Marvel will go further into space than ever before this summer with Guardians Of The Galaxy. Fittingly, the film is also the studio’s riskiest undertaking yet, featuring a talking raccoon, a tree-like being and a blue space pirate, to name just a few of the film’s crazy characters. Luckily, it appears that director James Gunn has struck the perfect balance between goofy humor and awesome action, so Guardians Of The Galaxy seems primed to take off with both critics and audiences when it arrives in August.
A new TV spot for the film has hit the web, offering a few glimpses at villain Korath (Djimon Hounsou) and another character who may or may not be the long-anticipated archvillain Thanos (voiced by Josh Brolin). There’s also shots of an awesome action sequence featuring Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel) and Rocket Raccoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper), and a voice-over...

“Our world is facing an unstoppable threat…send in the Guardians!”
That’s the line from Nova Prime Rael (Glenn Close) in this epic new TV spot for James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy, a preview featuring plenty of great never before seen footage from what many have dubbed Marvel’s riskiest movie yet as they take us into outer space with this quirky team of heroes.
That team consists of Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper), and Groot (Vin Diesel).
The shot of Star-Lord above is likely one of the final scenes in the movie, though who that hand belongs to (and who exactly he’s speaking to) remains to be seen. The answer to the latter could be Josh Brolin’s Thanos, but for now, we’re just going to have to wait and see! What do you guys think?...

Chicago – A TV movie for the silver screen, “Veronica Mars” is a historical film that was Kickstarted into existence by the will of 91,585 backers. Now, it stands like a crossroads in the intersection between TV and film, showing that what may work in TV doesn’t necessarily make for a great film.
In a way that gives the show its hip geeky edge, the dialogue of “Veronica Mars” is constructed around sporadic mad-libs, which includes name-drops to the Barenaked Ladies, “Sharknado”, Clint Eastwood, and the term “asshat”. In an admirable feat, the portion in which characters spout these phrases is fitting - while the “Veronica Mars” may not be all that funny, it doesn’t come as desperate for relevancy. Instead, it positions itself well-within a realistic pop culture stratosphere where movies, music, and celebrities are intertwined.

With the ongoing goal of narrowing the gap between the creative and tech worlds, The Tribeca Film Festival introduced Tribeca Innovation Week this year. Incorporating the already established "Future of Film" series, the week also featured a variety of events which emphasized collaboration between storytellers and innovators in the film world, including Games for Change, Storyscapes and Tfi Interactive. Here are 8 highlights from the week which focused on how filmmakers are utilizing technology to create the the future of storytelling: 1. "Our world has changed so much since we started the festival. When you think back 12 years ago, there wasn't Vine or Google. We weren't talking about tweeting. The ways we communicated with each other and told our stories was vastly different." -- Jane Rosenthal, introducing two interactive films, "Possibilia" and "The Gleam" 2. "You have to join the dots between funding the work, supporting the work, distributing the work, exhibiting the.

Before I go too deep into this one, I should say up front that I don't endorse any of the claims in this story, and I'm staying neutral on the veracity of whole thing... but it's just too damn eerie and fascinating to ignore. Photo: FreeOurWorld.org A recent ad on Craigslist, posted by an organization calling itself Free Our World, has folks in Los Angeles (and beyond) a bit baffled: linking to a huge collection of YouTube videos posted by a man named Richard Bruce, the lengthy post invites interested parties to submit visual evidence of a vast, far-reaching conspiracy by a reptilian race known as “Draconians,” whom the group claims have infiltrated all levels of human government, the military, police and the media. Photo: FreeOurWorld.org Some of the most-viewed clips on Bruce's channel claim to reveal hidden alien characteristics of public figures, ranging from President Obama to Angelina Jolie.

