It was announced last Halloween that Amazon MGM Studios was developing a television series based on the Poltergeist franchise, and that project is now coming closer to reality.
Variety reports this afternoon that Kalinda Vazquez (“Fear the Walking Dead”) and Robbie Thompson (“Supernatural”) have come on board the upcoming Poltergeist television series as writers, showrunners, and executive producers.
Variety notes in today’s fresh report, “Exact plot details are under wraps, aside from the fact that the show is inspired by the iconic 1982 horror film.”
Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey will executive produce on behalf of Amblin Television.

The original horror classic, Poltergeist was released in 1982, directed by Tobe Hooper and co-written and produced by Steven Spielberg. JoBeth Williams, Craig T. Nelson and the late Heather O’Rourke starred as a family besieged by supernatural terror in their suburban home.

"The Amityville Horror" is one of the definitive haunted house films, a classic tale about paranormal activity terrorizing a suburban family with swarming flies, mysterious voices, and sudden illness. Even the windows resemble ominous eyes peering down on the unsuspecting victims. The movie taps into the religious undertones popularized by other 1970s releases such as "The Exorcist" and "The Omen," suggesting there is a Satanic force at work that must be destroyed.
Eventually, the new owners George and Kathy Lutz discover the horrifying history of their new home: Ronald DeFeo Jr. murdered his entire family with a rifle one year prior, a Satanic worshipper named John Ketchum once lived on the land, and the house itself was built on a Shinnecock burial ground.
Despite receiving mixed reviews for elements like the cheesy portrayal of a possessed George, "The Amityville Horror" ended up having a significant impact on the horror genre.

Last year, Amazon closed an $8.5 billion acquisition of the film studio MGM, giving them ownership of the studio’s thousands of films and TV shows. Earlier this year, we heard that Poltergeist was one of the six MGM properties Amazon was most interested in doing something with… and now Variety has discovered that a Poltergeist TV series is in early development at Amazon MGM Studios! There are no plot details to share at this time, but Variety has been told “the show will be set within the world of the film”.
Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey are set to executive produce the series for Amblin Television.

Starring JoBeth Williams, Craig T. In an effort to rescue their daughter, the parents consult a parapsychologist and a spiritual medium.

We are nearly ten years removed from the most recent installment in the Poltergeist franchise, with the Gil Kenan-directed remake released back in 2015. That film failed to make a splash of any kind, coming along in the wake of two sequels and a TV series.
So what’s going on with the Poltergeist franchise? Amazon, you may recall, recently acquired MGM, and it looks like Amazon is soon bringing the classic horror franchise back to life.
Variety reports this afternoon that a Poltergeist television series is in early development at Amazon MGM Studios. There is no further information on their plans at this time, however.

For this month’s installment of “TV Terrors” we revisit the ambitious small screen project “Roger Corman Presents,” which aired from 1995 through 1999 on Showtime.
Not many remember this, but back in the nineties, the cable network Showtime was extremely centered on science fiction and horror genre fare. They were the original launch pads for “Stargate Sg-1” and “Poltergeist: The Legacy” before they became syndication mainstays. Hell, even their marketing was catered to the science fiction and horror aesthetic.
Like Cinemax, Showtime sought to work out distribution deals while releasing their own original films for primetime and late night slots. While Cinemax and HBO worked with Stan Winston, Showtime collaborated with the one and only Roger Corman. With him and his studio Concorde Pictures, they would produce a series of low budget films that would air over the course of two seasons. With the banner “Roger Corman Presents,” Corman and company...

And so it was written, that a beast would come in the form of film, and that film would beget others due to profit, and those films would spread across the horror landscape to mostly whispered calls of, “meh”. Not for this little demon, however; as all of The Omen films work for me in one way or another, bringing us to number four and the first for the small screen, Omen IV: The Awakening (1991). The script gets flipped, yet it’s more of the same, and I’m not complaining.
Originally broadcast as part of the Fox Night at the Movies, Omen IV was trounced by ABC’ MacGyver on one side, CBS’ Murphy Brown/Designing Women on the other, and NBC’s Fresh Prince/Blossom on the other other. And as expected, no sins lain upon the critics were forgiven. This thing got roasted on the coals of Hell itself.

