Three film and television studios that center Black stories are coming together to produce a slate of hip-hop biopics — and they’ve announced that Queen Latifah’s will be first. Neither a writer nor director has been announced yet, but Queen Latifah herself will be one of the producers through her company, Flavor Unit Entertainment. Will Smith’s Westbrook Studios and Jesse Collins’ Jesse Collins Entertainment are also on board for Latifah’s biopic.

A feature about the life of Queen Latifah is in the works as the first in a slate of independently financed hip-hop biopics hailing from Flavor Unit Entertainment, Westbrook Studios and Jesse Collins Entertainment.

The film will follow the ascension of Latifah as the performer became a rapper, singer and actress who has won Emmy, Grammy and Golden Globe awards. HarbourView Equity Partners is financing this film, in addition to future biopics that also will spotlight iconic hip-hop performers.

It has not yet been announced who will be writing or directing the Latifah project.

Producers for the film include Latifah and Shakim Compere for Flavor Unit Entertainment, Will Smith and Miguel Melendez for Westbrook Studios, and Jesse Collins and Dionne Harmon for Jesse Collins Entertainment. The latter company is behind the miniseries The New Edition Story and The Bobby Brown Story that both aired on BET.

Back in May, Max added programming from TLC, HGTV and Food Network. That means Discovery’s popular Shark Week will be available to stream when it kicks off on July 23, with programming to be announced soon.

For fans of unscripted series, Season 3 or “90 Day Fiancé: Love in Paradise: Pillow Talk” (July 4) and Season 5 of “90 Day Fiancé: The Other Way” (July 10) are both streaming, as well as the series premiere of “90 Day Fiancé: UK.”

The two big ticket items this month are of the superhero variety. My Adventures with Superman arrives to Max on July 7 after making its Adult Swim premiere the night before. The end of the month sees Harley Quinn season 4 making its long-awaited debut on July 27. Other original TV titles of note are the Steven Soderbergh-directed Full Circle (July 13) and the third and final season of How To With John Wilson on July 28.

On the movie side of things, documentary Glitch: The Rise and Fall of HQ Trivia premieres on July 20. Before that on July 13 is both a fresh reboot of filmmaking competition Project Greenlight and the movie that came of it, Gray Matter. The original Max series “Full Circle” debuts on July 13. Directed by Steven Soderbergh, the new drama investigates a kidnapping gone wrong in New York, revealing the secrets and lies of multiple characters. Or as the trailer warns: “Everything is connected.” The six-episode limited series stars Zazie Beetz, Claire Danes, Jim Gaffigan, Jharrel Jerome, Timothy Olyphant, and Dennis Quaid.

The four-part documentary “Last Call: When A Serial Killer Stalked Queer New York” is set in the early 1990s as the AIDS crisis worsens. The media’s distorted coverage of the gay victims, coupled with the homophobic biases of the criminal justice system, undermine the investigation. The docuseries — which premieres on Max on July 9 — illustrates how the LGBTQ+ community fought to solve the murders and demand attention for those murdered.

Amazon Studios has identified a batch of titles from its $8.45 billion acquisition of MGM that the company plans to develop into TV or film projects, including “Robocop,” “Stargate” “Legally Blonde,” “Fame,” Barbershop,” “The Magnificent Seven,” “Pink Panther” and “The Thomas Crown Affair.”

A source familiar with the matter confirmed to TheWrap that the company is in active early conversations for a “Legally Blonde” movie and potential TV series. Additionally, Amazon has similar plans for “Stargate” under consideration, with a movie expected to go first. “Robocop” is also being discussed for film and TV, with a TV series potentially going first.

The source added that Amazon Studios is actively developing TV series based on “Fame,” “Barbershop” and “The Magnificent Seven,” as well as discussing “Thomas Crown Affair” movie and “Pink Panther” movie, which could be animated. A “Poltergeist” project is also under consideration.

