It’s strange how the movies you see as a child tend to stick with you throughout the years. Odder still are the movies that have a profound personal impact on you because of one specific scene. Over the years, I’ve written about plenty of them for this long-running feature I’ve done on JoBlo called The Best Movie You Never Saw. For me, one such movie is the 1991 thriller Dead Again, which was directed by Kenneth Branagh, who also co-stars along with his then-wife, Emma Thompson, Derek Jacobi, Andy Garcia and the late, great Robin Williams (in an unbilled role). I saw this at ten years old on the Canadian equivalent of HBO, First Choice, and it had a profound impact on me for one specific reason I’ll get to shortly.
But first, some background on this often overlooked film. In the late eighties,...

At long last, Eddie Murphy is reprising his role as street-smart cop Axel Foley in the fourth instalment of the Beverly Hills Cop franchise, which is set to hit Netflix this summer. But, it isn’t easy being a middle aged action star. It’s been nearly thirty years since we last saw Eddie Murphy as Axel Foley, and in a recent interview with People Magazine he admitted that the shoot was a “rough one”.“I did Axel Foley when I was in my 20s. I am not in my 20s anymore,” he said. At any rate, Murphy won’t be the only aged actor from the original to show up, with many of the classic Beverly Hills Cop cast members are set to join him in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley. Here’s everything we know about Beverly Hills Cop 4!

Bigger and longer are not always better. Case in point: Freud’s Last Session, the lavish film based on a modest off-Broadway play that captivated theater audiences a decade ago. Playwright Mark St. Germain worked with director Matthew Brown (The Man Who Knew Infinity) to reshape his two-character drama about an imaginary conversation between Sigmund Freud and C.S. Lewis as they debate the existence of God. That provocative exchange is still in the movie, and it sometimes crackles, thanks to the performances of Matthew Goode as Lewis and, especially, Anthony Hopkins as Freud. But the heart of the story is constantly undermined by a surfeit of asides about Lewis’ experiences in the First World War, Freud’s highly charged relationship with his daughter Anna, and several other subplots.

Heading into the two-part season one finale it’s reassuring to know episodes 12 and 13 will not be Will Trent‘s final episodes. The network officially renewed the popular drama for season two ahead of its season one finale.
“We’re so thankful to our ABC and Hulu fans for joining us on this wild ride and watching Will Trent,” stated Ramón Rodríguez. “When we set out to bring the series to television screens, we wanted to do justice to the gritty, thrilling world that Karin Slaughter created with her bestselling book series. Liz Heldens, Dan Thomsen, and the creative team have developed complex and nuanced characters that people are relating to on a human level. We’re so excited for the opportunity to dive deeper into these stories with season two.”
Episode 12 will air on Tuesday, April 25, 2023 at 10pm Et/Pt.

Any doubt that HBO Max’s Peacemaker series would have the same energy, style, and sense of humor that writer-director James Gunn brought to last year’s feature film The Suicide Squad is dispelled within seconds of the superhero show’s opening-credits sequence. It is essentially an Eighties-style music video, with the homicidal title character, played once again by John Cena, and his supporting cast performing a choreographed dance number on a neon-lit stage while the Norwegian glam-metal band Wig Wam’s song “Do Ya Wanna Taste It” shreds in the background.

Stephen King is one of the most prolific and heavily adapted authors on the planet, but over the last few months, he’s also proven to come in very handy for Netflix subscribers who can’t decide what to watch. The horror icon regularly posts suggestions on social media, inspiring his fans to hunker down and enjoy the same content as their hero.

