Jim Reeve, the British film and TV financier, died unexpectedly earlier this week. He was 64.

The announcement about the founder and Chairman of Great Point Media was made in a statement on the company’s website.

“It is with profound sadness that Great Point must confront the sudden and unexpected loss of our founder, mentor and friend, Jim Reeve, who passed away on Tuesday February 27th, 2024.

“Jim had a storied career in the entertainment business spanning 40 years, and his passing will be mourned by a great many. Our thoughts are with Jim’s family most of all during this incredibly difficult time.”

Reeve was an industry veteran who founded the London-based Great Point in 2013 alongside Robert Halmi Jr. Before that, he was a senior investment executive at Ingenious Group.

Those who have a weakness for British spy movies will find plenty to like in "The Whistle Blower", a largely unheralded 1986 production that boasts a fine performance by Michael Caine. He plays Frank Jones, a nondescript middle-aged Brit with a somewhat convoluted background. He was a fighter pilot in the  military but his career came to an end when he struck a superior officer. It's then implied that he went on to work for British Intelligence in some capacity, though in reality his act of military insubordination would probably have excluded him from that position. When we are introduced to Frank he is a widower and owner of a small office supply business who is paying a visit to his 28 year-old son Bob for a low key celebration of his offspring's birthday. It turns out that Bob is employed by Government Communications Headquarters (Gchq), which is a branch of the intelligence community.

It’s been awhile since the world has seen a new comedy from Greg Daniels, co-creator of The Office (U.S.) and Parks and Recreation. That all changes this month with Amazon Prime’s new releases for May 2020. That’s right, leading the pack of Amazon originals on May 1 is Daniels’ Upload, a comedy about digital afterlives. That should inject a healthy dose of sci-fi “middletopia” into our lives.

Also premiering in May is the second season of Amazon Prime’s twisty drama Homecoming. This season starts Janelle Monáe and premieres on May 22. After that, the rest of Amazon’s originals this month are fairly film-centric. The Goldfinch, Seberg, and The Vast of Night are the notable original films arriving in May.

Daughters of Darkness...

There are few surefire successes in television. It just so happens that with its new releases for May 2020, Hulu almost certainly found itself one. May 8 sees the debut of all eight episodes of Solar Opposites, the latest sci-fi animated effort from Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland. This is a brand new story featuring a family of aliens crashing to Earth and learning to live amongst the rest of us weirdos. But the animation style and sci-fi themes hew so closely to Rick and Morty that there’s no way this won’t be a hit.

On the off chance Solar Opposites doesn’t set the world ablaze, Hulu has some other intriguing content lottery tickets for May. The Great premieres on May 15 and is a comedic period piece about Catherine the Great starring Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult. You can’t accuse Hulu of not taking big swings this month!

It goes without saying that the pandemic is keeping everyone stuck inside with little to do besides watch television, play video games, and read. Here’s some great news, though: There’s plenty coming to Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, and Amazon Prime in May, so put away the books and the games, and get ready to binge some excellent shows and films.

On Netflix, you can catch some notable comedy entries next month like the Jim Carrey-led Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and Fun with Dick and Jane, while action-horror fans may be delighted to hear that multiple Underworld films will be dropping on the service. The lesser-known Jarhead trilogy will be available on the 1st, and the first two pics in the Back to the Future trilogy will join the third film for streaming. Dozens more movies and shows will join these as well to ensure that Netflix reigns as...

Though much of the entertainment industry is currently paralyzed by Coronavirus and the lockdowns imposed to curb its spread, streaming services are now making out like bandits. Netflix and Amazon Prime both have reported record viewing figures, though that isn’t particularly surprising given that they have an almost literally captive audience.

Anyhow, with all eyes on the small screen, anything new and exciting is eagerly hoovered up. And after learning about all of the new and exciting shows and movies hitting Netflix in May, now it’s Amazon Prime’s turn.

Hulu is out with its list of new additions coming in May, and everything that will be leaving the streaming service at the end of the months.

Highlights include Season 2 of “Ramy,” from Muslim American comedian Ramy Youssef, a new episode of “Into the Dark” called “Delivered,” in which a pregnant woman’s life is thrown into jeopardy when she realizes someone close to her has dark plans for her and the baby, and the series premiere of Hulu original series “The Great” about Catherine the Great, the famous Empress of Russia.

Leaving at the end of the month is “Good Will Hunting,” all three “Free Willy” films, 2006’s “Night of the Living Dead” and 2012’s “Night of the Living Dead: Resurrection,” “Zombieland,” 2002’s “Spider-Man,” and more.

Jason Bourne is back.

It’s been eight years since actor Matt Damon appeared on screen for a Bourne film. In the untitled Bourne film due out in theaters on July 29, Damon will reunite with director Paul Greengrass for the next installment.

