The Billboard 200 albums chart measures the top releases during the weekly tracking period every Friday through Thursday. While it used to be determined strictly by record sales, the ever-changing landscape of music consumption led Billboard to update its methodology for the 21st century.
In 2014, Billboard started considering multiple metrics of music success, including online streams and individual track sales, in addition to the traditional album sales that previously made up the entirety of the Billboard 200’s chart determinations. An album sale currently counts as one album unit. Sales of 10 individual tracks also counts as one unit. But an artist needs 3,750 ad-supported streams or 1,250 paid subscription streams to equal one unit. Then in 2020 Billboard began counting music videos on platforms like YouTube.

As a singer, Whitney Houston needs no introduction. As a Christmas movie star, though, she may come across as somewhat more obscure. Despite this, she found success on that avenue of life as well. Not only did she star in the surprisingly good 1996 Christmas film "The Preacher's Wife," but she also did so opposite the great Denzel Washington, and earned plenty of money for her efforts.
A remake of the 1947 film "The Bishop's Wife" (itself based on the 1928 book of the same name), "The Preacher's Wife" is a fantasy comedy-drama about Henry Biggs (Courtney B. Vance), a stressed-out reverend who's going through a crisis of faith while his church is standing in the way of a real estate mogul's (Gregory Hines) construction project. Fortunately, an angel named Dudley (Washington) and Biggs' wife Julia (Houston) are there to support the preacher. Unfortunately, it seems that the two are also falling in love.

Kevin Costner has built a long career both as an actor and director, earning two Oscars for his 1990 epic Dances with Wolves. He’s been part of major hits like Field of Dreams, The Bodyguard, and Bull Durham. Critics and audiences alike have praised his work, with films like Hidden Figures scoring 93% on Rotten Tomatoes.
But not everything he’s touched has turned to gold. Costner has had his share of failures, too. His 2002 movie Dragonfly sits at the bottom of his Rotten Tomatoes list with just 7%. Even The Postman, now considered a cult classic, was a disaster at the box office, grossing $17 million against an $80 million budget and scoring only 14% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The challenges continued with his 2024 film Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1. This Western, released in June, earned $38.2 million worldwide on a massive $100 million budget. Critics weren’t impressed either, giving it a 51% Tomatometer score.

Was Kevin Costner in love with Whitney Houston? (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Yes, Kevin Costner proved the same by saying, “She was my one true love.” And yeah, he wasn’t shy about it, even years after Whitney Houston’s passing. But this wasn’t your average Hollywood love story. It all started when Costner played matchmaker, not for romance, but for The Bodyguard.
Whitney had doubts. She was a chart-topping pop queen, stepping into acting. She was nervous, thinking she’d be picked apart by critics—like Madonna before her. “I’m afraid. I don’t want to go out there and fall,” she admitted. Costner wasn’t having it. He picked up the phone and said, “Listen, are you going to do this movie with me or not?” His pitch? “I promise you I will not let you fall. I will help you.” No pressure, right? He knew she...

Kevin Costner might be well known for his role as John Dutton in the Yellowstone universe. But years before that, he got on board The Bodyguard which established his everlasting friendship with legendary singer Whitney Houston. This movie released in 1992 was her acting debut project and turned out to be a huge success with her soundtrack I Will Always Love You becoming a global sensation.

However, given that she was a big name in the music industry, she had reservations before saying yes to the movie. Not only that, she also didn’t want to get the level of hate that pop icon Madonna got when she participated in A Certain Sacrifice released in 1985.

On Nov. 25, 1992, Warner Bros. unveiled the Kevin Costner-Whitney Houston drama The Bodyguard in theaters. The R-rated, 129-minute film went on to become a blockbuster, grossing more than $400 million globally. The Hollywood Reporter’s original review of the feature is below:
That joke about Al Gore and how you distinguish him from a roomful of Secret Service agents — “he’s the stiff one” — wouldn’t hold here.
Kevin Costner plays the uptightest of security dweebs who gets unloosened by the seductive charms of his superstar client (Whitney Houston). An old-fashioned opposites-attract love story, this Tig production should secure Warner Bros, a hefty boxoffice ransom as a Saturday night date special.
Costner has tightened the knot in his natural-athlete, mid-American persona: He’s Mr. Potatoheaded his hair and gruffed up his delivery for the role of Frank Farmer, former centurion for two presidents and now independent security agent.

