Even in death, it seems that George Romero still has some tricks up his sleeve. We should expect nothing less from the father of the modern zombie movie. The filmmaker made his directorial debut in 1968 with the seminal zombie film, "Night of the Living Dead." The movie would spawn a six-film zombie franchise for Romero ending in 2009 with "Survival of the Dead." In addition to the zombie franchise, the horror icon also directed "The Crazies," "Creepshow," and "The Dark Half."

HBO and HBO Max will be home to new original films, highly anticipated streaming debuts of new releases, and the finales of three popular series throughout February. Below, we’ve assembled a complete list of everything new on HBO and HBO Max in February 2022, and it includes a new thriller from director Steven Soderbergh and starring Zoe Kravitz called “Kimi.” The original feature takes place in a Covid-19 pandemic Seattle and follows an agoraphobic tech worker who discovers violent crimes have occurred in a data stream. The Max Original film premieres on Feb. 10.
Also coming in February is the “Raised by Wolves” Season 2 premiere on Feb. 3, with new episodes released weekly, as well as the season premiere of “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” on Feb. 20. And coming to a close in February are the original series “Euphoria,” “And Just Like That…” and “Peacemaker,” which all air finales this month.

For its list of new releases of February 2022, HBO Max is bringing back one of its biggest original series.
The Ridley Scott-directed sci-fi epic Raised by Wolves helped launch HBO Max back in 2020 and now it’s finally back for another season. Raised by Wolves season 2 premieres with three episodes on Feb. 3. This season will continue the conflict between future atheists and theists on a remote planet, while two androids raise some kids.
February 2022 also sees the end of another, more recent HBO Max hit. Peacemaker airs its finale on Feb. 17. Thankfully that same day sees the premiere of another exciting original. Dream Raider is a Mandarin-language sci-fi thriller that carries some big Inception vibes.
There aren’t many original movies of note this month, but there are a lot of recent hits coming to HBO Max as library titles. Nightmare Alley arrives on Feb. 1, followed by The Many Saints of Newark on Feb.

Jennifer Hudson is producing and eyed to star in an untitled Christmas song comedy at New Line.
The feature will include both new and classic Christmas songs and center on a down-and-out singer’s life being turned upside down when she is mistaken for writing the next Christmas hit. Ira Madison III is writing the screenplay.
Hudson will next be seen as Aretha Franklin in the biopic “Respect,” directed by Liesl Tommy. Hudson, who was hand-picked by Franklin to play the role, executive produced the film. MGM is planning an Aug. 13, 2021, release date for “Respect,” which also stars Forest Whitaker, Marlon Wayans, Audra McDonald and Mary J. Blige.
Jonathan Glickman will produce the Christmas song movie through his Glickmania banner. Molly Mankiewicz will executive produce. The project reunites Hudson with Glickman, who is also producing “Respect.” His credits include “The Dark Half,” “Forever,” “Scandalous!” and “The Addams Family 2.”

No stranger to making recommendations for television shows and movies he’s enjoying, Stephen King has come up with another tip today for what to watch. In this case, it’s Escape at Dannemora, the Showtime limited series about a prison breakout.
In recent weeks, King has talked up the likes of Netflix’s Dark and Amazon Prime’s thriller 7500, while his streaming suggestions have become so frequent that we’ve even had to round them all up for ease-of-reference. Here’s what King had to say about Dannemora via his Twitter feed:
Escape At Dannemora is TV at its best. But the best of the best? The 9-minute+ opening of Episode 5 appears to be one continuous, eye-popping shot. Ben Stiller directs; Jessica Lee Gage is the Dp who brings it off with seemingly effortless panache.

CBS All Access‘ limited series adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Stand” will premiere Dec. 17, the streamer announced Tuesday.
The series will be a weekly one, with each of the subsequent eight episodes streaming one at a time every Thursday following that premiere. As previously announced, King penned the finale and also wrote a new coda that will take the story beyond where is 800-plus page 1978 tome left things.
“During the two years we spent making ‘The Stand,’ we all felt the responsibility of adapting what may be the most beloved work of one of the world’s most beloved storytellers, but none of us could have imagined that Stephen King’s 40-year-old masterpiece about a global pandemic would come to be so eerily relevant,” said showrunner Benjamin Cavell. “We’re honored to tell this sprawling, epic story, including a new coda that Stephen King has wanted to add for decades.