Damon hinted in the Entertainment Weekly interview that Bourne is still on his quest for answers for his unknown past. Actors Alicia Vikander and Tommy Lee Jones will be in the cast for this round.

With the title of “The Accountant,” it doesn’t sound like an interesting movie until you’ll discover it stars Anna Kendrick and Ben Affleck. Kendrick plays a clerk who discovers a high-level financial treachery in a robotics company.

The 14th New York Asian Film Festival in partnership with Screen International will honour the Japanese youngster with the International Rising Star Award on July 4.

Sometani will attend the event and the New York premiere of Kabukicho Love Hotel with director director Ryuichi Hiroki.

The 22-year-old actor Sometani has made a name for himself in his home country with lead roles in the likes of Himizu, for which he shared the Marcello Mastroianni Award for best new young actor in Venice with Fumi Nikaido.

The latter was the subject of the International Rising Star Award in 2014.

The festival, set to run from June 26-July 11, will showcase more than 50 films, most of which will receive their Us and North American premieres.

Port Of Call, will receive its North American premiere and Hong Kong actor Aaron Kwok will receive the Star Asia Award.

Kwok earned back-to-back Golden Horse best actor awards in 2005 and 2006 for Divergence and After This Our Exile.

Christopher Golden, best known as the writer of multiple novels focusing on Mike Mignola‘s demon hunter creation Hellboy, is being patched-in by Boom! Studios to write a new series focusing on the rough-riding namesakes of the hit FX series Sons of Anarchy.

Golden seems to think that the motorcycle-riding misfits will make a seamless transition from the small-screen to the page. In an interview with Newsarama.com, Golden says “Sons of Anarchy has the perfect combination of character and action . . . There are regular doses of violence and bloodshed and intrigue, plus the iconic imagery of the American motorcycle gang, but none of that would work if not for the tension that the show creates out of the conflict in the show between personal desire and the honor of the club (and fealty To the club).”

4th Bengaluru International Film Festival (Biffes) that will commence on December 15 will hold a special Retrospective of Iran’s Dariush Mehrjui, who is the guest of honour at the festival. The retrospective will include The Lodgers, Sara, The Pear Tree and The Music Man.

Biffes has announced a competition section for the first time and received about 40 entries. The films in competition include When We Leave by Feo Aladag, Invisible by Michal Aviad, Apartment in Athens by Ruggero Dipaola and Lucky by Avie Luthra among others.

There will be a Retrospective of Michael Cacoyannis of Greece featuring Our Last Spring, The Trojan Woman, Iphigenia, The Cherry Orchard and Sweet Country.

Theodoros Angelopoulos Retrospective comprises Landscape in the Mist, Eternity and a Day and The Weeping Meadow.

Taiwanese director Hsiao-hsien Hou’s Retrospective comprises Cafe Lumiere, Goodbye South Goodbye, Good Men Good Women, A Summer at Grandpa and Daughter of the Nile.

The Independent Film Festival of Boston (IFFBoston) kicks off this Wednesday, and has a number of impressive films in its line-up. The festival will take place at the Somerville Theatre in Davis Square, the Brattle Theatre in Harvard Square, the Coolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline, and the Stuart Street Playhouse in downtown Boston. The festival, complete with over 110 film screenings, filmmaker Q&A sessions, panel discussions, visiting filmmakers, parties and events will showcase the best in current American and International cinema.

The opening night film of the festival is Being Elmo directed by Constance Marks will open the 9th annual festival on April 27th at the Somerville Theatre. The Independent Film Festival of Boston [1] recently released their full line-up and it's a doozy. Sundance favorites such as The Future [2] and Submarine [3] will be there, along with awesome documentaries like Being Elmo [4] (With Elmo In Attendance!!!) and Page One: A Year Inside the New York Times [5]. I'm looking forward to films I wasn't able to catch at Sundance and SXSW, such as the legal documentary Hot Coffee, the heartbreaking How to Die in Oregon, and the new fascinating Conan O'Brien film. Takashi Miike's 13 Assassins [6] also looks like it will rock the house. The full line-up is below. The festival is April 27th through May 4th, and it's one of my favorite movie events of the year. Film-maker associated with Michael Caine

The film director and producer Geoffrey Reeve, who has died aged 77, contributed polished examples of mainstream British cinema in a variety of forms over several decades.

He was born in Tring, Hertfordshire, the son of a compositor who would cycle each day to the printworks in nearby King's Langley. A bright pupil at the local primary, Reeve won a county council scholarship to Berkhamsted school where he excelled in sports, academic subjects and school plays. He was also a notable chorister, an experience he would put to good use for the subplot of the film Shadow Run 50 years later.

After national service with the 7th Royal Tank Regiment in Hong Kong, he went to Exeter College, Oxford, in 1953 to read law. His singing voice and his gift for comic acting made him a useful addition to Oxford's drama and revue companies, and he was apparently...
