Editor’S Note: Much was written about maverick Boyz N The Hood director John Singleton when he died early last year. In the wake of the George Floyd murder, there are several treatments of the Black Wall Street atrocity in the offing, but Singleton and Gregory Poirier had the field all to themselves when they collaborated on Rosewood, a drama woven from historic events of the 1923 Rosewood massacre in Florida, when a white mob killed black people and destroyed their town. Not many could have gotten such a movie made by a major studio back in 1997, but Singleton directed it for Warner Bros. It has taken Poirier, who won the WGA Paul Selvin Award for his work, time to find a handle on his own complicated relationship with Singleton, and that is what makes this guest column most poignant.

Exclusive: Verve is becoming a full-service agency with the launch of a talent team, which will be led by top TV talent agent Sean Grumman. He is leaving WME, where he was a partner in the talent department, to join Verve where he will become the agency’s 8th partner. WME and CAA alum Grumman will bring in other talent agents to build the Verve talent team.
This marks another step in the evolution of Verve, which was launched 10 years ago by WME motion picture lit agents Bill Weinstein, Bryan Besser and Adam Levine. The agency soon expanded into TV lit, and over the last few years also built up an alternative TV operation.
“As the agency continues to grow, we are excited to add Sean’s impeccable taste and client-first approach to both the Verve culture and Verve clients with the launch of our talent team,” the Verve partners said in a joint statement.

HBO Max has a major job on its hands to justify its approximately $15 a month subscription fee, especially given the strong competition out there from established names like Netflix and Amazon Prime. Disney Plus faced a similar challenge last year in arriving onto an already-saturated streaming marketplace, but at least had the advantage of major series like The Mandalorian to promote. While HBO Max will eventually be home to the Snyder cut of Justice League, and has some originals for its first week of availability, the big draw right now is its enormous back-catalogue of movies.
Given the various corporate elements that are going into HBO Max, including the Warner Bros. library, owners AT&T will be hoping that the combination of brand recognition for HBO programming, and a deep bench of movies, will convince people to add a new subscription to their list. Do you like lists? Well, here’s a doozy. Below is everything coming to Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu and Amazon Prime in June 2020.
Though the summer sun is starting to beat down, most of us are still being encouraged to stay indoors for Covid-19 related reasons. It’s not much fun, but at the very least, there’s an absolute ton of stuff landing in June that should distract you from the call of the beach.
Of particular note is the newly launched HBO Max, which is trying to catch the eye of potential subscribers with a red-hot first month. There’s an excellent selection of movies coming on June 1st, with horror titles like An American Werewolf in London (still the best werewolf movie ever made), Final Destinations 1-4, From Dusk til Dawn and Lifeforce.

Welcome to the HBO Max era! WarnerMedia’s streaming giant arrived on May 27 and is absolutely bursting with Warner movies, TV shows, and other titles. But time waits for no man or streaming service and each new month HBO Max will be expected to bring new content to the table. Things get started in June 2020 with the first batch of HBO Max new releases.
To be clear, the majority of the original series coming to HBO Max actually belongs to HBO. Shows like I May Destroy You (June 7), Perry Mason (June 21), and I’ll Be Gone in the Dark (June 28) all belong to HBO…which now just happens to be a part of HBO Max. Confusing stuff, we know, but rest assured that if you have HBO Max you’ll get these shows…and if you only have HBO, you can go ahead and just get HBO Max for the same price anyway.

The TCA panel for the third season of FX drama Snowfall reflected on series co-creator John Singleton in the wake of his death in April at 51 and how they’re continuing to tell the story of his hometown South Central La.

“I think we feel pretty comfortable with telling the story he wanted to tell,” said Snowfall co-creator Dave Andron about the series which goes from a working-class neighborhood to a drug war zone amid the 1980s crack epidemic.

Sony Pictures Entertainment has renamed one of its theaters the John Singleton Theater in honor of the Academy and Emmy Award-nominated director, screenwriter, and producer who died in April.
“We are so pleased that Sony Pictures will be honoring our father in this way,” said Justice and Maasai Singleton. “It is such a fitting tribute given the special place that Columbia Pictures was for him at the beginning of his career. The studio system was incredibly supportive of him in his work, which is something he deeply appreciated. This is especially touching for us. As children we were often brought to the lot while our father worked. Those days were fun and educational, and laid the groundwork for our own careers today.”

Pioneering filmmaker John Singleton passed away on April 28 and, at only 51, too soon. Today, on Be Reel, we reflect primarily on three entries from Singleton’s career: the seminal “Boyz N The Hood” (1991), the endlessly meme-able “Poetic Justice” (1993) and the unsung achievement “Rosewood” (1997). We were thrilled to be joined by novelist, critic, and podcaster Tochi Onyebuchi (“Beasts Made of Nights“) to unpack Singleton’s significance as a modern mythmaker, a cinematic accumulator of black culture and a quintessential Los Angeles scribe.