Before Hollywood decided to adapt the property into a number of movies, Stephen King’s It was known mostly as a miniseries from the 1990s. Starring Tim Curry as an admirable and perhaps even scarier version of Pennywise the Dancing Clown, this iteration terrorized the minds of millions of kids who grew up with it.
Much of the fear factor came from Tommy Lee Wallace’s stellar directing. But before the man behind Halloween 3 was awarded the position, George Romero was actually being set up to helm the production of the series. And though he may have passed away some years ago, his influence on the film industry is monumental.
Much of this is due to his most famous creation, Night of the Living Dead, which singlehandedly spawned the zombie genre and thus inspired the AMC hit series The Walking Dead, among many others. However, Romero’s influence goes...

George A. Romero figuratively wrote the book on zombies with his low-budget, independent 1968 horror film epoch Night of the Living Dead. World War Z, 28 Days Later, Zombieland and even The Walking Dead trudged that territory but didn’t map much new terrain. Romero’s final novel, The Living Dead, completed by author Daniel Kraus (The Shape of Water novelization), doesn’t expand on the basics of the zombie apocalypse. It doesn’t challenge the zombie trope Romero filled out with his subsequent works on animated corpses, when The Living Dead had their Day, Dawn, Land, Diary and Survival. But, with it, Romero and Kraus do peer deeper into the mirror to find a bitter reflection of the horrors Romero brings out in The Living.

“Mudbound” director Dee Rees is set to write and direct a new movie adaptation of George Gershwin’s American opera “Porgy and Bess” that’s set up at MGM, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.

Author Stephen King knows a thing or two about horrifying, terrifying, chilling, and even creepy subject matter. So, for him to say that something or someone is scarier than his work should make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. In a new video from NowThis News the prolific storyteller did just that.
In the video, the author was asked whether he thought the Donald Trump presidency was scarier than one of his novels, and he replied, “Short answer to that is yes, I do. I do think it’s scarier.

With “Midsommar” earning raves and performing well at the box office, horror has never been hotter. And if, as Justin Chang argued in the Los Angeles Times back in 2017, horror has become the defining genre of the Trump presidency, then Stephen King is its patron saint. The master of horror’s many works have seen renewed interest thanks to a slew of successful adaptations, from the box office record-breaker “It,” to its much-hyped follow-up “It: Chapter Two,” and many more projects currently in the works. And while the master of horror certainly is the king of scary set-ups, he says there’s one scenario so terrifying even he couldn’t improve upon it: Donald Trump’s presidency.
During an interview with NowThisNews, King laughed after being asked whether he thought the Trump presidency was scarier than one of his novels. “Short answer to that is, yes, I do. I do think it’s scarier,...

This does not bode well. The planet where several Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. heroes just got into all kinds of trouble is actually named after someone, and we’re about to meet him. Also, another of Enoch’s kind will be entering the mix.

When David Cronenberg accepts his Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Film Festival, the occasion will be marked by a screening of one of his 21 films. Cronenberg’s selection? “M. Butterfly,” his 1993 adaptation of David Henry Hwang’s Tony-winning play, about the decades-spanning love affair between a cross-dressing Chinese opera singer and the French diplomat unaware of his lover’s gender identity.
It’s a surprising choice, but then surprises are to be expected from the 75-year-old Canadian auteur, who has consistently evaded predictability across a five-decade career. “M. Butterfly” is rarely spoken of by critics as one of Cronenberg’s essential, or indeed quintessential, works: Reviews at the time were cool, and the film hasn’t built much of a revisionist following since. Yet Cronenberg is said to consider it among his most personal films. On closer inspection, you can see why. In an oeuvre that has...

When it comes to anthologies, no one scratches my omnibus itch better than Amicus. From Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors (1965) to (my personal favorite) Tales from the Crypt (1972) through From Beyond the Grave (’74), time and again they served up slivers of ghoulish goodness, succinct and delectable. Asylum (1972) is no different; as a matter of fact, to its advantage it probably has the best wraparound of any horror anthology, which helps set it apart.
Released in the U.K. in July with a rollout stateside by Cinerama Releasing Corporation in November, Asylum did well in its homeland, but fared less with the critics; Roger Ebert’s bizarre (yet humorous) two star review focuses completely on producer (and Amicus co-founder) Max J. Rosenberg’s obsession with coleslaw. Splayed cabbage aside, Asylum holds up as a witty multistory film with a wicked denouement and (as usual) solid work from legendary writer Robert Bloch...

Riverdale‘s flashback episode just added an ’80s throwback to the mix: Anthony Michael Hall will play Riverdale High’s longtime principal in the Season 3 installment, TVLine has learned.
Hall’s character, Principal Featherhead, will get “caught up in the game the teenagers are playing in an unexpected way,” per the official description. The flashback episode, entitled “The Midnight Club,” takes us back to when Riverdale’s parents were still in high school, with the show’s young cast playing the teen versions of their on-screen parents. In it, “we learn dark secrets” that the parents have kept hidden for years.

In it, “we learn dark secrets” that the parents have kept hidden for years.

