It's hard to believe that it has now been three years since Supergirl came to an end. The Girl of Steel teamed up with her allies from the past and present (and even future) to take on the nefarious team of Lex Luthor and Nyxly in what was an epic two-part finale designed to close out not just the sixth season but the show's overarching story. It succeeded, bringing a close to the Arrowverse series in a heartfelt manner that had all of its fans feeling emotional.
The show's conclusion marked the beginning of the end of the DC TV shows on The CW, and it all led to this moment as the last of them, Supergirl spinoff Superman and Lois, just recently wrapped up. Though some Supergirl stars, particularly Tyler Hoechlin, Elizabeth "Bitsie" Tulloch, and Jenna Dewan, all reprised their roles, the Girl of Steel herself, Melissa Benoist, never...

Gregory Maguire's novel "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West" was first published in 1995, a time when teenage Gen-Xers were having a ball deconstructing pop media and riffing on the inherent absurdities of previous generations' entertainment. This was an era when Richard Linklater's "Slacker" joked about the Smurfs, and when Kevin Smith's "Clerks" amusingly overthought the details of the Death Star. In 1995, there was a feeling that all media was coming to an end, and it was easy to make a sport of tearing old stories to the ground.
Maguire, as such, wrote a tale about how the Wicked Witch of the West from L. Frank Baum's 1900 novel "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" -- as well as from Victor Fleming's 1939 film adaptation -- was actually a misunderstood sorceress who was forced into wickedness by a vapid schoolmate version of Glinda...

“Dogma 2” needs Matt and Ben to get made. Fortunately, Kevin Smith has leverage over them.
During an appearance at the Vulture Festival over the weekend (via Deadline) celebrating the 25th anniversary of Smith’s cult favorite fantasy comedy “Dogma,” the writer-director revealed that he’s working on a sequel to the film, which remains one of his most successful, critically and commercially.
“Some people will be like, ‘Don’t f—ing touch it. You’ll ruin it,’” Smith said at the event. “And I’m here to tell you: I will. I’m f—ing tickled. I found a way in.”
Smith said he is confident that Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, who starred as fallen angels Bartleby and Loki in the original film, will return for the sequel because they owe him for helping their breakthrough film “Good Will Hunting” get made and then forgetting to thank him when...

Kevin Smith is working on a sequel to Dogma 25 years after its original release, and he expects Ben Affleck and Matt Damon to make at least cameo appearances.
During his “Dogma Confessional” at Vulture Festival, Smith shared his excitement about the project, joking about potential backlash:
Some people will say, ‘Don’t mess with it—you’ll ruin it.’ And I probably will. But I’m thrilled because I’ve found a way to make it happen.”
Smith is confident that Affleck and Damon will return as fallen angels Bartleby and Loki. He humorously added that after helping them with Good Will Hunting in 1997, they owe him.
The panel marked Dogma’s 25th anniversary, reflecting on the original film’s story about two angels trying to find a loophole to get back into heaven. The 1999 movie starred Linda Fiorentino, Salma Hayek, Alan Rickman, Chris Rock, Jason Lee, and Alanis Morissette,...

After 25 years, Kevin Smith is reconnecting with the man upstairs for the unholiest of sequels.

Nerdly’s interviewer extraordinaire fills a bucket list dream by sitting down and chatting with one of his all-time favourite directors Kevin Smith about his new flick The 4:30 Movie – a love letter to the glory days of the cinema.
Kevin Smith is an American director, producer, writer, and actor. He came to prominence with the low-budget comedy buddy film Clerks (1994), which he wrote, directed, co-produced, and acted in as the character Silent Bob of stoner duo Jay and Silent Bob, characters who also appeared in Smith’s later films Mallrats (1995), Chasing Amy (1997), Dogma (1999), Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001), Clerks II (2006), Jay and Silent Bob Reboot (2019), and Clerks III (2022) which are set primarily in his home state of New Jersey. While not strictly sequential, the films have crossover plot elements, character references, and a shared canon known as the “View Askewniverse”, named after Smith’s production company View Askew Productions,...

In the spring of 1997, Chasing Amy hit theaters, serving as a comeback for writer-director Kevin Smith. Earlier in the decade, the New Jersey filmmaker had launched onto the scene with Clerks, a low-budget comedy about some foul-mouthed buddies who worked at a convenience store, earning rave reviews and announcing Smith as a promising new indie talent. But he tarnished that reputation with his follow-up, Mallrats, which was a commercial bomb and critically derided. It’s no exaggeration to say that Smith’s career was hanging in the balance when he released Chasing Amy, a bittersweet love story about a comic-book artist, Holden (Ben Affleck), who falls in love with a fellow artist, Alyssa (Joey Lauren Adams). They seem to click, but there’s a problem: She’s gay, thinking of him only as a friend. But the more time they spend together, the more she starts to develop romantic feelings for him.

