After making two Jumanji movies in just four years’ time, Red One director Jake Kasdan needed a major change of scenery.
So when Dwayne Johnson’s right-hand man Hiram Garcia — and president at his Seven Bucks production company — called with an idea to turn “D.J.” into Callum Drift, Santa Claus’ head of security for the Yuletide action-fantasy-comedy, Kasdan welcomed the intention of treating the North Pole like a governmental operation. The plot kicks into gear when Chris Evans’ roguish jack-of-all-trades, Jack O’Malley, pinpoints the top-secret location of the North Pole for monetary gain, enabling the Christmas witch Gryla (Kiernan Shipka) to kidnap J.K. Simmons’ unconventionally fit Santa.
Johnson’s Drift and the rest of his Secret Service-type organization known as E.L.F. (Enforcement Logistics and Fortification) spring into action by joining forces with Zoe Harlow’s (Lucy Liu) M.O.R.A (Mythological Oversight and Restoration Authority) to recover “Nick” and hopefully save Christmas.

Sony is finally pressing ahead with Jumanji 3 – the fifth film in the Jumanji universe – with a release date in 2026.
It’s been a whopping four years since Jake Kasdan – director of the most recent two Jumanji films – revealed that another film in the series was in the ‘early planning stages.’ That was all the way back in 2020 and as you well know, the years following would be riddled with problems, delays, strikes and shutdowns for Hollywood.
Still, 2019’s Jumanji: The Next Level did leave the door open for another film and it looks like that is finally happening, with the news that Sony is backing one more film in the series. A December 2026 release date booked for the film’s debut. We don’t yet have a title for the project but it has been confirmed that Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan are likely to return.

Ready to play “Jumanji” again?
Sony has dated a third “Jumanji” movie, presumably in the same continuity as the Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson/Jack Black films, for Dec. 11, 2026. No casting or filmmaking details have been confirmed, beyond producers Matt Tolmach, Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia and Jake Kasdan.
This is technically the fifth “Jumanji” film, after Joe Johnston’s 1995 original film and Jon Favreau’s “Zathura” in 2005 (technically a stand-alone spinoff of the original). In 2017, the franchise was revived with “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle,” which changed the original boardgame into a videogame. That was followed by “Jumanji: The Next Level.”
The two newer films — which also starred Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan and Nick Jonas — were directed by Jake Kasdan, whose action Christmas movie “Red One” hits theaters later this year. Most, if not all, of the team behind the two more recent “Jumanji” movies are expected to return.

Jon Favreau swore off directing Marvel Cinematic Universe movies after "Iron Man 2," but Kevin Feige might want to consider whether it's worth trying to change his mind. Marvel Studios hasn't been having the best time in the past couple of years, what with a seemingly-constant barrage of MCU content making everyone uninterested in the superhero genre. Up until the studio's recent decision to dial back the amount of media it was putting out, we had too much of the MCU and it was getting ridiculous. But back in 2008, when Favreau was hired to direct the inaugural film in this now-gargantuan franchise, things looked very different.
"Iron Man" became the unlikely superhero film that changed Hollywood forever, establishing what would become the highest-grossing blockbuster franchise in cinema history. Without Favreau at the helm, however, there's every reason to think the McU's start wouldn't have been quite so auspicious. Not only...

Have you ever danced with vampires in the pale moonlight? No? Well, neither have most of us, but we’ve all vicariously tasted the forbidden fruit of Tinseltown romance through the saga of Twilight actors Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart.
Alas, their fairytale romance wasn’t meant for eternity, and in 2013, it came to an end, leaving fans with a bittersweet aftertaste. The on-screen chemistry that riveted audiences didn’t just earn them the title of the talk of the town; it also led them to bag the Best Kiss award in 2011 at the MTV Movie Award.

Chris Van Allsberg's picture book "Jumanji" was first published in 1981, and it quickly became a staple in elementary schools and libraries, read widely and joyously by several generations of kids. The book won a Caldecott medal, and Allsberg would go on to write other children's classics like "The Z Was Zapped," "The Polar Express," and the "Jumanji" sequel "Zathura."
The premise is fun: Two kids, bored at home, find a jungle-adventure-themed board game called Jumanji in their attic. When they play it, however, they find that the dictated events of the game manifest in their house. When the game cards tell them they've run into chimpanzees, chimpanzees appear in their kitchen, and more and more animals begin wreaking havoc as the game progresses. It's only when the game ends that the mayhem ceases.

