Moana 2 is enjoying a historic adventure at the box office, where it has shattered record after record since its launch Thanksgiving eve.
Heading into the holiday, Walt Disney Animation’s sequel was tracking to open to an already huge $125 million to $135 million for the long five-day weekend (Wednesday-Sunday). However, the music-infused family film served up a magical $225 million for the five days, including $139.7 for the three-day weekend, thanks to the pent-up demand to witness the continued adventures of the fearless Moana, voiced once again by Auli’i Cravalho, and the demigod Maui, likewise voiced again by Dwayne Johnson. Final numbers are up from Sunday’s five-day estimate of $221 million and three-day estimate of $135.5 million.
The Thanksgiving menu also included Universal’s record-smashing Wicked and Paramount’s Gladiator II. The trio of films resulted in the biggest Thanksgiving of all time in terms of domestic holiday revenue, which reached $420 million — more...

When Moana was first released in 2016, Walt Disney Animation Studios, the main-line, non-Pixar producer of Disney cartoons, had released exactly two sequels: One in 1990 and one in 2000. Sequelizing classics was strictly a novelty business: The Rescuers Down Under got a why-not tryout in 1990, while Fantasia 2000 realized Walt Disney’s...

It may seem hard to believe now, but there was a time when Disney didn’t really do sequels to their animated films – or at least not theatrically. Outside of The Rescuers Down Under back in 1990, for a long time, Disney always did cheap, direct-to-video sequels to their biggest hits, which boggles the mind now given that of the ten highest-grossing movies of the year (so far), nine of them are sequels. Yet, in the nineties, Disney’s sequels to their animated classics, Aladdin and The Lion King, went straight to video, as the company focused on original projects as far as the big screen went. This all changed with Toy Story 2. Initially, it was supposed to be another cheap direct-to-video sequel, but the brain trust at Pixar balked and ended up redeveloping the film as a full-on theatrical feature. The result was one of their best-loved and most successful films ever,...

Here’s a box office benchmark you don’t see often, if at all: A major Hollywood star has two No. 1 theatrical release openings in the same calendar month, that accomplishment going to Dwayne Johnson.
For the month of November, Johnson saw a No. 1 opening in the Amazon MGM Studios Red One on Nov. 15 with $32.1M and the star is helping deliver the best Thanksgiving opening of all-time with Disney’s Moana 2 which has the potential to hit $200M over 5-days.
In fact, over the Wednesday-Sunday holiday stretch, moviegoers are getting their double dose of Johnson spending around $218M for both Moana 2 and Red One.
From what we’ve culled, along with our chat with distribution sources, no other star has ever pulled this box office record off. There have been some close call instances where stars have opened two No. 1 films within a month of each other,...

The return of Moana to the big screen in Moana 2 turns out to be a pretty flat party. Here’s our review of the film.
Some backstory. Back when Pixar was embarking on its third film, Toy Story 2, the plan at that stage was to release it as a straight to video movie. However, it became clear during the making of the movie that it was a little bit special, and deserved an upgrade. For my money, the best of the series.
In the case of Moana, the 2016 film was arguably – and I’ll hear pushback from Encanto fans, even if I don’t agree – the last flat-out great movie from Walt Disney Animation Studios. There’s been good stuff since, but nothing on that level.
A year ago though, to us on the outside, as far as we knew Disney was working on a Moana streaming TV series.

In a new series of writers revealing their go-to comfort film, an unlikely action flop gets a stirring recommendation
When I’m in a truly bad mood, about the state of the world or just the state of myself, traditionally uplifting movies don’t cut it for me. It’s not the movies’ fault, necessarily; it’s the act of pressing play on even a feel-great movie like His Girl Friday or Toy Story 2 that nags at me as overly self-conscious. It’s hard for the movie to have its desired effect when I’m giving it such a personal, specific mandate to make me feel better – a truly impossible form of video on demand. Instead, I need something that activates my lizard brain, something that goes straight to the pleasure center of my imagination, rather than engaging directly with my emotions. In recent years, that movie is Alita: Battle Angel.

Believe it or not, there used to be a time where movie sequels were actually an incredibly rare thing. As it was, audiences felt that movies and even tv shows should have definitive stories and points that they were trying to make and why would anybody bother making a sequel to what should have been a conclusive story? But now, in an era where Hollywood values established IP and fanbases more than any potential original project, sequels have become the norm. It isn’t necessarily a bad thing that sequels have taken over cinemas, provided that the sequels are just as good as the originals and come out with their own original plot-lines. Like all movies, whether or not a person might enjoy a surplus of sequels is preferential and is more so dependent on the subject material, especially if it’s regarding a franchise that the audience has taken a liking too.