Gotham's baddies are such a weird bunch. You'd think Batwoman Season 1 Episode 18 would be the moment Batwoman's identity was blown since Sabatino literally has her tied up on a wheeled dolly.
But, no, his business instinct is to first auction off the right to kill her, and Then reveal her identity to all present.
Of course, this is the same business sense that led him to betray Tommy Elliot and accept Mary Hamilton-Kane's story that she's there to buy the Bat Suit.
And then there's the sad news that both my preferred Bat-Girlfriend candidates have their own agendas.
Boo-urns. I really liked Reagan when we met her on Batwoman Season 1 Episode 4 but I guess that's the whole point.
It did twig on me a little that she seemed to pop up whenever we get a Magpie appearance but there was no hint ever given before the reveal that they were sisters.

Exclusive: There are dozens of dialogue lines that made William Goldman an iconic screenwriter — “Follow the money” from All the President’s Men, and “Is it safe?” from Marathon Man among them — but to a legion of top screenwriters whom Goldman helped find their voices, here’s a lesser-known signature line just as memorable: “I’m in the book.”
That is what Goldman said to many young screenwriters who dared ask a legend for help, back when people actually thumbed through the white pages of the New York City phone book. That’s where Goldman left his Manhattan number, which led to tutorials over lunches at places like The Carlyle Hotel, where Goldman held court and spread the gospel of good writing to so many. Even though he wrote many a withering column about movies he didn’t love — the manipulative bookend-ed start and end of Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan...

Welcome to Career Watch, a vocational checkup of top actors and directors, and those who hope to get there. In this edition we take on Jeff Daniels, who’s riding the swells during the current television tsunami. He’s not only in constant demand, but the adroit character actor has become a star.
Bottom Line: Always a reliable working actor in movies, theater and television, 62-year-old Daniels broke out in his 50s with a huge career boost from Aaron Sorkin, who cast him as a gruff workaholic network anchor Will McAvoy in HBO’s Golden Globe- and Emmy-winning series “The Newsroom.” After playing the character, a news veteran trying to keep up with the times, Daniels hasn’t looked back. “I’m working in my 60s,” he marveled. “Look at any decade in my career: it’s not how they draw it up in star school. The only way to...

When filmmaker Steven Soderbergh (Ocean’s Eleven, Logan Lucky) gets involved in a project, I pay attention. An old school western miniseries is coming to Netflix later this year from Steven Soderbergh and director Scott Frank (The Lookout). The last time the two of them worked together was on their adaptation of Elmore Leonard’s Out of Sight, so of course their next collaboration has our expectations sky high. Frank, who last directed A Walk Among the Tombstones, wrote […]

From Dumb & Dumber and The Martian, through to Arachnophobia and Steve Jobs - we salute the screen work of Jeff Daniels...
They say that when you play the Game of Thrones, “you win or you die”. The Game of Jeff Daniels, however, is an undeniably different beast and for the most part is a definite “you win or you win”. After viewing dozens of Jeff Daniels movies and spending many, many hours with his on-screen personas, it’s fair to say that the maxim has been sorely tested but guess what? It still holds true. This list has been carefully curated to celebrate the veteran actor’s talent, versatility and wit and no matter which (if any) of these movies you decide to revisit or check out for the first time, Jeff is guaranteed to give you something to love in each and every one.

I'm very excited to see the upcoming Netflix western show Godless, which hails from exec producer Steven Soderbergh and producer/writer/director Scott Frank (Out of Sight, Minority Report, The Wolverine, The Lookout) and now THR has some confirmation of new cast members for us.
Jeff Daniels has been confirmed to play the show's villain, an outlaw named Frank Griffin who's ravaging the west as he and his gang hunt down his protege-turned-nemesis Roy Goode (Jack O'Connell from Unbroken). Roy takes shelter at a ranch outside of La Belle, New Mexico, a town made up exclusively of women after all of the men died in a mining accident. Daniels was recently rumored alongside Scoot McNairy, but the latter hasn't been confirmed for a role (yet).
There are a few other casting bits, too. Merritt Wever ([pictured] Nurse Jackie, The Walking Dead) will play Mary Agnes, the "brash widow" of the town's late mayor, while Game of Thrones alum Thomas Brodie-Sangster ([pictured] who played greenseer Jojen Reed) will play Whitey Winn, the town deputy: "Devoted to both books and the sheriff and afraid of no one, but still a boy more than a man, he has a lot to learn." Jeremy Bobb (The Knick) rounds out this batch of casting as A.T. Grigg, "the editor of the Santa Fe Dailey Review who has been obsessed for years with writing about the Griffin Gang."
After seeing Daniels as principled news anchor Will McAvoy on The Newsroom, I'm looking forward to watching him terrorize the Old West in this show.

