It’s now been ten years since the most recent installment in the RoboCop franchise, that film of course being the 2014 remake, but the property certainly hasn’t gone anywhere in the years since. For starters, video game RoboCop: Rogue City released last year, and the comprehensive documentary series RoboDoc was released onto Screambox last year as well.
Deadline now reports today that Amazon MGM Studios is moving forward with their planned RoboCop television series, with horror master James Wan on board to executive produce.
Wan will produce through his label Atomic Monster.
Peter Ocko (Lodge 49) has also been brought on board as the writer, executive producer and showrunner on the project, which we originally heard rumblings about back in 2023.
Deadline details, “The series will follow the premise of the films, focusing on a giant tech conglomerate which collaborates with the local police department to introduce a technologically advanced enforcer...

Being a movie star is both a blessing and a curse. The blessings are fairly obvious, but, like all things that are too good to be true, they bring with them the seeds for the curse that follows, which is that movie stardom can set actors up for that much greater a fall should they start to slip off their pedestal. Some instances of actors taking a hard fall are deserved when it's to do with their offscreen behavior, yet in instances where it's mostly to do with the projects they're involved with being subpar, it's hard not to feel sorry for them.
Take Burt Reynolds, for instance. By the end of the 1970s he was among the most well-known and highest-paid actors working, and as the 1980s rolled on he continued to work with other name stars and solid filmmakers like Dolly Parton, Don Siegel, Blake Edwards, his buddy Hal Needham,...

What if there was no tomorrow? That's an existential question posed not only by the 2014 time loop film "Edge of Tomorrow," but also by its sequel's complicated status following the original's successful release. Ever since 2015, director Doug Liman and stars Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt have spoken at various times about a sequel movie getting off the ground. At one point, Liman had said that the sequel would be entitled "Live Die Repeat and Repeat" (referencing the movie's ersatz title/subtitle) and that the film's co-writer Christopher McQuarrie would also return. He even claimed that the concept was so good that "it's gonna revolutionize how people make sequels."
Alas, a myriad of obstacles have gotten in the way in the intervening years between that statement and now, with Blunt saying in August 2023 that she's still interested in making a sequel, but doesn't know when or how it could happen. Given the project's stalled status,...

It’s now been nearly ten years since the most recent installment in the RoboCop franchise, that film of course being the 2014 remake, but the property certainly hasn’t gone anywhere. For starters, new video game RoboCop: Rogue City is coming later this year, and the comprehensive documentary RoboDoc is headed to Screambox this year as well.

Outrageous, ultra-violent, and sleazy as hell, Officer Downe is the kind of movie made for midnight screenings and intended for audiences in the right mindset to see some deranged and psychotic nonsense.
What if you could resurrect RoboCop as many times as you wanted? That’s the simplified premise of this movie, which follows an L.A. super cop (Sons of Anarchy’s Kim Coates) who’s killed in the line of duty and brought back to life to continue his never-ending rampage against crime. Based on a comic and directed by Slipknot’s Shawn “Clown” Crahan, everything about Officer Downe is aggressive, in your face, and over the top. It’s all sex, drugs, rock ’n roll, and exploding heads, relentlessly blowing up traditional expectations about narrative structure and gleefully charging over the line of good taste.
The film opens with Downe going down on a busty blonde, and...

Celebrating its world premiere this weekend at the 2016 Los Angeles Film Festival is the graphic novel adaptation Officer Downe, which was written by Joe Casey (who also wrote the source material) and directed by M. Shawn Crahan, (also known to fans worldwide as “Clown” from Slipknot). The film stars Kim Coates as the titular character: a badass cop unable to die and Los Angeles’ last form of protection from a corrupt future world.
Produced by Mark Neveldine and Skip Williamson, two of the maniacs behind the Crank series, Officer Downe looks to be a balls-to-the-wall actioner that takes no prisoners (pun absolutely intended).
Daily Dead caught up with Coates prior to the film’s premiere to hear more about his experiences taking on the lead role for Officer Downe, collaborating with Crahan on the film, why the world needs more badass movies, and the virtues of playing an immortal character.

