“Nonexistent problem, ineffective solution.”
This was the sage advice legendary writer Jim Downey would give to young writers like David Mandel when they were working on commercial parodies for Saturday Night Live. “That was often the key to a great commercial parody,” says Mandel, who wrote on the show from 1992 to 1995. “I loved making the commercial parodies. The chance to go off and make a little film was the opposite of SNL. You could edit it and be precise with it. It was exciting.”
Mandel got to write a number of commercial parodies during his three-year run on SNL, but his four favorites are below.
That’s Not Yogurt
The premise was simple: It was a guy eating yogurt, and the announcer keeps telling him, “That’s not yogurt,” but he won’t tell him what it is so the person gets very paranoid. It was my pitch, but Downey...

Ted Danson appeared in almost all 12 seasons of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” as one of Larry David’s nemeses. Playing a pretentious and smug version of himself, the “Cheers” star became a fan-favorite on the show, most recently appearing in the series finale.
But Danson was initially quite skeptical of the unscripted HBO sitcom — and only offered to play himself out of pity for David.
“‘Curb’ really did change my life, because it reinvigorated my desire to be funny,” Danson said on his podcast “Where Everybody Knows Your Name” while talking to “Curb” star J.B. Smoove. But when he first watched the pilot with his wife, Mary Steenburgen, Danson “thought it sucked.”
“I thought it absolutely sucked, and I felt sorry for my new friend, Larry David,” Danson said. “So, in trying to be an encouraging kind of thing, I said, ‘If you ever need us to play ourselves, we’d be happy to.

“I have a really special place in my heart for ‘Drake & Josh’ and I would love to revisit the character. I’d love to revisit something with Josh,” Bell said. “My dream is to do something kind of like ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm,’ where we’re playing ourselves but trying to navigate life today.”

Against larger Hollywood trends towards embracing cultural identity, Jewish characters on TV are still depicted as hiding or playing down their Jewishness, according to a new study from USC Annenberg Norman Lear Center’s Media Impact Project.
The study, undertaken with the support of the Jewish Institute for Television and Cinema Hollywood Bureau, also confirmed that “Jewface” really does exist, noting that only about half of Jewish characters are played by confirmed Jewish actors. It also pointed out that Jewish actresses are 21 percent less likely to be cast as Jewish characters than their male counterparts are.
The study is the first of its kind to focus on Jewish representation since 1999 and predates the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel and ensuing war in Gaza, which has led to an explosive 60 percent increase in antisemitic hate crimes. Still, incidents of antisemitism rose in the period covered by the study, which analyzed 108 Jewish...

A number of acclaimed, awards-hopeful films went into Monday morning’s 2025 Golden Globe nominations expected to land multiple nominations but underperformed relative to expectations.
Despite recent awards from critics groups and wins and nominations just last week from the Gotham Awards and Independent Spirit Awards, respectively, the following projects only landed one nomination each: Babygirl, A Different Man (which less than a week ago won best feature at the Gotham Awards), Nickel Boys, The Outrun, The Piano Lesson, The Seed of the Sacred Fig and Sing Sing.
Additionally, acclaimed awards hopefuls (and expected nominees in multiple categories) Blitz, The Room Next Door, September 5 and Saturday Night each only landed one nomination.
Despite racking up numerous critics prizes and an award from the British Independent Film Awards just yesterday, Hard Truths star Marianne Jean-Baptiste missed out on a Golden Globe nomination this morning, with the film also failing to land any nominations.

As each year comes to an end, entertainment outlets remind us of all the beloved celebrities who left us over the past 12 months. There’s no need to get that depressing, but why not pour one out for the comedy television we lost in 2024?
Whether it was due to cancelation, lost networks or creator fatigue, here are six shows that comedy fans were mourning this year…

How did a show that premiered in 1999 give us only 12 seasons? Larry David’s comedy ode to himself finally concluded in 2024, devising an ending that essentially apologized for the botch job on that Seinfeld finale all those years ago.