27 years after its initial release, Kevin Smith’s “Chasing Amy” remains a Rorschach test for questions of representation, authorship, and identity in film.
The 1997 film, which served as a comeback for Smith after his studio flop “Mallrats” threatened to derail the indie wunderkind status that he built with “Clerks,” is a distinct product of its time that offers a Gordian knot of messy questions about sexuality filtered through Smith’s distinctly male gaze. Ben Affleck stars as Holden McNeil, a New Jersey comic book writer who falls in love with Alyssa (Joey Lauren Adams in a career-defining performance), a pansexual woman who primarily identifies with the lesbian community. But their whirlwind romance can’t overcome his insecurities over her promiscuous past and the blatant homophobia of his writing partner Banky (Jason Lee), who lashes out at the relationship as a means of dealing with his own repressed homosexuality.

Real-life comic book magnate Stan Lee, much like fictional newspaper magnate Charles Foster Kane, is a jigsaw puzzle who was many things to many different people, depending on the piece of the puzzle they had. For non-comic book reading folks, he was that funny old guy who kept popping up in Marvel movies and had, apparently, even written a few comics himself. For comic aficionados, on the other hand, he was an undeniably important figure in the history of the medium, but also one who had excelled at mythologizing his personal contributions to Marvel Comics at the expense of others.
Lee was certainly an expert in the art of building an individual brand, which, in that respect, makes Kevin Smith his heir apparent. In point of fact, the filmmaker, actor, comic book writer, podcaster, and surprise transmasculine style icon is a lot like Lee in that he's arguably as famous...

Donald Trump once again lied about the Biden administration’s response to Hurricane Helene over the weekend, but he was once again fact-checked for it — by Fox News host Laura Ingraham. And that surprised Seth Meyers a bit on Tuesday night.
While doing an interview on “The Ingraham Angle” on Saturday, Trump tried to accuse Vice President Harris of going to campaign fundraisers instead of being on the ground in North Carolina to help with relief efforts.
Ingraham immediately corrected him though, telling him that Harris was in North Carolina that very day, for several hours.
“Imagine being such a liar that you get fact-checked by Laura Ingraham. That’s like getting fashion advice from Kevin Smith,” Meyers joked, pulling up a photo of the “Clerks” star in one of his signature oversized jackets.
“And I love you, dude. You know I love you,” Meyers continued. “You look like an 8-year-old with a court date.

Kevin Smith's Most Controversial Movie Is Free Of Weinstein Control – And The Director Has Big Plans
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.
Kevin Smith has been at an interesting point in his career post-heart attack. He's been revisiting the past with films like "Jay and Silent Bob Reboot" and "Clerks III" while also pressing forward into originals once again with his most recent film, "The 4:30 Movie," which has been met with decent reviews thus far. Now though, it seems Smith gets to reclaim a bright (yet controversial) part of his past in the form of 1999's "Dogma." The rights to the film have been wrangled away from Harvey Weinstein, with Smith recently revealing that he and the new owner have big plans beginning next year.
In a recent interview with That Hashtag Show, Smith was promoting "The 4:30 Movie," which is available now on VOD. However, the filmmaker was asked about the status of "Dogma," as it has been largely unavailable for years,...

How does Kevin Smith feel about receiving his best reviews in years for “The 4:30 Movie,” a film that he shot at his childhood movie theater after purchasing it in 2021?
“The lesson is never make a movie until you have the location first,” Smith said with a laugh during a recent conversation with IndieWire. “Because, in the case of ‘Clerks,’ there was a location and then the story grew from that. And with ‘The 4:30 Movie,’ it’s like I had a location and the story grew from that… I can’t fuck up those movies, I guess is what it comes down to.”
Smith grew up attending movies at the Atlantic Twin Cinemas in Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey, which was later rebranded as the Atlantic Movie House. And like many independent theaters in America, the venue was already struggling before the Covid-19 pandemic hit. But 2020 proved to be a...