The Sundance Institute has announced (19) the first Sundance Institute Episodic Story Lab, set to run this autumn.
The six-day immersive sessions will support drama and comedy writing will be supported at the Lab under the guidance of Michelle Satter (pictured), founding director of the Institute’s Feature Film Program.
Among the Institute-supported artists who have worked on series for TV and online platforms are Cary Fukunaga, Lena Dunham, Louis Ck, Mark Duplass, Lisa Cholodenko, Jason Katims, Rodrigo Garcia, Todd Haynes, Rj Cutler, Mike White, Robert Rodriguez, Ava DuVernay, Jill Soloway and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
Robert Redford, president and founder of Sundance Institute, said, “Sundance Institute has always worked to develop and support a next generation of independent artists. Our world is introduced/re-introduced to the universe of “Veronica Mars” with a slideshow and voiceover, which could be the opening credits for the original TV show for all I know. After the catchup we find our title hero (played with lightness by Kristen Bell) interviewing for a job at a law firm, where her potential boss Gayle Buckley (Jamie Lee Curtis) helps fill in more background with obvious exposition. We learn not long after that Veronica has a boyfriend (Chris Lowell) as well, who has become a good-humored support despite her history that everyone seems to know about.

About nine years ago, at the age of 52, British actress Lesley Nicol of "Downton Abbey" met a spiritual practitioner a few years older than her, named Da'aboth. About seven years ago they married -- a first marriage for them both.
"What I'm saying is, don't listen to anyone," Nicol tells Zap2it over tea and British pub food at the Ye Olde King's Head in Santa Monica, Calif. "And because, I'm proving here and now that the rules that say, 'Oh, you're over 45, there are no parts for you.' Well, actually, I've just got the best part I've ever had, and yes, I did just fall in love.
"We got married, and it's been amazing."
Nicol plays Mrs. Beryl Patmore, the cook at the Edwardian manor house that is the setting for the period drama, which returns for its fourth season Sunday (Jan. 5) as part of PBS' "Masterpiece."

The BBC has today announced an ambitious four years of programming for their First World War Centenary coverage, the biggest pan-BBC season in the broadcaster's history.
From 2014-2018, the BBC will feature specially dedicated coverage on TV, Radio and online, and across international, national and local services.
Leading the coverage is Jeremy Paxman's Britain's Great War, a four-part documentary season which will start in early 2014. The series will explore how Britain and the lives of British people were altered by the conflict.
Other programming highlights include BBC Two's The Necessary War, presented by Sir Max Hastings, and Niall Ferguson's The Pity Of War, which will both look at the war from very different perspectives.
Rupert Murdoch will be interviewed in Gallipoli, a documentary about the British Empire's most humiliating episode of the First World War. Murdoch will speak about his father, who was a whistle-blower on the botched campaign.

After a lengthy hiatus from the studio, Norwegian blackened hard rock unit Satyricon, comprised of core members Satyr (Sigurd Wongraven on vocals, guitar & bass) & Frost (Kjetil-Vidar Haraldstad on drums) and a revolving team of supporting players, have returned with their self-titled eighth studio album. While they began as a strictly black metal band during that genre's Scandinavian glory days, Satyricon later transitioned to a more straightforward style of melodic hard rock, though they continue to embrace black metal's themes and retain a few of its musical motifs. For fans of horror and occult-oriented rock and metal who find traditional Norwegian black metal a bit too... well, let's say challenging to the ears (old school bands embrace those lo-fi elements as part of the genre's kill-the-rules mindset), Satyricon is both accessible and fist-pumping intense – a balance which makes for a pretty effective hook. That signature sound continues for the most part...

The “Nolanverse”. It’s got to be up there with Fox’s X-Men Universe (which should arguably be called the “Donnerverse” thanks to the machinations of the dreadful Lauren Shuler Donner) as one of the most controversial takes on a comic book character’s world ever. After all, it committed the sin of taking Batman and placing him in a realistic and grounded world. Gone were the outlandish gadgets and colourful rogues gallery, and in were – the still fairly ludicrous – creations of Lucius Fox and foes who (worryingly) could very easily exist in Our world. Those are of course just a couple of examples, but the point is that Christopher Nolan’s take on the Caped Crusader will forever divide fans. Some were able to forgive the differences to the comic books for what was ultimately one hell of a trilogy, while others simply could not get over the fact...

