Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: What better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? This week […]

A thyroid operation every ten years, plus regular libations of an eerie green liquid, has allowed Anton Diffring to live over a hundred years without looking a year over forty. Hammer’s medical horror show features Christopher Lee, Hazel Court and sumptuous cinematography, but not a whole lot of surprises.

Disney animation continues its streak of Oscar domination: Zootopia, co-directed by Byron Howard and Rich Moore, scooped up Best Animated Film from the Academy on Sunday. Producer Clark Spencer shared in the win.
“We are so grateful to the audiences all over the world who embraced this story of tolerance being more powerful than the fear of the other,” said Moore from the stage.
The inclusive sentiment echoed that of presenter Gael García Bernal, who delivered what appeared to be a comment on President Donald Trump’s proposed wall on the Mexican boarder.

Hey, remember three episodes ago when Ghost Rider was a thing on Marvel’s Agents Of Shield? Yeah, not so much anymore.
But what this week’s instalment lacks in demonic street racers makes up for in old school Shield goodness as the Lmd saga continues.
Some nice story work is done this week with Daisy Johnson as she continues her transformation from agent on the run to bona fide super hero. As Daisy stands there during a press conference and receives praise from Director Jeff Mace, it’s hard to not think about when we first met Daisy. She has certainly come a long way from...

Mirzya
Starring Harshvardhan Kapoor, Saiyami Kher
Directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra
Rating: **** ½
Interestingly and curiously—and these are feelings that propped up repeatedly as I watched the maverick movie making magician Mehra’s fifth directorial pilgrimage into the mysteries of cinema—Mirzya doesn’t mention its debut making lead pair as ‘Introducing’…
That’s because continuity and renewal are critical to Mehra’s vision of cinema. He moves, no he glides, from one era to another without punctuation marks in pursuit of that uncorrupted core of humanism which makes life worth living even in the worst of times (and honestly, it can’t get any worse than now, can it?).
Mirzya is a very simple yet extremely layered love legend. The lovers here face what lovers everywhere have faced since love was discovered in the human heart. As in Rang De Basanti, Mehra creates two level of storytelling, one that...

Clothes and web series: two things that definitely don’t make themselves. At this point, Jessie Katz and Lindsey Goodman know a little bit about both.
After meeting while working in PR for fashion industry, the two have used their inside-brand experiences to help write, produce and launch their web series “Labeled.” After releasing the first three episodes in mid-December of last year, Katz and Goodman turned to Kickstarter to raise funds for rounding out the show’s freshman season.
Following a successful campaign, “Labeled” was selected by Indiewire readers as May’s Project of the Month. Next up for the show is production on an additional seven episodes to dig into the unseen careers and experiences of the individuals who help keep some of the fashion business’ biggest names afloat.
The show’s co-creators chatted with us via email about the process of bringing all of these stories to fruition.

Read More: 'Goodnight Mommy' Directors on the Value of Violence and How Horror Should Be 'Challenging' "Goodnight Mommy," directed by Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz, is representing Austria in the competition for Best Foreign Language Film in the Academy Awards. The eerily elegant thriller about two boys whose mother's face is wrapped in mysterious bandages is heir to a little-known tradition of Austrian exploitation films. This fall, the Viennale resurrected those movies, many of which have been buried in shame for decades. David D'Arcy was there, and offers this guide. Between two sacred places – the Vienna Opera and St. Steven’s Cathedral – profane Austrian cinema is rising from the crypt of oblivion. A restored theater with red velvet interiors was the showplace at the annual Viennale for In Flesh and Blood, a program of rare screenings of Austrian exploitation movies. Most of the films disappeared after being condemned, discredited, demonized,...

Throughout the history of cinema there are countless adaptations of Edgar Allan Poe’s work, from D. W. Griffith’s early take on The Sealed Room through Roger Corman’s series of lo-fi refittings of the 60s up to last year’s attempt to adapt The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether in Stonehearst Asylum. Looking back at two loose Italian adaptations of Poe’s classic horror short The Black Cat, Arrow’s new Edgar Allan Poe’s Black Cats set sees a towering duo of giallo cinema auteurs picking and choosing their favorite elements of the original tale and molding them to their supernatural, blade-wielding will with blood-spilling glee and cinematic aplomb.

