“Gladiator II” (Paramount) is expected to gross over $60 million when it open this week in the U.S./Canada. If so, that will be a strong start for Ridley Scott’s 29th feature in his 45-year career.

With a budget reported to be somewhere around $250 million-$300 million, it will need all of that and more. While this may be his fourth film to cost over over $200 million (adjusting to current dollar value), “Gladiator II” appears to be the highest spend of Scott’s career.

It’s also the record expense for a director over 80. Paramount’s decision to entrust Scott clearly speaks to his past performances, particularly internationally.

We surveyed all 28 previous Scott features, calculating their grosses and budgets at 2024 values. And while a $60 million “Gladiator II” opening would be a record on paper, that only works if you don’t adjust his track record to current dollars and ticket prices.

Irish comedy “Obituary” is prepping for a second season, Variety has learned.

The popular black comedy, which features Siobhán Cullen as an underpaid obituarist who turns to murder, is written by Ray Lawlor.

The plan is for Season 2 to run to six episodes, Variety understands, with Lawlor returning to helm the script. The show’s original producers — Magamedia and Apc Studios — are once again involved, while Hulu is contributing funding.

Casting hasn’t yet been confirmed but it seems unlikely the show would return without lead star Cullen, who has also recently appeared in “The Dry” and Netflix series “Bodkin.”

The first season of “Obituary,” which aired on Irish network Rte, followed Cullen as obituary writer Elvira Clancy, who takes matters into her own hands when her work begins drying up. Soon a crime correspondent at the local paper starts investigating the murders — and falling for Clancy.

April begins with the premiere of The Synanon Fix, a docuseries that follows the rise and fall of the cult-like drug rehabilitation program Synanon. The documentary Brandy Hellville and the Cult of Fast Fashion takes a deep-dive into the controversial “one size fits most” clothing brand Brandy Mellville and the impact of fast fashion on the planet.

An American Bombing: The Road to April 19th looks at the surge of political violence and anti-government sentiment that led to the 1995 Oklahoma City Bombing, and the effects still felt nearly 30 years later. HBO is also returning with a second part to their popular docuseries The Jinx, with filmmakers continuing their investigation of Robert Durst.

August 2023 sees the release of two major football documentaries on HBO and Max. The first is the premiere of Hard Knocks on Aug. 10. The new season of long-running NFL training camp docuseries will center on the New York Jets, new employers of legendary quarterback Aaron Rodgers. On Aug. 23, Max will air the aptly named Bs High. The doc tells the stranger-than-fiction story of high school football team Bishop Sycamore, which pulled off one of the more notable sports scams you’re likely to ever hear about.

Not of the football variety but in keeping with the North American sports theme will be season 2 of Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty on Aug.

‘Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty’ Season 2 Premiere | Aug.

Ridley Scott's 2000 historical epic "Gladiator" -- based very, very, very loosely on real history -- follows a fictional Roman military commander named Maximus Decimus Meridius (Russell Crowe) who suffers a long string of terrible tragedies. Maximus is poised to be the next Roman emperor, but the sniveling, Richard III-like Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) usurps the throne instead. Maximus is arrested for not pledging loyalty, but evades capture and flees home ... only to find that his wife and child have been crucified. Maximus is then kidnapped by slave traders and sold into the gladiatorial arena. He now has to murder others to stay alive and keep his true identity secret, all while Commodus becomes more and more corrupt.

Netflix has released a second trailer for the upcoming action sequel “Extraction 2,” which provides a peek into a jaw-dropping, one-shot action sequence with Chris Hemsworth’s character Tyler Rake at the helm.

On Sunday, Hemsworth teased fans about the upcoming film on Twitter, writing “A single shot oner that clocks in at 21 minutes…you heard that right. Prepare for the ride of your life!!”

Filmmaker Sam Hargrave is back after making his directorial debut with the original “Extraction” in 2020. Once again, he brings his stunt coordinator expertise after working on “Avengers: Endgame,” “Deadpool 2,” “Avengers: Infinity War,” “Suicide Squad,” “Captain America: Civil War,” “Atomic Blonde” and “The Accountant.” On the “Avengers” and “Civil War” movies, he collaborated with the Russo brothers, who produced the two “Extraction” movies.

Russell Crowe will receive the Crystal Globe for outstanding artistic contribution to world cinema at the 57th Karlovy Vary Film Festival (June 30-July 8). The Oscar winning actor will also deploy his musical talent with his band Indoor Garden Party, which will perform at the festival’s opening night concert. The festival also revealed Friday that Johnny Depp would appear in its trailer, which will have its premiere at the opening ceremony.

Russell Crowe is set to receive the coveted Crystal Globe for Outstanding Artistic Contribution to World Cinema at this year’s Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. To celebrate his achievements, the festival will be presenting a 20-year anniversary screening of Peter Weir’s Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, which earned Crowe a Golden Globe nomination.

