Remembering Anita Pallenberg, the Muse at the Center of The Rolling Stones’ Tumultuous Love Triangle
With the death of Anita Pallenberg , the world lost an icon of the Swinging Sixties. The Italian-German model became a fashion It Girl of the age and her friendship with Andy Warhol integrated her into the cutting edge art world. She appeared in cult movie classics including Candy (featuring Ringo Starr) and Jane Fonda’s Barbarella, but her most famous role is undoubtedly that of muse for the Rolling Stones. Chicago – Sienna Miller creates illumination that a movie screen never forgets. From her early roles in “Alfie” and “Factory Girl,” to the more recent “Foxcatcher” and “American Sniper,” Miller adds an extra level of truth that generates expressive and notable characteristics to the roles that she portrays.
In “American Sniper,” Miller portrays the real-life Taya Kyle, wife of military man Chris Kyle. Chris is the subject of the film’s title, a trained Navy Seal who has the distinction of being the marksman who had the most “kills” of any sniper in American war history. In the film, Siena Miller represents the home front for Chris Kyle, the wife that is waiting for his adjustment to civilian life. Like her previous roles, Miller finds the nuance in Taya, and produces the conflict that gives no easy answers to a warrior without a war.

Ingmar Bergman bowed down to his peer, Andrei Tarkovsky, for having given life to the language of cinema as dream: “Tarkovsky is for me the greatest, the one who invented a new language, true to the nature of film, as it captures life as reflection, life as a dream.” This praise from one master to another was more than warranted, for the two auteurs’ bodies of work are arguably the most distinguishable in the canon of film history for their use of moving imagery, intricate mise-en-scène, and meaning that arises not only once in the frame or from an actor’s mouth but that ripples throughout the remainder of the world of the movie. Hey now, this is what dreams are made of.

Some of the most chilling art projects not only transform the way we see and hear ourselves in shocking ways, but often give us a whole new perspective on the places where ordinary people interact every day. That's the goal of designers Francesco Tacchini, Julinka Ebhardt and Will Yates-Johnson at the Royal College of Art, whose project Space Replay is a remarkable demonstration of how an electronic device can interact with people through the medium of sound... but it's also quite disturbing, as it shows how relatively easy it is for an inventive thinker to eavesdrop on the conversations of passers-by. The sphere is a helium-filled latex balloon fitted with sensitive electronics which record, enhance and “echo” sounds from public spaces as it drifts on air currents and seems to follow commuters, listening in on their conversations and playing them back for all to hear. In the clip below,...

When Justin Lin clambered aboard the Fast & Furious franchise with 2006's Tokyo Drift, it was in a very different state. Although still undoubtedly popular, its original stars had gradually drifted away, and it's just possible that, in less secure hands, it could have drifted into straight-to-dvd oblivion. Instead, Lin managed to not only gradually tempt the cast from the first two films to return in Fast & Furious 4, but with Fast Five, take the street racing series in another direction altogether.
A larger-than-life heist movie with added Dwayne Johnson, Fast Five breathed new life into the franchise, and became one of the ten top-grossing movies of 2011. This year's Fast & Furious 6 (or Fast Six, or Furious Six, depending on who you speak to) was an even bigger hit,...