Spoiler Alert: This post contains spoilers from the Season 5, Episode 11 episode of “Yellowstone,” “Three Fifty-Three,” which premiered Sunday, Nov. 24 on Paramount Network.
Once it became clear that Kevin Costner wouldn’t return for the second half of Season 5 of “Yellowstone,” fans wondered how series creator Taylor Sheridan would write off his character, John Dutton. The split seemed less than amicable, including Costner saying he was unable to get on the same page with the rest of production about shooting schedules and even mentioning that legal action could come as a result of his departure.
But it’s hard to imagine fans imagining John Dutton’s farewell would go down like it did. Instead of a fitting send-off for the patriarch of the central family, it seems like Sheridan is trying to throw mud on the main character’s in-show legacy, while also needling Costner in real life.

Mick Jackson's "The Bodyguard" is one of the lousiest blockbusters ever made. It's no secret why the film, which grossed a stunning $411 million globally ($924 million in 2024 dollars) on a $25 million budget, caught on with audiences: Kevin Costner playing the Steve McQueen-esque guardian of Whitney Houston, who belts out her biggest hit ever at the end of the movie ("I Will Always Love You"), was just a crazy zeitgeisty combination of superstars in 1992. Even though the B+ Cinemascore indicates it didn't hit the sweetest of spots with moviegoers, the hook and that song proved irresistible.
So what if the R-rated action-romance played like the chastest Adrian Lyne movie ever made, or the 17-year-old screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan was a by-the-numbers bore? Did it matter that Costner and Houston had absolutely zero chemistry, or that critics generally abhorred the film?...

If you grew up on such films as "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective," "The Nutty Professor," and "Liar Liar," you likely know the name Tom Shadyac. The writer/director made a name for himself with these now beloved family comedies. You might remember his first detour from such fare with the critically-panned but commercially successful "Patch Adams," but chances are you've never heard of his follow-up.
Shadyac's 2002 supernatural thriller "Dragonfly" was every bit as maudlin as "Patch Adams" but it also had the distinction of being a bona fide box office dud, making $52 million on a $60 million budget. Trying something different is often to be commended, but the guy who directed "Ace Ventura" helming a film about a widowed doctor whose dead wife contacts him through patients doesn't seem like the most well-advised career move. Still, if you've got Kevin Costner fronting your bizarre drama, you might be in with a chance of making something half-decent.

Women falling for their bodyguards seems to be the new hot trope these days, especially among readers. There’s just something about a stoic, unfazed man becoming head over heels for the woman he’s supposed to protect! However, even though this trope seems to be all the rage these days, Kevin Costner had already done it back in 1992.

Kevin Costner has had a long, fruitful career in Hollywood that spans more than four decades dating back to his early roles in films like "The Big Chill" and "Silverado." That career has included some wildly high highs, including his Best Picture winning Western epic "Dances With Wolves," which is still regarded as one of his best films. "Dances With Wolves" also started Costner's career as a director, kicking off his time behind the camera on a high note. Unfortunately, his follow-up -- which came in the form of 1997's "The Postman" -- didn't go nearly as well.

Of all the globally acclaimed masterpieces he has starred in to date, perhaps very few have garnered Kevin Costner as much attention as Yellowstone. Not only did the series launch him as the iconic head of the Dutton family, John Dutton, but the masterpiece helmed by Taylor Sheridan also cemented and elevated his position and status in the Western genre.

Of course, that was all in the past, for Costner seems to have moved past the ranch-y saga following his exit after season 5A. If anything, his Western criteria seem to be just what helped him land and make such an amazing saga alongside Sheridan in the first place.

Tomas Arana’s name might not be the first that comes to mind when thinking about great cinema. He’s not a “star” in the most commercial sense of the word.
To be sure, Arana has appeared in what we commonly refer to as blockbusters — Gladiator, The Bourne Supremacy or The Bodyguard with Whitney Houston — but it would be wrong to limit his career to those successes. Arana was Lazarus in Martin Scorsese’s The Last Temptation of Christ, the Detective Breuning in L.A. Confidential, Laginov in The Hunt for Red October with Sean Connery, Walter in Sergio Corbucci’s Neapolitan Mystery, Damon in Michele Soavi’s The Sect and so much more. A veteran of experimental theater companies like La Mamma, Tomas Arana has done it all, and with a particular passion for Italy.