CBS is sticking with “The Talk” talent to host this year’s Daytime Emmy Awards, but with a twist: This year, Sheryl Underwood will handle solo duties. The Eye network announced on Tuesday that Underwood will host the 48th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards, which airs on Friday, June 25 at 8 p.m. Et on CBS, as well as streaming live on Paramount Plus.

This is the fifth time that Underwood has hosted the show; in the past, she has done it with her “The Talk” colleagues. Written by Vance, the pilot centers on Paris Johnson, played by Danielle Jalade (Yes Day), a 13-year-old girl who has spent most of her life roller-skating.

Exclusive: Treehouse Pictures has set in motion what it’s describing as a diverse remake of 1991 coming-of-age comedy, Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead, which is being written by Chuck Hayward with Bille Woodruff attached to direct. Hayward’s take is a present-day retelling centered on a black family.

Treehouse’s Justin Nappi and Juliet Berman are producing along with Oren Segal. Executive producers are Michael Phillips — also an Ep on the original — Juliana Maio and Tova Laiter.

The 1991 film, which was directed by Stephen Herek, starred Christina Applegate, Joanna Cassidy and Josh Charles. Queen Latifah is set to star in a potential reboot of the TV series “The Equalizer” at CBS.

The new series has received a pilot production commitment at the broadcaster. It is described a reimagining of the classic series in which Queen Latifah portrays an enigmatic figure who uses her extensive skills to help those with nowhere else to turn.

The original series starred Edward Woodward and ran for four seasons on CBS between 1985 and 1989. It was co-created by Richard Lindheim and Michael Sloan. It was then adapted into two feature films starring Denzel Washington in the title role, with the first debuting in 2014 and the second in 2018.

When Queen Latifah walked across the stage at her Tribeca Film Festival talk on Friday, moderator and director Dee Rees (“Mudbound”) declared “all hail the Queen.” Looking at Latifah’s career, she’s certainly earned the praise.

The actress, musician, entrepreneur, and author started out in hip-hop, a notoriously “misogynistic” industry, she said. When she came onto the scene in the ‘80s and made a name for herself despite male domination, rappers like Ice-t and Big Daddy Kane took notice and doled out respect.

“At the end of the day, it’s about women feeling good about themselves from the inside out,” Latifah said. “You want to carry yourself with an attitude that uplifts. The Oscar-nominated and Emmy-winning actor-musician-producer is coming off Universal’s big hit comedy Girls Trip, which made more than $140 million worldwide; the cast has a deal to return for a sequel but no greenlight yet from the studio.

Flavor Unit, founded by Latifah and business partner Shakim Compere, has produced award-winning films including Beauty Shop, The Perfect Holiday, Just Wright and Bessie, as well as HBO’s Life Support. More recently, Latifah and Compere produced The Real Mvp: The Wanda Pratt Story, The Best Place to Be, Curvy Style with Timothy Snell, The Perfect Match and The Rap Game.

It is a ripped from the headlines story from the 1920s with many meaty roles in what was a roller coaster ride about money, love, racism and betrayal.

The project is now being produced for the big screen by Mark and Christine Holder (who found the story), Octavia Spencer, Queen Latifah and Shakim Compere’s Flavor Unit Entertainment and Dave Broome (The Day I Met El Chapo). The Kingsolving manuscript, repped by Trident, is going out to publishers this summer.

A new venture fund focused on African-American content has launched and teamed with its first partner, Queen Latifah’s Flavor Unit Entertainment.

The Essence Creators and Makers Fund has a $20 million endowment from Essence Ventures, the parent company of Essence Communications. The fund will support and partner with creators and makers of color in an effort to mitigate the barriers faced in securing financing for the development and production of projects.

The fund will create and finance film, television, digital and documentary-style content that reflects the lives and experiences of women of color. It will also seek to collaborate with content creators globally focused on Essence’s core audience of black women, with the content produced encompassing themes that relate and connect across audiences.

