Nigel Hawthorne once wrote of his experience making Demolition Man opposite Sylvester Stallone and Wesley Snipes – and it’d be fair to say he wasn’t a fan.
The late, great Nigel Hawthorne left behind following his death in 2001 a wonderful, cherishable collection of screen credits. What’s more, he wrote about them in his terrific memoir, Straight Face, that he completed shortly before his passing, and was published posthumously. The Madness Of King George and his role as Sir Humphrey in Yes Minister and Yes Prime Minister took pride of place in a terrific list of credits.
But one film that Hawthorne wasn’t a fan of was his Hollywood debut.
He devoted in the aforementioned book just three pages to his experience of working on the 1993 science fiction blockbuster Demolition Man, a movie for which I confess to having no little love. It was fair to say that...

Lionsgate has separated itself from its former streaming partner Starz. Does that complicate streaming arrangements for its movies?
Lionsgate is ready to go it alone. The studio is now on its own, having separated from the Starz streaming service and its companion premium cable channel after a years-long process. The Lionsgate movie and TV studio will continue to churn out titles like “Ballerina,” new movies from the “Hunger Games” franchise, and more, but it will do so without being officially tied to Starz.
When Starz and Lionsgate existed under the same corporate umbrella, it was easy to say where the studio’s movies would stream once they left theaters. Now, the question is a bit more complex, but that’s where The Streamable’s experts come in! We’ll let you know where to stream Lionsgate movies when they leave theaters, making the whole process easier.

When I turned 15, I developed a sudden compulsion to watch every 1980s and '90s action movie I could get my hands on -- not just the "Rambo" and "Terminator" films or the "RoboCop" and "Predator" movies, but also "Die Hard," "Commando," "TimeCop," and even "Cobra." The campier, the better. So, you can imagine what a delight it was to learn that the stars of all these ridiculous classics were joining forces for a throwback action flick in 2010.
I loved "The Expendables" then, and I love "The Expendables" now, but let's be honest; The franchise has been bad as often as it's been good. And even when it's good, it's that roll-your-eyes-and-laugh kind of good. Daring? Certainly. It takes a certain brazenness to throw Sylvester Stallone, Dolph Lundgren, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Mickey Rourke, Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jean-Claude Van Damme, and Chuck Norris into a blender so many years...

Director Rian Johnson is known for making one of the most disliked Star Wars movies. However, the filmmaker is also behind one of the best sci-fi movies to feature Bruce Willis. Looper is Johnson’s 2012 sci-fi thriller starring Willis that is widely considered one of the best time travel movies.
Given how notoriously difficult the concept is to nail, it is no surprise that Johnson’s take resulted in one of the best movies in Willis’ career. Here is why Looper nailed time travel and why the sci-fi movie is worth revisiting after Johnson announced his next project.
Rian Johnson’s Looper Nailed Time Travel With One Creative Choice
Directed by Rian Johnson, Looper was released in 2012, emerging as a critical and commercial success, grossing $176.5 million against a $30 million budget (via Box Office Mojo). It also currently holds a critics’ score of 93% on review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes.

Netflix has officially given the green light to its live-action Assassin’s Creed series, after years of waiting. In a press release today, Netflix confirmed that Roberto Patino and David Wiener will lead the project as creators, showrunners, and executive producers. Both are known for working on shows like Dmz and Halo.
The new series will focus on the classic battle between Assassins and Templars. According to Netflix, it will follow people fighting to shape the future of humanity. But the creators say the story goes deeper than just action.
In a joint statement, Patino and Wiener said the show is “about people searching for purpose, struggling with questions of identity and destiny and faith. It is about power and violence and sex and greed and vengeance. But more than anything, this is a show about the value of human connection, across cultures, across time.”