Roddy Piper puts on the damn glasses in They Live
He was here to kick ass and chew bubblegum, but now, after suffering a heart attack, popular wrestler and They Live star "Rowdy" Roddy Piper has died at the age of 61. According to his agent, he survived the initial attack, which happened at his home in Hollywood, but subsequently passed away in his sleep.
Most famous as a wrestler, piper enjoyed a 30 year professional career and continued to make occasional appearances in the ring right up to this year. He made television appearances in Walker, Texas Ranger, Robocop: The Series and the Highlander series, and appeared in films including The Mystical Adventures Of Billy Owens and Pro Wrestlers Vs Zombies, but is best known for his appearance as the beleaguered day labourer turned hero of John Carpenter cult classic They Live, which won him legions of new fans. The 1992 Full Moon flick Doctor Mordrid starring Jeffrey Combs was originally intended to be a Doctor Strange movie. Unfortunately, the rights reverted back to Marvel before Charles Band could get the film made.
With an actual Doctor Strange movie in the works, it seems fitting Band would give his pseudo-take on the character the Blu-ray treatment.
Re-Animator’s Jeffrey Combs dons his finest Doctor Strange lounge-wear to play enigmatic interdimensional sorcerer/New York landlord Dr. Anton Mordrid, sworn to protect our world by guarding the gates of the fourth dimension from his mortal enemy, the diabolical warlock Kabul (Brian Thompson, "The X-Files"), while also finding the time to for a little romance with a pretty police research consultant tenant (Yvette Nipar, “Robocop: The Series”).

The arrival of Kick-Ass 2 is a reminder of how comic book artists and creators have become movie industry royalty, James writes...
I like to think that the following happened on a daily basis during the filming of Kick-Ass 2 - all cast and crew members signalled their arrival on set by announcing, "I've come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass, and I'm all out of bubblegum."
If no one actually did take the opportunity to make a tenuous title-based association and quote Roddy Piper's best line in They Live, it's a damn shame. If Kick-Ass 3 happens, someone (everyone) involved can start this motivational ritual/repeat film reference in-joke when shooting begins on that sequel. In advance, you're welcome.

Released during the high point in Full Moon’s relationship with Paramount Pictures, Seedpeople was heavily advertised on its original UK release back in 1992, with ads appearing in many of the horror magazines of the period – including full page ads on the back and inside cover of The Dark Side (which ran for months on end I recall). The film itself wasn’t as successful as the other notable franchises in the Full Moon stable, with many reviews at the time noting that the film was a rip-off of Invasion of the Body Snatchers and essentially that’s what the movie is: a tongue-in-cheek alien invasion flick that echoes the feel of low-budget sci-fi flicks of the 1950s.

As the film award circus continues, Darren Aronofsky is beginning to develop The Wolverine, a Japan-set story based on the Marvel Comics X-Men character. But what we didn't know is, this isn't the only comic book movie Aronofsky is currently developing. In a recent interview, Darren revealed that he is "doing a comic book of a script that’s really hard to make and we’re going to do a comic version first and see what happens." It seems like Darren is trying to use the world of graphic novels as a backdoor into getting the movie made. And this wouldn't be the first time that Aronofsky has turned to the world of comics. His initial version of The Fountain was released in graphic novel form by Vertigo Comics in 2005 after Brad Pitt left the project high and dry. Which project could this possibly be for? We try to figure it out,...

The Last Exorcism (15)
(Daniel Stamm, 2010, Us) Patrick Fabian, Ashley Bell. 87 mins
There's an epic, gothic Dennis Wheatley-style horror struggling to get out of this curiously lightweight mockumentary, in which a jaded Louisiana evangelical priest (Fabian) takes on a local case of possession to prove that demons only exist in the mind. Stamm orchestrates some good old-fashioned in-camera shocks, but the handheld format is limiting, and what ought to be a truly horrific climax ends in a tired Blair Witch fizzle rather than a bang.
Certified Copy (12A)
(Abbas Kiarostami, 2010, Fr/It/UK) Juliette Binoche, William Shimell, 107 mins
Slightly wooden but deceptively memorable meta romance, in which a woman (Binoche) meets a man (Shimell) who may or may not be her husband.
Dinner For Schmucks
(12A) (Jay Roach, 2010, Us) Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, Zach Galifianakis. 114 mins
Rudd is an aspiring exec who takes Carell to his boss's who-can-bring-the-biggest-nerd dinner party.