Film, TV and video director Bille Woodruff has signed a two-year overall deal with 20th Century Fox Television.

Known for his distinct visual style and dynamic storytelling, Woodruff began his relationship with the studio directing multiple episodes of Empire and Star, which led to the deal.

“Bille is a fantastic director who has done spectacular work on episodes of both Empire and Star for us, and this deal is about continuing that relationship on an exclusive basis,” said Jonnie Davis, President of Creative Affairs at Tcftv. “We’ll continue to assign him episodes of our current series and potentially have him direct and produce series and pilots down the road.”

Woodruff’s other TV credits include the CW’s Black Lightning, Freeform’s Shadowhunters, TNT’s Claws, Bet’s The Game and VH1’s Hit The Floor.

Lifetime’s new Michael Jackson biopic, “Searching for Neverland” has released its first trailer, and it’s everything you might expect from a Lifetime Original movie about Michael Jackson.

The source material for the project is a book by Motown Records titan Berry Gordy, called “Remember the Time: Protecting Michael Jackson in His Final Days.” The script is by “Beauty Shop” writer Elizabeth Hunter, and Dianne Houston (“Runaway Island”) is directing. Lifetime announced the project had been given the green light during a TCA presentation in January, Shadow and Act reports. The story will be told from the perspective of Jackson’s bodyguards, Bill Whitfield and Javon Beard, and will also explore his relationship with his children, Prince, Blanket, and Paris.

Hulu has announced the new titles that will be available to stream on the platform in May. Next month will see the streaming release of Oscar-nominated films such as Debra Granik’s 2010 drama “Winter’s Bone,” starring Jennifer Lawrence, and Tim Burton’s 2003 fantasy drama “Big Fish.”

2000’s Bring It On is a very odd duck.

It’s not that the film is particularly innovative about how it spins its narrative – there’s a pretty standard set of beats in place for a sports movie – but traditionally, sports movies don’t tend to have a predominantly female cast (and even something like A League Of Their Own was somewhat led by Tom Hanks). Not only that, it’s a movie with a predominately female cast that isn’t entirely focused on love or romance.

HBO’s well-received limited series “The Night Of” will wrap up its eight-part whodunnit in late August. Steve Zaillian’s gritty drama, which examines a man’s fate after he wakes up charged with the murder of a relative stranger, debuted to rave reviews from critics and audiences. IndieWire’s Ben Travers writes, “By actively engaging on personal and political levels, Zaillian sucks the viewer into a nightmare scenario wholly dependent on two verdicts: first, whether or not Naz is found guilty, but also if he really did it.” Here’s hoping the series can maintain its slow burn thrills all the way to the end.

New York (AP) -- The Walt Disney Co.'s "The Jungle Book" opened with $103.6 million in North America, making it one of the biggest April debuts ever at the box office and continuing the studio's streak of unearthing live-action riches buried in its animated classics.

Jon Favreau's update of Disney's 1967 animated version of Rudyard Kipling's book tells the tale of Mowgli with computer-generated imagery and big-screen bombast. A sizable 42 percent of the film's domestic sales came from 3-D and premium-format screens.

"The Jungle Book" is just the latest of Disney's string of live-action remakes of classic cartoons ("Cinderella," ''Alice in Wonderland," ''Maleficent"), most of which have fared well at the box office. More plundering of the Disney library is in the works: "Cruella De Ville" and "Peter Pan" are in development; "Beauty and the Beast" is scheduled for next March.