Hugh Grant has starred in all kinds of films over the years. Playing the perfect love interest for a rom-com, to an Oompa-Loompa in Wonka, and now starring in the horror film Heretic, it is safe to say that it does not get more diverse than his filmography. However, there is one film that managed to turn his image sour in the eyes of the Hollywood elites.

Okay, Toy Story fans—brace yourselves. Toy Story 3 almost took a wild turn, and not the kind that would’ve made you sob uncontrollably at the end. Nope.
Michael Arndt, the screenwriter, spilled the beans on how the first draft was a wacky comedy chase scene. Forget the tear-jerking incinerator scene and the final goodbye to Andy—this ending had the toys running for their lives on Rc cars, planes, and motorcycles. Not precisely a tear-fest, huh?
Arndt spilled the tea in an interview with Script Apart, revealing that in the original script, the toys had to race back to Andy’s house before he left for college. So far, so good, right? But then, things got really out of hand. The gang stumbles...

This article contains spoilers for the "Toy Story" movies.
When John Lasseter's "Toy Story" was released in 1995, it was a coup for the industry. CGI had been used in films for a decade and there were myriad computer-animated short films, but the first theatrically released, fully-computer-animated feature changed the landscape. It certainly helped that "Toy Story" was a massive success, raking in over $365 million on a mere $30 million budget. The film was also highly acclaimed, sporting a novel concept (your toys are alive when you aren't looking), an excellent screenplay, and a first-rate cast.
After "Toy Story," it felt like the floodgates opened, and a shift from traditionally animated features to fully computer-animated features occurred within the next five years. One might even recall when Disney announced that it would be shuttering its traditional animation studio and only make computer-animated features going forward. This was slightly before its 2004 film "Home on the Range" flopped.

1999 is widely considered to be one of the best years in cinema history. Truthfully, 25 years later, it's not remotely hard to see why. It saw the release of groundbreaking films like "The Matrix," which remains one of the most important sci-fi hits ever made. The likes of "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace," "Toy Story 2," "The Blair Witch Project," "American Pie," "Sleepy Hollow," "Deep Blue Sea," "Eyes Wide Shut," "Fight Club," "The Mummy," and so much more. It's an embarrassment of riches.
Unfortunately, even the best year is going to have its share of misfires. As far as 1999 goes, the biggest misfire of them all (at least by reputation) is unquestionably "The 13th Warrior." Directed by John McTiernan, of "Die Hard" and "Predator" fame,...

Docter’s obvious knack for channeling personal problems into universal stories helped propel the films to both Oscars and staggering box office. The official announcement at D23 of Pixar’s Andrew Stanton writing and directing “Toy Story 5” is a big deal. Stanton has co-written the previous four “Toy Story” films, receiving Oscar nominations for the original and the third film.
But now as a director, he finally gets to be in total control of the franchise he helped establish. So if there was going to be a fifth “Toy Story,” he’s the perfect director for a couple of reasons.
The first is that, since “Wall-e,” Stanton has been fascinated with science fiction and the dangers of ubiquitous technology. The story for the fifth “Toy Story” allows him to double down on that fascination.
“Let’s be real,” Stanton told the packed Honda Center in Anaheim on Friday night. “Toys have some serious competition these days with phones, tablets, and technology everywhere. So, this time around, it’s toys vs. tech.

Disney has confirmed that its $2 billion-plus Frozen IP will get a three-quel in 2027. Disney exec Jennifer Lee, who is also one of the directors of Frozen and Frozen II, released a concept art of the film at the ongoing D23 event. The film was inspired by Christian Andersen’s old fairy tale The Snow Queen. The two films grossed a total of $2.76 billion at the box office.

Lee also hinted at a potential fourth film in the franchise, which obviously draws a comparison to Pixar’s seminal four-part film franchise, Toy Story. From the numbers and the success of Inside Out 2 & Despicable Me 4, the Frozen franchise is likely to surpass the $3 billion-grossing franchise.

