Exclusive: Here are a couple of exclusive images of Inglourious Basterds star Diane Kruger in buzzy Paramount+ series Little Disasters.

Cannes Award-winning actor Kruger plays Jess in the adaptation of the Sarah Vaughan novel. When she takes her baby daughter to hospital with a head injury that she can’t explain, her close friend and on-duty A&e doctor Liz must make the excruciating decision of whether to call social services on her longtime friend. This decision sets in motion a chain of events that show how one moment can fracture and nearly destroy entire families and friendships. The show also stars Jo Joyner, Patrick Baladi (Ted Lasso), Shelley Conn, Emily Taaffe, JJ Feild, Ben Bailey Smith and Stephen Campbell Moore.

Kruger has had far more movie roles than TV but she did play Detective Sonya Cross in FX’s version of The Bridge last decade. The German actor, who broke out in 2004’s epic war film Troy, was described as an “intelligent and dynamic actress, whose sheer presence brings with it a unique quality that leaves you inspired” by Little Disasters director Eva Sigurdardottir.

“Attaching Diane allowed me to explore sides of Jess’ character in deeper ways than I had anticipated,” she added. “Little Disasters is a story of a warm and loving mother who is hiding a dark secret, and Diane navigated that character so elegantly, with relatable and warm performances, as well as truly haunting and thrilling moments.”

That relatability attracted Sigurdardottir to Little Disasters, she told us, along with a “tension and thriller engine rooted in very relatable and familiar domestic settings.”

“I am a filmmaker who is drawn to brutally real and gritty stories, and here we had a glamorous and aspirational setting, yet with a terrifying central conflict – a hurt child,” she added.

Marianna Abbotts is exec producing for Big Boys producer Roughcut TV, which has recently moved into drama. She said she “fell in love with” Vaughan’s novels after reading Anatomy of a Scandal. “Sarah often writes about professional women who are forced to make impossible decisions. At the heart of Little Disasters is a really difficult moral dilemma when one friend is forced to call social services on another,” she added.

To aid with tackling these sensitive topics, the Roughcut team worked closely with Vaughan along with multiple advisors. “We wanted to portray the issues in the book accurately and it was extremely important to get that right,” said Abbotts. “We consulted medical, police and social service advisers who guided us with accuracy and sensitivity while understanding the need to tell a dramatic story.”

Little Disasters is a six-part series for Paramount+ UK and Ireland. Ruth Fowler and Amanda Duke adapted the series for the screen with Roughcut Television EPs Ash Atalla, Alex Smith and Abbotts on board alongside Vaughan. Simon Judd EPs for Fremantle, Sigurdardottir is the director and Myf Hopkins serves as the producer. The series was commissioned by Sebastian Cardwell and Paul Testar and will premiere next year. Fremantle is handling global sales.

Band of Brothers was one of the most critically acclaimed war drama series that depicted World War II on television, and while this accomplishment meant so much for the creators, some of its cast members were not completely thrilled with their experience.

Playwright Alan Bennett has written original screenplay The Choral, which will begin filming this summer.

Sony Pictures Classics has taken worldwide rights to Nicholas Hytner’s The Choral, written by Alan Bennett, and set to star Ralph Fiennes, Jim Broadbent and Simon Russell Beale.

This is the fourth feature collaboration between Bennett and Hytner after The Lady In The Van, The History Boys and The Madness Of King George. Unlike those films,The Choral is based on an original screenplay rather than a play.

Hytner will produce the film alongside Kevin Loader and Damian Jones. Backing comes from Sony Pictures Classics, BBC Film and Screen Yorkshire, and shooting will commence in Yorkshire this May.

BAFTA-nominated Irish actor Robert Sheehan (The Umbrella Academy) has signed on to lead a stage adaptation of Bruce Robinson’s 1987 cult tragi-comedy Withnail and I at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre alongside actors Adonis Siddique and Malcolm Sinclair.

Directed by the double Olivier Award-winning Sean Foley, Artistic Director of Birmingham Rep, and designed by Alice Power, the show will premiere at Birmingham Repertory Theatre, with performances from 3 May until 25 May 2024.

The adaption was written by Robinson. The original film was based on an unpublished novel by Robinson and was produced by Handmade Films, with Richard E Grant, Paul McGann, and Richard Griffiths leading. On stage, Sheehan will star as Withnail while Siddique is Marwood, and Malcolm Sinclair is Uncle Monty.

Westend Films has released the first image of Anthony Hopkins and Matthew Goode in Freud’s Last Session, as the legendary psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud and writer and academic C.S. Lewis, prior to his Chronicles Of Narnia fame.

Filming is in its final stages in Ireland.

Set on the eve of the Second World War, the film revolves around a meeting between Freud and Lewis, at the psychoanalyst’s London home, during which they debate the existence of God.