Cable channels are being forced to band together as legacy media companies look toward a streaming future.
It’s hard to overstate just how much change the cable industry is currently undergoing. Recently, multiple major media companies like Comcast and Warner Bros. Discovery have made moves to separate their core businesses from their linear networks, and earlier this month, it was reported that Disney was exploring a sale of A+E Global Networks, which it shares ownership of with Hearst Communications. Now, a new report indicates that a surprising but familiar name in the media world is exploring the possibility of acquiring A+E.
Key Details: To the stars?: Starz is reportedly looking into purchasing A+E Global Networks. Chance of a lifetime: If consummated, the deal would bring A&e, Lifetime, and Starz under the same corporate banner. Fierce competition: Roku’s president, Allen Media Group, and Hearst could...

Where do movie ideas come from? For some filmmakers, it's simply a lightning bolt of an idea from nowhere. For others, it's a brand-mandated piece of intellectual property. And for some, all they have to do is take a look - for it is, indeed, in a book.
Some of our greatest and best movies are adaptations of books, from "Gone With the Wind" to "The Godfather" to even "Die Hard." It makes sense from the studio perspective -- there's mitigated risk and a built-in audience -- and it makes sense from a creative perspective, as it's interesting to see an artist find corners of their voice they couldn't on their own (sometimes making something better than the book). And we've got more book-to-movie adaptations coming down the pike to enjoy and analyze.
So, for all future film forecasters, please...

“Die Hard” is a quintessential action film that redefined the genre across the late ‘80s, ‘90s, and beyond. So, it’s no surprise that every few years, studios try to recapture that 1988 lightning in a bottle—by straight-up ripping it off. Its success is owed to many things: tight writing, smart direction/cinematography, a stacked cast, and a messy but sincere charm. But admirers and imitators alike believe the secret lies in the formula. And what a formula it is. Start with an everyman, maybe a cop, but never a supercop. Drop them into an unwinnable situation against their will.
Give them personal stakes. Let them take out a parade of colorful henchmen one by one before reaching the final boss. Tag on a happy ending, and you’ve got an instant classic. Storytelling buffs might call this The Hero’s Journey. But if you add varied European terrorists, a breathtaking yet contained setting,...

Maggie Q might just be good vibes personified. The Hawaiian-born actress, known for kicking actual ass over four seasons of Nikita and on features such as Mission Impossible III, Live Free or Die Hard and The Protégé, isn’t just the opposite of intimidating over coffee in Beverly Hills. She’s showing pictures of her dogs in the custom-made tuxedos she commissioned for her recent wedding, sharing a recommendation for a budget-friendly veterinary dentist — canine teeth are quite expensive — and winning over the staff of the Four Seasons hotel where she’s spent a couple of days.
She’s in town to promote Ballard, her new Amazon Prime Video drama that premiered July 9. A spinoff of another spinoff (Bosch follow-up, Bosch: Legacy) and based on similar IP (it hails from blockbuster novelist Michael Connelly), it stars Q as the titular lead of the LAPD’s cold cases unit. Since its 1993 release, multiple efforts have been made to either reboot or continue Sylvester Stallone’s high-altitude action film, Cliffhanger. One of the more recent iterations had Stallone attached in a supporting role that would have seen him pass the torch to a new generation of mountain climbers, much like his approach in Creed. However, that version fell apart following a major creative overhaul, which brought on a new set of cast and characters as well as a new director. The project was subsequently reimagined as a gender-swapped remake, with Lily James taking on the lead role. Now, James has provided an encouraging update, confirming that the film has made significant progress and is on track to hit screens soon.
James will next be seen in the movie, Finally Dawn, due out next weekend on July 18, 2025. While promoting the film recently, the actress spoke to ScreenRant, in an interview where...

Lily James teases that her upcoming movie Cliffhangeris very different from Sylvester Stallone's original movie she's remaking. News of the Cliffhanger reboot movie came last year as James was revealed to be the franchise's new star, with Jaume Collet-Serra directing and Pierce Brosnan acting as a co-star.
The upcoming film is a remake of Sylvester Stallone's 1993 action film directed by Renny Harlin. He starred as a mountain climber who is thrust into a position to stop a plane robbery after failing to save his girlfriend. Cliffhanger was a huge hit, grossing $255 million worldwide, making the TriStar Pictures release the seventh biggest film of 1993.