Costner’s ambitious project didn’t just fail to hit the mark—it pretty much nose-dived straight into disaster territory. And now, it seems like one of his A-list peers is having a hard time trusting him with anything big again.

When it comes to the most cherished relationships in life, family ties often hit a home run, don’t they? And, let’s face it—family relationships are the secret sauce in many of the most meaningful film stories ever told. But if we’re talking about films that really knock it out of the park when it comes to capturing the father-son bond, Field of Dreams takes the cake.

Classic rock bands often had their biggest hits when they branched out into other genres. For example, Aerosmith’s only No. 1 song was a shift in sound and subject matter from their earlier music. During an interview, Steven Tyler revealed that he was shocked that his band had only one No. 1 song.
Aerosmith’s only No. 1 song was part of a dead 1990s trend
During a 2015 interview with PopMatters, Aerosmith bassist Tom Hamilton was asked if sex was the primary theme of Aerosmith’s music. “It is actually,” he said. “When we were young, we had these guitars that were like … lust weapons. You went out there as a way to impress women and get them to notice you. That’s still there now: you always want to be admired by the opposite sex. There’s a lot of symbolism in Aerosmith. The whole thing’s a big metaphor.”

Houston is one of the most iconic and influential singers in pop music history. Born August 9, 1963 into a family with deep gospel roots, she began strict vocal lessons from her Grammy-winning mother, Cissy Houston, at age 13. Cissy came from the popular gospel group The Drinkard Singers before forming the highly sought after crew of background vocalists called The Sweet Inspirations. Cissy’s voice can be heard on hundreds of songs for artists such as Elvis Presley, Dusty Springfield, Van Morrison and Luther Vandross. Most notably, Cissy provides the soaring soprano backing Aretha Franklin in the Queen of Soul’s classic hit, “Ain’t No Way.”

In 1985 Whitney Houston took the music world by storm with her record-setting self-titled debut album. The diamond-certified release included three Billboard Hot 100 chart-toppers: “Saving All My Love For You,” “How Will I Know” and “Greatest Love of All.” Two years later, with a sophomore disc simply titled “Whitney,” she became the first woman to debut at the top of the Billboard 200 albums chart. Four more number ones – “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)”, “Didn’t We Almost Have It All,” “So Emotional” and “Where Do Broken Hearts Go” made her the first artist (and only to this day) to have seven consecutive number one singles.
The legendary diva’s musical success continued through “I’m Your Baby Tonight” in 1990, with two more number one singles including the title track and “All the Man That I Need,” but it was her foray into film that shot Houston’s career into another stratosphere.

Some of our younger readers might not remember this, but in the early 1990s, Kevin Costner was objectively the biggest thing in Hollywood.
The impressive streak of Field of Dreams, Dances With Wolves, JFK, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, and The Bodyguard cemented Costner's place as one of the most bankable box office draws of his generation.
The fact that Costner wrote, directed, and starred in Wolves -- which went on to win several Oscars, including Best Picture -- had many industry scribes drawing comparisons to a young Orson Welles.
A Walking Cautionary Tale
But even the brightest stars can be eclipsed by a string of historic flops, and by the end of the decade, Costner's name was synonymous with "box office poison."
1995's Waterworld and 1997's The Postman -- both written, directed by, and starring Costner -- were such colossal (and colossally expensive) failures that they combined to make...

Here's a classic from Hollywood's "Nobody Knows Anything" files (a three-word bit of industry wisdom coined by "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" screenwriter William Goldman in his book "Adventures in the Screen Trade").
You didn't need to know much of anything about the film business in the fall of 1992 to predict the box office success of Mick Jackson's "The Bodyguard." Kevin Costner was at the height of his movie stardom coming off the previous year's "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" and "JFK," while his co-star Whitney Houston (making her big-screen acting debut) was one of the most popular recording artists on the planet. The film would have to be an all-time turkey to fall short of profitability.
Based on a 17-year-old screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan, "The Bodyguard" underwhelmed critics, but connected strongly enough with its target audience to pull in $122 million at the domestic box office (on a reasonable $25 million budget). The film,...
