Women in entertainment are galvanized heading into 2025, the CEO of Women in Film and TV (Wftv) has said.
Ahead of the organization’s biggest night of the year on Friday at the Wftv Awards, Katie Bailiff sat down with The Hollywood Reporter to talk about what’s being celebrated — and what’s still to be done — as they get ready to mark another year of supporting women in U.K. media.
“I think we’ve come a really long way,” Bailiff said, referencing the comments of U.K. MasterChef co-host Gregg Wallace, who attributed his on-set misconduct allegations to comments from “a handful of middle-class women of a certain age” (Wallace later apologized after sparking fury, but has denied the claims made against him).
“All you have to do is look at this past week, the phrase that’s become quite iconic already: ‘middle-class women of a certain age,'” Bailiff said.

Exclusive: Another longtime Los Angeles-based TV production is leaving California. CBS Media Ventures’ syndicated court show Hot Bench, currently in its 11th season, will move to Connecticut next season.
The Judith Sheindlin-created program, which is in Year 1 of a two-season pickup, recently informed its stars and crew of the pending relocation. It is done for financial reasons, with Hot Bench projected to get a 30% tax credit in Connecticut, which I hear would amount to savings of about $3.5M a year on its $12M budget.
It is unclear whether the show’s current judges, Michael Corriero, Rachel Juarez and Yodit Tewolde, would make the move to the East Coast; one or more departures appear likely.
“Given the industrywide economic challenges, we have made a budgetary decision to shift production of Hot Bench to Connecticut,” a CBS Media Ventures spokesperson said in a statement to Deadline. “Hot Bench is the #1 original court show on television,...

John Torode has described recent allegations of historical misconduct involving his MasterChef co-host Gregg Wallace as “truly upsetting” in his first statement since Wallace made headlines.
Shared this afternoon on Instagram, Torode said in his statement that he hadn’t spoken publicly about the allegations until now because he had been “away filming MasterChef overseas.”
Torode’s statement added: “The thought of anyone who has appeared on our show not having a brilliant experience is awful to hear.”
Torode continued to write that he would not speak any further about the matter as the official investigation into Wallace continued. You can read the full statement below.
Banijay UK, which owns MasterChef maker Shine, launched an external review into Wallace’s behavior last week after the BBC published an initial report of 13 people saying Wallace had made inappropriate sexual comments to them during their time on the popular cooking show.

The BBC is pulling its “MasterChef” Christmas specials following the allegations made against presenter Gregg Wallace, the latest escalation in an episode that has dominated U.K. headlines.
Wallace stepped aside from presenting the U.K. edition of the cookery show last week following a BBC News investigation in which numerous allegations of historic inappropriate sexual comments and inappropriate behaviour were made against him. His lawyers have denied he engages in behaviour of a sexually harassing nature, while Banijay — which produces “MasterChef” — has launched an investigation.
The BBC’s decision to remove the Christmas specials from its programming marks a U-turn for the broadcaster, after it said on Monday that all “Masterchef” episodes — including two festive editions — would air as planned.
“The celebrity Christmas specials are obviously a different type of show and in the current circumstances we have decided not to broadcast them,” a spokesperson said on Tuesday.

The BBC has U-turned from its original position on MasterChef by pulling Christmas episodes following the Gregg Wallace allegations.
The corporation had initially said that all filmed eps would still air, despite the fact that Wallace has stepped away from the show as producer Banijay UK investigates allegations of inappropriate behavior. Today, it has told BBC News that the Christmas eps will not air.
This comes after more than a dozen women accused Wallace of inappropriate behaviour and sexually inappropriate comments, including ex-Newsnight host Kirsty Wark.
Following that BBC News investigation last week, the BBC’s initial position was that it would continue to roll cameras, satisfying concerns from the likes of broadcasting union Bectu that pausing the show would lead to a loss of work for freelancers in a difficult market.

Gregg Wallace, co-presenter of the reality competition series MasterChef UK and its celebrity and professional spinoffs, is going on the defensive amid allegations that he has behaved inappropriate on set. In a series of Instagram Stories videos on Sunday, December 1, Wallace said that “a handful of middle-class women of a certain age” are behind the allegations. He also suggested female MasterChef contestants made “sexual remarks or sexual innuendo” while filming the show. “Now I’ve been doing MasterChef for 20 years — amateur, celebrity, and professional MasterChef— and I think, in that time, I have worked with over 4,000 contestants of all different ages, all different backgrounds, all walks of life,” Wallace said in one clip. “And apparently now — I’m reading in the paper — there’s been 13 complaints in that time. Now, in the newspaper, I can see the complaints coming from a handful of middle-class women of a certain age, just from Celebrity MasterChef.