Our world is so connected now that moments of solitude, peace and quiet can often be hard to come by without interruptions and distractions. From the real people in our lives to the virtual ones we interact with on Facebook and Twitter, there’s almost always someone else intruding on our private, little bubble. You’d think we could simply turn off the phone, iPad and laptop and go sit outside with a good book, but for many people that appears to be physically impossible. But what if you had no choice? An unnamed woman (Martina Gedeck) who we’ll call Frau (if only because IMDb lists her that way) arrives at a remote Austrian hunting cabin with two friends and their dog. They’ve only barely settled in when the couple decide to walk into town with the promise of returning by nightfall, but still absent the following morning Frau goes looking for them. She...

Chicago – If you don’t like the roles you’re being offered, why not write them yourself? That has been the philosophy of actress Brit Marling, who taught herself the art of screenwriting in order to create the sort of complex female roles Hollywood avoids like the plague. She’s played a tragically damaged woman in Mike Cahill’s sci-fi drama, “Another Earth,” and a beguiling cult leader in Zal Batmanglij’s psychological thriller, “Sound of My Voice.”
In her new film, a topical mind-bender entitled, “The East,” Marling re-teams with director Batmanglij for her most audacious effort to date. She plays Sarah, an operative assigned by an intelligence firm to infiltrate an anarchist group (dubbed “The East”) notorious for its anti-corporate activism. But as she befriends the tight-knit group headed by the dashing Benji (Alexander Skarsgård), Sarah finds her views starting to radically shift. Hollywood Chicago spoke with Marling...

Guess who's excited about the potential "Mean Girls" musical?
According to Allure magazine, Amanda Seyfried -- the "Les Misérables" actress who played the ditzy blonde character Karen Smith in the "Mean Girls" movie -- has been eagerly awaiting an announcement that the stage adaptation of everyone's favorite 2004 teen comedy is actually happening.
She reveals to Allure she's not too keen to pick up where Plastic member Karen left off. Instead she wants to grab Rachel McAdams' former role as the vicious and vain Regina George. "I desperately want to be Regina," Seyfried says.
The actress went on to reveal some juicy tidbits about her past cast mate, Lindsay Lohan. But all we're concerned about is the fact that "Espn"-endowed Karen wants to switch places with teen queen Regina. Our world is turning upside down!

“The Earth is at peace. There is no hunger. There is no violence. The environment is healed. Our world has never been more perfect,” intones the opening narration for The Host, and, as anyone who has ever seen or read any science-fiction knows, this is usually followed by a big, fat “but.” In the case of Andrew Niccol’s adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s best-selling novel, the caveat is that humans have been taken over by a race of extraterrestrial beings called “the Souls.” They enter into our bodies and do away with our minds, replacing our brute, confused, emotional consciousness with their highly advanced, never-driving-above-the-speed-limit selves. When they take us over, our eyes change to a super-shiny blue, so you always know if somebody’s a human or a host. The result is a planet now populated by nonviolent, trusting beings with crystalline eyes, stylish suits, and awesome shoes.

Los Angeles — There's something about novelist Stephenie Meyer that induces formerly interesting directors to suddenly make films that are slow, silly and soporific. It happened consistently on "The Twilight Saga," and it happens again on "The Host," once-provocative writer-director Andrew Niccol's adaptation of Meyer's 600-plus-page post-Twilight novel that spent 26 weeks at No. 1 on the New York Times best-seller list beginning in 2008.
Aimed squarely at the same tweens who contributed so generously to the bank accounts of everyone who became associated with Meyer's vampire franchise, this one swills in the same sort of thwarted Victorian-style romanticism while indulging a similar moonstruck vibe that can seemingly only be resolved in Meyer's work by selfless female sacrifice. Not to be deterred, Meyer's army of female fans surely will deliver a big opening for Open Road, but anything resembling Twilight numbers is a fantasy. Meyer intends to expand The Host into a trilogy,...