You may not realize it but over a decade ago Helen Shaver, well recognized for her work as an actress on such varied projects as The Believers, The Color of Money and The Amityville Horror to her roles on TV, most notably in "Poltergeist: The Legacy," made the transition to working behind the camera and has spent most of her time directing everything from "The Outer Limits" and "The Firm" to, most recently, episodes of History Channel's epic, action-heavy drama "Vikings" and BBC America's "Orphan Black" for which she received a nomination for the 2015 Dgc Best Director Award.

With the recent successes of such TV series as "American Horror Story," "Hannibal" and Showtime's "Penny Dreadful," horror is hot on the small-screen right now -- so much so that in addition to MTV's forthcoming small-screen "Scream" spinoff, TV studios are in the midst of bringing a horde of cinematic fright-film properties to television, ranging from "Shutter Island" to "The Devil's Advocate" to "The Mist." In light of this, I've taken a look back at eight previous horror movie-to-tv translations and analyzed why they hit -- or didn't -- with audiences. "Bates Motel" (A&E) Based on: "Psycho" Aired: 2013-present Why it did (or didn't) work:a great pedigree ("Lost" showrunner Carlton Cuse), a terrific cast (Vera Farmiga, Freddie Highmore) and generally positive critical notices gave "Bates Motel" a sheen of respectability that worked well in this Golden Age of prestige television. The show has so far aired three successful seasons...

Two related developments were concurrently unfolding in the television world in the mid 1980s. One, Steven Spielberg created “Amazing Stories,” an anthology series (like “Tales From The Crypt," which would follow it by just a few years) that debuted in the fall of 1985. Two, Martin Scorsese, whose films weren’t doing so wonderfully at the moment, turned his talents to TV (and horror) for the first time in his career. It’s only natural that the two friends’ paths would cross on an episode of “Amazing Stories.” Scorsese made his small screen debut with the program’s 19th episode, “Mirror Mirror,” which originally aired March 9, 1986. In the half hour episode, written by Joseph Minion, a much younger Sam Waterston plays Jordan Manmouth, a slightly acerbic yet incredibly successful horror novelist who becomes tormented by a mysterious black-robed figure only he can see that inhabits mirrors. Helen Shaver (of the “Poltergeist: The Legacy...

Exclusive: Syfy has acquired U.S. basic cable rights to all 39 episodes of Starz‘s Spartacus. That includes the three seasons of the swords-and-sandals drama as well as the six-part prequel Gods Of The Arena. Spartacus will make its Syfy debut June 26 and will air at 10 Pm, following original series Defiance and Dominion. The Spartacus deal comes 16 years after then-5-year-old Sci Fi Channel made its biggest acquisition pact to date, spending $150 million for the exclusive basic cable rights to three other Showtime series, Stargate Sg-1, The Outer Limits and Poltergeist: The Legacy. Stargate and Poltergeist went on to become original series on Sci Fi, which ordered additional seasons — five for Stargate and one for Poltergeist. Stargate became a signature series for Sci Fi, spawning a franchise. When I was a kid my dad used to have tapes upon tapes of movies he had taped off TV, typically uncut and usually filled with all the “goodies” Case in point, Screwballs. Screwballs was recorded in LP format and came just after Caddyshack. While I’m not entirely sure how I was allowed to watch the uncut, non-television purified version of Caddyshack at as twelve, well I thank my lucky stars that dear old mum never figured it out. At the time I didn’t know that Roger Corman was in anyway associated with the picture. Figures. Giant, low budget monster movies and loosely based Edgar Allen Poe adaptations certainly give way to comedic representations of large ta ta’s pirouetting across the screen like sugar plum fairies on LSD. So for the boobs. For the sense of humor grown by repeated viewings of said film. For the VHS...

Actor Michael Sarrazin, whose roles in the genre have ranged from The Creature in the 1973 TV movie "Frankenstein: The True Story" to a small supporting part in FeardotCom, has passed away in Montreal after a brief battle with cancer. He was 70.
Aside from the aforementioned appearances, along with a few more on TV's "The Outer Limits" and "Poltergeist: The Legacy", Sarrazin was best known (and beloved) by horror fans for his portrayal of the titular character in director J. Lee Thompson's 1975 classic The Reincarnation of Peter Proud. In the non-genre realm, Sarrazin's greatest acclaim came for his performance opposite Jane Fonda in Sydney Pollack's Depression era-set They Shoot Horses, Don't They?.
Sarrazin was born Jacques Michel André Sarrazin in Quebec City in 1940. "Michael was one of the most talented, generous and committed actors I have ever worked with," George Mihalka, who directed Sarrazin in 1993's La Florida, told the Montreal Gazette.

