Piranha 3D is a remake of Piranha (1978) (1978), which was a parody of Jaws (1975) (1975). The new film was written by American screenwriters Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger. A sequel, Piranha 3DD (2012), was released in 2012.
No. Piranhas usually stay away from humans. However, just because attacks are rare doesn't mean they're not dangerous. There are no documented cases of a piranha killing a person.
No and yes. Despite being listed in the end credits as Matt Boyd, Richard Dreyfuss does in fact parody Matt Hooper, his "Jaws" character, a fact which has been stated numerous times by the film's director, Alexandre Aja, in interviews and public appearances. In order to tie the character to the earlier shark film, he is seen drinking the same brand of beer as he did in "Jaws" and is also singing the same song he did in that film.
She played Paula, the other seismologist who goes down into the cave.
Andrew (Paul Scheer) fell overboard when the boat hit the rocks. After that, we never see what happened. Director Alexandre Aja was asked about this in an interview. This was his response: For the whole movie he's wearing that sun protection on his nose, which makes his character look a little bit goofy. At the end he was managing to swim towards the shore and was just being chased by a couple of piranhas, and they were just biting him. Finally, one of them just jumps out of the water and bites off his nose. That was the scene. I put the scene in the deleted scenes, but it was very expensive and every shot had so much effects. The full transcript of the interview can be read here. Andrew returns for the sequel.
During the massacre Todd (Cody Longo) was last seen jumping onto a boat and driving it through the swimmers in a desperate bid to escape to the shore. The boat's engine cuts out due to a swimmer's hair being caught in the rotor. The swimmers surrounding the boat try to climb aboard the boat to escape the piranha but end up capsizing it, and everyone (including Todd) falls back into the water. Todd is presumably eaten, but his death is never shown.
As he is fending off the piranha with the outboard motor, he is seen getting lower into the water, grimacing in pain, making it obvious he was being eaten. He loses both his legs but in the sequel Piranha 3DD (2012) he has a metal stump for a leg with a shotgun attachment.
After the credits there is a shot of a human skull underwater, sinking.
