who were they before their defining moments? Did they always follow the same moral code, or did they stumble along the way?...

Despite shows like The Bear and Succession making the cut, the decline of entertainment is evident. Streaming has put an end to the reign of television, and Breaking Bad perhaps stands as one of the last original series to have come out of a network studio. In such desperate times, when every project lives under the threat of being scrapped or canceled on a whim, do we really need another reminder of the gross blunder committed by Game of Thrones?

Since the advent of modern television, shows have faced controversy and backlash due to their bad endings. How I Met Your Mother, Lost, Dexter, The X-Files, and Ozark remain etched in the halls of TV history for their horrifically bad, non-committal, or poorly scripted finales. By the look of things, Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone may be spiraling down the same path.

The final countdown of 2024 is here! It's time to take a look at what television shows will be premiering on Paramount Plus for December. Frankly, our list is quite short. This time we only have two television shows to discuss from vastly different ends of the genre spectrum.
Where one is lighthearted, uplifting, and inspirational, the other tells the beginning of an 8-season story that is far from pleasant but perhaps some can argue it is justifiable. Let's begin!
as1one: The Israeli-Palestinian Pop Music Journey
First on our list is the docuseries as1one: The Israeli-Palestinian Pop Music Journey premiering on December 3. For those who don't know, as1one is the world's first Israeli and Palestinian pop group, comprised of six members: Nadav Philips, Niv Lin, Aseel Farah, Ohad Attia, Sadik Dogosh, and Neta Rozenblat.
The docuseries will document their bond and shared passion for music, as they rise...

We'd been led to believe that Dexter Morgan's story reached a definitive end when the serial killer was gunned down by his son in Dexter: New Blood. However, a newly released trailer for the upcoming prequel series, Dexter: Original Sin, reveals that he at least makes it to the hospital.
With that, it appears we're one step closer to another sequel series; remember, original plans called for a spin-off revolving around Harrison Morgan before Showtime's attention shifted to exploring Dexter's early years.
Patrick Gibson takes over as the title character to explore Dexter's origin story, though Michael C. Hall will be on hand as narrator and his most famous role's "inner voice." This trailer also points to us picking up with Dexter in the present day.

Dexter: Original Sin Trailer Sees Michael C. Hall Chart The Making Of A Killer In New Prequel Series
Three years after Michael C. Hall's Dexter Morgan was iced (quite literally) at the end of Dexter: New Blood, the Bay Harbor Butcher is back back back baby — with a fresh face and a familiar inner voice. That's right, folks, Dexter: Original Sin (aka Young Dexter) is headed for Paramount+ on Friday 13 December, and the streamer has just dropped our first proper look at Patrick Gibson in the role of a student era Dexter as the soon-to-be-serial-killer picks up the tricks of the blood spilling trade and establishes his Code. With Michael C. Hall providing ice-cold inner monologues, Christian Slater as the inspired pick to play Dexter's father/mentor in murder Harry, and a special guest appearance from one Sarah Michelle Gellar, it's a doozy! Check out the trailer below:

You may notice that the trailer for Dexter: Original Sin begins with the final moments of Dexter: New Blood, which found the serial killer seemingly meeting his end and bleeding out in the snow. However, the trailer adds a few more moments to that scene, with Dexter (Michael C. Hall) now being rushed to the hospital as doctors attempt to revive him. It’s this “life flashing before your eyes” moment which seems to set the stage for the prequel series. It may...

It may be a toss-up just exactly how many fans are on board for the upcoming “Dexter” prequel series “Dexter: Original Sin.” However, one person who’s most definitely excited is original star Michael C. Hall, as he expressed recently in an interview with EW.
“The scripts they’ve executed are fantastic…I can’t wait, like as a fan, to watch it, and as an actor, to spend time seeing real footage of things that I’ve sort of tried to imagine for myself when I imagine what Dexter’s early days [were like], now I’m going to have this technicolor version of his memories to refer to.

In the beginning, there was blood.
That’s the line from the first trailer of “Dexter: Original Sin” during which a forensics student transforms into the serial killer we know and love from the popular Showtime series “Dexter.”
Patrick GIbson stars as Young Dexter in this prequel series coming to Paramount+ with Showtime next month, the origin story of how Gibson becomes Michael C. Hall’s Dexter Morgan.
The trailer for the 10-episode series shows Hall’s Dexter lying on his death bed with his life flashing before his eyes, revealing a colorful Miami and how Dexter’s father, played by Christian Slater, coaxes him into a life of homicide, killing only the bad guys and making sure he never gets caught.
Here’s the official logline: “Set in 1991 Miami, ‘Dexter: Original Sin’ follows Dexter (Patrick Gibson) as he transitions from student to avenging serial killer. When his bloodthirsty urges...

“Dexter” star Michael C. Hall is lending his iconic voice to upcoming prequel series “Dexter: Original Sin.”
In the trailer for “Dexter: Original Sin,” Hall voices the murderous inner monologue of young Dexter Morgan (Patrick Gibson), who follows the guidance of his father, Harry (Christian Slater), as he begins his quest to find and kill those who deserve to be eliminated from society.
“In the beginning, there was blood, and a code I learned from my father,” Hall’s Dexter says in the trailer. “It was simple: kill the bad guys who escaped justice and don’t get caught myself.”
“Trust me, you stay the course and you’ll be fine,” Slater’s Harry tells Dexter, while Molly Brown’s Deb Morgan quips, “Well Dex, homicide looks good on you.”
For some ease in his challenge, Dexter gets a job that brings the blood to him in a forensics internship...