Tremors? Nightbreed? Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat? 976-evil? Are all on the list this year. And though there were not huge horror wins in sound editing through screenplays, the Technical Awards never cease to bring out the horror veterans. But among all the winners, the Academy also honored some great loses in 2010. And though they mentioned some of our heroes, Dennis Hooper (Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2), Kevin McCarthy (Invasion of the Body Snatchers) and Dino de Laurentiis (King Kong), they did not mention Zelda Rubinstein or Corey Haim. With Halloween weekend now underway it's time for us to search the wonderful video world of SlashControl to find any and all material related to the holiday. Here are a few gems that we discovered.
'Poltergeist: The Legacy' -- Having nothing to do with the 'Poltergeist' film trilogy, this late '90s, Canadian TV series told the story of a secret society known as The Legacy and their goals to protect humankind from the dangers of the occult. Originally airing on Showtime, the program eventually made it to the SciFi Channel during its last year.
All totaled, 'Poltergeist: The Legacy' ran 88 episodes and four seasons. SlashControl offers viewers a chance to watch all of the episodes from the first and second seasons.

Horror fanatics are still buzzing like chainsaws over the Academy Awards’ genre montage. Anywhere there could be a conversation about it online, there was one. Many were upset over the Twilight ‘tweens’ participation, as if their mere presence sent a message about the state of scary in Hollyweird, USA.
A few seemed happy, though, to just get a glimpse of their beloved Evil Dead and Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 if only for a few seconds. But many called the selections generic and thoughtless, demanding the likes of Demons and TerrorVision instead (well, maybe not TerrorVision; that was just me).
How about Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer? Re-Animator? It’s Alive? Tombs of the Blind Dead? Coffin Joe? No list is perfect, but with a bit more care and a phone call to any one of us, the Oscars could have elevated that section into a real scream. Or maybe they...

A lot of collections hit store shelves this week including three horror sets, a Sherlock Holmes four-pack, three sci-fi quartets, and a package from 20th Century Fox consisting of The Fly, The Omen, and Independence Day in honor of "75 years of award-winning drama". In addition, fans of the series Poltergeist: The Legacy finally get Season 2 on disc, albeit in the form of an on demand recorded DVD-r.
Definitely the pick of the week is the disaster porn extravaganza 2012, but if that's not your thing, then what about Four different versions of Alice in Wonderland? We've got three feature films -- from 1933, 1966, and 1999 -- and a 2009 miniseries from Syfy. Other options include a re-release of Harryhausen's Clash of the Titans in a keepcase DVD or Blu-ray Book version, a special edition of The Wraith (one of those films that definitely cannot deny its 80s heritage), and B-movie homage Bitch Slap.

Character actress Zelda Rubinstein was best known for her role in the 1982 horror film Poltergeist. She starred as psychic Tangina Barrons, who’s small stature and childlike voice added more chills to the 1982 horror film about demonic forces at a suburban home. She reprised her role in the two sequels Poltergeist II: The Other Side (1986) and Poltergeist III (1988).
Rubinstein was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on May 28, 1933. She worked as a medical technician, before embarking upon an acting career in the early 1980s. the 4′3″ actress was cast in the 1981 film Under the Rainbow, and she became an outspoken critic of the way little people portraying Munchkins in the film were depicted. She soon formed the Michael Dunn Memorial Repertory Theater Company in Los Angeles to give acting opportunities to other little people.
Though of small size, she also made a large impression in the films Anguish (1987), Teen Witch (1989), Guilty as Charged...

All right, Fangoria Campers. You may recall that in a prior installment (read it here) I tackled the idea of the Best Horror on TV. Ever. I listed a number of appropriate series possibilities, and invited you to kick other nominees into the list. What we’re going to do now is narrow that list down to 15. You give me your top Five based on the list, and I’ll compile the top 15 nominees for a later installment. I ask that you stick to the list; however, if you offer a compelling case for a show that I or the commenting readers missed the first time around, I might be convinced to add it.
So now, the list:
Buffy the Vampire Slayer Angel The Twilight Zone The X-Files Dark Shadows Tales from the Crypt Tales from the Darkside Night Gallery Kolchak; The Night Stalker Supernatural Twin Peaks Friday the 13th:...

