The veteran actor’s pleasurably zealous turn could be given twice as much screen time in what feels like a wade through dull dramatisations of bits of scripture
You know the way Dracula likes to deliver a dramatic speech, then turns into a bat, and flies away? It turns out that the angel Gabriel does something similar, only he turns into a blue scarf, the same kind of snazzy number you might get in Monsoon as a birthday present for your mum. Whoosh! Away he goes. Unfortunately, Gabriel-as-knitwear is about as entertaining as it gets in this fairly straightforward biblical adaptation of the early years of Mary, mother of Christ.
Actually that’s not quite fair. Anthony Hopkins as Herod understands the assignment, bellowing lines such as “Kneeeeeeel!” with requisite gusto. We’ve seen him serve more fully flavoured ham before, however, in lavish tosh like The Silence of the Lambs...

Luca Guadagnino and Lionsgate announced that the “Call Me by Your Name” and “Queer” director is in final discussions to film a new version of Bret Eason Ellis’ dark horror novel “American Psycho,” nearly 25 years after the same company released Mary Harron’s satirical adaptation. In a key role that elevated his career, the 2000 film starred Christian Bale as yuppie investment banker-turned-serial killer Patrick Bateman.
It’s the kind of announcement destined to raise eyebrows. Guadagnino is in a career sweet spot after “Challengers” and “Queer” this year (and “After the Hunt” in post); he already has many projects in the works, including “Separate Rooms” with Josh O’Connor and a Thomas Mann adaptation in early development. So why is he choosing a remake — and for a film that doesn’t seem that long ago?
New versions of older films are not unusual. Even the word “remake” is tricky here — does that apply with adaptations?...

People tend to fear what they do not understand, and in A24‘s The Legend of Ochi trailer, a young girl defies the laws of tradition to return a mythical creature to its forest home. Isaiah Saxon wrote and directed this adventure fantasy film starring Helena Zengel, Willem Dafoe, Emily Watson, and Finn Wolfhard.
The Legend of Ochi takes place in what appears to be some post-apocalyptic setting, with survivors forever fearful of what lurks within the depths of a nearby jungle. The group shares stories about a vicious creature skulking beyond the treeline, drooling and waiting for anyone foolish enough to come within its iron-like grasp. They hunt the beast but know little about its actual identity. It’s all fear-mongering and cautionary tales. That is until one young woman, Yuri, discovers the truth and can communicate with the creature.
Here’s the official logline for The Legend of Ochi...

After coming up short on his first two Best Actor Oscar bids for “Walk the Line” and “The Master,” Joaquin Phoenix took the gold in 2020 for “Joker.” The film reaped a whopping 11 Oscar nominations and cracked the billion dollar mark at the box office. The sequel, “Joker: Folie à Deux,” which hits theaters October 4, makes Phoenix the 11th Best Actor victor to reprise his winning role in a feature film.
Only one of the first 10 fellows to pull off this double feature earned another Oscar nomination: Bing Crosby (he won for “Going My Way” in 1945 and was nominated for “The Bells of St. Mary’s” in 1946).
Those who preceded Crosby in reprising their winning roles without academy recognition are Warner Baxter, who went on to appear in both “The Cisco Kid” (1931) and “Return of the Cisco Kid” (1939), and Spencer Tracy, who starred in “Men of Boys Town” (1941).

The return of a reality TV monster that’s sure to dominate social media conversation; Charlie and Nick’s blossoming romance; a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the NBA courtesy of LeBron James and Anthony Edwards; the latest gem from an action auteur; Tyler Perry’s first Netflix television drama and another helping espionage and drama from Keri Russell are some of the highlights among the new films and series hitting Netflix in October.

A mere mention of Jackie Chan’s name is enough to send fans crazy. The Hong Kong born star is acting royalty after all. Not many can match the love he has amassed from his fandom over the years. That is why not many studios would reject the opportunity to get associated with him.
In spite of his pull, there is one project he is a part of which isn’t finding takers. The Rush Hour trilogy has been one of the most successful in the genre, giving fans many laughs along the road. But it seems that the proposed sequel to the trilogy is not likely to get off the ground.

It can be tough to catch the magic of unease that “Longlegs” has laid on people during and after seeing the film.
Since seeing the latest Oz Perkins horror film, many have been clamoring to recapture that magic. Luckily there are plenty of TV shows that balance the supernatural with the everyday when it comes to hunting and tracking down a serial killer — and worse.
These are the seven TV shows you should check out once you see “Longlegs” and are needing to extend that pit-in-your-stomach feeling.

Sir Anthony Hopkins earned his first Oscar for the role of serial killer Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs. Based on the novel by Thomas Harris, it was the last movie to win the ‘Big Five’ awards at the Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Adapted Screenplay. Hopkins only had about 16 minutes of screen time.
Hopkins went on to reprise his role in two more films, the sequel Hannibal and the prequel Red Dragon. While the sequel was more commercially successful than the original, the film was not as well-received and the actor himself was reportedly not happy with the film. He also mentioned that one scene in particular on Hannibal was done differently from the book.