In a case of confusion in a galaxy far, far away, Kevin Smith recently revealed that he didn’t actually know which character he voiced in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and he was telling everyone the wrong part! During a career retrospective with Entertainment Weekly, the writer-director of cult classics like Clerks and Mallrats shared this hilarious story of mistaken identity.
It all started when J.J. Abrams, the director of The Force Awakens, offered Smith the chance to voice a stormtrooper. “J.J. was kind enough to let me do a voice for a stormtrooper,” Smith recalled. “And he had a bunch of lines written, so he was like, 'I don’t know which one you’re gonna be. Just say all 10 of these.’” Sounds simple enough, right? Except Smith had no idea which stormtrooper he’d actually end up playing when he finally saw the movie.

When Kevin Smith made "Clerks" in 1994, he was only 23 and ignorant of the ways of filmmaking. Smith was inspired to make a movie by Richard Linklater's "Slacker," figuring he could write a fun screenplay based on the way he and his friend conversed. Made for only $27,575, "Clerks" was about witty but directionless twentysomethings as they struggled through their romantic angst while trapped at their dead-end jobs. "Clerks" struck a nerve with Gen-Xers, introducing a certain type of pop culture chatter that hadn't really been heard in movies before. It was a huge hit.
Smith returned in 1995 with "Mallrats," another single-day movie about twentysomethings wrestling with their romances and emotional immaturity. His 1997 film "Chasing Amy" was an unconventional romance about a straight man who falls in love with a lesbian, and how the lesbian may be developing feelings for him in exchange. Ultimately, however, the straight man's sexual insecurity causes their relationship to implode.

If you’re a fan of director Kevin Smith, you’ve probably seen movies like Clerks, Mallrats and Dogma, but one of his films has hardly been viewed by anyone at all.
In 2022, Smith released KillRoy Was Here, a low-budget horror anthology, loosely based on the World War II graffiti meme, and made with a crew of Florida film students. But the movie didn’t come to theaters, or streaming services, or even Betamax, it was issued exclusively as 5,555 NFTs on the Legendao platform, meaning the film was unavailable to watch unless you had the special “crypto key.”
Two years later, it still hasn’t been made available anywhere else.

Even Smith fans seemed pretty miffed at this arrangement, which essentially prevented them from ever watching the movie without shelling out big bucks to some crypto company.
But going the Nft route wasn’t always the plan for KillRoy Was Here.

In another world, The 4:30 Movie might have been named ‘Movierats’. Kevin Smith has long told tales of New Jersey kids simply hanging out, be it at the local shop (Clerks), the local fast-food restaurant (Clerks II), or the local mall (Mallrats). Here, he takes that template and applies it to the local multiplex — what better love-letter to cinema than a film set almost entirely at the cinema? And more specifically, the cinema of Smith’s own youth, which he now owns and operates as Smodcastle Cinemas in Atlantic Highlands, NJ? Disappointingly, for all the promise in the premise, it rarely projects in quite the way you’d hope.
In typical Smith style, this is very much a story from the heart, remixing personal experience in cinematic form — lead character Brian David (a charming and engaging Austin Zajur) is a clear Kevin Smith stand-in, a deeply nerdy kid with a passion for cinema,...

As Hollywood attempts to keep up with the ever-changing face of streaming, Kevin Smith has gotten into the movie theater business.
The director’s latest film is The 4:30 Movie, which serves as a love letter to small-town cinemas. It came at a time when he was feeling “existential” about being “one more goofy-ass tile to this never-ending wall” of film and television content on streaming platforms.

“I meet people who tell you wonderful things about movies you’ve made years ago that other people lambast, and they’re like: ‘That’s my favorite movie.

Thirty years ago, Kevin Smith burst into the world of independent filmmaking in a blaze of glorious serendipity that nobody could replicate if they tried. Self-financed for less than $30,000 and shot entirely in the convenience store where he worked, the original “Clerks” was an electrifying mix of slacker wit and utter absurdism at a time when putting pop culture-obsessed male mediocrity on the big screen felt like a genuinely novel concept. Even after double digit viewings, the film still feels like a pitch-perfect punk rock farce that can make even the most discerning cinephile laugh out loud more than it has any right to.
None of Smith’s subsequent work caught that kind of lightning in a bottle, but quite a few of his early films were close enough to the original high to be watchable. “Mallrats” is a passable ’90s comedy, “Chasing Amy” is a clever character study anchored...