John was such a supernova in his youth that we forget that he was only beginning to fully assert his gifts as a director. Kurosawa was 52 when he directed [High and Low]. Hitchcock was 56 when he directed To Catch a Thief. As much as we will treasure his body of work, we were looking forward to the films John would have made in the years ahead.— The Singleton family's official statement on the death of John SingletonThe late John Singleton's first three films—Boyz n the Hood, Poetic Justice, and Higher Learning—formed a trio of resounding accomplishment and earned him a reputation as a prodigious visionary before he'd even turned 30. However, Singleton's career did not end there, instead continuing down (and thereby paving) a narrow path in Hollywood traversed by very few Black filmmakers, filled with blockbuster franchises, remakes, and eventually television. Even then, when there was so much more to be pursued and completed,...

John Singleton loved talking movies. Sometimes it was about the art behind the process; sometimes it was just for the fun of it. Singleton’s shocking death at 51, after suffering a stroke that put him in a coma, brought the usual pull quotes about Boyz N the Hood, the 1991 film that put the then-22-year-old in the record books as the youngest person — and the first African-American — to be nominated for an Oscar as Best Director. His debut put his subsequent career in the shadows. Yet he persevered, following Boyz with Poetic Justice,...

It was nearly three decades ago when writer-director John Singleton’s freshman film “Boyz N the Hood” gave us a compassionate and deeply human story about growing up black and ambitious with a life that is sadly expendable — long before Black Lives Matter rewrote that narrative. He earned not one but two Academy Award nominations for helming the movie and penning the script. Though he didn’t win, “Boyz N the Hood” is still talked about as one of the best and most tragically honest films about young black men, cementing its place in cinematic history and in the hearts of audiences across the globe.
Black humanity was Singleton’s signature, as he went from a story about young black men in the hood to a 1993’s “Poetic Justice,” a moving romantic tale about the relationship between two lyrical underdogs — Justice (Janet Jackson) and Lucky (Tupac Shakur) — who come together...

The director’s mother, Sheila Ward, requested a judge to appoint her temporary conservatorship at the time because Singleton was “unable to properly provide for his personal needs for physical health, food, clothing, or shelter.” Singleton was taken off life support today, April 26. The director’s family confirmed the decision to Deadline.
“It is with heavy hearts we announce that our beloved son, father and friend, John Daniel Singleton will be taken off of life support today,” a spokesperson for the family said in a statement. “This was an agonizing decision, one that our family made, over a number of days, with the careful counsel of John’s doctors… We are grateful to his fans,...

“Boyz n the Hood” writer-director John Singleton was hospitalized earlier this week for what’s being described as “mild” stoke, reports Variety. The filmmaker checked himself into the hospital after experiencing pain his leg following a flight from Costa Rica to the United States, which, also per Variety, potentially contributed to the medical incident.
Singleton burst onto the scene with “Boyz” in 1991, for which he earned Academy Award nominations for both Best Original Screenplay Best Director — the first black filmmaker to receive the latter nod, as well as the youngest at just 23 years old. Now 51, he has since directed the films “Shaft,” “2 Fast 2 Furious,” and “Four Brothers,” among others, in addition to episodes of “Empire,” “American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Yes, Star Wars. But what about all the great John Williams scores from less famous movies? Here are 15 of them...
Cinema's most esteemed and popular film composer, John Williams, turned 85 this year (you might have seen the recent spectacular BBC Proms concert in his honour). Careers don't come more astonishing than that of Williams, nominated for 50 Academy Awards which puts him second only to Walt Disney for the most ever.

However it's all too tempting to boil Williams' career down to the more obvious highlights: Star Wars, the Indy trilogy, Superman, E.T., Jurassic Park and the like. In truth, he's a far more versatile composer than many like to give him credit for, and he's much more than just a big themes guy.

20 years ago today, a car drove down a dark, desolate strip of road as David Bowie crooned, in one of the most fortuitous meetings of song and material cinema’s ever seen, “Funny, how secrets travel.” The film that unspooled over the next 130-or-so minutes left many bemused at first (or second or third) glance, but, two decades later, has become a cornerstone in its director’s career and that decade in cinema. I speak not of John Singleton’s Rosewood, also released on February 21, 1997, but David Lynch‘s Lost Highway, whose nightmare noir plot, brutal violence (even for the auteur in question), and heavy, industrial-drenched soundtrack suggests it was made by an artist at the absolute edge of their sanity — even if its Tm-happy creator would suggest it’s, as per usual, simply a sum of ideas.

The success of Boyz ushered in a new wave of black American cinema, featuring superior performances by Laurence Fishburne and Angela Bassett, and launching the careers of Cuba Gooding Jr., Morris Chestnut, Ice Cube, Nia Long, and Regina King. A quarter century since its momentous debut, Boyz prevails as a reminder of the importance of supporting new and diverse filmmakers in telling their unique and oftentimes personal stories.
