The first trailer for Sony’s horror tentpole “28 Years Later” went viral not only because it marked the return of the zombie horror franchise after 17 years but also because of a one-second shot of an emaciated zombie that looked awfully like Oscar winner Cillian Murphy, who starred in 2002’s “28 Days Later” and is rumored to be returning for the new installment.
Murphy starred in 2002’s “28 Days Later” as Jim, a bicycle courier who wakes up from a coma to discover an apocalyptic London that has been destroyed by a zombie virus. Jim survives the events of the movie but did not appear in the 2007 sequel “28 Weeks Later.” Murphy is an executive producer on the upcoming “28 Years Later,” and the trailer’s reveal of a zombie looking like the Oscar winner left fans both excited that Murphy was back as Jim but devastated over Jim not...

The internet went wild for Cillian Murphy as a zombie, but it seems people have bitten off more than they can chew.
When the 28 Years Later trailer dropped on Tuesday, a glimpse of a lookalike zombie sparked fevered speculation that the film would feature an undead Murphy.
Deadline was among those who speculated that Murphy could be set to reprise his 28 Days Later role of Jim, with the character having succumbed to the “Rage Virus.”
Sony Pictures Entertainment did little to quell the internet rumors, which included celebrity culture accounts joking about his look.

By now, you've probably seen the 28 Years Later trailer. Many people are clamoring over one particular still that appears to show a desiccated Cillian Murphy. Murphy, who starred in the 2002 film as bicycle courier Jim, will return in some capacity, and the trailer seems to indicate he might have fallen victim to the Rage Virus... or something else entirely.
Danny Boyle and Alex Garland are also returning for this sequel, the start of a new trilogy that will debut in June 2025. Considering the hype surrounding this movie, perhaps one of the most influential modern films of all time on the outbreak subgenre, it's understandable why many people are looking to revisit the 2002 movie. Unfortunately, most people are out of luck.

Cillian Murphy has become a major member of Hollywood's A-list lately, in no small part thanks to his leading role in Christopher Nolan's blockbuster Best Picture-winner "Oppenheimer." In truth, however, Murphy has been delivering on screen for decades now, working with some of cinema's best directors along the way. What's more, one of his early hits was his collaboration with Oscar-winner Danny Boyle on the much-beloved pandemic/zombie horror film "28 Days Later." Unfortunately, more than 20 years later, the movie is all but impossible for most people to watch.
"28 Days Later" was released in 2002, with Fox Searchlight Pictures handling distribution while DNA Films and the U.K. Film Council provided the funding. It was a small movie that ended up finding a bigger audience than anyone expected. It's also one of those movies that, because it was funded by...

The trailer of the threequel was released recently and showed Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ralph Fiennes, and a possible cameo from Cillian Murphy, who headlined the original film.

Cillian Murphy has proven himself to be one of the most worthy assets to the entertainment industry, and his latest Oscar win further serves as a testament to his brilliance. Besides being thoroughly known for his impeccable charms, he is also famous for his unwavering commitment to his roles, be it in a thriller like 28 Days Later or a historical drama like Oppenheimer.

“28 Years Later,” the long-in-the-works sequel to zombie horror movies “28 Days Later” and “28 Weeks Later,” is coming to theaters next summer, but Sony is already building anticipation. On Tuesday, the studio released an intense trailer for the film. Director Danny Boyle (Academy Award winner for “Slumdog Millionaire”) and screenwriter Alex Garland (Academy Award nominee for “Ex Machina”) resume those roles for the first time since the acclaimed first film, which was released in 2002.
“28 Years Later” is set in rural England many years after the “rage virus” ravaged the world, turning the infected into fast, aggressive zombies, which was innovative in the first film, as up to that point zombies had generally been depicted in their slow, shuffling traditional state. “It’s been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory, and now, still in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amidst the infected,...