As someone who grew up loving movies in the 1980s, I can’t help but wonder if we’ll ever shut up about movies from the 1980s. Yeah, a lot of those movies were good. A lot of them also stank out loud. You could make both those statements about any decade for the last 120 years. When, oh when will filmmakers finally move on and, just for a change of pace, make some cinematic love letters to the summer “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen” and “From Justin to Kelly” came out?
Not today, that’s for sure. “The 4:30 Movie” is a nostalgic throwback to the sleepy summer of 1986, when teenagers watched wrestling religiously, made ironic predictions about the Mets never winning the World Series, and spent all day at the movies jumping from theater to theater. Plot: Writer-director Kevin Smith presents his most personal film to date with this coming-of-age story — set in the summer of 1986 — that follows three sixteen-year-old friends who spend their Saturdays sneaking into movies at the local cineplex. When one of the guys invites the girl of his dreams to see an R-rated film, all hilarity breaks loose, as a self-important theater manager and teen rivalries interfere with his best-laid plans.
Review: I have been a Kevin Smith fan since I saw Clerks in the mid-90s. Smith had a solid run over the early course of his career, but the 2010s were less kind from a critical standpoint. The Clerks director continues his nostalgic mood in endearing study of a geeky adolescent with high romantic ambitions

As a filmmaker, knowing the right balance to tell the perfect cinematic story can be challenging. While on set, you film everything you think you’ll need to create a great film, but when you hit the editing bay, you realize that some stuff may not work. Scenes that add different aspects may end up on the cutting room floor. Not all of them actually take away from the film, but they add some more layers to it that add a lot. It could be a case of budget or just for time, but some things need to be chopped. What are some deleted scenes that changed the movie?

What happens when Jay and Silent Bob crash a car into your grandparents’ kitchen while you’re spending your summer vacation at their house? Leia Forman (Callie Haverda) is about to find out when That ’90s Show returns for Part 3, with 10 new episodes directed by her TV mom, That ’70s Show star (and That ’90s Show guest star) Laura Prepon.
Well, sort of. To start, while Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes are dressed as their famous characters from Clerks, they’re not playing them on the 1996-set series. That would probably cause a tear in the time-space continuum, because Callie rents Clerks in Season 1. Instead, Smith plays Sonny, the son of Tommy Chong’s Leo, and Mewes plays his friend Bunch.
Want to know more about what happens in Part 3 of That ’90s Show? Read on for more information about this season’s guest stars plus refreshers on what happened...

Hollywood is assembling a force to be reckoned with as Rosario Dawson joins Alexandra Shipp and Milla Jovovich for the upcoming action thriller Midnight. Dawson joins the project as a producer and actor, with first-time filmmaker Joshua Otis Miller directing for Yale Productions. The plan is to shop the project for potential buyers at the Toronto Film Festival in September.
According to Deadline, Midnight revolves around a young, blind woman (Shipp) who is hunted by a collective of international criminals led by Jovovich’s character. The deadly group wants a package they believe was given to Shipp’s character by her federal agent sister (Dawson). The group assumes stealing from the visually impaired will be easy, but that assumption is about to go terribly wrong. Lamont Magee and Jeff Byrd wrote the script.

As movie fans, it's fun to make fun of studio executives for giving terrible notes to filmmakers. It's tempting to think of Hollywood as a town full of creatives who are constantly being held down by business-minded execs who wouldn't know great art if it smacked them in the face. There's an underdog quality to that mentality, an "us vs. them" dividing line where we, as an audience, can side with who we perceive to be the oppressed parties -- the storytellers who are sometimes able to sneak incredible moments past the morons upstairs and deliver their uncut vision to the screen.
The reality, however, is probably much more nuanced than that. It's rare that we hear about great studio notes that saved filmmakers from their worst instincts, but they likely happen more often than we know. As easy as it is to assume all executives are idiots, they can't...

Marvel Studios never ventured into R-rated territory before the naughty Merc with a Mouth came slicing through the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The comic book movie house kept things PG-13, though they did manage to let their first f-bomb ever into "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3." Of course, all of that relatively clean language that Captain America reluctantly defended in "Avengers: Age of Ultron" gets tossed right out the window with "Deadpool & Wolverine," which drops a plethora of profanity and other vicious vernacular.
Yes, "Deadpool & Wolverine" doesn't shy away from dropping many f-bombs. Apparently the folks at Discussing Film kept a tally, and the magic swear word is unleashed 118 times, bringing the total count of f-bombs in the MCU to 119. That's not a bad number at all, and it's enough to surpass the word's usage in "Deadpool 2," probably because Wolverine is throwing it around quite a bit in this movie too.