Timothy Olyphant is all set to play the main role in Noah Hawley’s FX show, Alien: Earth. As the name suggests, the show comes from the famous Alien franchise. There’s a lot to look forward to in the new show, including Olyphant’s effortless performance in a mentor-like role. The actor is famously known for his roles in the shows Deadwood and Justified.
However, there is a movie role that is not often talked about, where Olyphant’s performance was probably the only saving grace. In a new installment of his feature series This Day That Year, Subhash K Jha refocuses on Anubhav Sinha’s Dus, a slick action flick with and all star cast, which just celebrated 20 years since its release.
This film is so cool, you probably need sunglasses to watch it. Unlike its thriller predecessors like Sanjay Gupta’s Kaante, Vikram Bhatt’s Elaan, and Rajiv Rai’s Asambhav, Dus isn’t phony-cool. Nor does it doesn’t seem like a poor country cousin of the Die Hard and Mission Impossible series.
Sure, the screenplay writers Yash and Vinay have borrowed huge chunks—sometimes without alteration—from several Hollywood actioners. Jensen Ackles' new show, Countdown, which is being touted as a Reacher replacement, seems reminiscent of action movies from the '80s. The show's creator, Derek Haas, has now opened up about what inspired him to make the show, revealing the real season behind its '80s vibe.
Haas said that when he was talking to Amazon, he could not help but recall how much he loved the vibe of action movies like Die Hard, Romancing the Stone, and Lethal Weapon. Realizing how most shows in the crime genre had become too dark and cynical and less like the ones from the '80s, he wished to create something that brought back the classic energy.
The showrunner also shed light on how he learned about task forces through a Chicago intelligence cop. This paved the way for him to center Countdown around a task force that investigates a murder before uncovering a massive conspiracy.

In the world of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, being a member of the McPoyle family means you’re a terrifying inbred weirdo. Yet, even in the sea of nauseating McPoyles, a good candidate for the most offensively strange is the deaf-mute Margaret McPoyle.
Played by Thesy Surface (who has neither her character’s trademark mustache nor unibrow Irl), Margaret McPoyle first appears briefly in Season Two when her brother compliments her “top-notch boobies.” She tailgates with the rest of her family early in Season Three, before wielding a shotgun at the behest of her brothers in “The Gang Gets Held Hostage.” She also first has sex with a member of The Gang, Dennis, during the same episode. Her next sexual conquest is Mac in Season Six’s “Who Got Dee Pregnant?” before making her final appearances in Seasons Eight and Eleven.

After the controversial and oftentimes hated "Star Wars" sequel trilogy, Rey actress Daisy Ridley has had difficulty finding box office and critical success. Dystopian thrillers were outdated by the time the overly grim "Chaos Walking" came out in 2021, the Trudy Ederle biopic "Young Woman and the Sea" was too bland, and the psychological thriller "The Marsh King's Daughter" snoozed audiences rather than intrigued them. Her quietly fragile performance in "Sometimes I Think About Dying" was exquisite, but it was such a tiny indie release and the title might be off-putting to some.
Ridley recently starred in "Cleaner," which did poorly at the box office, earning only $1 million on a $25 million budget. Although it flew under the radar, "Cleaner" deserves far more credit. It's the kind of taut, explosive action flick for grown-ups that doesn't really exist anymore because theatres are bogged down with IP-driven franchises. The plot of terrorists taking...