As far as we know, Darren Aronofsky's next film is going to be the ballet thriller Black Swan starring Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis, but this week he has added another project to his upcoming slate. It's a heist film based on the odd story of Ufc star "Lightning" Lee Murray. In 2006, Murray was arrested for his alleged involvement in a Securitas depot robbery [1] in England that is known as the biggest heist in British crime history. The project is being produced by Xyz Films and Time Inc. Studios, who set up a partnership last year to adapt various non-fiction articles from Time publications into feature films. This particular story comes from a Sports Illustrated article written by Jon Wertheim called "Breaking the Bank", and a Howard Sounes book called Heist: The Inside Story of the World's Biggest Robbery. Kerry Williamson (Fork in the Road) will write the script.

Darren Aronofsky, the talented director behind Requiem For a Dream, The Fountain, and The Wrestler, may be looking toward the real life story of the Securitas Depot robbery in Tonbridge, a massive heist thought to be the brainchild of former Ufc star “Lightning” Lee Murray.
The details of the heist, which occurred in February of 2006, are being adapted into a screenplay by writer Kerry Williamson, who’s currently adapting Fork in the Road for Alexander Payne.
Allegedly, Williamson will be working from two original sources: A Sports Illustrated article entitled “Breaking the Bank” and Howard Sounes’ book Heist: The Inside Story of the World’s Biggest Robbery. /Film has the details on what the book contains:
On Wednesday, 22 February 2006, GBP53 million in bank notes was stolen from a cash warehouse belonging to the Securitas company in Tonbridge, Kent — a sum of money so vast that if the notes were stacked...

Darren Aronofsky has signed on to direct and produce an indie heist thriller based on the daring $85 million robbery at the Securitas Depot in Tonbridge, England, in February 2006, report the trades. Kerry Williamson is adapting the script from an underlying rights package that includes Jon Wertheim's Sports Illustrated magazine article "Breaking the Bank" and Howard Sounes' nonfiction book "Heist: The Inside Story of the World's Biggest Robbery." Williamson recently adapted Fork in the Road for Alexander Payne and Fox Searchlight and The Devil's Banker for Paramount. Xyz Films and Time Inc. Studios are partnered with Protozoa Pictures on the project. Time and Xyz established a partnership a year ago to develop and produce movies based on articles from Time Inc.'s publications and identified its first project after optioning "Breaking the Bank," covering the alleged criminal exploits of Ultimate Fighting Championship competitor "Lightning" Lee Murray. Matt Garret has a serious problem. Demons have taken hold of his life and before he can get any better, he’s going to take his whole family down with him!
The Intervention is an ambitious low-budget horror film from first-time director/producer/screenwriter Shannon Hile, who sent along the poster and the exclusive pics seen at the bottom of this page. An actress with credits including The X Files and Monk, she was inspired to do the film in a unique way. “I had been involved in a family member’s intervention, and it was a completely horrific experience,” she tells Fango. “Just awful; I could not imagine what was going on in that person’s head. I felt it would be perfect for a horror film, exploring demons—an addict’s inner demons.”
Hile collaborated on the screenplay with her actor husband Richard Eden, TV’s RoboCop. “We...

Mickey Rourke and Darren Aronofsky on set of The Wrestler
Photo: Fox Searchlight I interviewed Darren Aronofsky for The Fountain back in November 2006 and while he was actually here in Seattle I was not able to meet him so I had to do it over the phone, which was frustrating considering I found The Fountain to be one of the most fascinating films as evidenced by my commentary just over a year ago when Darren had to release his own commentary for the film independently because Warner Bros. didn't include it on the DVD release. So, that's a roundabout way of saying, I didn't get a chance to meet him face-to-face. Well, that has all changed. In Seattle to promote his extremely impressive film The Wrestler Darren and I had a 15 minute sit down and I can't tell you how flattering it was to hear him recognize the site and...
