Emmy-and-Golden Globe winning actor. Oscar-nominated producer. Director. Writer. In his 50 years in the industry, Danny DeVito has worn many hats, becoming one of the most successful and popular entertainers of his generation.
Daniel Michael DeVito, Jr. was born on November 17, 1944, in New Jersey, with multiple epiphyseal dysplasia. Also known as Fairbank’s disease, this rare genetic disorder affects bone growth and contributed to his short stature. This has not hindered his successes, beginning with his training at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and early work in the theater.
In 1975, DeVito successfully reprised his off-Broadway role in “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” in the film version, and soon found success as Louie DePalma in the television sitcom “Taxi,” for which he received four Primetime Emmy and four Golden Globe nominations, winning the Emmy in 1978 and the Globe in 1980. Searchlight Pictures would love to work with Emerald Fennell on a future project. But times are tough, even for a distributor owned by Disney (and even with its former boss running the whole operation), and Searchlight gets consistently “priced out” by the deep pocketed streamers.
Katie Goodson-Thomas, the head of international production and development for Searchlight in the UK, was blunt about her specialized-distribution business and the larger competitive marketplace.
“We can’t be competitive with Netflix. It’s just not going to happen…or Apple or Amazon,” she said in a panel discussion at the BFI London Film Festival (via THR).
Goodson-Thomas mentioned Fennell as an example of how Searchlight gets beat out by the streamers and how that “happens on a daily basis — it really does.” The “Saltburn” director is next making an adaptation of “Wuthering Heights” for MRC that will star Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi. Searchlight Pictures’ top international exec Katie Goodson-Thomas has acknowledged the constant battle the specialty studio has against the deep-pockets of streamers when it comes to securing projects.
Speaking at an industry talk at the BFI London Film Festival, Goodson-Thomas, head of international production and development, said that Searchlight being “priced out” by streamers was something “that happens on a daily basis, it really does.”
She added: “But we just can’t be competitive with Netflix of Apple or Amazon.”
Goodson-Thomas pointed to Emerald Fennell — someone she said she’d “love to work with” — and her upcoming “Wuthering Heights” adaptation, a film Searchlight simply wouldn’t have the finances to support. “But I think she’s an extraordinary filmmaker and I want her film to be made so I’m happy for her to go to those people who have the money to finance it,” she said.

Searchlight Pictures “Can’t Be Competitive” With Giants Like Netflix But Score With “Humanity”: Exec
Searchlight Pictures top executive Katie Goodson-Thomas told the BFI London Film Festival (Lff) on Tuesday how passion and “humanity” make the studio special even though it gets “priced out” by streaming giants on a daily basis.
Sharing her thoughts and behind-the-scenes insight during a spotlight conversation at the 68th edition of the festival in the British capital, the studio’s head of international production and development said “we are quite light” in the U.K. as a team, with eight staffers in Britain, four of which are lawyers who work across the whole company. The studio is behind movies like The Banshees of Inisherin, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Poor Things, All of Us Strangers, Jojo Rabbit, Boys Don’t Cry, Napoleon Dynamite and Little Miss Sunshine.

“The Problem With People” starts with a montage of the many wars and conflicts happening in the world right now. A dying Irish man, Fergus (Des Keough) bemoans this crushing violence affecting humanity as his TV blares out the news. It’s the broadest starting point in a film that always chooses the broadest jokes and situations. While the comedic script, written by the film’s star Paul Reiser with Wally Marzano-Lesnevich, favors stereotypes to specificity, director Chris Cottam keeps the rhythm humming nicely enough for its 100-minute running time for the film to be mildly amusing.
Before he goes, Kes wants to settle at least one war: the one raging inside his own family. Many years ago, his grandfather had a falling out with his brother, who then immigrated to America. He tasks his son Ciaran (Colm Meaney) with contacting his long-lost cousin Barry (Reiser) in New York to initiate a family reconciliation.

What a difference a movie makes…

The full ensemble cast is announced for the remake of 1989’s The War Of The Roses which will star Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch.
It’s been just over a month since we learned that Jay Roach would be remaking the 1989 relationship comedy, War Of The Roses and we now have a fuller idea of what the film’s cast looks like.
We already knew that the new adaptation would be starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman as the central couple, who just like Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner in the 1989 original, proceed with a nasty yet entertaining divorce.
A fresh report (via Deadline) has now confirmed that the film’s cast will be rounded out by Kate McKinnon, Andy Samberg and Doctor Who's Ncuti Gatwa.
McKinnon and Samberg are both established comedy stars who’ve led films themselves, so grabbing them both in supporting roles is a real coup.

