“I’m a huge believer in the expression, ‘laughter is the shortest distance between two people,'” declares “Will and Harper” director Josh Greenbaum. For our recent webchat he adds, “I love comedy. I love making people laugh. I felt that was really critical, because that’s really the love language between Will and Harper. They met on both of their first days at ‘Saturday Night Live,’ and they shared an immediate kind of love language in comedy. For me, finding that tone and capturing that tone of their friendship, and what their friendship looks like, both prior to Harper’s transition and then post, was what I was most interested in capturing. Obviously, the other question we ask in the film is what Harper asks, which is that she loves America, she loves this country, but she wasn’t sure, and she’s not sure, if it loves her back since her transition.

It’s beginning to look a lot like homicide — I mean, Christmas on Elsbeth. This holiday season, snow won’t be the only thing falling around here. Get your ugly Christmas sweater on because it’s a special Elsbeth holiday episode.
You may have to watch the promo for “Gold, Frankincense, and Murder” to understand the reference above. Don’t worry because we are going to unpack what could be the campiest episode of the season.
That being said, Elsbeth has enough quirkiness for two shows. Couple that with some holiday cheer, and you have some certified yuletide mayhem.
(Michael Parmelee/CBS)
It may be the happiest time of the year, but let’s not forget the crowds, alcohol consumption, desperation, gift-giving pressure, emotional instability, and homes left vacant.
This is a tough time of year for many people, and someone always snaps. So, let’s all be thankful for...

When director Jason Reitman and casting director John Papsidera put together the large ensemble cast for “Saturday Night,” Reitman’s film about the first-ever episode of the legendary sketch comedy series “Saturday Night Live,” they ran into one spot of trouble. “Dan Aykroyd was almost impossible,” Reitman told Entertainment Weekly of the casting process.
But when Dylan O’Brien auditioned, the part just clicked into place. “That was a big moment,” the filmmaker said, noting that O’Brien was the last of seven actors cast to play the Not Ready for Primetime Players from that first season of “Saturday Night Live.”

O’Brien didn’t know any of this at the time. As far as he was concerned, “Saturday Night” seemed like a project he wouldn’t book anyway, and so the “Teen Wolf” and “The Maze Runner” actor didn’t even bother to send in...

Jolly old elf Martin Short is making it official — by joining Saturday Night Live’s Five-Timers Club on December 21, he’s also cementing his status as the show’s all-time Christmas Guy. Along with the season’s opener and final show, the holiday episode is generally reserved for SNL all-stars. This is Short’s second shot at the Christmas show, following his first in 2012, but he also co-hosted the December 10 episode in 2022 with Steve Martin. That show was packed with holiday sketches, including a twisted take on A Christmas Carol.
Only three other people have hosted as many as two Christmas episodes, according to Late Nighter. First was Candice Bergen in 1975 and 1976, the show’s first two seasons. The man who ruined Christmas, Jimmy Fallon, hit the holiday double in 2011 and 2013. From the moment John Belushi first muttered about The Wolverines, “Saturday Night Live” had been a launching pad for America’s burgeoning comedic talent to break away towards their own careers beyond the show. Some have proven more successful in that area than others, but most of that intermittent success has been focused on the same brand of comedic acting that got them noticed in the first place; few SNL alum mark their break from Lorne Michaels with a stint in the director’s chair.
Kyle Mooney, though, seems relatively primed to have made the jump from the live show to being the man behind the camera, as most eyes were moved in his direction by way of his prerecorded, often-cut-for-time skits. Now, two years after his SNL departure, the man whose cringe-comedy made him a defining middle-ground between Andy Samberg and Tim Robinson turns his gift for the awkward towards “Y2K,...

Is there really such a thing as a perfect work of art? If you subscribe to the notion that everything man-made is inherently flawed in some aspect, then no -- though you've quite the uphill climb if you're looking to find fault with Leonardo da Vinci's "Mona Lisa," William Shakespeare's "Hamlet," or Prince's "Little Red Corvette."
But perfection isn't strictly a judgment of nuts-and-bolts craftsmanship. It's a spiritual thing. And some works of art just feel flawless. This is particularly true of movies. Unless you're the kind of dullard who walks into a movie looking for continuity errors as stinging evidence of artistic shortcoming, you know that a movie that stirs you to the core of your being is a kind of ineffable achievement. It is perfect in every way to you, and that's all that matters.