Edward Norton is quite vocal about his admiration for veteran filmmaker Spike Lee. The actor could not understand why a lot of people sleep on his talent, but the Red Dragon star would not let unfair criticism taint the director’s reputation.

As horror fans mourn the exit of Bryan Fuller from a “Friday the 13th” TV series in the works at Peacock from producers A24, new details about Fuller’s take on the material are starting to emerge. According to filmmaker Vincenzo Natali, who said on X he read the first two scripts, the show reinvented the iconic franchise much the same way Fuller put his spin on Hannibal Lecter for his acclaimed three-season “Hannibal” series.
“Bryan Fuller’s Crystal Lake was well on its way to becoming another Hannibal-level reinvention that was simultaneously beautiful, sad, poetic, funny and horrifying. I mourn its passing,” the “Splice” director said.
“Scream” writer Kevin Williamson, who was working on “Crystal Lake” with Fuller, also took to X to share details about Fuller’s vision, teasing an hour-long chase episode and a story that centered the grief of Jason Voorhees’ mother.

Bryan Fuller has dramatically quit as showrunner on A24’s Friday The 13th prequel series Crystal Lake, citing creative differences.
Bryan Fuller, previously known for hit TV series Hannibal, has quit his role as showrunner on A24’s upcoming Friday The 13th prequel show, Crystal Lake.
Fuller made the announcement in an Instagram post, in which he stated that “A24 has elected to go a different direction with the material.”
“Adapting classic horror is something I have some experience with,” Fuller wrote, as shared by TheWrap. “These shows require a vision that elevates and transforms, as well as delivers what audiences have come to expect, which is an ambitious and risky endeavour. It requires people to take the leap with me.”
Fuller then sought to remind his followers of his previous success with Hannibal, which served as a prequel to the likes of Michael Mann’s Manhunter and Jonathan Demme’s Silence Of The Lambs.

As attention turns to the Oscars around this time every year, it’s easy to get caught up remembering some of the big winners. One of the most notable champs was The Silence of the Lambs, which took home the “Big Five” awards in 1992: Best Picture, Best Actor (Anthony Hopkins), Best Actress (Jodie Foster), Best Director (Jonathan Demme), and Best Adapted Screenplay (Ted Tally), as well as Best Sound Mixing and Best Film Editing to round it out.

As I get older, I find it harder and harder to find horror movies from the 80s and even 90s to qualify for a recommendation towards a best horror movie you never saw. First is the influx of all these great companies like Vinegar Syndrome, Arrow, and Severin Films, not to mention Kino and Scream Factory, who pull out all the stops finding the most hidden of hidden gems to clean up and release. Second, we have a ludicrous amount of streaming services, and the free ones typically can find these smaller movies that cost way less to license a streamable version. Between my generation recommending everything under the sun to their coworkers, friends, and family as well as newer generations being willing to stream something if its easy to find, the 80s is well represented, for better and for worse. The 2000s are Chock Full of movies that came...

Exclusive: Film Bridge International is launching sales at AFM on horror Xelter, whose producers include The De Laurentiis Company (Hannibal) and Head Gear Films (Talk To Me).
The period horror film directed by Martin Bonnici is currently in production in Malta, with a cast of Maltese newcomers alongside actors including Brit Bobby Schofield (The Covenant) and Irish actor Moe Dunford (Vikings).
The WWII-set movie charts the legend of the Babaw, a supernatural creature known for stalking and killing children. The film, inspired by true historical events, sees citizens of Malta take shelter from Nazi bombardment in the ancient catacombs underneath the cities, where they suffered deadly peril from collapsing tunnels and entrapment. That experience scarred a generation, and led to stories about creatures that stole children who strayed too far away from their parents.
Screenplay was written by Scottish screenwriter and comics writer Emma Beeby, based on a story Beeby wrote with Gordon Rennie.

Right from the start, it was obvious that Hannibal was going to be must-see TV, and not just because of when it aired, after a block of sitcoms on Thursday night. Bryan Fuller's small-screen prequel to Red Dragon, which premiered on NBC a decade ago and survived for three critically acclaimed, ratings-challenged seasons, flaunted many of its best qualities upfront, flamboyantly peacocking like some monstrous version of the network logo.

While it’s hard not to pick favorites, there’s no such thing as a definitive version of a story. Sure, some retellings are bound to be more popular than others, but there’s nothing necessarily wrong with updating a compelling idea for a new audience. That being said, it’s quite rare for a new version of an established intellectual property to stand on its own merits, with most remakes and adaptations being content with simply rehashing the things that made their predecessors successful instead of finding a new angle from which to tell an original story.
In television, this means that we’ve seen plenty of forgettable shows based on existing franchises, with everything from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off to Clueless spawning soulless spin-offs meant to capitalize on brand awareness. Hannibal Lecter… a name that has been cemented forever in the hearts of horror fans alike. We’ve seen him in some truly gruesome, yet unforgettable films. The most well known is The Silence of the Lambs, which was followed up in 2001 with the mostly disliked, self-titled Hannibal. But the very next year, in 2002, we were treated to somewhat of a redemption story of Hannibal Lecter in the form of Red Dragon (watch it Here). Did you know though, that this wasn’t the first time Red Dragon was made? Did you also know that none other than Brett Ratner, of then Rush Hour fame, directed this psychological thriller? Rockstar Games are no strangers to controversy, with the developers having become the subject of infamous scandals ranging from Grand Theft Auto’s Hot Coffee mod to the banning of Bully in several countries. However, despite decades of shocking conservative parents by taking gaming to the next level, I think no one would disagree that the project which best represents the company’s dedication to the extreme is 2003’s video game Manhunt, a gritty snuff simulator that takes stealth games into a decidedly terrifying direction.
Borrowing from horrific urban legends and schlocky exploitation flicks in equal measure, the title became a disturbing cult hit that’s still cited today as one of the most gruesome games ever made. And two decades after its release, I think that it’s time to look back on the origins of this strange little experiment in order to find out why there’s never...