Kevin Smith’s Semi-Autobiographical ‘The 4:30 Movie’ Centers on ’80s Teen Cinephiles — Watch Trailer
Kevin Smith has often blurred the lines between documentary and fiction. With semi-autobiographical film “The 4:30 Movie”, the writer/director is tapping into his New Jersey teen years.
Smith wrote and directed the feature that is billed as his “most personal film to date.” The coming-of-age story stars “Clerks 3” actor Austin Zajur as Brian David, a teen cinephile (and Smith surrogate) who regularly sneaks into movie theaters.
The official synopsis for “The 4:30 Movie” reads: “Three sixteen-year-old friends who spend their Saturdays sneaking into movies at the local cineplex. When one of the guys invites the girl of his dreams to see an R-rated film, all hilarity breaks loose, as a self-important theater manager (Ken Jeong) and teen rivalries interfere with his best-laid plans.”
The film takes place in the summer of 1986, and includes cameos from former Smith collaborators Justin Long, Rosario Dawson, Jason Biggs, Jason Mewes, Jason Lee (all the Jasons), and more.

The movie business is a vast, complicated beast. Unless you're on the inside at a Hollywood studio, it can be difficult to wrap one's head around. Even then, it can still be perplexing as it's an ever-evolving maze. The key is that it is ultimately a business based on utilizing the art of filmmaking to try and turn a profit. The biggest part of the equation, now and pretty much always, is the box office.
Though certainly not the only measure of a movie's success, oftentimes, the number of tickets sold versus what it cost to make is the element that determines whether we classify a movie as a hit or not. It's relatively basic math, even though the math is often anything but simple. Just look at a movie like "Bohemian Rhapsody," which the studio claimed lost $51 million despite pulling in more than $900 million at the global box office...

Shannen Doherty, the actress whose film and television work resulted in some of the most iconic TV characters of the 1990s, has died at the age of 53 after a long battle with cancer.
“It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of actress Shannen Doherty. On Saturday, July 13, she lost her battle with cancer after many years of fighting the disease,” Doherty’s publicist said in a statement to People. “The devoted daughter, sister, aunt and friend was surrounded by her loved ones as well as her dog, Bowie. The family asks for their privacy at this time so they can grieve in peace.”
Born in Memphis in 1971, Doherty first rose to prominence as a child actress playing Jenny Wilder in 18 episodes of “Little House on the Prairie.” She continued to build a resume of guest appearances throughout the 1980s before rising to mainstream prominence with her...

It’s been 30 whole years since the release of Clerks, and Kevin Smith’s breakout slacker duo Jay and Silent Bob are still popping up in movies, TV shows and the occasional Degrassi-themed rap video.
At the end of last year, Smith revealed that he’s currently writing yet another Jay and Silent Bob movie, a follow-up to 2019’s Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, which starred Smith, Jason Mewes and every working actor in Smith’s phone contacts.
While not much is known about the movie at this point, Smith recently took to Instagram to share a photo of one of the upcoming sequel’s props — an evil book, bound in human flesh, that resembles Silent Bob’s tortured face.
Obviously the prop is a facsimile of the Necronomicon from the Evil Dead series, just with a beard and a backwards baseball cap. Smith joked that it is “The...

While we wait to hear a specific release date for Kevin Smith’s latest film The 4:30 Movie, which Saban Films will be sending out into the world sometime this fall, Smith is already gearing up to go into production on his next project, a third Jay and Silent Bob movie (following Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and Jay and Silent Bob Reboot). While Reboot was very similar to Strike Back, Smith has said he’s working to keep this new sequel unpredictable… and, judging by the image he has posted of a prop that has been made for the film, he is succeeding. I never would have predicted that Jay and Silent Bob 3 (we’ll just call it that for now) would feature a volume of the Necromonicon called the NecroBobicon, but a Silent Bob-inspired variation on the Book of the Dead from Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead...

Actor John Boyega starred in three of the extant 16 "Star Wars" movies*, playing the rogue-Stormtrooper-turned-good guy Finn in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" (2015), "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" (2017), and "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker" (2019). Boyega liked playing Finn, but has gone on record (notably in a 2020 GQ interview) about his disappointment with how the series treated his character; Finn was set up to be a leading man, and was sidelined for what appeared to be racism-based reasons. Boyega was also off-put by Disney's habit of micromanaging "Star Wars," feeling that every one of the franchise's actors ran the risk of being roped into "Star Wars" projects exclusively. "You ain't going to Disney+ me," he once laughingly said to Variety.
There hasn't been a "Star Wars" movie since 2019, as Disney+ kind of killed their Goose that Laid the Golden Eggs. The theatrical market was oversaturated, audiences didn't respond terribly well...