Adam Sandler’s “The Chanukah Song” transcends classic SNL bit and now qualifies as a legitimate holiday classic — as much a post-Thanksgiving staple as “Jingle Bells” or “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town.”
Debuting on SNL on December 3, 1994, “The Chanukah Song” has changed a bit over the last three decades — with the names of new Jewish celebrities being swapped in and out — but it’s never stopped being a banger (Chanukah or otherwise). Sandler wrote the original with SNL writers Ian Maxtone-Graham and Lew Morton, the latter of whom recently spoke to me about coming up with the biggest Chanukah hit since “I Have a Little Dreidel.”
When did you join Saturday Night Live as a writer?
In the fall of 1993. Sandler had been there for a while already, but I’d only worked with him a little bit before “The Chanukah Song.” He would do these holiday songs that...

Assuming you haven’t bought tickets to the symphony lately, your only exposure to classical music has been hearing it as the score playing in the background of movies. In that sense, musically, that stupid superhero movie you watched might just be the highest form of art you’ve experienced all year.
Those movies are going to be the absolute pinnacle of any composer’s career. Before that, they’ll be doing even sillier stuff, and that goes equally for the most famous composers of all.
6 John Williams Did the Original Theme Song to ‘Gilligan’s Island’
In the 20 years after 1976, four new movies broke the record for highest-grossing movie of all-time: Jaws, Star Wars, E.T. and Jurassic Park. All four of them were scored by John Williams. But a decade before the earliest of those four, Williams was enlisted to write the theme song to a TV show — a new series called Gilligan’s Island.

There are actors who define a period of time in the eyes of audiences, who star in groundbreaking, hugely influential projects that are beloved years after they are released, and whose screen presence makes them unforgettable.
One of those actors is Rick Moranis. For many '80s and '90s kids, Moranis was a face greatly familiar to them, a source of comfort in family friendly movies like "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids" or their guide into the world of more risqué movies with adult themes and humor like "Little Shop of Horrors" and "Spaceballs." It didn't matter the tone or the genre, Moranis was consistently funny, endearing, and charming -- whether as an innocent floral shop worker who discovers a talking, singing carnivorous plant, or a Darth Vader spoof with plans for world domination (and a penchant for silly ties).

As Saturday Night Live marks its milestone 50th season, Will Ferrell is sharing fond memories of his tenure on the NBC sketch comedy show.
The 6x Emmy winner looked back on his “wonderful seven seasons on that show, where I made lifelong friends” as he recently reflected on his time with the cast of Lorne Michaels‘ show from 1995 to 2002.

In taking on the role of Gilda Radner in Jason Reitman’s film Saturday Night, British actress Ella Hunt was stepping into the shoes of a beloved U.S. treasure and a Saturday Night Live-verse she herself had not grown up with. In Saturday Night, Reitman details the hours approaching the very first broadcast of SNL—resulting in a fast-paced, comedic romp in which chaos reigns. For Hunt, it was not only a case of working through the character development with no long-held cultural connection to Radner, but also of honoring her in a way that resonated with all the SNL viewers who’ve loved her for so long.
Deadline: As a Brit, what was your feeling going into the role of Gilda Radner?
Ella Hunt: Honestly, for me, approaching this movie or when I got sent the audition, part of my initial hesitancy was, I can’t...

"My Cousin Vinny," the 1992 comedy courtroom film, is great for a lot of reasons, Marisa Tomei chief among them. Tomei's character, Vinny Gambini's (Joe Pesci) foul-mouthed but very supportive fiancée Mona Lisa Vito, comes in clutch in the film's final act, providing the expert testimony required to exonerate the wrongfully-arrested defendants. Even critics who didn't love the film, like Roger Ebert, were happy to praise Tomei's performance. "Tomei's surprise appearance as an expert witness is a high point, and left me feeling I would like to see this couple again," Ebert wrote in his review, "Maybe in a screenplay that was more focused."
Despite this, when Tomei won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her performance in the film, she had her fair share of haters. Because she was the least established actor nominated that year, and because Vanessa Redgrave was considered the favorite for her performance in "Howard's End,...