Disney's The Jungle Book delivers the third $100+ million opener of 2016, two more than 2015 had at this point in the year and Captain America: Civil War is just around the corner. The weekend's two other new wide releases saw WB and MGM's Barbershop: The Next Cut finish second while Lionsgate's Criminal settled for a sixth place finish. Altogether, the weekend top twelve finished up 50.2% compared to last year and up 76.6% from last weekend. With an estimated $103.5 million opening, The Jungle Book will be the talk of the town for the next couple weeks. It's an opening number that exceeds all expectations despite the pre-release buzz. Heading into the weekend the film had an impressive 95% rating at RottenTomatoes, a rating that was reflected in audience opinion as opening day moviegoers rewarded it with an "A" CinemaScore. The result is the second largest April opening weekend of all-time behind only last year's Furious 7.

This film franchise zeros in on something that many small towns and big cities (really the neighborhoods in said cities) share: mainly a place where everyone seems to gather. Some place aside from the obvious schools, city halls, and churches (or synagogues). It’s actually a business. There’s a popular corner diner, maybe a bar or pub, perhaps a locally owned clothing store. Well, for this neighborhood in the south side of Chicago it’s the hair salon known to moviegoers thanks to 2002’s Barbershop. That modest little “slice of life” flick was popular that it inspired a sequel two years later (Barbershop 2: Back In Business). The following year saw a spin-off (Beauty Shop) and a TV series on premium cable channel Showtime. The scissors and shavers have been silenced for almost a dozen years, but now movie goers have another appointment with Calvin and his crew for Barbershop: The Next Cut.

Last weekend the top twelve at the domestic box office was down 24.3% when compared to last year. In fact, it was the first time since 2008 that the top twelve films at the box office failed to top $100 million in the 15th weekend of the year. This weekend won't have any such issues with Disney's The Jungle Book looking to become one of the top five April openings of all-time. Additionally, Warners' Barbershop: The Next Cut should deliver the largest opening that franchise has seen while Lionsgate's Criminal will likely finish just outside the top five. Disney has tapped into something special when it comes to adapting some of their most iconic animated movies into live action features in recent years. Last year's Cinderella opened with $67.8 million in mid-March, the year before Maleficent opened with $69.4 million and, in 2010, Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland opened with an astonishing $116.1 million before grossing over $1 billion worldwide.

With its combination of workplace sitcom and social activism, “Barbershop: The Next Cut” feels more like a binge-viewing of multiple episodes of a TV series than a movie, but even on that level, it’s a show worth watching. Set in a combination barber shop/beauty salon in Chicago’s South Side, the titular venue’s status as a neighborhood sounding post and community meeting place provides context for the film’s speechier moments about gun violence and self-sufficiency, while the colliding of familiar comedic characters – this is the third “Barbershop” movie, fourth if you count the “Beauty Shop” spinoff – brings the laughs.

Broad Green Pictures producing with Straight Outta Compton’s Matt Alvarez.

Mister Smith Entertainment is to commence pre-sales on Charles Stone’s dance comedy Ain’t No Half Steppin’ at the European Film Market (Feb 11-19).

Produced by Broad Green Pictures, the film centres on a college girl who agrees to teach the art of ‘stepping’ – an African American percussive dance – to a group of sorority girls in order to improve her chances of getting into law school.

Broad Green Pictures announced the project in November as part of a production deal with Straight Outta Compton producer Matt Alvarez.

Alvarez will produce alongside Lena Waithe (Dear White People) and Benjamin Cory Jones (Hand Of God). Chuck Hayward (Beauty Shop) wrote the script. Choreographer Aakomon Jones (Pitch Perfect) will oversee the dance sequences.

Casting is underway, with principal photography scheduled to begin in April or May.

Broad Green Pictures will distribute the film theatrically in the Us.

Never underestimate Ice Cube. He's turned four movies — Friday, Barbershop, Are We There Yet?, and Ride Along — into multi-film franchises, and now he's back with a third movie set in the Barbershop universe (actually, it's technically the fourth: Queen Latifah's Beauty Shop was a spin-off set in Atlanta). This time, the movie seems to take on the notion of the violence in Chicago head-on, while also combining the male-dominated barbershop with the female-centric salon to form a central hub for the community's characters to interact.