And just when you thought Hollywood would shift away from the remake and reboot craze, news of another remake just arrived. In 1989, Hollywood legend Danny DeVito directed the satirical black comedy The War of the Roses, starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner. The film was based on the 1981 novel of the same name written by Warren Adler. The movie follows a wealthy couple with a seemingly perfect life that crumbles at one point, and the perfection soon turns into a horrible and outrageous divorce.
The original movie was critically acclaimed and was a success for DeVito. Today, 35 years after the original, it has been reported that a remake of the movie is in the making, with Jay Roach attached to direct. On top of that, some interesting casting information has been revealed.
Namely, alongside this, it has been confirmed that Oscar-nominee Benedict Cumberbatch, best known for his interpretation of a...

Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman will star in “The Roses,” a reimagining of the 1989 classic “The War of the Roses.” The dark comedy, which is currently in development, will be directed by Jay Roach (“Bombshell,” “Meet the Parents”) and is written by Tony McNamara (“Poor Things,” “The Great”) based on the novel by Warren Adler.
The film follows picture-perfect couple Theo (Cumberbatch) and Ivy (Colman), who have successful careers, great kids and an enviable sex life. But underneath the façade of the perfect family is a tinderbox of competition and resentment that’s ignited when Theo’s professional dreams come crashing down.
“‘The Roses’ is a wildly funny, bigger than life, and yet deeply human story,” said Searchlight president Matthew Greenfield announcing the project. “With Jay at the helm, and Benedict and Olivia and Tony, we have a dream team bringing it to life.”

Swanning around Italy like side characters from the second season of “The White Lotus,” well-to-do gay couple Dom (Nick Kroll) and Cole (Andrew Rannells) have decided the world is against them. As Americans, they live at a time in a country when they can legally get married, adopt and do pretty much everything straight people can — but they’re also old enough to remember when that wasn’t the case, and so they anticipate rejection and homophobia at every turn. They’re prepared for the worst, and somehow they attract it.
Loosely inspired by filmmakers Brian Crano and David Craig’s bumpy road to fatherhood, catty black comedy “I Don’t Understand You” depicts a stretch in Dom and Cole’s relationship when everything seems to be going their way … until suddenly it doesn’t. While celebrating their anniversary in Italy, the pair get the news that the baby they’ve...

Alice Cooper may have sung about the man behind the mask but he once tried to be the man behind the movie, pitching to Johnny Depp that he and Amber Heard should star in a remake of The War of the Roses, the 1989 movie about a bitter split of a married couple.
While Johnny Depp and Amber Heard were engaged in their circus of a trial in 2022, Depp’s friend and Hollywood Vampires bandmate (Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry rounds out the core three members) Alice Cooper told the actor, “I have a great idea. You and Amber do a remake of The War of the Roses. Who wouldn’t go and see that?” Not a bad take, since the Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner movie told of a couple on the brink of divorce who do whatever they can in an attempt to drive the other one out of the house.

Alice Cooper reveals he has only once ever brought up with his friend Johnny Depp the subject of the actor’s acrimonious divorce, which saw Depp and his ex-wife Amber Heard embroiled in courtroom battles on either side of the Atlantic.
Cooper, who has for eight years played in the band Hollywood Vampires with Depp, told the UK’s Times newspaper that he once suggested to Depp: “’I have a great idea. You and Amber do a remake of The War of the Roses. Who wouldn’t go and see that?’”
According to Cooper, Depp laughed at the idea of reprising the 1989 movie, in which married couple played by Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner battled with each other, although Cooper added that his friend has always tried to dodge the attention his personal life generates: “Johnny is a good guitarist and in a way he would have been happiest doing that,...

As one of Germany’s premier female directors since the 1970s, Margarethe von Trotta is no stranger to stories of women, who, like her, have defied conventions in milieus typically dominated by men.
Whether portraying the life and death of a revolutionary socialist (Rosa Luxemburg), a groundbreaking philosopher (Hannah Arendt) or a medieval nun, composer and botanist (Vision), many of von Trotta’s best movies have been carried by protagonists who refuse to bow down to gender and social norms.
This was certainly the case with Ingeborg Bachmann, the celebrated Austrian poet and writer who lived defiantly against her time and wound up paying the price for it, dying prematurely at the age of 47. Played by an illuminating Vicky Krieps, she’s the centerpiece of this handsomely mounted but rather stolid period piece, which chronicles Bachmann’s cantankerous doomed romance with Swiss playwright Max Frisch and the trip she takes...

Kathleen Turner has recalled a potential relationship she almost had with former co-star Michael Douglas.
The actor appeared alongside the actor in three films in the 1980s. These were Robert Zemeckis’s 1984 adventure film Romancing the Stone, its sequel Jewel of the Nile (1985) and 1989 comedy The War of the Roses.
In a new interview, Turner, 68, said that her friendship with Douglas, 78, almost became romantic.
While the pair were filming Romancing the Stone in 193, Turner was single while Douglas was spearated from Diandra Luker, his first wife.
“I think we might have been falling in love,” Turner told The Guardian.
“But then Diandra flew down and made it clear that she did not consider Michael to be available.”
Turner continued: “So that ended that because I can’t get involved with another woman’s relationship. But oh my, that attention is delicious.”