Get ready to spend some more time in Castle Rock.
Hulu announced Tuesday that it has renewed its Stephen King pseudo-adaptation, “Castle Rock” for a second season.
“Castle Rock,” which has been billed as a limited series, is the re-imagining of the entire Stephen King canon into one universe and touches on some of King’s most iconic stories and characters. The fictional Maine town sits at the center of the King universe, appearing in numerous books including “Cujo,” “The Dead Zone,” and “The Body” (the novella that “Stand By Me” was based on).
Hulu did not divulge any plot details or if any new Stephen King stories that were not used in the first season, would be adapted for the follow up.

It’s Halloween in July with the launch of Hulu’s buzzy new Stephen King inspired series “Castle Rock.”
But in case that show alone isn’t enough to satisfy TV watchers’ thirst for summertime fear, there are plenty of other creepy King adaptations that are worth a late night viewing — and many even serve as the sources for countless easter eggs hidden in the new horror series.
Here’s a sampling of King-based movies and TV shows made throughout the years.

Warden Dale Lacey was on a mission from God. Before he severed his own head, that is — though on a show like Castle Rock, doing something after you decapitate yourself isn’t outside the realm of possibility. His mission, according to his suicide note: “Never again let him see the light of day. That’s what God told me.” Sorry, Warden (and God): Life has other plans. In the second episode of this Stephen King mash-up — “Habeas Corpus” — “The Kid” does indeed step out into the sunshine. And to...

[Editor’s Note: The following article contains spoilers for “Castle Rock” Season 1, Episodes 1, 2, and 3.]
Let’s get two obvious Stephen King references out of the way now: “Castle Rock” actors Bill Skarsgard and Sissy Spacek are tied to the previous King film adaptations of “It” and “Carrie,” respectively. People have been talking about their connection since casting was announced, but that doesn’t mean everyone realized it while sampling the first three episodes of Hulu’s new anthology series (available now). It’s not essential to the plot, after all.
Of course, neither is the song playing in Dale Lacy’s car as he makes his fateful drive to the quarry.

Stephen King is a one-man Marvel Cinematic Universe, with a Thanos down every suburban street. For decades, the Master of Horror has terrified readers — and moviegoers, via many mixed-bag movie adaptations — by rounding up an army of telepathic prom queens, demons in denim jackets, killer cars, rabid dogs, ancient vampires, cannibalistic clowns et al. and setting them loose in small-town America.

It may be Stephen King’s world, but “Castle Rock” showrunners Dustin Thomason and Sam Shaw are more than happy to live in it.
“The things that are the most enduringly disturbing about [King’s books] are that the monsters are human,” Shaw told TheWrap. “The monsters may be the protagonist.”
The setting for Hulu’s drama is Castle Rock, Maine, a place where monsters a-plenty have roamed around in King’s works. The fictional town sits at the center of the King universe, appearing in numerous books including “Cujo,” “The Dead Zone,” and “The Body” (the novella that “Stand By Me” was based on).

When creating an original horror anthology series based on the world of Stephen King, “Castle Rock” co-creators and co-showrunners Sam Shaw and Dustin Thomason knew one thing was key: leaning into the psychological aspects of what scares a person.
“We live in what might be considered the era of terror. Questions of violence and chaos and fear are at the center of a lot of conversations that people are having all over the world,” Thomason tells Variety.
In populating their version of the titular fictional town that features prominently in King stories from “The Dead Zone” to “Cujo” and “Needful Things,” Shaw says he wanted to include people who may be traumatized from things in their past but “dig in their heels” and choose to stay in the environment anyway. “All unhappy families are unhappy in their own way, and all unhappy towns are unhappy in their own way,” he explains.

If American Horror Story and Lost had a baby, and then that baby had another baby with Stephen King, it would probably look something like Hulu's upcoming TV series, Castle Rock. The drama is from executive producer J.J. Abrams and the twisted mind of King, who's been using the fictional town of Castle Rock as a setting for a number of his novels over the years. Although a few specifics about the show are still under wraps, we do have some ideas about where it's headed and who we'll see on screen.
Judging from the latest trailer, above, the series will intertwine characters and themes from King's body of work. The exact plot is still just a little murky, but here's what goes down in the new footage: Henry Deaver (Moonlight's André Holland) arrives in the fictional town after getting "a call from Shawshank" prison (the very same...

In case the downright chilling first trailer for Hulu's upcoming Stephen King TV series, Castle Rock, hasn't already convinced you to dive head first into the show when it premieres, the cast might do the rest of the heavy lifting.
King fans know that the author is a master of tying his fictional worlds together - just like It is connected to 11.22.63, several of his other works will tie in to Castle Rock. But it's not just King's past novels that will connect in the new TV show; several of his favorite actors from projects past will take on new roles in Castle Rock as well.
Did you catch every King alumnus while you watched the trailer? We bet not, so we went ahead and rounded them up for you. Now, raise your hand if you're ready for even more King-induced nightmares when the show premieres on Hulu on...