When Patrick Gibson was auditioning to star in Dexter: Original Sin, there were a few items that never came up but probably should have. The first was his comfort level with the sight of blood; the series is a prequel to the Emmy-winning mid-aughts dark comedy about an avenging serial killer, to which gore, however tastefully done, is integral. The second was the matter of The Wig. The prequel’s timeline directly coincides with the original’s infamous flashback to Dexter’s first kill, during which Michael C. Hall dons a hairpiece not dissimilar to that of Lord Farquaad’s (plus, it’s stringy) — Gibson, as his fans well know, has a signature look of blond curls.
Luckily for all involved, Gibson, the 29-year-old Ireland-born actor who broke big in The Oa and starred in The Darkest Minds and Shadow & Bone, is a very cool customer. He’s not at all squeamish,...

Christmas just doesn’t feel the same now that none of us will be forced to watch the most unhinged holiday special ever to air thousands of times.
Millennials and Gen Xers will likely agree that, for all the benefits that the age of streaming has brought to our lives, both during the holiday season and year-round, kids these days are missing out on the simple pleasures of flipping through the channels during late fall to early winter in search of a holiday-themed episode of one of their favorite cartoons, only to settle for whatever colorful festive fair was available. And, since kids’ channels couldn’t simply air Frosty the Snowman, A Charlie Brown Christmas and The Fairly OddParents Christmas special on repeat 24/7 between Halloween and Christmas, the networks, too, had to settle for some second, third and fourth choices for festive programming.
Enter Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer,...

Exclusive: In a competitive situation, 20th Century Studios has won rights to Test Drive, an original action spec from Matt Venne, to be produced by Safehouse Pictures.
While plot details are under wraps, sources said Venne secured a healthy mid-six against seven figure deal for his script. The spec had no talent or director attachments and caused a stir on the back of its concept and writing alone, in a scenario not too commonly seen these days.
Director of Development of Safehouse, Austin Bowman, found the spec. We’re told Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell will produce.
Currently staffing on Showtime’s Dexter spin-off series Dexter: Resurrection, Venne is a prolific genre writer who previously adapted Stephen King’s Bag of Bones as a limited series for A&e. He sold his series Cruel Summer, based on the same-name novel, to Legendary TV, with David Goyer boarding to produce, and also...

The second season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power opened to big viewing numbers in the United States — just not as big as its first season.
The Prime Video series amassed 1.02 billion minutes of viewing in the United States for the week of Aug. 26-Sept. 1, good for first place among original series and second among all titles in Nielsen’s streaming rankings. While there are other star-studded names on the list as well, Benedict Cumberbatch’s all-time best performance as the fan-favorite Sherlock Holmes in BBC’s critically and generally commended Sherlock continues to be regarded among the best crime series.

And yet, that’s the mere beginning of the list. Even though fans are still madly in love with the mysteriously immersive element of this respective show, multiple other additions to the genre are putting up tough competition to the British mystery crime saga established by Cumberbatch. If anything, the 7 crime TV shows mentioned in this list might as well be considered as good as Sherlock, if not better.

Paramount+’s communication team has been hit by Paramount Global’s latest round of layoffs as part of its 15% reduction of its U.S. workforce. Senior vice presidents Morgan Seal and Amanda Cary are among those impacted, TheWrap has learned.
During Seal’s 13-year tenure, she helped lead publicity for the streamer’s Taylor Sheridan and Star Trek universe shows. She joined CBS Interactive’s comms team in 2011 before transitioning to the Paramount+ team in 2019.
Cary joined Showtime in 2013 and was promoted to SVP in 2022. There, she worked on publicity for series such as “Dexter” and “Yellowjackets,” before moving to Paramount+ last year. Prior to working with Showtime, she spent five years at USA Network, helping to launch series that included blue-sky classics “Suits” and “Covert Affairs.”

Updated with more info: We had been hearing for weeks that Paramount+, which was spared in the first wave of Paramount Global’s ongoing layoffs last month, would take the brunt of cuts in the second round. That has been happening today, with entire departments eliminated as Paramount+ faces an uncertain future ahead of Paramount Global’s acquisition by Skydance.
One of the units that essentially is being dissolved is Paramount+’s communications operation, with SVPs Morgan Seal, Amanda Cary and Deva Kehoe among those impacted. The move was foreshadowed last week by the departure of Erin Calhoun, who oversaw the department as EVP, Head of Communications, Paramount Streaming & Showtime and Cross-Company Publicity. Seal, Cary and Kehoe all reported to her.
The functions under Calhoun — publicity, photo, events, awards, talent relations, etc. — are being eliminated at Paramount+ and will be handled by the studios supplying the streamer, including CBS Studios and MTV Entertainment Studios,...

AMC made a bet earlier this year that licensing a number of its shows to Netflix would help them find more viewers. That bet appears to have paid off.
Two AMC shows, Dark Winds and A Discovery of Witches, are among the top 10 streaming titles for the week of Aug. 19-25. They were added to Netflix at the beginning of that week as part of a deal struck in July to place about a dozen AMC shows on the service, complete with branding as the “AMC Collection.” (The shows will be available for 12 months.)
It’s not new territory for AMC, which partially credited Netflix for a huge spike in ratings for Breaking Bad’s final season and has also licensed The Walking Dead and Better Call Saul, among others, to the streamer in the past.
Dark Winds drew 929 million minutes of viewing for the week, good for fourth place overall.
