In the early 1980s, Israeli cousins and co-producers Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus – the men behind then-thriving outfit The Cannon Group – decided that they would like to add an old-fashioned style horror film to their burgeoning library of titles. They approached director Peter Walker, renowned for a slew of successful exploitation pictures throughout the 1970s, suggesting he create something for the likes of Bela Lugosi, Peter Lorre and Boris Karloff, blissfully unaware the three actors were dead. Regardless, Walker took the baton and ran with it, the result being 1983’s rather splendid House of the Long Shadows.

Probably best remembered for assembling icons of horror cinema Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Vincent Price and John Carradine under one roof, House of the Long Shadows didn’t wow critics at the time and with hindsight it’s easy to see why. Times...

Before the influential Kolchak: The Night Stalker series aired on ABC in the mid-’70s, Darren McGavin brought the titular investigative reporter to life for the first time in the 1972 TV movie The Night Stalker, which is getting a 4K restoration Blu-ray release from Kino Lorber this October, along with its 1973 sequel, The Night Strangler.

Announced on Facebook and Twitter, The Night Stalker and The Night Strangler Blu-rays will be released on October 2nd in the Us. Each release will come with a new 4K restoration, a new audio commentary with film historian Tim Lucas, and other new special features.

Well, I hope you guys have been saving your pennies, because there are a lot of great horror and sci-fi titles coming home on March 14th. Scream Factory is giving Firestarter the Collector’s Edition treatment this week, and both Drive-In Massacre and The Skull are being resurrected in HD as well.

If you missed them during their theatrical runs late last year, both The Love Witch and Paul Verhoeven’s award-winning thriller Elle are getting Blu-ray / DVD releases this Tuesday, and Demon Seed is making its way to Blu-ray as well (which I highly recommend watching if you haven't).

Before David Bowie became a massive international rock icon, he logged his first movie role in Michael Armstrong's The Image, an obscure, black-and-white short horror film that has just been officially released for the first time online by the Wall Street Journal. Directed by Michael Armstrong, who could go on to helm such cult horror movies as Mark of the Devil and House of the Long Shadows, the film stars then-unknown actor Michael Byrne as an artist whose painting of a young man seemingly comes to life. Bowie was just 20 years old when the film was released and is magnetic as the elegant ghoul who torments his creator. “It got an X-certificate. I think it was the first short that got an X-certificate. For its violence, which in itself was extraordinary,” Armstong told the Wall Street Journal, which was given permission to post the film in its entirety by the David Bowie Archive.

Vincent Price is among my very favorite actors. His incredible charm on screen, even in the most hideous of performances, is undeniable and rarely lets me down. This time around I'm taking a brief look at two of the more recent Vincent Price films to hit Blu-ray, courtesy of Kino Lorber Studio Classics, Aip's The Oblong Box and The Cannon Group's House of the Long Shadows. One of my favorite films of all time, Ernest Dickerson’s Tales from the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight, is finally making its way to HD via a Collector’s Edition Blu-ray from Scream Factory. And as if that’s not enough, Scream is also busy with two more great releases this Tuesday as well—Bordello of Blood and The Larry Fessenden Collection.

When it comes to British horror films, you’ve hopefully already seen the likes of 28 Days Later, The Descent and Mum & Dad. Maybe you’ve watched The Zombie Diaries, Eden Lake and Panic Button (if you haven’t, you should address that immediately).

As anyone of a certain vintage will inform you, Britain has a rich horror heritage, and there’s much more to the genre than Dracula and Frankenstein. There’s Witchfinder General, with Vincent Price as Matthew Hopkins, a real-life prosecutor of witches, plus The Blood On Satan’s Claw, about 17th Century devil worshippers. And that’s just for starters.

Even if we eschewed Hammer and restricted ourselves to the “old school” horror actors (Price, Christopher Lee, Donald Pleasance), the list would include Madhouse, Death Line, Theatre Of Blood and House Of The Long Shadows, among others. Again, not too shabby.

I like to think of “House of the Long Shadows” as kind of the super group of horror films. What I mean is that typically that term is reserved for the music field for example, Damn Yankees, Asia, Velvet Revolver, Audioslave. Hopefully, you get the point. It’s professionals who have already made their own fame and fortune alone or with another group, but band together for a second helping of notoriety. I don’t know if anyone in this film...

As the undisputed king of American gothic, Vincent Price holds a unique position regarding his association with British horror. From the mid sixties, nearly all his films were made in the UK, and while not as distinguished as The House of Usher (1960), Tales of Terror (1962) and The Raven (1963), they are not without interest. As an actor perfectly suited to English gothic, Price’s output includes two career-defining performances. In a nutshell, he had the best of both worlds.

Masque of the Red Death (1964)

The British phase of his career began with a bang. After directing all of Price’s Poe chillers for American International Pictures, Roger Corman wanted to give the formula a fresh approach by making his next film in England. Aip’s Samuel Z Arkoff and James H Nicholson had already produced several European films, so the next step was to establish a London base with Louis M Heyward in charge.

If there’s one thing you can say about the Frightfest Halloween All-Nighter it’s that the one-night only event has provided some of the most diverse horror line-ups to be screened theatrically in its meagre seven year existence – and 2013′s line-up is no different, with screenings of the eagerly awaited remake of Aussie horror Patrick, from director Mark Hartley (Not Quite Hollywood, Machete Maidens Unleashed); Soulmate, from actress turned director Axelle Carolyn (Centurion); and the first film from former Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash’s new production outfit Slasher Films, Nothing Left To Fear. British actor Richard Todd was noted for his roles in several Walt Disney adventure films in the early 1950s, starring in 1952’s The Story of Robin Hood and His Merrie Men, The Sword and the Rose (1953), and Rob Roy, the Highland Rogue (1953).

He was born Richard Palethorpe-Todd in Dublin, Ireland, on June 11, 1919. He trained as an actor and began his career on stage in 1936. He appeared in small roles in several films later in the decade before the outbreak of World War II. Todd served in the British Army during the war. He rose to the rank of Captain by 1944 and participated in the D-Day landings with the British 6th Airborne Division. He returned to the stage and screen after the war.

He earned an Academy Award nomination for his role in the 1949 film The Hasty Heart, and starred in Alfred Hitchcock’s Stage Fright (1950) with Jane Wyman and Marlene Dietrich.