Crowe is also set to perform with his band Indoor Garden Party at the festival’s opening night concert on June 30.

Iranian-born actress Golshifteh Farahani — who returns to the Berlinale this year to serve on the jury headed by Kristen Stewart — found herself in the middle of several controversies when she first visited the festival in 2009 as one of the stars of Asghar Farhadi’s About Elly.

At the time, there was some speculation over whether the film, which followed a group of middle-class Iranians on a vacation to the Caspian Sea, would be banned in Iran. Appearing before the press, Farahani called the speculation “a storm in a teacup,” while director Farhadi blamed the media for stoking the controversy, saying: “I think they really blew things up out of all proportion. Iranian actress Golshifteh Farahani, who is at the Berlin Film Festival as a member of Kristen Stewart’s jury, has talked passionately about the importance of art in her native country as an antidote to its repressive government.

“In a country, like Iran, which is a dictatorship, art is not only an intellectual or philosophical thing, it’s essential, it’s like oxygen,” she said at the festival’s opening press conference.

“Doing art and being an artist is something that goes beyond, because your existence, by being an artist, is put into danger.”

The Producers Guild of America has a new pair of presidents: Stephanie Allain and Donald De Line.

After running unopposed, veteran producers Allain and De Line were elected to the top role at the trade organization, the PGA announced at their annual membership meeting on Tuesday. Producers and former studio executives Gail Berman and Lucy Fisher, who are stepping down this month, have led the organization since 2018.

Allain’s election marks the first time that a woman of color is leading the PGA, which advocates for producers and other members of the production team in film, television and new media.

“As proud members of the PGA for over twenty years, it’s a great privilege to serve as Presidents. Gail and Lucy’s excellent leadership has grown and strengthened the Guild, and we will build on their progress,” Allain and De Line said in a joint statement.

Allain and De Line elected to succeed Gail Berman and Lucy Fisher in trade group roles.

The Producers Guild of America (PGA) has elected Stephanie Allain and Donald De Line as its new presidents.

Dubai-based distribution and production outfit Front Row Filmed Entertainment has boarded Arab-language comedy “Abdelinho,” directed by Morocco’s Hicham Ayouch and toplined by Ali Suliman (“Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan”).

The move comes as Front Row, which is a prominent Mena region indie distributor, ramps up its production side following its Arabic adaptation of Italian dramedy “Perfect Strangers” that it produced in tandem with Egypt’s Film Clinic. Apple has ordered the limited series “The Big Cigar” about Black Panther leader Huey P. Newton, Variety has learned.

The six-episode series hails from Warner Bros. Television, with André Holland in talks to star as Newton. Exclusive: Matthew Carnahan (House of Lies), Emmy nominee Nadia Hallgren (Becoming), and Ben Crump are developing the legal series Stokes, based on Crump’s life and work as a civil rights attorney. The series will also follow Crump and his team as they travel the country fighting to change the problems within the justice system.

Carnahan, creator and showrunner of Stokes, developed the script with Hallgren. Crump and Carnahan’s producing partner, Joel Ehninger, will executive produce.

“Working with Ben Crump is a stark rebuttal of the old saying about never meeting your heroes. Dunst, who is nominated in the Best Supporting Actress Oscars category for “The Power of the Dog,” revealed during a The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter interview that her breakout “Bring It On” role came with an unexpected criticism.

“During that age I was wanting to be taken seriously too, so I think that even though it was so successful I think there’s part of me that always checks myself or checks what’s around me,” Dunst said. “I remember another actress said something, actually. The actress, author and comedian gained recognition for co-writing, producing, and voicing the short film Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, with Dean Fleisher-Camp. A feature-length version of the 2014 short, which went viral, recently premiered at Telluride Film Festival and was acquired by A24.

Slate’s breakout performance came in the 2014 film Obvious Child in the role of Donna, for which she won the Critics Choice Award for Best Actress in a Comedy. She will next be seen opposite Charlie Day in Amazon’s I Want You Back, written and produced by Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger. The French auteur has become a near fixture in Cannes, where 11 of his 12 features have premiered. This year he could very well make a repeat visit, as the filmmaker confirms his new film will be ready for May.

The year is somehow already almost over! To celebrate another passage around the sun, Netflix is putting its best foot forward with its list of new releases for December 2021.

Netflix’s options of original series are quite vast and impressive this month. It starts early on with two finales: Lost in Space wraps up its story with a third and final season on Dec. 1 and is quickly followed by the last go-around for Spanish hit Money Heist. The blockbusters continue apace from there with The Witcher season 2 premiering on Dec. 17, Emily in Paris season 2 on Dec. 22, and Cobra Kai season 4 on Dec. 31 to close out the year.