The zombie film 28 Days Later came out way back in 2002, and fans have never been quite able to let it go. These aren't the slow, ambling zombies we're used to from stuff like The Walking Dead or Night of the Living Dead; the zombies in 28 Days Later were fast, angry and focused. We got a sequel movie called 28 Weeks Later in 2007, but it didn't involve the original creative team. Now, over two decades after the original, director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland are back in the driver's seat for 28 Years Later, which picks up after the zombie apocalypse has properly devastated society, as zombie apocalypses tend to do.
Sony dropped the officially trailer for 28 Years Later earlier today, and it is properly scary, particularly when it's underscored by an unsettling reading of Rudyard Kipling’s 1903 poem “Boots.” We characters played by the likes of Aaron Taylor-Johnson,...

If you’re honest with yourself, you probably weren’t all that excited about 28 Years Later when you first heard about it. After all, as entertaining as 2002’s 28 Days Later was, 2007’s 28 Weeks Later demonstrated all the signs of diminishing returns. It wasn’t as scary. It wasn’t as memorable. And it turns out that things just weren’t as interesting six months after a zombie outbreak as they were four weeks after. By rights, 28 Years Later should continue this trend. And, when it comes out, that might still prove to be the case. As of now, though, it’s just about the most exciting film of 2025. And this is entirely down to its trailer.

If ever there was a franchise that deserved a third part, it is Danny Boyle and Alex Garland's "Days Later..." concept. The first one, 28 Days Later... was the pop cultural birth of both the 'fast zombie' as well as studio level digital cinema. The second film, a beautiful and profoundly underrated hybrid of intimate family drama, action, and gory as all get out horror, 28 Weeks Later, directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, upped the scale (and the intensity) as sequels often do, and was exceptional at it. It has taken some time, but Danny Boyle returns to the director's chair for a third entry, and Alex Garland...

The pair are joined here by an incredible lineup of onscreen talent too, including Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Ralph Feinnes.
While the footage features plenty of folks on the run and trying to avoid getting nibbled or nicked by Rage infected locals (as you would expect), the most jarring thing about the "28 Years Later" trailer is the unsettling audio accompanying it. Nearly 20 years since the last film in the franchise, Danny Boyle returns to his long-awaited zombie apocalypse sequel. Titled “28 Years Later,” the film reunites with screenwriter-turned-director Alex Garland—their first film together since 2007’s “Sunshine,” released in the same year as “28 Weeks Later.” Not that much is known about the film, but it appears the rage virus, which had been dormant for nearly three decades has returned.

The long-awaited third instalment in the 28 Days Later franchise is finally on its way. 28 Years Later, directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland, will bring audiences back to the dystopian world shaped by the infamous rage virus. Set to release on 20 June, the film features a powerhouse cast including Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jack O’Connell, and Ralph Fiennes, promising a gripping exploration of survival, mutation, and terror.
The 28 Days Later series first shocked audiences in 2002, revitalising the zombie genre with its unique take on the infected and its gritty, realistic atmosphere. Boyle and Garland’s collaboration delivered a chilling post-apocalyptic vision where speed, aggression, and raw emotion replaced the shambling dread of traditional zombies. Its intense pacing, stark visuals, and nuanced storytelling have influenced countless horror films since. The sequel, 28 Weeks Later (2007), expanded the scope, delving into the aftermath of a failed attempt to rebuild society.

22 years ago, Danny Boyle and Alex Garland helped to kickstart a zombie movie renaissance with "28 Days Later," a movie that isn't technically a zombie film but, rather, a pandemic film. And sadly, 22 years later, that subgenre is bloodily ripe for the exploitin'.
On June 20, 2025, "28 Years Later" will pick up 18 years (in our own timeline) after the rage virus bedlam of Juan Carlos Fresndillo's 2007 sequel "28 Weeks Later." Lest you think this is some small affair, know that 2024 Academy Award winner Cillian Murphy is reprising his role as the once comatose Jim for the film. He'll be joined by the immensely talented likes of Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, Jack O'Connell, and Ralph Fiennes in the cast. As for the state of the world in "28 Years Later," per the premise the rage virus is once again spreading and, presumably, the aforementioned actors will be scrambling to keep from joining the ranks of the infected.