1985 was the year of Back To The Future, Rocky IV and Rambo II. But what about these 20 movies, that also deserve a fair share of love?
Thirty years ago, Marty McFly was riding high with the smash hit Back To The Future, while Sylvester Stallone enjoyed his most successful year yet with the one-two punch of Rambo: First Blood Part II and Rocky IV. It was an era of family sci-fi and teen comedies and bullet-spraying action, where The Breakfast Club and Teen Wolf rubbed shoulders with Death Wish 3 and Commando. Then there were low-key dramas like Out Of Africa and The Color Purple, which were both awards magnets at the Oscars.
Away from all those big hits, 1985 saw the release of a wealth of less successful movies, some of which found a second life on the then-huge home video circuit. Here's our pick of 20 underappreciated films from the year of Rambo,...

3.8 Kill The Messenger
The Following has faced a bit of an uphill battle this season to catch viewer interest. I think one of the big problems, which I've discussed, is the lack of Joe versus Ryan. The first episode of the first season opened with those two squaring off, and that remains one of the most satisfying moments of the show's first season. We immediately get a look into their budding relationship, and we immediately are forced to choose sides while still getting to enjoy Joe's megalomania. The surprise of the random Followers, Roderick, Classic Poe, and all the rest of it just helped to add to the enjoyment of the ridiculous, brilliant, awesomely dumb show about murderers and FBI agents murdering one another.

There's never been a comics character like John Constantine, DC Comics' trench-coat-sporting magician and wisecracking righter of wrongs. He's openly, specifically political. He's queer. He's working-class. He's wordy. He's indelibly and un-stereotypically English. Astoundingly, he's remained largely unchanged since he first took to the page in 1985 and throughout 26 years of constant publication — a kind of character consistency that's unheard of even among icons like Superman or Batman. And there's also the matter of how often he appears before his writers. Like, literally shows up out of nowhere on an otherwise ordinary day. Flesh and blood, cigarette and tie. They swear by it.Jamie Delano ran into him during a stroll near the British Museum, back when he was writing the first few arcs on Constantine's solo series, Hellblazer. "The figure caught my eye and cocked his head, flicked the ash from a ciggie, and continued without stopping," Delano...

Despite featuring psychedelic animation deserving of a canvas only movie houses can provide, The Congress is getting a more fitting release on VOD later this month. The lengthy history behind director Ari Folman’s follow-up to the mesmerizing Waltz With Bashir proves that you don’t have to be Richard Linklater to have the life of your passion project stretch out beyond typical production limits. Conceived in 2008, funded and shot in 2011, and finally premiered at Cannes in 2013, The Congress getting an on-demand release this month provides the ironic cherry on top of a film already awash in confounding self-awareness.

Scandal ends only its third season on Thursday night, and yet narrowing down the show’s many twists and turns into a top 10 list was an effort in restraint.
Take season 3′s “Yolo,” for instance: In a single hour, Huck tortures his onetime apprentice Quinn, Olivia discovers her mom is a terrorist, and the vice president murders her husband. That’s one episode. So we assembled EW’s most committed Gladiators to hash out our twisty top 10, and we think Olivia Pope would be proud of how we handled things. Scandal, Season 3, Episode 17, “Flesh and Blood”
Written by Severiano Canales and Miguel Nolla
Directed by Debbie Allen
Airs Thursdays at 10pm Est on ABC
On this week’s Scandal, Olivia and Co. attempt to protect the president, Jake copes with the death of B613, Mellie seeks a paternity test, and Mama Pope hides a bomb.
Remember when Pope and Associates used to handle actual cases that weren’t necessarily relevant to their personal lives? Each week a new crisis came to Olivia’s doorstep, and the team pulled together to handle it–sadly, that team spirit’s been missing for most of this season.
So, in a move that’s possibly too little too late for this season, “Flesh and Blood” pulls practically the entire cast into Liv’s place of business and puts them all to work. Just like that, the fresh and fun flow of the show’s first two seasons briefly returns,...

We open moments after where we left off, with Jake (Scott Foley) letting go of Olivia (Kerry Washington) long enough for her to gurgle out the word, “treason,” of which he is accusing her for bringing down B613.
The two bicker a bit, just in time for Fitz (Tony Goldwyn) and Cyrus (Jeff Perry) to come in and hear Jake talk about how Liv boinked him just to hack his phone. Hilariously, Jake himself observes how he was meant to be the protector of the free world and lost it all over a good lay, thereby acknowledging even to himself that he is in fact a complete imbecile and the worst Command ever.
They all quickly realize that even though they have an image of the guy Mama Pope was buying bombs from they know nothing about him. So they call in the one man who can help …
… and we...