We’re obviously completely self-aware that we’re publishing this list the Monday after Deadpool & Wolverine made $205 million at the box office. That’s the whole point of being meta, right? Or if you want to get Merriam-Webster involved, something that “shows or suggests an explicit awareness of itself or oneself as a member of its category: cleverly self-referential.”
That said, when it comes to movies, this kind of self-awareness can cover a wide range of narrative devices. A character quietly acknowledging the audience can be meta. Other times, meta scenes can intentionally break apart a film’s reality. Meta doesn’t even necessarily need to be done for the sake of humor either, as plenty of movies — from Frederico Fellini’s 8½ to the horror thriller Funny Games — get meta without much humorous intention.

Other times, meta scenes can intentionally break apart a film’s reality. Meta doesn’t even necessarily need to be done for the sake of humor either, as plenty of movies — from Frederico Fellini’s 8½ to the horror thriller Funny Games — get meta without much humorous intention.

After their successful collaboration in Saving Private Ryan, Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg joined forces once again to become executive producers on the miniseries Band of Brothers, which was based on historian Stephen E. Ambrose’s 1992 book of the same name. The series dramatizes the history of Easy Company and their participation and sacrifices in World War 2.

True to the title, Hanks and Spielberg found a young cast of actors who went through rigorous physical training sessions as part of the preparation for their roles. When the boot camp proved to be extremely challenging for some of the cast members, the Forrest Gump actor lifted their spirits with an inspiring and motivating speech that left them awestruck.

Inside Out 2 did not feel like a necessary addition to the Pixar canon when it was announced. Why make a sequel to one of the most original, ingenious solo outings in animation history and potentially tamper with the reputation of greatness? Money sure felt like the motivating factor, and Pixar has cashed in to the tune of nearly $1 billion and counting after two-plus weeks at the box office. But jumping inside Riley’s head of emotions for a second time was actually a courageous and rewarding payoff for fans worldwide as they were treated to one of the best sequels in Pixar’s history.
What makes a great Pixar sequel though? It’s not the first time the company has successfully returned to the same universe for another go-round, but Inside Out 2 certainly created a new blueprint for future sequel outings. Let’s look at how the movie...

Well, now we’re in “prime” Summer movie season mode as one of the big “crowd-pleasing” studios drops its 28th feature film into the multiplexes this weekend. Oh, and it is truly animated with eye-popping visuals and splendid imaginative designs. And after the animal stars dominating the cartoon landscape this year with Kung Fu Panda and Garfield, we’re focusing on a human being, Well, mostly what’s going on in this teenager’s head, so we’re revisiting a set of creatures based on emotions and meeting a bunch of new “feelings”. Of course, I’m speaking of Pixar, who have decided to produce a sequel to a much-admired Oscar-winning 2015 “dramedy/fantasy”, after several interesting original flicks like Soul, Turning Red, and Elemental (so don’t think they’re just exploiting their “IP”). Yes, it’s been nine years, but animation can “tweak” time, so it’s only been...

There was a time when Pixar could do no wrong. As a result, everyone was shocked when Toy Story spin-off Lightyear underperformed, though that did come after former Disney CEO Bob Chapek made the controversial decision to dump titles like Luca, Soul, and Turning Red on Disney+ during the pandemic.
Elemental struggled at the box office last year (even if it managed to shake off "flop" status once its theatrical run concluded) and all eyes are on Inside Out 2 to now "save" Pixar.
The sequel is currently eyeing a $135 million global debut and early reviews could help it exceed expectations at the box office.
As we write this, the Inside Out follow-up sits at 92% on Rotten Tomatoes with 114 reviews counted. According to the Critics Consensus, "Spicing things up with the wrinkle of teenage angst, Inside Out 2 clears the head and warms the heart by living up to its predecessor's emotional intelligence.

When Inside Out hit theaters in 2015, Pixar’s deep dive into an 11-year-old’s brain quickly ascended to top-tier status; the combination of old-school cartoonishness, a color scheme that left no hue untouched, a celebrity voice cast with comic chops, and a perfect combo of childlike imagination and mature insight into the moment you start leaving childhood behind established it as one of the company’s best works to date. After Toy Story, Toy Story 2, and A Bug’s Life, John Lasseter directed his fourth film collaboration with Disney and Pixar, Cars (2006). By the time Pixar animated the story based on anthropomorphic cars, technology had advanced far from what they had used for their revolutionary first film in 1995. According to the reports, the computers used for animating Cars were 1000 times faster than those used in Toy Story.