Exclusive: Fox Entertainment and Hulu are staying in business together in a major way.
The two companies have struck a new multiyear content partnership that includes in-season streaming rights for Fox’s programming slate.
The broadcast network and the Disney-owned streamer also have expanded their multiplatform marketing arrangement in the deal, which sources tell Deadline is worth more than $1.5B over four years with the ad-load included.
Fox got in early to renew the deal – the previous arrangement was unveiled in January 2023 and Deadline understands this new pact runs through 2029. It gives the network a bedrock to build out its slate of originals including dramas such as Rescue Hi-Surf and Murder in a Small Town, comedies including Animal Control and reality series such as The Masked Singer, The Floor and Gordon Ramsay’s Next Level Chef.
The move also means that the long-running Disney-produced animated series — particularly The Simpsons, Family Guy and Bob’s Burgers,...

Australia-born, London-based Payne has come a long way from her first industry job as the assistant for international distribution for Hanna-Barbera Australia. She now oversees Banijay Rights, the distribution arm of the world’s largest indie production conglomerate, selling everything from Survivor, Big Brother and MasterChef to Black Mirror and Peaky Blinders worldwide.
Navigating a contracting market dominated by “streamer correction and general industry consolidation” has been a challenge this past year, says Payne, one complicated by executive shuffling across broadcast and platform groups which has “delayed decision making” and led to gaps in the market, like the sharp decline in commissioning for mid-budget factual entertainment series.

Despite the challenges of entering a competitive market like the U.S., where audiences are accustomed to local content, Australian TV shows have been relatively successful. Beyond the well-known success of the hit children’s show “Bluey,” the most popular Australian show globally, the rising popularity of reality shows from Australia is also surprising and may indicate some untapped opportunities for streaming platforms to license content.
Among English-speaking countries, Australia is the third-largest exporter of TV shows to the U.S. in terms of demand, behind the United Kingdom and Canada, and ranks seventh overall. But when it comes to reality TV, Australia is the second most popular country of origin, trailing only the United Kingdom, as of the third quarter of 2024. Reality shows from Australia had a higher demand share than any other major country in the U.S. market, with 28.3% of the total demand for Australian shows coming from this genre.

An ambitious chef (Ariana DeBose) opens her first restaurant in a remote location and faces kitchen chaos, immense self-doubt, and a supernatural presence trying to sabotage her success at every turn. This is the simple, straightforward premise of House of Spoils, written and directed by Bridget Savage Cole and Danielle Krudy (Blow the Man Down), with DeBose as the main attraction. I consider DeBose (West Side Story) a versatile artist unafraid to take on roles in new genres, as her career has shown so far, so expectations were mostly positive.

Of the 12 TV shows that won Primetime Emmys this year, only two of them – Max’s Outstanding Comedy Series winner “Hacks” and Apple TV+’s “The Morning Show” – were filmed in California.
It’s one of many warning signs that the Golden State’s status as the worldwide leader in entertainment production is eroding, and Hollywood’s workforce is crying out for change — especially as other states and countries ramp up incentives to wrest productions away from the birthplace of Hollywood.
“Many of my constituents are really panicked right now over the state of the industry,” California state Rep. Laura Friedman (D-Burbank) told TheWrap. “The people who work directly on film and TV shoots haven’t seen a return to the levels of production before the strike, and the ancillary businesses that thrive off of those shoots haven’t seen their revenue return to normal.”

The winner of “MasterChef: Generations” was crowned on Wednesday night, when judges Gordon Ramsay, Aarón Sánchez and Joe Bastianich named 27-year-old millennial Michael Leonard the 14th champion of the franchise. The Myrtle Beach, South Carolina native defeated Kamay Lafalaise and Becca Gibb to win the $250,000 grand prize, a new Viking kitchen and MasterChef trophy. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
“It’s surreal. It’s something that I’ve always dreamed of,” Michael told Gold Derby senior editor Denton Davidson. “I guess it’s something that you feel like you can do, but when it happens, it’s like a dream come true. It’s like I’m living this alternate reality, but it’s insane.”
In the Season 14 finale, the finalists had to create a three-course meal that highlighted their generational backgrounds and culinary skill sets. Michael took several risks throughout each course, impressing the judges with his ambition and technical flare.

Exclusive: CBS may have found the cooking competition series that it’s been looking for – from Padma Lakshmi and former NBCU content chief Susan Rovner.
The network has struck a development deal with the pair for a new food format that marks the first project to be baked up by Rovner’s new production company Aha Studios.
There are few details about the format itself, but the Paramount-owned network has been looking for its own series to rival the likes of Top Chef and MasterChef.
Amy Reisenbach, President of CBS Entertainment, revealed to Deadline in June that she wanted her network to get into the food space. “We have definitely talked about trying to find our version of a cooking show. I’m personally a big fan of them,” she said.
The new series will come from Lakshmi’s Delicious Entertainment and Rovner’s Aha Studios with both exec producing.