Sitcoms are among the most beloved TV genres in the U.S. and a cornerstone of American culture. Despite a general downward trend in demand for comedy TV shows on streaming platforms, the demand for sitcoms in the U.S. has remained steady over the past few years, consistently accounting for around 10% of the demand for SVOD TV catalogs, according to Parrot Analytics. This makes the sitcom genre the fourth most in-demand last quarter, tied with animation and just below reality TV.
Beyond their popularity, sitcoms possess two key traits that make them crucial for SVOD platforms’ long-term strategies. The first is longevity. Successful sitcoms enjoy enduring popularity years, and even decades, after their final episodes air. This timeless appeal can be seen in cultural staples like “Friends,” “Seinfeld,” and “The Big Bang Theory,” all of which have sizable episode counts, which contributes greatly to extended engagement.
The second trait is high rewatchability.

Warner Bros Discovery is testing the integration of its linear HBO cable channels through the streaming service Max for a handful of subscribers.
On Wednesday, the company said its linear channels will offer hit shows like “Game of Thrones,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and “Succession” along with documentaries, sports shows and licensed films.
The channels are the same linear networks available on cable and satellite. Some services, like Amazon’s Prime Video Channels, The Roku Channel and the Walt Disney Company’s Hulu, have offered access to HBO’s linear feeds over streaming when a customer buys a subscription to Max through those platforms.

Sienna Miller is set to star opposite John Krasinski in the Jack Ryan feature that is in the works at Amazon MGM Studios.
The project is being described as the next evolutionary step to the adventure series that proved to be a hit for the company and will feature several actors from the show reprising their roles, including Wendell Pierce (The Wire) and Michael Kelly (House of Cards).
Jack Ryan season two executive producer and director Andrew Bernstein will helm the film, which has a script penned by Aaron Rabin, who served as a co-executive producer and writer on season four.
The show was based on the characters and so-called “Ryanverse,” created by author Tom Clancy, but took place in modern times. It ran for four seasons on Prime Video, where it is ranked among the streamer’s top three most-watched series globally.

Warner Bros. Discovery officials are providing more details about the initial rollout of its password-sharing rules.
It’s almost time to start thinking about alternatives to sharing someone else’s Max password. The streaming service promised earlier in 2024 that it would begin restricting customers’ ability to let someone outside their household use their account, and will be following through on that pledge in the next few weeks. That’s according to Warner Bros. Discovery streaming chief J.B. Perrette, who discussed the matter at the Wells Fargo Technology, Media and Telecom Summit on Tuesday.
Key Details: The streamer’s initial efforts to stop password sharing will begin next week. Perrette says that the rollout of restrictions will start with “gentle” reminders to Max customers who are sharing the most. Restrictions against account sharing will grow more stringent in 2025. George Costanza is a mystery. How can one man be so selfish, neurotic, petty, and just all-around pathetic? He doesn't really have any positive qualities. He's a bad friend, a worse boyfriend, and a deplorable employee. The biggest mystery surrounding George may be that anyone is his friend in the first place.
For our eternal amusement, we're glad people were foolish enough to allow George into their lives for nine glorious seasons. If you're making a Greatest Sitcom Characters list, he's almost certainly going to rank the highest out of anyone from the "Seinfeld" ensemble. Only one man would plow through a living room full of children and one elderly woman with a walker upon whiffing a kitchen fire. Yes, he's the only man on the planet who'd cause a multi-family crisis by attempting to reel a marble rye, via fishing rod,...

Criminal Minds has raged on as one of the top-rated police procedural thriller-mystery crime dramas in the history of entertainment, with its suspensive and mysterious elements perfectly captivating viewers worldwide. Throughout the course of its 17-season long run, the drama has not only been led by a star-studded cast but has also been met with quite a few guest appearances.