28 Days Later director (Danny Boyle) and writer (Alex Garland) have re-teamed up for a series of sequels to the 2002 horror hit, and following yesterday's poster, the first teaser for the first film in the planned trilogy, 28 Years Later, has been released online.
The promo is only a few seconds long, but does contain some nightmarish imagery, including one quick shot of a rather freaky-looking scarecrow (something tells us it's made from more than just straw) with an arrow in its head. Also, the morse code repeats the word "Tuesday," indicating that a full trailer will be with us early next week.
Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Ralph Fiennes have signed on to play the lead roles, and it's also been confirmed that Cillian Murphy will return as the original movie's protagonist, Jim.

Nearly two decades after the last installment, the first look at 28 Years Later raises more questions than answers — one being, “Does anyone know morse code?”
Sony debuted the first poster and teaser for the zombie sequel on Friday, ahead of the Alex Garland-written, Danny Boyle-directed film’s June 20, 2025 premiere, featuring a morse code message over a series of cryptic images.
According to one comment, the message spells “Tuesday,” which hopefully means a longer sneak peek to come this week.

The 28 Years Later poster features more of the red skulls in the shape of the biohazard symbol, billing stars Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Ralph Fiennes at the top. “Time didn’t heal anything,” reads the tagline.

Sos! Zombies are back! The Rage virus has return! Alert, alert. Sony Pictures has revealed a surprised secret teaser for the upcoming 28 Years Later horror sequel - arriving in theaters June 2025 next summer. It's once again being directed by Danny Boyle, who directed the original 28 Days Later (from 2002), a horror classic featuring fast zombies that still remains a favorite amongst zombie fans. Its sequel 28 Weeks Later (from 2007) was directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and was only exec produced by Boyle at the time. This next one also features Alex Garland returning to co-write the screenplay with Boyle. And I'm guessing it's going to be an angry sequel because the tagline is "time didn't heal anything." Oh damn. It was shot back-to-back with its sequel 28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple, directed by Nia DaCosta, which doesn't have a release date yet. This teaser is actually just...

After deciding to skip Ccxp this weekend, Sony Pictures has released the first poster for 28 Years Later (via FearHQ.com). With any luck, this means a trailer isn't far behind.
The movie picks up after the events of Danny Boyle's 28 Days Later and Juan Carlos Fresnadillo's 28 Weeks Later.
We don't learn much here, though it's a fitting piece of imagery for the franchise which confirms that Civil War and Ex Machina director Alex Garland returned to write the script after previously penning Boyle's 28 Days Later and Sunshine.
The poster also includes an ominous new tagline: "Time Didn't Heal Anything."
Official plot details for 28 Years Later have been kept under wraps. However, it's no secret that Boyle is returning to direct this opening chapter before handing over the reins to Nia DaCosta (Candyman) for the second instalment of a planned trilogy.

Danny Boyle is reprising the grungy, digital style of 2002’s 28 Days Later with his upcoming sequel, 28 Years Later. With iPhones…
Depending on your interest in visual aesthtics and depending on how long it’s been since you last saw 2002’s 28 Days Later, you may have forgotten just how grungy Danny Boyle’s zombie horror flick looks. That was all intentional, of course; the movie was shot by cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle using a a Canon Xl-1, a relatively inexpensive ‘prosumer’ camcorder, recording onto MiniDV.
It gave the film a noisy, unvarnished look, perfect for a film about the catastrophic fall of civilisation. According to Wired, Boyle has elected to go down a similar route for his forthcoming sequel, 28 Years Later. The outlet reports that the film was shot on iPhone 15s, with the devices being slightly modified to allow for the attachment of full-frame Dslr lenses.

Looking for something to scare your socks off? Here’s our picks of the best horror films on Disney Plus UK.
There’s something primal and exciting about experiencing real fear in a safe place, such as your sofa. That’s the beauty of horror films, but I think you’ll agree that it can be tricky finding a really good one. After all, fear is subjective and there’s a lot of less-than-great scary films out there, which is why we felt this list was a pretty important one.
If you feel like you’ve exhausted the libraries of other streaming services, Disney+ has a surprisingly wide range of horror films in its catalogue, and we’ve picked some excellent suggestions for you. We’ve got ghosts, cannibals, mutants, zombies and the occasional so-bad-it’s-actually-good film here. Enjoy!