Olivia worked with Fitz, Jake and Rowan in a race to stop Maya’s plans to blow up the President in Scandal’s “Flesh and Blood.”
Command Returns To Pope & Associates
We begin with Jake (Scott Foley), Liv (Kerry Washington), Fitz (Tony Goldwyn) and Cyrus (Jeff Perry) having a heated discussion in her office while Huck (Guillermo Díaz), Abby (Darby Stanchfield), David (Joshua Malina) and Harrison (Columbus Short) try to listen in from the next room, kept there by one of Fitz’s secret service men. Jake is furious that Liv just destroyed B-613, and both Fitz and Cyrus are uncomfortable with having B-613 yanked out of power, especially in light of the revelation that Maya is planning on blowing up the President. Jake shares whatever intel on the plot he has, but it isn’t much. What he does have is video of the man who sold Maya (Khandi Alexander) the bomb,...

The following ‘Batman Vs. Terminator’ animated fan-film from Tony Guerrero and Mitchell Hammond has just started making rounds on the internet, illustrating a story that many of us early 90s comic book readers have longed to see. This impressive 5-minute crossover tells the story of the Dark Knight who sets out across the country to meet up with the man determined “to neutralize the electronic menace – John Connor.”
According to Hammond’s blog, the film took four years to make and started as a project to learn animation. Hammond described that making the video was “fun while it lasted. Agonizing, depressing, anxiety-ridden with a gain in asthma and Ibs through paranoia induced fun.” Due to the difficultly he experienced, Hammond went on to say that its unlikely he will create any more videos.

You've got to watch this incredibly awesome fan-made animated short called Batman Vs. Terminator. The animation is really freakin' good, and I liked the tone, style, and designs of the characters. This is an insanely impressive short, and I want to see the story continue. The film was created by Mitchell Hammond, and here's the synopsis he gives:
30 years have passed since Bruce Wayne survived Skynet's nuclear blasts in August of '97. Iron demons now roam the planet, and without the requirement to defend the innocent against crime and injustice, Wayne has seeked refuge in the bomb shelter that saved his life; the Batcave.
Having scavenged the wasteland for resources, he discovers the radio of a dead soldier. There is static over a frequency. Flesh and blood is rising up to the west. With The Stinger; a riot control vehicular unit built before the apocalypse along with a refitted bomb blast vest,...

We all know that Arnold Schwarzenegger is coming back for the new film The Legend of Conan, and in a perfect world it will be the serious-minded and bloody sword and sandal flick we've all been hoping for. But will we get it?
The Arnold Fans recently caught up with the man himself to talk about the upcoming sequel...
“Well, age doesn’t mean anything to me because I work out every day," says Schwarzenegger of the physicality of the film at his age. "I work out twice a day, as a matter of fact. At night I work out with weights, and in the morning I do cardiovascular training. So for me, to get on the set and to swing the sword around again and to ride the horses and all those things doesn’t mean anything [and does not scare me] because I feel like I did thirty years ago. So as long as I stay in shape,...

Should we run the risk of remaking this record Razzie winner?
Although he’s not directed a film since Black Book six years ago, Paul Verhoeven’s name has been bouncing around the internet as a result of two of his best-known films being remade. This year we had the remake of Total Recall starring Colin Farrell, which was by all accounts deeply disappointing, and in 2014 we will be treated to a rebooted RoboCop (if “treated” is the right word).
Assuming that it takes money, as Total Recall did, which other of Verhoeven’s films should the Hollywood remake machine be targeting next? Anything from Starship Troopers onwards is in far too recent memory, while his early and highly-regarded Dutch-language work isn’t well-known enough for American audiences to be pulled in: there are few out there who would be hyped just from hearing the words The Fourth Man, Spetters or Soldier of Orange.

The people at Monsterverse have a good knack for writing classic monster stories in a world dominated by zombie comics and it's an appreciated effort by us readers. There's the truly awesome anthology series Bela Lugosi's Tales from the Grave and their serialized graphic novel series Flesh and Blood.