"Seinfeld" and "Curb Your Enthusiasm" creator Larry David has been upfront about how much of his writing is inspired by his life. For instance, when he was working at "Saturday Night Live," David once angrily quit the show, only to show up the next day and keep working as if nothing happened. George Costanza (Jason Alexander), who was Larry's stand-in character on "Seinfeld," did the same thing years later.
When it came to inventing Kramer (Michael Richards), Jerry's zany, intrusive next-door neighbor, Larry once again turned to real life for inspiration. "The character of Kramer was based on my real next-door neighbor, Kenny Kramer," David once explained in a featurette about the making of the series. "My neighbor was a guy who would come in, take a lot of my food, and he was a guy who didn't work, really, or if he did nobody really knew what he did.

Plaintiffs in the suit say the company intentionally misled them about the harm that the departure of the NBA would have.
There’s not much time left to watch the NBA on TNT or Max — relatively speaking, anyway. Live NBA games will officially depart from TNT and Max in the United States starting with the 2025 regular season, after Wbd settled a last-ditch lawsuit intended to claw back one of the three broadcast and streaming rights packages the league sold earlier this year. Now, however, the company faces a lawsuit from investors who claim that it misled them about the hit the company’s value would take if it lost live NBA games.
Key Details: Richard Collura seeks class-action status for his suit, claiming that Wbd willfully misled investors about the impacts of losing the NBA. The complaint says Wbd execs made “materially false and misleading statements regarding the company’s business.

Exclusive: Curb Your Enthusiasm alum Jeff Schaffer is set to direct Blow Up the Chat, a new comedy in development at Warner Bros and Temple Hill, sources tell Deadline.
Scripted by Amos Vernon & Nunzio Randazzo, the film watches as a group of best’ friends private and wildly inappropriate, year-long group chat is hacked, which risks upending their individual lives and friendship with one another.
Marty Bowen, Wyck Godfrey, and Isaac Klausner will produce for Temple Hill, with Zach Hamby overseeing the project for Warner Bros.
A nine-time Emmy nominee perhaps best known for showrunning, exec producing and directing HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm, which just came to an end after 12 seasons, Schaffer also co-created FX’s acclaimed Lil Dicky comedy Dave, as well as FX’s The League, which ran for seven seasons. In film, Schaffer has directed the DreamWorks sex comedy EuroTrip, also contributing to the writing of Sacha Baron Cohen...

Review: Michael Schur’s track record should speak for itself. After writing memorable episodes of The Office, Schur went on to co-create both Parks & Recreation and Brooklyn Nine-Nine and created the brilliant The Good Place. As much as we still see Michael J. Fox at various events – whether to bring awareness to Parkinson’s or partake in Back to the Future reunions – we still miss him. That is, we miss seeing him perform. While Fox hasn’t had a substantial role on the big screen since 1996’s The Frighteners – made a few years after his Parkinson’s diagnosis and two years before he even announced it – he has leaned into television with recurring roles on shows like Boston Legal, Rescue Me and The Good Wife, all of which earned him acclaim. And just like we miss seeing him on screens both big and small, Fox himself misses certain aspects of the art.
Speaking with Entertainment Tonight, Michael J. Fox said what really misses about acting is the collaborative process that a set brings, saying, “You go into something and you say, ‘I know what to do here,...

Larry David became a client of business manager Matt Lichtenberg in 1984, shortly after David landed a writing job on “Saturday Night Live.” David wasn’t looking for representation at the time, but Matt Lichtenberg cornered him outside the Improv comedy club in New York and insisted that David take him on as a manger.
A year later, when David was let go from “SNL,” he began a four-year run in which he “did not earn a penny.” The memory of how Lichtenberg kept him on as a client and kept paying his bills in those lean years caused David, the wildly successful co-creator and showrunner of “Seinfeld” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” to choke up slightly when he presented Lichtenberg on Wednesday with the kudo as Business Manager of the Year at Variety‘s Business Managers Breakfast presented by City National Bank.