Apologies to the legions of Fango Faithful: inasmuch as I've been trying to get on a regular schedule with Unkillable Classics, a number of obstacles have thrown their limbs in the way. No matter. We're forging ahead. For this installment, I'd initially considered discussing Let The Right One In, but I'm almost afraid of overexposing it in a way at this point. Maybe we'll give it some time and come back. For the moment, though, I'd like to swing away from film and discuss a different kind of classic: TV. I'm inviting you, the reader, to help me divine the greatest horror-related TV shows of all time.
Here's how we'll do this: I'm going to kick out a list of a few dozen classic series. You can respond with some that I may have neglected to include. From there, the next few installments of Unkillable Classics will follow this thread,...

Wonderin’ where the Chicago Fango schedule is? Well, we’re still tweaking it because we have a few surprise guests! We are happy to report that Jeffrey Combs, the Re-animator himself, will be attending Fangoria’s Weekend of Horrors, to be held this coming March 6-8 at the Wyndham Chicago O’Hare Hotel (6810 North Mannheim Road, Rosemont, Il).
In addition, Ashley Laurence is back in the lineup! The actress from Hellraiser, Hellbound: Hellraiser II and Hellraiser: Hellseeker, plus Lightning Bug, Red, Warlock III and Lurking Fear, will be attending on Saturday, while Combs (also best known for From Beyond, Deep Space Nine, Pit And The Pendulum, The Frighteners, The 4400 and many more) hits the stage on Sunday. In other convention news, sadly, directors Tobe Hooper and R.W. Goodwin had to bow out due to unexpected commitments. The full Fango schedule will be live tomorrow morning. Other guests comin’ to...

The independent horror film Plague Town, which Fango’s Michael Gingold called “a nightmare captured on film,” will make its Midwest premiere at the fast-approaching Chicago edition of Fangoria’s Weekend of Horrors, to be held March 6-8 at the Wyndham Chicago O’Hare Hotel (6810 North Mannheim Road, Rosemont, Il). The screening will be introduced by writer/director David Gregory.
Plague Town is about a group of American travelers lost in the Irish countryside who run afoul of a group of bloodthirsty, disfigured children. Gregory (pictured with actress Kate Aspinwall and victim) makes his feature debut with the movie, having previously helmed nearly 100 genre documentaries and DVD features, including Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Shocking Truth, Portrait: The Making of Henry, Inside Manhunter, Tom Savini: The Early Years, The Godfathers of Mondo and many more.

Veteran X Files producer/director R.W. Goodwin (pictured), whose new creature-feature comedy Alien Trespass opens this spring from Roadside Attractions, has joined the lineup of the next Chicago edition of Fangoria’s Weekend of Horrors, to be held March 6-8 at the Wyndham Chicago O’Hare Hotel (6810 North Mannheim Road, Rosemont, Il). Goodwin produced over 70 episodes of The X Files, and directed nine of them.
Alien Tresspass, which stars Will & Grace’s Eric McCormack, Autopsy’s Robert Patrick and The Wonder Years’ Dan Lauria, concerns an Earthly encounter with extraterrestrials both good and bad. Not a spoof or parody, but pretty much a straight film that could have played on the same bill as It Came From Outer Space, Alien Trespass has won raves on the festival circuit. You can find out more here and see a couple of exclusive pics here. Accompanying Goodwin will be his wife Sheila Larkin,...

Columbo is one of television’s most beloved characters thank to the sophisticated writing of Richard Levinson and William Link in addition to the performance from Peter Falk. The rumpled detective appeared for seven seasons on the NBC Sunday Mystery Movie and then returned for a series of telefilms in the late 1980s.
All seven seasons were collected between 2004 and 2006 with the 1989 set of telefilms released in 2007.
Universal is finally releasing the 1990 set of telefilms on February 3 according to TV Shows on DVD. The set of six episodes will come on three discs and retail for $26.98. The titles for the record are:
• "Columbo Cries Wolf"
• "Agenda for Murder"
• "Rest in Peace, Mrs. Columbo"
• "Uneasy Lies the Crown"
• "Murder in Malibu"
• "Columbo Goes to College"