When Countdown returned after its three-episode premiere week, the task force made up of different law enforcement agencies suffered its first casualty with the shooting death of Department of Homeland Security Officer Damon Drew (Jonathan Togo).
As the group closed down on the sleeper cell terrorist and bomb maker Boris Volchek (Bogdan Yasinski) in the third episode of the new Prime Video series, LAPD Detective Mark Meachum (played by star Jensen Ackles) was led to the hideout where his uncle, Mikhail (Daniel Chernish), was harboring Volchek. Meachum called in reinforcements while snooping around the property and was caught by Volchek, who ordered Mikhail to take Meachum out to the back and shoot him. The rest of the unit arrived just in time, but a shootout occurred at the end of the hour and Damon was hit. Exclusive: Amazon MGM Studios’ Michael B. Jordan-directed reimagining of The Thomas Crown Affair has added a pair of Oscar winners to its team: Kenneth Branagh (Belfast), who joins in an undisclosed (we’re told villainous) role, and producer Charles Roven (Oppenheimer), who will produce the film via his Atlas Entertainment banner, alongside Jordan and Elizabeth Raposo via Outlier Society, and others.
As previously announced, Jordan and Taylor Russell lead the cast of the film, which shoots this summer and is slated for an exclusive theatrical release on March 5, 2027.
While plot details are being kept under wraps, both the original 1968 film from United Artists and the 1999 remake from MGM were heist stories revolving around a wealthy, thrill-seeking man who orchestrates a high-stakes robbery simply for the challenge, only to find himself entangled in a complex cat-and-mouse game with a brilliant investigator.

When you look in the movie dictionary under "journeyman director," you'll see a picture of Richard Donner. Okay, no such dictionary exists, but if it did, Donner would be there, and deservedly so. While the "auteur theory" gets deployed by critics (*cough* film snobs *cough*), far less attention is paid to the journeyman directors like Donner. These are filmmakers who don't see themselves as "artists" infusing their work with similar styles or themes, but as hard-working craftsmen who want to make a good movie. And when you look over Donner's 20-plus film career, and the remarkable diversity of pictures he produced, you'll see he did just that.

In the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Starship Mine", the U.S.S. Enterprise has to undergo a massive, shipwide maintenance routine that requires every single living being -- including the plants -- to be cleared off the ship. It seems that, in its many merry adventures, the Enterprise has taken on a great deal of toxic particles that need to be cleared from the ship's systems. The best way to do this is to run a slow-moving wall of concentrated baryon particles through the entire starship. The field is lethal to organic materials, so everyone has to get off the Enterprise immediately. It's the sci-fi equivalent of getting one's house tented for termites.
This leaves the Enterprise's senior staff in the care of one Commander Calvin Hutchinson (David Spielberg), who aims to pass the time with an extended reception on the planet below. A chatterbox of the highest order,...

Derek Haas will always be known for his work creating the One Chicago franchise, but the writer has a new show out that’s gaining steam. Haas is the creator of Countdown, the thriller series following a secret task force sent to investigate a dangerous murder, only to discover a sinister plot that threatens the lives of millions. The show stars Jensen Ackles, best known for his work in Supernatural and The Boys, and also other stars such as Eric Dane, Jessica Camacho, Bogdan Yasinski, and more. Collider’s Aidan Kelley caught up with Haas for a chat at the world premiere of Countdown, and he asked about the biggest differences in working on shows for streaming services like Prime Video vs. networks like ABC and CBS:
"I don't know about darker, but it's definitely a bigger scope than what I had worked with before. Scope even within episodes and with storytelling.

Exclusive: Christian Zübert, the writer and director of hit Netflix film Exterritorial couldn’t believe it when his German action thriller scaled the streamer’s film charts. “I said to my wife, I hope we don’t have a moment like La La Land in 2017 because I was thinking: ‘It’s quite unbelievable,’” he says.

By Hollywood (or, really any) standards, actor Jensen Ackles has been a busy man. He’s voiced Batman in several animated Justice League films and recently co-starred on some of the hottest TV series, including as Justin Hartley’s brother, Russell Shaw, on network’s No. 1 series Tracker and as the deadly Soldier Boy on Amazon Prime’s streaming sensation The Boys.
Yet the in-demand actor, who broke out on The CW’s fantasy drama Supernatural (2005–2020), still hadn’t found that leading role that would make him want to press pause on everything else. That is, not until Countdown came along.