Jason Sudeikis is often recognized for his acting and comedic career which kicked off as a writer of SNL (Saturday Night Live) in 2003. Soon after that, he worked hard to create a portfolio that now carries some big titles under his name. JoJo Siwa can take a joke when it comes to her style, but don’t knock her moves.
After Chloe Fineman reprised her impersonation of the ‘Karma’ artist on Saturday Night Live this month, Siwa said the comedian “nails it every time” with her impersonation on the NBC sketch comedy show, but she had one tip.
“I think she needs to be a little more full out in the dance, but other than that, everything was perfect,” Siwa told People of Fineman’s impression on the Nov. 14 episode, in which she auditioned for Wicked as the Dance Moms alum.
She admitted she hasn’t personally complimented Fineman on the performance, “but I do need to reach out and tell her that I’m honored again.”
Siwa unveiled her new look earlier this year on the music video for her single ‘Karma’ in April, donning a Kiss-esque black jeweled bodysuit with matching heavy metal makeup.

Chappell Roan fever is still going round, and Franz Ferdinand is feeling the heat. On Wednesday, the band covered Roan’s smash hit, “Good Luck, Babe!”
The cover came as part of their performance on a Sofa Session with Jo Whiley for BBC Radio 2. Splitting up Roan’s vocals into a multi-part, call-and-response arrangement, the band brought their alt rock sensibilities to the song, illustrating the versatility of its writing.

Speaking about it, frontman Alex Kapranos said, “It’s just an amazing song by an incredible artist. It’s funny, you get some artists that have a moment, often it’s kind of divisive. Saturday Night Live’s upcoming 50th anniversary special will no doubt bring back a number of past characters, as long as they weren’t played by Joe Piscopo or Jim Breuer, we assume. The show doesn’t air until February, but SNL’s nostalgia-fest has already begun. Yes, two beloved cast members just revived two beloved SNL characters — but it was all in the service of promoting a credit card company.

In Jason Reitman’s “Saturday Night,” we meet the original Not Ready for Prime Time Players mere minutes before they revolutionize comedy — and television itself — with their live, late-night NBC variety show dreamed up by an inscrutable Canadian named Lorne Michaels. Buzzing with nervous energy, the film tick-tocks through the chaotic final 90 minutes before the first episode of “Saturday Night Live” (which at that point didn’t have the “Live” in its title) hits the air on October 11, 1975.

"Seinfeld" and "Curb Your Enthusiasm" creator Larry David has been upfront about how much of his writing is inspired by his life. For instance, when he was working at "Saturday Night Live," David once angrily quit the show, only to show up the next day and keep working as if nothing happened. George Costanza (Jason Alexander), who was Larry's stand-in character on "Seinfeld," did the same thing years later.
When it came to inventing Kramer (Michael Richards), Jerry's zany, intrusive next-door neighbor, Larry once again turned to real life for inspiration. "The character of Kramer was based on my real next-door neighbor, Kenny Kramer," David once explained in a featurette about the making of the series. "My neighbor was a guy who would come in, take a lot of my food, and he was a guy who didn't work, really, or if he did nobody really knew what he did.

Thanksgiving is a time to take stock of what we have around us, give thanks, and also look to what's ahead. And when it comes to late-night TV, there's a lot to be thankful for.
Most late-night TV hosts probably weren't saying "thank you" after the election earlier this month. But that doesn't mean they're any less committed. In fact, some like Seth Meyers have said "let's f***ing go" to what's ahead.
And for late-night TV fans, there is a lot to look forward to in the coming months as the calendar flips to 2025. So this Thanksgiving, let's be thankful for the bounty of laughs late-night TV is ready to serve.

Scarlett Johansson is still not fully on board with her husband Colin Jost’s boat. That’s probably because the boat in question is a decommissioned Staten Island ferry he purchased with former “Saturday Night Live” co-worker Pete Davidson.
“He’s a kind person and he’s hilarious and thoughtful and loving, and he’s a great dad and I love him. I feel very, very lucky. But also he’s got his naughty side,” the Marvel star revealed on “Live With Kelly and Mark.” That “naughty side” is represented by Jost’s purchase on the John F. Kennedy ferry, which he bought in 2022 through an online public auction.
“It is, yep, still decommissioned. I was like, ‘Ok, what’s happening with this boat?’ You’ve got to start paying for its own docking fees at least, right?'” Johansson said.

