The Big Blue (1988)

Goofs

The Big Blue

Edit

Continuity

Jacques gives Johana a bunch of balloons by the dolphin pool. A few seconds later the balloons change color, pink ones disappear. New balloons are yellow and translucent.
Jacques takes off his sneakers, then jumps into the pool with his sneakers on (although in the director's Cut we see him replace his shoes).
In the first competition, Jacques reaches 110 meters (360 feet). However, the slab he brings back with him says 108 meters.
Johanna's cigarette when she is giving her initial report to her boss in New York.

Factual errors

Unlike SCUBA divers, free divers become negatively buoyant below depths of around 15m (varies a bit depending on body type, weight belt, and wet-suit thickness).

In the final scene when Jacques lets go of the sled to swim toward the dolphin, he appears neutrally buoyant. In reality, at that depth, he would have had to actively swim toward the surface to avoid passively sinking deeper.
In some scenes when the divers emerge from the sea, after a deep dive you can actually see the bottom of the sea! It's no more than 7-8 meters deep.

Revealing mistakes

Enzo would have very marked lines on his face from "mask squeeze" from going to those depths at the end, when Jacque is holding him.

Errors in geography

Enzo tells Jacques to come work with him on an oil rig in Norway, but the rig shown in the movie has the number SEDCO 700 which was an oil rig off the coast of Nigeria.

Character error

When Jacques and Johana find Uncle Louis in the bath, Jacques gets his attention by putting his thumb over the end of his snorkel but when he gets out of the water the mouthpiece is the wrong way around and he wouldn't have been able to breathe underwater.