The 4:30 Movie is the sixteenth feature film from director Kevin Smith – and while he was making the movie, he thought he was making something that would get a PG-13 rating from the Motion Picture Association ratings board. But the MPA saw it differently. When they had the chance to watch the movie earlier this year, they felt the sexual references in the dialogue were enough for the movie to earn an R rating for sexual content. Smith appealed the rating (and subscribers to That Kevin Smith Club got some interesting insight into the appeals process), but the ratings board decided to stick with the R. They confirmed today that The 4:30 Movie will remain an R rated film.
Smith has a history of being able to get his films re-rated on appeal. Clerks and Zack and Miri Make a Porno were both given Nc-17 ratings, but were re-rated R on appeal.

Disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein’s 2020 rape conviction has been overturned by New York’s top appeals court.
After an appeal process, the court found there were “egregious errors” committed in the original trial, according to the Associated Press, including the court’s allowance of testimony from three women speaking to “uncharged, alleged prior sexual acts” that were unrelated to the rape charge. The argument from Weinstein’s side is that the Miramax founder could not take the stand in his defense on the actual charges without also being cross-examined on the uncharged accusations.
The New York Court of Appeals vote was a close one: Weinstein’s conviction was overturned 4-3.
“We conclude that the trial court erroneously admitted testimony of uncharged, alleged prior sexual acts against persons other than the complainants of the underlying crimes,” the majority decision said. “The remedy for these egregious errors is a new trial.

Making a film in under 25 days is a monumental feat for a filmmaker. However, with clever budgeting, creativity, and resourcefulness from a talented cast and crew, films can be made in a few days and even in a few hours.
Victoria (2015) and Russian Ark (2002) were filmed in a single continuous shot, pushing the boundaries of a well-thought-out planned production.
Many of these come from first-time independent filmmakers, including The Blair Witch Project (1998); Paranormal Activity ( 2007), Clerks (1994); Mind, Body & Soul (2024); El Mariachi (1992); Get Out (2017); Napoleon Dynamite (2004) and Fruitvale Station (2013). These movies stand as testaments to the power of resourceful directing, proving that films can be made quickly and effectively on any budget.
Take a look back at movies that were made in under 23 days that were released at the box office.

For 40 years, the Sundance Film Festival has been the United States' preeminent market and showcase for independent film. Kevin Smith could have bought the Quick Stop market he made famous in his first film, “Clerks.” But when the opportunity arose, the indie director instead put his hard-earned cash into his childhood movie theater in Atlantic Highlands, N.J., reopening it in 2022 as SModcastle Cinemas.
Now he’s fighting to keep the 103-year-old non-profit theater going, even if “exhibition is in the toilet,” as he likes to say. In other words, local audiences sometimes prefer to watch big hits like “Avatar” in modern multiplexes, and keeping a repertory theater vibrant without the help of a pricey beer and wine license is not for the faint of heart, he has found.

Shaun and his best mate Ed are in trouble. They’ve discovered two zombies in their garden, and the lumbering flesh-eaters show no signs of stopping. However, Shaun and Ed have found one way of slowing the approach: throwing records.
And so, as the two zombies grow closer, Ed and Shaun rustle through the latter’s collection. “Sign o’ the Times … Purple Rain,” Ed suggests as projectiles, only to have Shaun tell him no. That is until Ed reaches a low point in Prince’s discography, the Batman soundtrack. “Throw it,” Shaun commands, striking a blow against the living dead.
The above scene is just one instance of the humor and horror that director Edgar Wright and his co-writer Simon Pegg bring to the RomZomCom Shaun of the Dead, released twenty years ago. Shaun (Pegg) and Ed (Nick Frost) spend a lot of time discussing their pop-cultural interests, even in the most dire situations.

Check it out down below. Our own Kurt caught Dad & Step-Dad when it played at Calgary Underground last spring. This is the opening paragraph of his review, which you can find here. Not since wandering into Kevin Smith’s Clerks in an Oshawa multiplex in 1994 have I immediately glommed on to a micro-budget comedy as something that can be watched over and over again. Tynan DeLong’s Dad & Step-Dad is a small, but significant, revelation on the power of improv and DIY filmmaking. How performance and clever editing can run with a...