To say much of anything about “Castle Rock” teeters on the precipice of spoiler territory, since so much of the Hulu anthology series is inspired by preexisting properties, each with their own devoted fandom. Within the first few scenes of the premiere, there are enough references to Stephen King’s oeuvre to keep Jack Torrance typing “all work and no play” until the homicidal maniac actually becomes a dull boy. Said references will go unidentified in this review, but known characters, events, and most prominently, settings, keep coming back up throughout four utterly absorbing episodes.
So it should be doubly encouraging to know what’s best about Sam Shaw and Dustin Thomason’s follow-up to “Manhattan” is what’s new. The original stories told within Castle Rock — King’s oft-visited Maine town from novels like “The Dead Zone,” “Cujo,” and “Needful Things” — are mysterious and haunting; they can be unsettling...

Earlier today, Hulu dropped a brand new trailer for their horror anthology series, Castle Rock. The J.J. Abrams-produced show is said to be “an original story that combines the mythological scale and intimate character storytelling of Stephen King’s best-loved works.” It’s got quite the cast attached to it, too, as it’ll see talent like André Holland, Melanie Lynskey, Bill Skarsgård and more play out “an epic saga of darkness and light, on a few square miles of Maine woodland.”
And as if all that wasn’t enough, the series will also contain a number of nods to some of King’s most famous works, which is evident in the new footage that’s presented up above. Including callbacks to Cujo, It, Carrie and more, it paints a chilling picture of what’s to come and we couldn’t be more excited to dive into it all later this month.

Halloween always provides a good excuse to celebrate scary movies, but as anyone keen on the genre knows, it’s never really a bad time to do that. That’s especially been true this year, long before “It” broke box office records. Just a few months into 2017 and it was already a banner year for genre films, with “Get Out” becoming a cultural phenomenon, new horror festivals generating headlines, and other promising developments that send a positive message to genre fans. While the industry worries about the future of moviegoing and the quality of the art form in a blockbuster-dominated era, horror fans have nothing to worry about — the genre is secure, but only if you know where to look.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What filmmaker would you most like to see try their hand at a horror movie?
Kristy Puchko (@KristyPuchko), Pajiba/Riot Material
I struggled with this question, because a lot of the directors I have adored have worked in horror, be it Tim Burton (“Beetlejuice,” “Edward Scissorhands”), Robert Zemeckis (“Death Becomes Her”), Edgar Wright (“Shawn of the Dead”), Frank Oz (“Little Shop of Horror”), Guillermo del Toro (“Crimson Peak”), Bong-Joon Ho (“The Host”), Jim Jarmusch (“Only Lovers Left Alive”), or Taika Waititi (“What We Do In the Shadows”). This pre-Halloween weekend, multiple specialized distributors opened and expanded significant fall season releases. Comedy “The Square” (Magnolia), this year’s top Cannes prize-winner, launched at a high level for a subtitled film on the road to national release and Oscar contention.
No other opening reached its levels. “The Novitiate” (Sony Pictures Classics) drew disappointing results. “Bill Nye: Science Guy” (PBS) showed some initial promise, while “Jane” (Abramorama/National Geographic), another documentary about a well-known scientist, primate conservationist Jane Goodall, showed strong second weekend results. A24’s “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” led second weekend expansions.

Ruben Ostlund’s Cannes Palme d’Or-winner, despite a 2.5 hour length, opened unusually well for a subtitled film. The Swedish Oscar entry, a comedy about the art world, opened at four prime New York/Los Angeles locations with...

For most, Halloween is more of a state of mind than a holiday, but for those too shy to celebrate, a fun way to feel the thrill of Oct. 31 might be through TV’s favorite characters. What is Halloween without Ted Mosby’s Slutty Pumpkin or trick-or-treating with the Belchers?
Whether it’s seeking some pop culture costume inspiration or seeing your faves partake in particularly spooky behavior, here are the must-watch Halloween episodes available for streaming on Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon.

(Note: This post contains some light spoilers from the story of “Destiny 2”.) If there’s one good thing to come out of the fall of the Last City at the start of “Destiny 2,” it’s that you get to hang out in the game’s new social area, an extremely peaceful farm. After everyone flees the City when it’s attacked by the evil Red Legion, you can no longer return to the Tower, the place where players congregate between missions in the original “Destiny.” The replacement is a small refugee camp built in an overgrown farm in Earth’s European Dead Zone.