Can you picture the iconic Central Perk couch without the master of sarcasm, Matthew Perry, cracking a witty repartee as Chandler Bing? It’s like imagining a ship without its compass or a sky devoid of stars—unfathomable to those who spent most of their 90s watching the quirky tales of Friends.
And for those who were engrossed in the hilarious misadventures of Rachel, Ross, Monica, Phoebe, Chandler, and Joey, the tragic death of Perry last year was a devastating blow. It was through Chandler that Friends journeyed beyond laughter, delving into the bittersweet symphony of finding one’s footing in the restless dance of adulthood.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s recent Jumanji films have reignited excitement for the franchise, but fans are confused about the title of the next installment. The debate centers on whether it should be called Jumanji 3 or Jumanji 5.
Robin Williams, Bradley Pierce, and Kirsten Dunst in Jumanji
The confusion stems from how the Jumanji franchise has changed over time. There’s the original movie with Robin Williams and the newer reboot series with The Great One.
Suggested“He has Jumanji 5 coming out”: One Hollywood Actor Makes Even Joe Rogan Feel Lazy and It’s Not Dwayne Johnson
So, fans are unsure if the next movie follows the original story, making it Jumanji 3, or if it’s part of the reboot series, which would make it Jumanji 5. Plus, there’s also confusion about whether Jumanji 4 would be happening or not.

He lost a role in one major franchise, but gained another. In a recent interview, Josh Hutcherson claims he was almost cast as Kevin McCallister in one of the Home Alone movies.
“I was probably 11, I think, when I auditioned for it,” the 31-year-old actor recalled in an interview at BuzzFeed HQ. “It got down to me and the other guy. That was the first time that I tasted rejection, so that was really hard.”
It would have been a role in one of the later films in the series, following the first two films headlined by Macaulay Culkin. Alex D. Linz starred in 1997’s Home Alone 3, and three other movies followed in the series with different casts.
Hutcherson’s child actor career began with parts on ER and in the TV movie House Blend. Then he was in the 2007 fantasy film Bridge to Terabithia, followd by Journey to the Center of the Earth...

The original picture book "Jumanji," written and illustrated by Chris Van Allsburg, was rather simple. A pair of kids find a mysterious boxed board game at a park and take it home to play it. The game, "Jumanji," is a jungle-themed adventure that warns players not to begin unless they intend to finish. They find that playing the game manifests jungle animals and bad weather in their home, and soon the house has been trashed by rhinos and monsoons. When they finish the game, all the damage is magically undone. "Jumanji" was published in 1981, and was a library standard for a decade.
In 1995, Joe Johnston directed a feature film adaptation that strayed dramatically from the picture book. Using then-cutting-edge CGI, "Jumanji" was about a child who was sucked into an alternate jungle dimension in 1969, and left there for decades because his "Jumanji" partner abandoned the game. In the present, two...

I am an old man. I'm not particularly old for, like, the Earth as Craig Robinson might say, but I'm just about entering my grandpa era in terms of the online culture. My time writing about movies online began in the mid-'90s while I was still in high school and that gave me a front row seat to the rise of the Marvel Cinematic Universe empire, so I remember that era very well.
When that first MCU end credits scene hit in "Iron Man," it was a mind-blower for many reasons. We'd never seen anything like that in blockbuster filmmaking. The shared universe idea is commonplace now, but back then the idea that Marvel could be building up to an "Avengers" crossover movie was so exciting.
However, for readers of movie rumors, that reveal was ... well, it was spoiled for them by the website I wrote for, Ain't It Cool News.

Depending on how you feel in the age of way too much Marvel Cinematic Universe, 2008 was either the beginning of an important shift in cinema history or the cause of all our modern troubles. That's because it was the year the first MCU movie, "Iron Man," debuted and promptly changed Hollywood forever. Back then, Marvel Studios was an independent company on a mission to establish a shared on-screen universe that would turn its lesser-known heroes into the cultural icons they now are.
That mission kicked off with "Iron Man," which, thanks to some inspired casting that saw Robert Downey Jr. play Tony Stark/Iron Man (winning the role over Timothy Olyphant), proved to be a big hit. Downey was the perfect man for the job, bringing so much charisma to the part that it even radiated through that all-enveloping body armor. If you were a kid or teen in the 2000s, it's likely that you watched at least one movie featuring Josh Hutcherson, and it's also likely that you had a favorite movie with him in it. Hutcherson began acting in the early 2000s and had minor roles in a variety of TV shows before making his film debut in 2003's "American Splendor." From there, Hutcherson was launched into stardom and starred in a number of popular films throughout the decade, including "Kicking & Screaming," "Zathura: A Space Adventure," and "Journey to the Center of the Earth." By the 2010s, Hutcherson took on more mature roles and arguably landed his most popular role as Peeta Mellark in "The Hunger Games," which he would reprise for the remaining three movies in the beloved film series.

