Meg Ryan and Dennis Quaid were married at the time the movie was made. They tied the knot in 1991, but divorced in 2001.
Producer Mark Rosenberg died at the age of forty-four of a heart attack on the set in Stanton, Texas. The film is dedicated to him.
Writer and director Steve Kloves once said of this film in an interview: "Either you succumb to evil, or you conquer it, but you have to deal with it."
This is the third and final (to date, August 2018) film collaboration of Meg Ryan and Dennis Quaid. The first two being D.O.A. (1988) and Innerspace (1987).
Dennis Quaid would ask writer/director Steve Kloves, "Can I smile today, Steve?" every day during filming. Kloves' answer from the start to finish on the production was always the same: "No, you cannot."