However, the development of Cars began in 1998 right after the production of A Bug’s Life. It took years for Disney to come out with the film that had clean animations and used some advanced animation techniques. The efforts paid off handsomely as Cars became the sixth-highest-grossing film of 2006.

One of the most celebrated comedies of 1999 is “Notting Hill,” starring Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant. Written by Richard Curtis and directed by Roger Michell, the film tells of a famous movie actress named Anna Scott who falls in love with a small-town England bookstore owner named William Thacker. Released 25 years ago in May 1999, “Notting Hill” was a major box office success, grossing $364 million worldwide on a $42 million budget. Read on for more about the “Notting Hill” 25th anniversary.
The nation’s critics gave mostly positive reviews to “Notting Hill,” unusual for a studio romantic comedy. Derek Elley in Variety wrote, “[The film] has buckets to spare of that rarest screen commodity — genuine, engaging charm — plus a cast and production values that fully deliver.” Wesley Morris in San Francisco Examiner said, “Director Michell isn’t content to rest on his stars’ slapstick laurels, mining instead the more sophisticated if subversive socio-romantic pratfalls in Curtis’ script.

There is no denying that Toy Story is one of the greatest pieces of animated storytelling. The film represents the true extent of the medium and was one of the first to showcase it on such a large scale. Cartoons no longer needed to be two dimensional, and these sorts of films could hold so much more meaning than anyone could have imagined.

After this, when fans could not think things could get better, Pixar released Toy Story 2. The film has been regarded as a masterpiece everywhere, and its 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes only reinforces it.
However, many of its fans would not know what actually happened behind the scenes, during the production of the movie. It would seem that the animators and crew of the film had to break their backs trying to meet the deadlines they were given.

See the line where the sky meets the sea? In 2016, audiences heeded the call of "Moana," capping off a fantastic year for Disney Animation that also saw eventual Best Animated Feature Film Oscar winner "Zootopia" top over a billion dollars at the box office. Closing in on a decade later, however, the House That Mickey Built has fallen on harder times after suffering one of its costliest box office misfires ever with "Strange World" and releasing what was intended to be the crown jewel in its 100th-anniversary celebration, "Wish," to middling reviews and even worse financial returns. It's under these circumstances that Bob Iger, fresh off having un-retired from his position as Disney's CEO, has announced further adventures with both the furry members of the Zootopia Police Department (Zpd) and the studio's beloved Pacific Islander princess.

Disney’s and Pixar’s movies are full of easter eggs, which are a popular way of entertaining fans, as they are not just looking for them, but are also interpreting them and the meaning of their presence in the work. Such easter eggs are present in other works as well, not just movies, but this discussion is about a very special easter egg that potentially connects two big franchises created by Pixar.
The first one is Toy Story, which basically launched Pixar into orbit and became a critically acclaimed and beloved animated franchise with a fifth installment on the way, while the second one is Monsters, Inc., a very popular series as well which managed to become a standalone franchise with some beloved moments and characters. And while Pixar has never officially connected any of its individual animated universes, some fans think that a Monsters, Inc. easter egg confirms...

It’s been five years since Toy Story 4, the critically acclaimed fourth installment in one of Pixar’s greatest animated franchises, was released. While a sequel was announced back in February 2023 by Bob Iger, the movie is still not even close to being released, but we are happy to say that we finally have an official release date for the upcoming Toy Story 5 movie, which is set for a June 19, 2026 release. Yes, it’s a long wait, but Toy Story fans will have gotten used to it by now since the shortest span between two movies from the franchise was an enormous four years, which passed between the release of Toy Story and Toy Story 2.

It's astonishing to look back at John Lasseter's 1995 film "Toy Story" and regard how rudimentary it looks by today's standards. "Toy Story" was the first widely distributed CGI-animated feature film, and it felt overwhelmingly revolutionary at the time. Many were astonished at how expressive and fun CGI characters could be, and the film's success effectively ushered in a sea change in the animation world. In 2024, traditional cel animation is incredibly uncommon, and CGI is the naturally assumed standard.
CGI characters are designed to essentially be "puppets," in terms of their elasticity. Animators, at least at the time, were forced to stay on-model, only able to expand eyeballs or raise eyebrows so high. It wouldn't be for years that CG characters could mutate, squash, and stretch the way hand-drawn characters could. "Toy Story" benefitted from being about, well, toys. Its characters were all made of plastic, so there was an...