Amazon MGM Studios’ United Artists and Scott Stuber are developing “The Seventh Man,” a new action-thriller that’s written by T.J. Fixman.
Stuber and Fixman previously collaborated on “Carry On,” a hostage thriller with Taron Egerton and Jason Bateman that Jaume Collet-Serra directed. The film was a hit for Netflix and currently sits in second place on the streamer’s list of most popular movies.
Stuber was in charge of Netflix’s film unit before leaving the company in 2024. He then announced he had signed a multi-year film partnership with Amazon MGM Studios under which the company agreed to finance and release movies from Stuber’s new production company under the United Artists (UA) label. The hope was to revitalize the brand, which once produced classics like “Rocky” and “Network” before it faded.
UA’s Stuber and Nick Nesbitt will produce “The Seventh Man” with Fixman serving as executive producer.

Over a decade since its release, Injustice: Gods Among Us is still one of the better and more beloved superhero fighting games of its era. But in case you haven’t played the game before, did you know that NetherRealm Studios added a cheeky little Die Hard reference in the game?
Well, we say cheeky, it’s actually very obvious because Lex Luthor looks exactly like Bruce Willis’ John McClane. From his chiseled face to the unmistakably bald head, Luthor’s design in Injustice does make us wonder how the bald actor would’ve done if he played the DC villain on the big screen.

A third photo showed Bruce smiling alongside Acee, who had his arm around the Die Hard star. Bruce was diagnosed with aphasia in 2022 and retired from acting. There are lots of great movies out there, but only a few can claim to have created their own genre. John McTiernan’s action classic “Die Hard” is one of them. Sure, it didn’t come from out of nowhere — the premise of villains taking hostages, and a hero taking them down from within dates back at least as far as the Oscar-winning John Huston thriller “Key Largo,” starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall — but it put all the pieces together in one lucrative, easy to copy framework. And boy, did Hollywood copy it. Over and over and over again.
Yes, in the wake of “Die Hard” there have been borderline countless riffs on the same basic premise: Bad guys take over a thingy, a good guy just happens to be at the thingy, the good guy foils all the bad guys’ plans. Just change the thingy, and/or change the heroes/villains,...

Rebel Wilson, who we all know for her bold comedy, has turned into an action heroine in Bride Hard. The movie is directed by Con Air and Lara Croft: Tom Raider’s creative Simon West, so the expectations were quite high. People were looking forward to watching this no-nonsense story with a lot of action.
The feature also stars Anna Camp, Anna Chlumsky, Stephen Dorff, and Justin Hartley. Bride Hard has crashed into theaters with a premise that’s essentially Die Hard with a wedding backdrop. But does Rebel Wilson save the day in Bruce Willis fashion? Let’s break it down!

Jensen Ackles has made a name for himself as a massive television star. He gained recognition on the Jessica Alba cult-classic Dark Angel and in Smallville season 4 as a series regular. However, Ackles' most prominent role was as Dean Winchester on the series Supernatural for a staggering 15 seasons, running from 2005-2020. He would reprise his role as Dean on the short-lived The Winchesters where he also served as an executive producer.
Ackles has remained a mainstay on television, appearing in The Boys and its spinoff Gen V as Soldier Boy. He will return in The Boys season 5, where he will be reunited with his Supernatural co-star Jared Padalecki. Coming to Prime Video on June 25, Ackles is starring in a new thriller series that he compares to one of the greatest action movies of all time.

With the likes of Disney’s 2025 Lilo & Stitch and DreamWorks’ How to Train Your Dragon remake in theaters, the task of having to tackle the current US box office is no mean feat. With that in mind, positive early responses become crucial as word-of-mouth helps to boost ticket sales. Sadly, one of this weekend's box office debutants has had anything but a positive early response, with Rebel Wilson's Bride Hard failing to capture any glowing first reviews.
Because of this, Bride Hard, which was promoted by some as Bridesmaids meets Die Hard, falls far below the bar set by either, earning a poor 27% critics' score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. Although only from 15 reviews to date, this score is likely to stay at a similar level as more are left disappointed by a lackluster comedy with a healthy measure of action. Not even a Pitch Perfectreunionwithco-star Anna Camp could seemingly save this movie,...