When Josh Hutcherson was cast in "Five Nights at Freddy's," it just made sense. Director and co-writer Emma Tammi's film adaptation of the lore-heavy hit horror video game franchise has the actor playing Mike Schmidt, an Average Joe who takes a job as the night security guard at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, unaware of that tiny issue where the entertainment center's animatronic mascots come to life and begin massacring people after midnight. Mike himself is the type of archetypical hero Hutcherson is best known for portraying; a humble everyman who must rise to the occasion in the face of extraordinary circumstances.
In a way, Hutcherson's unlikely transformation into one of this century's major genre movie and TV actors began with his first feature film, "American Splendor." One of the best comic book adaptations ever made, the film carries over the meta-narrative and autobiographical elements of Harvey Pekar's source material,...

According to various online biographies, director Jon Favreau graduated high school in 1984 and attended Queens College for only three years before dropping out in 1987. As he recently said on an episode of the "Smartless" podcast, he was immediately offered a high-paying job at the investment firm Bear Stearns, hooked up with the gig by a friend's dad. Given Favreau's age, this would definitely be considered "selling out" at the time. The easily earned, large-salary job was once something young aspiring artists eschewed, preferring a hard-earned, low-money career in the arts. Favreau was bitten by the acting bug at a young age and always had his sights turned on performance.
After about a year at Bear Stearns, Favreau quit. It seems he just barely missed Black Monday. It also seemed that he hated it. After another brief try at college, Favreau dropped out again, this time for good, and drove out...

The Man Behind ‘Mandalorian’: Jon Favreau Talks Season 3, ‘Skeleton Crew’ and His Walk of Fame Honor
At the center of the two biggest pop culture empires of this generation, the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the “Star Wars” franchise, lies one architect who helped launch them into modern greatness: Jon Favreau.
Fifteen years ago, the actor-turned-filmmaker directed a film about a B-list superhero with a not-yet-bankable movie star when comic-book films were more flukes than surefire hits. That movie turned out to be “Iron Man,” starring Robert Downey Jr. (with Favreau also playing his right-hand man Happy Hogan) and, after dozens of spinoffs, theme-park rides and box office records, the rest is comic-book history.
Recently, Favreau has traded his Repulsor gloves for lightsabers. He’s charting the future of “Star Wars” across several TV series, beginning with “The Mandalorian,” the flagship Disney+ show that debuted on Day 1 of the streamer. The Western-themed “Star Wars” series premieres its third season on March 1, and it’s already spawned several...

Way before Vanessa Burghardt was cast in “Cha Cha Real Smooth,” movies played an extremely important role in her life. “I didn’t really have any friends in school and so movies became the way that I came to understand social situations and other people and it was kind of the way I fulfilled the socialization I wasn’t getting. They were really important to me,” she tells Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above).
She even remembers one of the earliest performances she saw that made her want to explore becoming an actress. “I remember seeing, weirdly, Kristen Stewart in ‘Zathura.’ That was the first time where I kind of realized what the idea of acting was. Then I saw the gag reel for ‘The Avengers’ and I looked at the behind the scenes pictures and I knew that I wanted to be a part of it forever.

If you’ve been waiting to watch Christopher Nolan’s confounding sci-fi thriller “Tenet,” now is the time to finally get to it on your HBO Max watchlist. Nolan’s latest film is one of many movies leaving HBO Max in July, the full list of which you can read below.
Also leaving HBO and HBO Max this month is another Nolan classic, “Inception,” Baz Luhrmann’s “The Great Gatsby,” as well as two rom-com favorites “Bridget Jones’s Diary” and “You’ve Got Mail.”
If you’re looking to prioritize some selections, “American Gigolo” was Richard Gere’s break-out role — and it would be a good time to watch ahead of the upcoming TV series starring Jon Bernthal.

There are diverse streaming releases slates and then there is Hulu’s list of new releases for May 2022. There are no big franchises here, no big themes – just a whole bunch of original and library titles for everyone to enjoy.
Hulu’s major original releases in May come in the middle of the month. Candy premieres on May 9 and stars Jessica Biel as your friendly neighborhood axe murderer. If that sounds a bit outlandish, bear in mind that this limited series is based on the real life story of Candy Montgomery and her victim, the tragically named Betty Gore. On May 15, Hulu will play host to Conversations with Friends. This is the latest adaptation of the works of Sally Rooney. After the breakaway success of Normal People, Hulu is undoubtedly hoping for more lightning in a bottle.