One of the upcoming Netflix projects I'm most excited about is Godless, a western limited series from creator Scott Frank (Out of Sight, Minority Report, The Wolverine, The Lookout) that's being executive produced by Steven Soderbergh. The six-episode series will be set in 1884, and Scott once described the plot like this:
"It is essentially the story of a severely wounded outlaw who ends up in this mining town in New Mexico, where all the able-bodied men have died in the mine. It’s run all by women. He ends up on a ranch just outside of town with the one woman the other women have ostracized and who’s nursing him back to health. Who he realizes are coming after him are his old gang members or fellow outlaws, laying waste to every town they come to, and you realize they’re coming here soon and it’s really that...

Part of the fun in rounding up recent books about (or connected to) cinema is the sheer diversity of releases. This latest collection features a dive into this history of Hollywood legends, lots more Force Awakens, compelling reads from two fascinating critics, texts highlighting the art of Batman v. I'm on a big western kick right now, so when any information about new westerns pops up, it piques my curiosity. But when a project has people like Steven Soderbergh and Scott Frank are involved, it has my full attention. The two worked together on the crime drama Out of Sight before Frank moved on to write Minority Report and The Wolverine, also writing and directing The Lookout and A Walk Among The Tombstones. (Soderbergh's impressive list of credits needs no recap — you know them already.) Now THR reports that the duo is reuniting for a limited series at Netflix called Godless, a western set in 1884 that will span six one-hour episodes. Soderbergh will executive produce, while Frank will write and direct.
While THR and most other outlets don't have any more information on the series than that, Frank actually spoke with Collider about the project many years ago and...

If you need your daily reminder to never give up on your dreams, today's lesson comes from Scott Frank. The writer/director has no shortage of terrific credits to his name ("Minority Report," "Out Of Sight," "The Lookout," "Get Shorty"), but for over a decade, he's been looking to get his 1888-set western "Godless" made, in particular convincing directors to take it on, including Steven Soderbergh. Read More: Review: 'A Walk Among The Tombstones' Starring Liam Neeson And Dan Stevens "He didn't want to shoot people on horses," Frank told us in 2014 about Soderbergh turning down the gig, also adding that Sam Mendes had looked at the project too. "I begged him to direct it. And by the way —that's happened twice now. I wasn't going to direct 'The Lookout.' I had gone through two other directors, and the last one was [David] Fincher. New on DVD/Blu-ray: 'Gone Girl' and 'A Walk Among the Tombstones' Lead a Great Week for Adult Movies
A Walk Among the Tombstones - Universal Studios - Blu-ray Combo Pack and DVD Director: Scott Frank Cast: Liam Neeson, Dan Stevens, David Harbour, Patrick F. McDade, Laura Birn. Full cast + crew This is a banner week for smart movies made for adult audiences. Obviously Gone Girl is the biggest name of the bunch, but don't let its box office status let you overlook A Walk Among the Tombstones, the newest movie from The Lookout writer and director Scott Frank. The cover may make this look like a Taken spin-off, but it's a gripping, artful, restrained pot boiler about a former cop turned unlicensed detective who gets caught up investigating the kidnap and murder of a mobster's wife. Neeson is great in it, and better yet, he's...