Through 15 seasons, "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" has proven time and again that its cast and writers are willing to go just about anywhere for a laugh. Every member of the main cast -- Rob McElhenney (Mac), Charlie Day (Charlie), Glenn Howerton (Dennis), Kaitlin Olson (Sweet Dee) and Danny DeVito (Frank) -- has been shorn of their dignity multiple times. The sheer fearlessness of "Always Sunny" keeps viewers coming back, and leaves the show open to disgusting new opportunities.
It's this sense that there isn't a line the show is willing to cross that allowed the other cast members to pull a rather elaborate prank on DeVito. The veteran actor appears to be having the time of his life as part of this lunatic ensemble, and has hurtled himself into many an unflattering situation. But every man has his limits, and his collaborators found his red line when they presented him with a fake script.

If the road to hell is paved with good intentions, then good intentions are also sending “Little Demon” to TV’s fiery pit of no return. Over its first three episodes, the adult animated sitcom created and written by Darcy Fowler, Seth Kirschner, and Kieran Valla is high on crude jokes — with nudity, bloodshed, and cringe comedy aplenty — but low on ingenuity, taking a novel premise and steering it toward conventionality. In a crowded landscape of TV-ma animation (unless you’re working for HBO Max), simply talking the filthy talk isn’t enough, and the DeVito family’s fictional foray into hell needs more pep in its step if it’s going to avoid damnation.

If not for the Douglas family, who knows what would have become of Danny DeVito’s career? In DeVito’s early acting days, he was given a role in a movie produced by and starring the legendary Kirk Douglas, but the role that really put DeVito on the map came in One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, produced by Kirk’s son, Michael Douglas. Over the years, DeVito and Michael Douglas went on to make several films together, including Romancing the Stone, The Jewel of the Nile, and The War of the Roses. DeVito, who is now voicing the character of Satan on the new FX show Little Demon, told us that his good fortune with the Douglas family wasn’t exactly coincidental — it turns out that DeVito and Michael Douglas became close before either of them had made a movie. The words “War of the Roses” take on a lighter meaning in “The Rose Maker,” a sweet, gently scented French diversion that is likely to teach you far more than you already knew about hybridizing flowers, even if it doesn’t have a whole lot else to say. Following veteran rose farmer Eve Vernet as she attempts to keep her family business afloat in the face of soulless corporate competition — even if it entails a little botanical skulduggery — Pierre Pinaud’s short but unhurried film benefits immensely from the warmly flinty presence of Catherine Frot (“Marguerite”) in the lead, lending a sense of purpose and personality to a character without much color on the page.
Outside her performance, “The Rose Maker” is short on texture and shading, except when it comes to the spectacular multi-hued roses bred by Eve, and caressed by Dp Guillaume Deffontaines’ camera with dewy reverence. Pinaud...

Yellowstone star and Academy Award-winning filmmaker Kevin Costner paid emotional tribute to his longtime collaborator, production designer Ida Random as she received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 26th annual Art Directors Guild Awards tonight. And his tribute included the revelation that he might not have an an acting career without her intervention.
From the stage at the Intercontinental Los Angeles Downtown, an admittedly nervous Costner – who’s worked with Random on his directorial efforts including The Postman – recounted the critical impact she had when he was an extra on the 1981 film Frances, on which Random served as art director.
“For six years I’d been trying to break into Hollywood, and despite all my best efforts, I was just unable to get a SAG card,” said Costner, who had a minute appearance in a scene set in an alleyway outside a theater where actress Frances Fischer, played by Jessica Lange,...

Michael Douglas may not have won an Emmy for the third and final season of “The Kominsky Method” like his character Sandy does in the series finale, but the actor has another shot at a trophy for the role. Douglas picked up two more Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations for the Netflix comedy in comedy actor and ensemble categories, and has now received bids for every season of the show.
The comedy actor race has no shortage of industry veterans this year. Douglas has far and away the most SAG nominations of the bunch with a total of eight, including two wins for the film ensemble of “Traffic” and for his individual performance in the TV movie “Behind the Candelabra.” He’s facing off against Jason Sudeikis, last year’s champion in this category for “Ted Lasso” who now has four lifetime citations from the guild. Sudeikis’s costar Brett Goldstein...

In the past, Emmy voters tended to like one show and then let it repeat for several seasons as the champ in the Comedy Series category. Until very recently, just three series enjoyed multiple runs at the gold: there were three wins in a row for 30 Rock, followed by five wins in a row for Modern Family, then three wins in a row for Veep. However, in recent Emmy Awards the winner in this category has gone to three different shows in as many years: The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (2018), Fleabag (2019), and Schitt’s Creek (2020).
In all those cases the win was overwhelming, but also came with their first nominations as Best Comedy Series. What’s interesting about the race this year is that none of them will be defending their crown, since Fleabag and Schitt’s Creek are history, and Mrs.