Legendary film critics Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert were known for their passionate discussions about movies, whether they were raving about arthouse offerings like My Dinner with Andre or fiercely debating the artistic merits of Home Alone 3.
But what about TV?
Well, apart from that time that they reviewed an episode of Saturday Night Live during the episode, the famous duo didn’t really discuss TV shows. But that all changed thanks to one very special animated series: The Critic. Al Jean and Mike Reiss’ underrated primetime cartoon chronicled the life of a portly New York film critic and TV host Jay Sherman (voiced by Jon Lovitz) who routinely trashed Hollywood blockbusters such as Scent of a Wolfman and Dennis the Menace II Society.
So, naturally, Siskel and Ebert took note of The Critic. They then took the highly unusual step of reviewing it on a 1994 episode of their show,...

Saturday Night Live has churned out a lot of extraneous merchandise over the years — from T-shirts, to board games, to the Marvel comic book in which Spider-Man teams up with John Belushi to stop a magical Samurai from killing Lorne Michaels and destroying 30 Rock.

With the show celebrating its 50th season, we’re getting even more SNL-branded crap this year, including socks, ornaments and, of course, life-sized cardboard cutouts of the A Night at the Roxbury guys — perfect for putting up in your home to ward off any potential romantic partners.

Now, it turns out that we’re also getting a Saturday Night Live-themed children’s book, which is good news for parents who are sick and tired of how Goodnight Moon doesn’t contain a single character played by Peter Davidson.
Specifically, it’s part of the Little Golden Book series, and will...

Andy Samberg almost had a wardrobe malfunction while filming a music video for Saturday Night Live with Charli Xcx.
The Brooklyn Nine-Nine alum recently revealed on The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast what it was like filming the “Here I Go” sketch with the pop star while wearing super short shorts.
“There was a lot of debate about how high my shorts should be,” Samberg explained. “And I kept being like, ‘Well Charli’s are gonna be pretty high because that’s how she rolls, so I should really have mine high.'”
While Samberg considered wearing the “exact same outfit” as Charli for a moment, which featured short red shorts and a bikini top, he quickly realized that might not go over well.
“I was like, well no, I don’t think anybody actually wants to see that, despite what they might think,” he joked, before admitting that...

Saturday Night Live gave Blue Öyster Cult’s following a fever.
On April 8, 2000, SNL aired a sketch written by and starring Will Ferrell that would change the course of music history forever — or, at least, it would change the way everyone in the crowd treated Blue Öyster Cult during their tours. With Ferrell, Jimmy Fallon, Chris Kattan, Chris Parnell and Horatio Sanz all playing the psychedelic rock band from Stony Brook, New York and guest host Christopher Walken in the role of a producer who is passionate about a certain percussion part, “More Cowbell” was an immediate hit, and, in the nearly quarter-century since its airing, the sketch has become one of the most over-quoted SNL skits in the show’s long history.
Blue Öyster Cult co-founder Donald “Buck Dharma” Roeser recently spoke to Vulture about the band’s relationship with the sketch, and he revealed that, before “More Cowbell,...

Norm Macdonald’s first encounter with one of his comedy idols, Rodney Dangerfield, couldn’t have gone worse, Macdonald told Howard Stern in 2011. In fact, he said, “I made the worst mistake ever.”
Macdonald was working at a casino and entered an elevator when he spotted the icon. “I’m like, Oh my God, it’s Rodney! I got to say something to him.” Macdonald remembered that he’d worked on a project with a director who’d also worked with Rodney, so he used that common ground to introduce himself.
“Hey Rodney, we have a common friend.”
“Who’s that?”
“Paul Johnson.”
Wrong answer. “He goes, ‘That cocksucker! That fucker’s no friend of mine!’” Mind you, this was on an elevator full of people, Macdonald told Stern. “You tell him he can suck my dick!”
“I’m not his friend! I’m not his friend!” Macdonald insisted.