On October 10th, one of our very favorite movies of the year expands nationwide, to about 500 screens, after building considerable word-of-mouth and sterling reviews. That movie is "The Guest." And instead of being a stuffy art house movie, which follows a similar rollout (and achieves comparable buzz), "The Guest" is a down-and-dirty genre movie and probably the most fun 100 minutes you'll have in a theater all year.
The movie, from the creators of "You're Next" (writer Simon Barrett and director Adam Wingard), stars Dan Stevens from "Downton Abbey" as David, a war veteran who returns to the home of his fallen brother-in-arms. Presenting himself to the family, he says that he is there to just keep an eye on them and maybe stay until he gets back on his feet. Don’t We Want ’70s-Style Adult Thrillers Like ‘A Walk Among The Tombstones’? A Chat With Scott Frank
Everybody says, bring back those great, gritty 70s adult thrillers. Scott Frank makes one with Liam Neeson in A Walk Among The Tombstones, and not enough people show up to launch it into a franchise. With $13 million in ticket sales so far, it’s $5 million short of what it is needed to trigger more films based on the Matthew Scudder character from Lawrence Block’s mystery novels. I can sit here and wonder if the results would have been better had Universal opened it after Denzel Washington’s turn in The Equalizer this Friday, when appetites will be whetted for challenging adult films and heroes without capes. Or I can point to the squeamishness of some critics who blasted Frank for faithfully adapting a novel about Scudder’s hunt for two serial killers preying on the girlfriends and daughters of drug dealers. It is hard to pretty that up, but one normally smart,...

After an unsuccessful comedy (A Million Ways To Die In The West) and drama (Third Person), Liam Neeson is back in full Taken (that unexpected 2008 hit that made this greying screen vet a full-fledged action hero) mode. There’s a couple of twists for this go-around. He’s not out to rescue a loved one from kidnappers, but is hired to track down somebody that’s grabbing up victims for ransom. Now like Non-stop from early this year, he’s a haunted fella’ who’s battling the bottle (in the former flick he was still imbibing, while now he’s in full program). But he’s not on a plane or dashing around exotic locales. He’s trudging the gritty, and often soggy, mean streets of Manhattan. Interestingly he’s playing a character we’ve seen on screen before, way back in 1986 it was Jeff Bridges in 8 Million Ways To Die.

Before sitting down to watch the new Liam Neeson movie, audiences have been prepped to see the weary-faced action star kicking ass with class, thanks to entertaining flicks like “Taken,” “Non-Stop,” and “The Grey.” But, for every “Taken” there’s a “Taken 2,” and if one year the grizzly Irishman can come out with something as forceful as “The Grey,” the following year “Battleship” can sink people’s opinions once more. It’s just not simple to put a finger on the prospects of a new Neeson film, particularly one directed by screenwriter-turned-director Scott Frank. The only previous feature Frank has directed was the overlooked and underrated “The Lookout,” and he's also got “Get Shorty” and “Out Of Sight” under his writing belt, as well as the less memorable “Flight Of The Phoenix.” With this combined pedigree from the actor and writer-director, the two dominant forces behind “A Walk Among The Tombstones,...

A Walk Among the Tombstones is not just another Taken-esque movie starring Liam Neeson, even if the marketing may suggest as much. Whyc Because they're just body parts. Neeson plays Matt Scudder, an eight years sober ex-detective turned paid-under-the-table, private investigator. Liam Neeson plays a New York detective in A Walk Among The Tombstones. Here's Simon's review of a halfway decent thriller...
It starts well. Liam Neeson, with facial hair, is knocking back his customary two shots and a coffee. It's morning, he's a New York cop, it's 1991, and he's sat in a bar where the light bleaches the windows. Suddenly, he's chasing down bad guys. Things happen. It's all framed really well, the film grabs your attention, and then? Afraid so. It spends the next two hours very gently letting it go.
Post-credits, the action moves forward to 1999, which director Scott Frank signifies time and time again with reference to the Y2K millennium bug. He notes it so many times you end up convinced it must be a brilliant plot device. It isn't. It's a bludgeoning reminder of the year the film is set in, that underpins the many...