While David Zaslav and Bob Iger’s tax-optimization strategy of deleting films and TV shows from their streamers has triggered plenty of agita among creators, the custodians of Hollywood’s digital era have an even greater fear: wholesale decay of feature and episodic files. Behind closed doors and NDAs, the fragility of archives is a perpetual Topic A, with pros sweating the possibility that contemporary pop culture’s master files might be true goners, destined to the same fate as so many vanished silent movies, among them Alfred Hitchcock’s second feature, The Mountain Eagle, and Ernst Lubitsch’s Oscar-winning The Patriot.

Seemingly out of nowhere, Disney not only announces Moana 2, but reveals that the film is arriving this November. More here.
How’s this for a surprise announcement. If you go by the rule of thumb that a Walt Disney Animation Studios movie takes three to four years to bring to fruition at the very least, then to learn of major new release with roughly ten months’ notice is quite something. Especially in the modern era of leaks and internet gossip.
Yet at its shareholder meeting overnight, Disney sprung the news that not only is a Moana 2 animated movie coming, but we’ll be seeing it this very year.
It comes off the back of two commercial disappointments for Walt Disney Animation Studios on the bounce: 2022’s underappreciated Strange World and last winter’s 100th birthday celebration movie Wish.
Moana 2 must be very welcome tonic for those who count the money around the place.

Theatrical movies truly came back in 2023. Despite a major strike and the ongoing effects of the Covid pandemic, audiences returned in droves to watch big releases. From the twin tentpoles of Barbie and Oppenheimer to the more niche faves such as Five Nights at Freddy’s, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, and John Wick: Chapter 4, the cinematic slate of 2023 gave fans of every variety a reason to get back to the cinemas.
Moviemakers hope to continue this trend in 2024, and the key strategy seems to be sequels, prequels, and remakes. Some of these movies come from the artists who captured audiences’ hearts in the first place, while others come from fresh faces, hoping to infuse a familiar tale with new energy.

As always, the hosts of “The View” went all out with their Halloween costumes on Tuesday, this year celebrating their parent network. In honor of the Disney100 celebration, the women hosted the day’s show dressed as their favorite Disney characters.
Granted, the episode started in a fairly spooky way. In the opening minutes, viewers were treated to footage of a horse strutting up to the studio, ridden by none other than The Headless Horseman — er, in this case, Horsewoman.
As the episode kicked off in earnest, it was revealed that host Whoopi Goldberg opted to go with the Headless Horseman as her costume..

Streaming has forever changed the way we consume and experience movies and TV. One of the small joys (and anxieties) that has all but disappeared in the streaming era is channel surfing — the joy of discovering something new by chance, and also the pressure of not knowing when you might watch a certain title again.
Except, the essence of channel surfing is still there, in the way streaming platforms remove and add titles every month. The pressure of only having a certain amount of time before a title disappears forever is still there, only you have a month's notice. Film fans talk about the 1990s as another Golden Age of cinema. Not only is there the jam-packed year of 1999, which gave us classics such as The Matrix, Toy Story 2, and The Talented Mr. Ripley, but the 90s also saw the rise of new auteurs, including Quentin Tarantino, Paul Thomas Anderson, David Fincher, and Guillermo del Toro. Hollywood turned its attention to indie and foreign films, enriching a moviegoing experience that still featured fan-favorite blockbusters.
But to really see how good the 90s were, we can’t just look at the hits. Rather, the flops tell us the true tale of the decade’s quality – the movies that audiences skipped at the time but have proven their worth in the years that followed. Here are the best flops of the 1990s; films that couldn’t find a wide enough audience upon release, but still deserve attention today.

Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, the sequel to Aardman Animation’s 2000 stop-motion hit, is arriving 23 years after the original. Mused director Sam Fell during a panel at Deadline’s Contenders London, “At the end of the first one, you’re kind of a bit sick of chickens. It takes about three or four years to make these things so I think everyone wanted to do new things.”
At the time, he also remarked, “Animated sequels weren’t a big thing back then, Toy Story 2 was probably the first great animated sequel.”
A follow-up had been “in the background” and there were “brainstorming sessions,” but the original Chicken Run “is so brilliant, you can’t do something less than that,” Fell said.
Fast-forward to 2016 and Fell ran into the previous film’s co-director Peter Lord who told him, “We’ve got it, we figured it out.” The trick was a single line: “This time,...
