Sam and his mother, Dora, arrive in Skellerton and try to settle in with their relatives.

Sam's grandfather takes him on a tour of the local pit. Meanwhile, the Labour Exchange is looking for Sam's mother, Dora.

As Sam is being bullied in school, Dora begins a new relationship with Alan Dakin. Sam does not like this and runs away from home.

Sam is found. Ethel reveals to George that she is pregnant, much to his delight. Dora and Alan begin looking for a house together.

Sam is taken on a day out to the seaside with Dora, Alan, George, and Ethel. Upon their return, Dora reveals that she is pregnant with Alan's child.

Dora and Alan set up a family home together. Ethel gives birth to a baby girl.

A package arrives from Sam's father, but Jack chooses to keep this knowledge from everyone, including the boy. George is caught in a cave-in at the mine.

The pit workers are given notice of an impending work stoppage at the mine. A pregnant Dora has a fall.

The strike at the mine continues. Sam's father writes asking for money so he can return home from Canada. Dora gives birth to a baby boy - but dies in childbirth.

Devastated over Dora's death, Alan decides to go south to look for work, leaving his mother to care for the new baby. George goes with him.

Alan and George are disillusioned in the south and George decides to return home. Frank worries about Sam's education and Jack wants to send him to a charity boarding school.

Sam hates the boarding school and longs to go home, but he cannot due to an outbreak of diphtheria in Skellerton. But after an incident at school, Sam leaves anyway and walks the fifty miles home.

Toby sets up a garment factory in the old chapel, providing work for the women of Skellington, leaving the men at home. Sam finally goes down the pit with his grandfather.