With movie theaters fully back up and running, HBO Max no longer has any major film releases to point to with its list of new releases for May 2022. That’s alright though as the streamer is leaning into the HBO side of its branding to offer up some fun TV releases.
The biggest HBO Max original this month is undoubtedly the return of Hacks on May 12. The first season of this comedy starred Jean Smart as a venerated Vegas comedy and Hannah Einbinder as her new millennial assistant. The first batch of episodes was excellent and even won an Emmy or two for its troubles and now season 2 will look to keep up the good vibes.
Premiering on May 15, is The Time Traveler’s Wife. This series adaptation of the 2003 novel (which in turn became a a 2009 movie) keeps up with two star-crossed lovers who can never quite make the timing work…...

Things don’t always work out for child actors in Hollywood. But this year’s Oscar nominations showed three promising paths to grown-up success. Kristen Stewart (“Spencer”), Kirsten Dunst (“The Power of the Dog”), and Kodi Smit-McPhee (also “Power of the Dog”) earned their first nominations this year after long careers that started before any of them could legally drive.
It’s certainly not unheard of for child stars to become Oscar nominees or winners as adults. There are examples going as far back as Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland, who made names for themselves as children and earned multiple Oscar noms as adults, and Rooney ended up winning an Honorary Oscar in 1983 for his lifetime achievements. Jodie Foster earned her first Oscar nomination for “Taxi Driver” (1976) at age 14 before growing up to win two Best Actress trophies for “The Accused” (1988) and “The Silence of the Lambs” (1991). February may be the shortest month, but that doesn’t mean streaming services can ignore their duty to entertain us at all times. In that mission, Netflix is making a decent effort in February 2021. This isn’t the most jam-packed month the major streamer has trotted out just yet but there are plenty of new originals to get the job done.
Netflix has a few original series of note this month. The party begins with Kid Cosmic on Feb. 2. This animated series is a comic-tinged adventure from Craig McCracken, creator of the Powerpuff Girls. 1995’s Jumanji is widely regarded as a classic family adventure movie. On its original release, it was one of the highest-grossing films of the year and went on to spawn a cartoon show, a semi-sequel in Zathura: A Space Adventure and the recent Welcome to the Jungle and The Next Level. And ever since the tragic death of star Robin Williams in 2014, its stature has risen even more, with those that grew up with the pic introducing both it and the actor to their own children.
Bradley Pierce, who played the young Peter Shepherd in the film, recently spoke to People Magazine about his time working on the project and revealed a very touching moment where Williams looked out for the child stars in the cast. Netflix has a whole lot of spooks up its sleeve for the month of October.
From Adam Sandler’s “Hubie Halloween” (Oct. 7) to the “Hill House” follow-up “The Haunting of Bly Manor” (Oct. 9), the Halloween-themed goodness is in high supply next month. Watch Netflix’s little teaser reel above.
If you want a gory horror film, try “Nobody Sleeps in the Woods Tonight” (Oct. 28). Other new creepy flicks include “His House” (Oct. 30) “Cadaver” (Oct. 22) and Spanish-language film “The Day of the Lord” (Oct. 30).
For a younger audience, there’s “Vampires vs. the Bronx” (Oct. 2) and “The Babysitter’s Guide to Monster Hunting” (Oct. 15).
In terms of TV, get ready for Volume 2 of Netflix’s “Unsolved Mysteries” reboot series (Oct. 19), and also check out Season 1 of CBS’ “Evil” (Oct. 1) about a forensic psychologist who comes face to face with evidence that challenges her disbelief in supernatural phenomena.

Next month, Netflix is rolling out a ton of great new Halloween-themed content, including a bunch of must-see originals like The Haunting of Bly Manor, A Babysitter’s Guide to Monster Hunting and Rebecca. Unfortunately, though, it’s also losing a lot of horror films in October that would’ve made for perfect seasonal viewing.
On October 2nd, both Cult of Chucky – the last Chucky flick before the reboot – and Truth or Dare – that’s the 2017 TV movie, not the 2018 Blumhouse production – are being removed from Netflix’s library. The bulk of the horror titles leaving in October are, ironically, being removed on October 31st, though. So, if you’re hoping to do an Underworld marathon this Halloween or rewatch classics like Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow or The Silence of the Lambs, make sure you don’t leave it until the day itself.