The sequel to 28 Years Later begins production today as producer Andrew Macdonald and writer Alex Garland talked about what will hopefully be a trilogy and their enduring partnership during an on-stage talk at the Edinburgh International Film Festival (Eiff) on Sunday, August 18.

Filmmaker Alex Garland was joined by his longtime collaborator and producer Andrew Macdonald in Edinburgh to ponder their career-spanning relationship, favorite projects and upcoming 28 Days zombie trilogy.
The duo, who have teamed up on titles such as The Beach (2000), 28 Days Later (2002), Ex Machina (2014) and most recently, Civil War (2024), spoke at an Edinburgh International Film Festival event on Sunday to a jam-packed room of industry professionals (who were hanging on to every word).
Garland and Macdonald discussed how they came to work together, as well as a few rows they’ve had over the years. Garland, who began his career as a novelist with The Beach before pivoting into screenwriting and, eventually, directing, admitted that while he doesn’t particularly enjoy directing, there is one film — his debut directorial feature — that he considers his top pick from an impressive résumé.

I’ve been obsessed with apocalyptic fiction since I was a small boy, but young Luiz was always frustrated with the disproportionate amount of media that takes place months or even years after the end of the world instead of showing us the apocalypse as it happens. It was only years later that I understood the logistical difficulties in telling a believable yarn about a near-instant societal collapse, though I never stopped wishing for more stories that take place in the moments between our current world and whatever wasteland comes next.
Thankfully, there are a few brave filmmakers willing to take on the challenge of depicting the early days of humanity’s downfall. The output of Marvel, Lucasfilm and the Mouse House’s own library of films and TV shows are Disney Plus’s big selling point. With this in mind, here’s our list of the best films on Disney Plus that aren’t Iron Man, Star Wars, Frozen or anything of that ilk. Encompassing just about every genre, there’s sure to be something to suit your taste if you’re struggling to decide what to watch this evening.
We’ll also keep this list updated as titles shuffle off and new ones are added.

Nb: The following contains spoilers for 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later, plus potential plot details for 28 Years Later.

Things are about to change, however, with the 2025 release of 28 Years Later. It’ll see director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland reunite for a belated sequel, which as its title suggests will take place almost three decades after the outbreak of the Rage virus that swept across the UK in the original film.
Nor is it the only sequel on the way; Candyman...

Danny Boyle has finished shooting his horror follow-up, 28 Years Later, while Nia DaCosta prepares to start filming another sequel next month.
28 Years Later has wrapped production in London, capping a shoot that began towards the end of May. Everybody involved will be getting a wee summer break before reuniting to shoot the next film in the planned trilogy, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, which will also be filmed in London.
Well, not quite everybody. 28 Years Later's director, Danny Boyle is passing the torch to Candyman helmer Nia DaCosta for the second film in the planned trilogy and the fourth film in the overall series. As yet, we also don’t know if the lead cast of 28 Years Later will be returning for the follow-up, that being Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes and Charlie Hunman. Hopefully it stays that way too as knowing the actors are all set to...

Shooting continues on 28 Years Later, the first instalment of a planned trilogy picking up after the events of Danny Boyle's classic 28 Days Later and Juan Carlos Fresnadillo's slightly less well-received 28 Weeks Later.
Now, thanks to Mail Online (via FearHQ.com), we have a first look at Free Guy star Jodie Cormer being chased down by a group of blood-soaked, naked zombies. The undead look terrifying and perhaps a little more grounded than what we've seen in The Walking Dead and Army of the Dead, for example.
As for their lack of clothes, that does make sense when you stop and think about it.
While plot details for 28 Years Later are being kept under wraps, we know that Boyle will return to direct this opening chapter before handing over the reins to Nia DaCosta (Candyman) for a planned second instalment.