This is officially the fourth trailer for Andrew Niccol’s “The Host”, based on the novel by Stephenie Meyer (of “Twilight” fame, or infamy, depending on your love of glittering vampires). It sells the teenage love story angle, which is apparently a big hit with the kids. Then again, I wouldn’t know. Whenever I try to ask “the kids” anything, cops show up. Go figure. Please to watch. (Or not. See if I care.) The Host is a riveting story about the survival of love and the human spirit in a time of war. Our world has been invaded by an unseen enemy. Humans become hosts for these invaders, their minds taken over while their bodies remain intact. Most of humanity has succumbed. When Melanie (Saoirse Ronan), one of the few remaining “wild” humans, is captured, she is certain it is her end. Wanderer, the invading “soul” who has been given Melanie’s body,...

Companion books are interesting creatures. Part reference book, part resource guide, part overview of an important work or corpus of works, a companion book has to function as both an incisive look at the work in question and be accessible enough for new readers and the merely curious. Happily, Bev Vincent’s The Dark Tower Companion succeeds on all levels.
This is Vincent’s second book on the subject, following 2004’s The Road to the Dark Tower. A somewhat academic work intended for those well-versed in the series, Road cemented Vincent’s reputation as one of the world’s leading experts in Stephen King’s Dark Tower milieu. The Dark Tower Companion is the guide for the rest of the world, especially those Stephen King readers who have been touched in some way by King’s magnum opus through the references in his other work, but who have yet to...

Watch a new clip called "Stop Your Vehicle" from Open Road Films' The Host, starring Saoirse Ronan, Max Irons, Diane Kruger, Jake Abel and William Hurt, Frances Fisher, Chandler Canterbury and Boyd Holbrook. With the success of the Twilight franchise, one has to wonder how much this one will turn in from its domestic debut come March 29th. Andrew Niccol's a very diverse director, with experience in multiple genres, including the more recent Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried starrer In Time, as well as Lord of War, Gattaca and The Truman Show. When looking at The Host and comparing his previous sci-fi-orientated work, one can see clearly why he fits this project so well. Andrew Niccol redeems himself. Or at least, we hope he redeems himself with “The Host”, making up for that Godawful “In Time”, a film that was such a failure on so many levels, you start to forget that Niccol is the guy who wrote “The Truman Show” and directed “Gattaca”. Fingers crossed! The Host is a riveting story about the survival of love and the human spirit in a time of war. “The Host” is based on the sci-fi novel by Stephenie Meyer, who also wrote the “Twilight” books, so basically this is as “sci-fi” as that franchise was horror, and that was never all that “horror” to begin with. But apparently there’s only one movie here, and not a trilogy or multi-parter. I’m frankly shocked the studio didn’t try to stretch it out into at least two movies, what with Meyer’s name attached and all. Go figure. Anyways, take a gander at two clips from the film. It’s certainly got a pretty good cast, and Andrew Niccol always does great work. Well, most of the time. The Host is a riveting story about the survival of love and the human spirit in a time of war. Our world has been invaded by an unseen enemy. Humans become hosts for these invaders, their minds taken over while their bodies remain intact.

With The Host set to be released in theatres on March 29th, of course thoughts are turning to whether or not we have a potential franchise here, and in a recent interview author Stephenie Meyer shed a bit more light on things.
Meyer told The AP that she is already working on a sequel to the 2008 novel she began writing as an escape from the editing of Eclipse, the third book in her Twilight vampire saga. And now that it, too, is reaching the big screen, she has more books in mind.
"Once you've created characters that have life to them, unless you kill them all, you know where their stories go. You're always aware of what happens next," Meyer said. "I've got outlines for the next books. I would hope that this would be a three-book arc, but we'll see."