So, if you’re hoping to do an Underworld marathon this Halloween or rewatch classics like Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow or The Silence of the Lambs, make sure you don’t leave it until the day itself.

Netflix added an enormous haul of movies on this first day of September, catering for all tastes. There’s musicals, sci-fi flicks, family films and much more. And if you’re in the mood for something a bit more frightening, Netflix has got you covered, too. The streaming giant added four horror pics from across the decades this Tuesday to kick off the month before Halloween with some scares. Let’s go through them alphabetically.
First of all, we have 1997’s Anaconda, the cult classic creature feature starring Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube and Jon Voight. It follows a documentary film crew in the Amazon rainforest who encounter an embittered snake hunter and get caught up in his quest to kill a gigantic anaconda. It spawned a bunch of sequels, the last of which was 2015’s crossover Lake Placid Vs. Anaconda, and a reboot was announced to be on the way in January,...

September marks the start of the traditional TV season. For many networks and cable channels, however, this will be an usual season with the coronavirus pandemic halting production leaving behind paltry fall lineups. Over on Netflix, however, things continue to operate at high capacity.
Netflix is rolling out quite a few original series and movies for its new releases in September 2020. The Hillary Swank-starring space drama Away premieres on September 4. That is followed by a whole host of intriguing concepts including Julie and the Phantoms (Sept. 10), Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous (Sept. 18), and even the Nurse Ratched origin story series called Ratched (Sept. 18).
The film side of things is just as packed. Romantic comedy Love, Guaranteed premieres on Sept. 3, Charlie Kaufman’s latest effort I’m Thinking of Ending Things arrives on Sept. 4, and the Tom Holland-starring thriller The Devil All the Time bows on Sept. 16. That’s not even to mention Enola Holmes on Sept.

What titles are coming to Netflix in September 2020? I’m glad you asked. I mean, you personally may not have asked, but someone probably did. Somewhere. Moving on.
Earlier today, the streaming site announced the full list of new movies/TV shows headed to the platform next month and it’s a doozy, comprising over 100 titles. A good chunk of those are Netflix Originals, too, and overall, there’s a ton of exciting stuff on the way.

There’s been so much mythology surrounding “The Mandalorian’s” Baby Yoda (The Child), thanks to co-star Werner Herzog’s outspoken support of the puppet, that it’s hard to determine what’s practical or CG about its performance. The truth is, the 50-year-old, 16-inch infant companion to bounty hunter Mando (Pedro Pascal) was always intended to be a hybrid character, though the original plan was to lean more heavily on animation whenever possible.
That is, until creator Jon Favreau and the rest of the team witnessed the full extent of the puppet’s charm and capabilities early on during the shooting of Season 1. “Initially, the puppet was going to be in a supporting role, and it was going to be a CG character,” said John Rosengrant, co-founder and special effects supervisor at Legacy Effects.
“We did a proof of concept three weeks before shooting, and even once we started shooting,...

Kevin Hart, Dwayne Johnson, Karen Gillan, and Jack Black are thrown into another crazy adventure in the first trailer for Sony Pictures’ “Jumanji: The Next Level.” The film is the sequel to 2017’s “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle,” a surprise Christmas smash hit that went on to earn $404 million in the U.S. and a huge $964 million worldwide. The film set a domestic record for Sony and passed “Spider-Man” to become the studio’s highest-grossing U.S. release (unadjusted for inflation), which means the pressure is on for “The Next Level” to deliver the box office goods this upcoming holiday season.
In “The Next Level,” Hart, Johnson, Gillan, and Black return as their video game avatars while Ser’Darius Blain, Alex Wolff, Morgan Turner, and Madison Iseman once again play their original real-world counterparts. Nick Jonas and Colin Hanks are back as well, while new additions to the “Jumanji” franchise include Awkwafina,...

Hulu has released its list of content arriving at the streaming service this June, as well as everything that will no longer be available to watch there after June 30.
At the top of the must-watch list is season three of Hulu Original “The Handmaid’s Tale,” which was notably pushed back to a June premiere date in order to ensure it would “maintain the quality it has,” Craig Erwich, Hulu’s Senior Vice President of Originals, said at the Television Critics Association (TCA) press tour in February. The first three episodes of the new season premiere on Hulu June 5, after which new episodes will be released every Wednesday.
Another Hulu Original of note is “The Weekly” series from The New York Times, coming June 3. Each half-hour episode will feature a Times journalist investigating one of today’s most pressing issues, with new issues being explored each week.