It’s fine to have heavy-lifting dramas by Ibsen or Schiller, but boy-oh-boy laughter is an increasingly uplifting necessity.

As much as it’s about the cat-and-mouse chase between the robbers of £26 million’s worth of gold bullion in November 1983, and the special task force trying to catch them, it’s also about the British class system. Over six episodes (airing weekly on BBC One and available as a box-set on BBC iPlayer), Forsyth tells a story about villains on both sides of the social divide and the entrenched systems protecting those at the top. His London is just as veined with establishment corruption, freemasonry and snobbery as it is with armed robbers, hooky fences and locals who keep their mouths shut for fear of reprisal.

Like some kind of cinematic equivalent of the vault in the Tower of London where the Crown jewels are stored, the stage-to-screen adaptation Allelujah piles a number of “national treasures” atop one another: a script based on a play from 2018 by national treasure Alan Bennett (The Madness of King George); a cast featuring such treasured national stars as Judi Dench, Derek Jacobi and Jennifer Saunders; direction from feted theater and film veteran Richard Eyre (Iris, Notes on a Scandal) and so on. It’s all rolled up in a story about the institution every Brit most loves to love and moan about in equal measure, the National Health Service. What could possibly go wrong?

At the risk of having my Leave to Remain resident status in the U.K. revoked, I am sad to report that Allelujah the film is something of a disappointment.

Exclusive: UK sales and production firm Embankment is teaming up with veteran UK producer Kevin Loader to create new label Free Range Entertainment.

The key shareholders in the company are Embankment’s Tim Haslam and Hugo Grumbar and Free Range’s Kevin Loader.

The combined company will develop, produce, co-produce, sell, and distribute film, TV and “allied” content, while also investing directly into production and working with third party investors and financiers.

Tim Haslam explained: “Free Range Entertainment is a creative hub for like-minded storytellers, writers, directors, and producers; converting IP from inception and development, through to production and commercial global exploitation. The Embankment sales brand will continue.”

Free Range Films was founded by producer Kevin Loader and director Roger Michell in 1996. Following Michell’s untimely passing last September, the production company has decided to embark on a new structural partnership.

James Corden has been lighting up homes in the United States on "The Late Late Show" for nearly a decade, but his time on the show is coming to an end soon. Back in March 2020, the Bob Dylan songbook musical “Girl From the North Country” opened on Broadway on March 5, just one week before theaters shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic. Now more than 19 months later, the show returned to the Belasco Theatre and reopened on Oct. 13.

Even though the musical officially opened last year, it did not run long enough for many of the approximately 800 Tony Awards voters to attend and was therefore deemed ineligible for consideration at this past ceremony. Since it has returned to Broadway, though, “North Country” will compete at the 2022 ceremony, over two years after its original opening date.

Exclusive: Tommy Oliver’s Confluential Films has expanded its executive team, tapping Charlotte Koh as its first President and Prince Baggett as Head of Film.

In their new roles, Koh and Baggett will continue the company’s strategic growth and allow it to further expand its creative footprint.

Koh will report to Confluential Founder and CEO Tommy Oliver, working to help drive the organization’s vision, operational strategy, and hiring needs, while co-managing the development team and their projects.

Baggett will lead Confluential’s motion picture group with an emphasis on studio fare from diverse creators with appropriate representation in front of and behind the camera. He will report to Koh, and both will work closely with Oliver’s partner (and wife) Codie Elaine Oliver, and Confluential’s Head of Development, Jonny Paterson.

Fargo actor David Thewlis is to star opposite Olivia Colman in HBO and Sky’s limited series Landscapers, which tells the story of a couple who become the focus of an extraordinary investigation when two dead bodies are discovered in a back garden.

Tanya Phegan has quit Easy Tiger to join Guesswork Television as head of scripted, overseeing the development and production of its scripted slate.

Part of the Token Group, Guesswork had been looking to hire an experienced scripted exec since creative director Todd Abbott departed in July to take the post of head of comedy at the ABC.

Phegan spent more than three years at Easy Tiger where she was scripted development producer. Before that she was head of television at Porchlight Films for three years, where she co-created and co-produced Operation Buffalo for the ABC.

Starting at Guesswork on November 16, she will work with MD Jon Casimir, head of production Frank Bruzzese and Gm Heather Pritchard.

The eight-episode series — written and executive-produced by Frost, Pegg, Nat Saunders and James Serafinowicz — follows part-time paranormal investigators who check out allegedly haunted locations throughout the United Kingdom.

Tobias Menzies played Prince Philip on Season 3 of Netflix’s “The Crown,” taking over for Matt Smith. The “Outlander” alum won a SAG Award for Best Drama Ensemble alongside his “Crown” cast earlier this year.

Gold Derby: Tobias, the royal family are very much a part of our consciousness. There’s so much to absorb about Prince Philip as a public persona. So how did you decide to approach getting to know his private or personal side?