In October 2017, Bryan Singer appeared energetic and in control as he welcomed Olympic diver Greg Louganis and Queen guitarist Brian May on the London set of “Bohemian Rhapsody.” But behind the scenes, chaos reigned. The onetime Hollywood wunderkind’s career was about to unravel, as Fox executives were growing weary of Singer’s pro- longed absences and erratic behavior. On Dec. 4, Fox pulled the trigger and fired Singer, replacing him with Dexter Fletcher. As Louganis and May smiled for photos with the acclaimed director, it marked one of Singer’s last known days on a film set.
Getting fired from “Bohemian Rhapsody” was a public humiliation for a filmmaker who had racked up hit after hit. But a series of personal scandals would dwarf that professional setback. Over the ensuing five and a half years, Singer tried to reenter the fray with an $80 million remake of ’80s action film “Red Sonja” for Millennium Films.

This article contains spoilers for "Succession" season 4.
Before he terrorized the planet as the CEO of Waystar RoyCo, "Succession" star Brian Cox played the world's most infamous cannibal: Hannibal Lecter, in Michael Mann's "Manhunter."
The final episode of HBO's "Succession" airs tonight, and fans are eager to see how the torrid tale of the warring Roy siblings ends. Jesse Armstrong's brutal satirical drama about the backstabbing machinations of a media mogul (who definitely isn't Rupert Murdoch) became an instant critical darling and has enthralled audiences from the start. It's a scathing portrayal of the weak-minded bullies and wannabe social climbers who populate the inner circle of a CEO's unimpeachable corporate powerhouse. At its heart is Logan Roy, the merciless businessman who will (and did on multiple occasions) throw anyone under the bus to retain his iron grip on Waystar RoyCo.

According to /Film readers, the "Alien" film series is the greatest horror franchise ever. Yes, the xenomorph-starring series certainly has some strong films. However, it's not the most consistent (more on that later), so I disagree. Throughout horror history, sequels, remakes, and reboots have spawned franchises in sub-genres ranging from slashers to the paranormal. No IP is immune to a barrage of iterations. Sometimes, they work. Other times, well ... They leave much to be desired.
Whether we're talking heavy hitters like "A Nightmare on Elm Street" and "Halloween" or offbeat series such as "The Living Dead," there's always a franchise to gnash your teeth on as a horror fan. Ghoulish monsters, vengeful witches, cannibal serial killers, and disturbed sleep demons decorate our favorite storytelling medium with nightmare fuel. But they're not all created equal.

Our insatiable appetite for charmingly vicious killer Dr. Hannibal Lecter began with Thomas Harris’ 1981 novel Red Dragon, and he’s come to life in five films and a TV series. To commemorate the 10th anniversary of NBC’s delicious Hannibal series (all 39 episodes are available on Hulu) on April 4, we poured a nice Chianti and dissected who played him best. Long before playing Succession’s fiery patriarch Logan Roy, Brian Cox’s take as Lecter in 1986’s Manhunter was light on charm but heavy on vicious evil. By contrast, Mads Mikkelsen’s portrayal in the 2013–15 series oozed a dangerously sexy Hannibal with a side of dark humor. But, come on, nobody did it better than Sir Anthony Hopkins, who scored the 1992 Oscar for his intoxicating portrayal in The Silence of the Lambs. No wonder he’d play Lecter again in two subsequent films, Hannibal (2001) and Red Dragon (2002). Just keep the fava beans to yourself,...

Warning: contains spoilers for Luther Series 1 – 5
If Andy Serkis is to be believed, his antagonist in the upcoming Luther: The Fallen Sun is to be the grizzled London detective’s fiercest adversary yet. But he’ll have to go some way to out-baddie Ruth Wilson’s Alice Morgan – the cunning killer who plagued/romanced Idris Elba’s morally grey copper in Luther’s first five series.
Alice first crosses paths with Luther at the start of series one, as the Met’s Serious Crimes Unit investigates the murder of her parents. Luther knows she committed the crime, but her genius track-covering means he can’t prove it. Their initial game of cat-and-mouse turns into a twisted and brilliant courtship – one that would go on to define the show’s success.
A fiercely intelligent killer that matches our hero at every turn, Alice shares more than a few qualities with one...
