On July 3, 2008, the Vatican announced that Fr. Damien would be named a saint, with enough miracles being attributed to his intercession.
Filming of this TV movie began with David Janssen in the title role, but after only a couple of days work, the actor suffered a fatal heart attack. The footage was scrapped, the part was recast, and shooting started over with Ken Howard.