Tobias Menzies: There’s obviously a lot written about him and a fair amount of interviews and footage of him.

Jodie Comer, Martin Freeman, Tamsin Greig, Kristin Scott Thomas and Imelda Staunton are among the stars lined up for new BBC One adaptations of playwright Alan Bennett’s acclaimed “Talking Heads” monologues, which start filming Tuesday.

Ten of the original pieces are being remade, having first aired on BBC Television in 1988 and 1998, winning two BAFTA awards. Two new monologues, written by Bennett last year, are also being filmed.

The contained nature of Bennett’s monologues means they are one of the very few dramas that can be produced while following guidelines on safe working practices during Covid-19. Filming is taking place at BBC Elstree Studios using existing sets.

They are produced by former National Theatre artistic director Nicholas Hytner’s London Theatre Company and ‘The Personal History of David Copperfield’ producer Kevin Loader.

The BBC has dusted off British playwright Alan Bennett’s famous series of Talking Heads monologues and is remaking them for the coronavirus age with a head-turning cast.

Killing Eve actress Jodie Comer, Sherlock‘s Martin Freeman and the soon-to-be star of The Crown Imelda Staunton are among those attached to the project, which will breathe new life into the BAFTA-winning show that ran for two seasons in 1988 and a decade later in 1998.

Talking Heads will be produced by London Theatre Company for BBC One, and overseen by Bennett’s long-time collaborator Sir Nicholas Hytner, who staged shows including The History Boys. The plan is to make 12 episodes, 10 of which will be monologues filmed for the original series and two new stories Bennett sent Hytner last year.

Exclusive: ITV is remaking Belgian crime drama Professor T, starring Johnny English’s Ben Miller and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire’s Frances de la Tour.

The series is produced by Eagle Eye Drama, the production company set up by the founders of foreign language streaming service Walter Presents, and the order marks its first original drama commission.

Based on the hit Belgian series of the same name, Professor T is set against the backdrop of Cambridge University, one of the world’s most prestigious educational institutions.

Miller, who also starred in BBC crime drama Death in Paradise, plays the genius Ocd criminologist, Professor Jasper Tempest, while de la Tour, the Tony-winning actress who starred in The History Boys stage show in London and Broadway as well as classic British sitcom Rising Damp, stars as his colourful but overbearing mother, Adelaide.

The Crown‘s Claire Foy and Matt Smith will reprise their acclaimed London stage roles for a New York production of director Matthew Warchus’ staging of Duncan Macmillan’s play Lungs.

Following its sold-out run at London’s Old Vic, Lungs will be presented at Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Harvey Theater for a limited run from March 25 – April 19, 2020, producers announced.

The production marks the three Old Vic staging set for a New York run this season, following the current Broadway production of A Christmas Carol and the upcoming Girl from the North Country.

The synopsis for Lungs, about a young couple wrestling with one of life’s biggest dilemmas, is as follows: “The ice caps are melting, there’s overpopulation, political unrest; everything’s going to hell in a handbasket – why on earth would someone bring a baby into this world?”

This is the 21st time that this has happened over the 73-year history of these top theater honors. Most of the winners were actually on the opposite end of the spectrum, winning for the first time after years of Broadway experience and several nominations to their name including André De Shields, Celia Keenan-Bolger and Stephanie J. Veteran press agents Jim Byk and Shane Marshall Brown are launching a new theatrical and entertainment publicity office, the duo announced to Deadline today. The new company will be called The Press Room.

Publicist Kelly Guiod will serve as vice president.

Both Byk and Brown move from Sam Rudy Media Relations; Brown, a senior press agent there, will work concurrently with Rudy and The Press Room before pivoting to the new company full time in 2019.

Clients to be represented by The Press Room include this season’s Broadway productions of Kenneth Lonergan’s The Waverly Gallery; King Lear starring Glenda Jackson; the world premiere of Gloria: A Life; and The Book of Mormon.

Broadway is as American as apple pie — or at least as American as the Big Apple. But this year, a lot of the nominees for Broadway’s biggest night have one thing in common: A British passport.

Of the shows nominated for best new play at the June 10 Tony Awards, three out of the five originated in London. The race for lead actor in a play is being run by four Britons and one American; the ratio’s the same in the competition for featured actress in a play. And the frontrunner for lead actress in a play? Glenda Jackson, who’s so British she used to be a member of Parliament.

This isn’t how it was supposed to be. It’s a warm Spring day in Los Angeles, and James Corden is touring me around the rooftop space at CBS Television City that The Late Late Show calls home. In a half hour, the show’s writing staff will file into Corden’s office for their daily meeting, but right now, Corden is content to stop and smell the roses, pointing out the little details in the design of his show’s set that make him smile. The 3D model houses on the La skyline behind his desk. The stack of beaten up records. The mini billboard they use for posters of guests’ latest projects.
