Jack Nicholson had an undeniably impressive film career. From the outside looking in at least, he seemed to be riding high from his breakout role in 1969's "Easy Rider" all the way to 2007's "The Bucket List," before gracefully retiring from Hollywood in recent years. But although Nicholson would still be landing great roles deep into the 2000s, he was already starting to feel too old in 1986. In an '86 interview with the New York Times, Nicholson talked about how he watched "Ferris Bueller's Day Off." Although this is arguably director John Hughes' best movie, Nicholson hated every moment of it.
"That movie made me feel totally irrelevant to anything that any audience could want, and 119 years old" Nicholson explained. ''Believe me, everyone else watching it liked it. And you know, I literally walked out of there thinking my days are numbered. These people are trying to kill me."

Jack Nicholson is singular for many reasons, but one of his most fascinating attributes is that he was commercially bulletproof. Don't get me wrong, Nicholson made a flop here and there, but there was never a sense with the star that he needed a hit. Even when he was slumping, everyone figured Nicholson would get it straightened out one way or another. He was just too damn appealing to not score a hit once every few years.
If Nicholson was ever kinda-sorta in trouble, it was probably in 1977. Yes, he was only two years removed from winning Best Actor Oscar for "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" (which was an incredibly competitive year), but he was more immediately on the hook for two box office bombs in Arthur Penn's "The Missouri Breaks" (a pricey Western that paired him with...

Jack Nicholson was the epitome of the New Hollywood movie star. He broke through via the cultural earthquake that was "Easy Rider," and quickly established himself as a guarantor of quality filmmaking thanks to his star turns in "Five Easy Pieces," "Carnal Knowledge" and "The Last Detail." As the revolutionary spirit of the New Hollywood movement faded, Nicholson found himself becoming more of a traditional leading man in more traditional films like "The Postman Always Rings Twice," "Terms of Endearment" and "Prizzi's Honor." He worked in spurts, taking breaks here and there, but he was never gone for long — which is why his 14-year absence from our screens (save for the occasional Los Angeles Lakers game appearance) feels so notable. And sad.
While we let Nicholson enjoy his retirement, we've no shortage of classics, near-classics, and assorted oddities to remind us how great he could be when he was at...

It’s one thing to walk into an air-conditioned studio and say that you would never do something. It’s quite another to never take desperate measures when you and your family’s lives are on the line. That ethical thorniness is what initially drew Colman Domingo to “The Madness,” Netflix’s latest conspiracy thriller from playwright Stephen Belber.
“Especially after the past few weeks, I think we’re all trying to lick our wounds and try to figure out who are we as a country? What do we believe in? Where’s our information coming from? How are we distilling it down?” Domingo told TheWrap. “We have to think differently in some ways and open ourselves up to have uncomfortable conversations, real conversations, not just your opinion.
“That’s what I actually liked about Muncie,” he added of his “Madness” character. “He does believe that you can sit at a table from opposite ends,...

Taika Waititi has brought various projects to the screen over his career. From mockumentaries like What We Do In The Shadows to superhero epics like Thor: Ragnarok to his Oscar-winning film about Hitler as a boy’s imaginary friend in Jojo Rabbit, Waititi has covered the gamut in genres, tones, and creativity. His latest project is the adaptation of the National Book Award-winning novel Interior Chinatown by Charles Yu. With Yu on board to adapt his novel, a book that seemed impossible to translate to the screen has become a ten-episode series unlike any show I have seen before.
Interior Chinatown follows Willis Wu, played by Jimmy O. Yang, a waiter in a Chinese restaurant who wants more out of life than being a supporting player in his own story. When he witnesses a kidnapping, Willis is recruited by Detective Lana Lee (Chloe Bennet) to help solve the case and...

If you haven’t watched Interior Chinatown‘s 10 episodes on Hulu yet, you’re missing out on one of the year’s weirdest, wildest rides. Based on the National Book Award-winning novel from Charles Yu (the former writer for HBO’s Westworld also serves as this series’ showrunner), the meta romp follows Willis Wu (Jimmy O. Yang), a bored waiter at his uncle Wong’s (Archie Kao) Chinatown restaurant. Willis is also unknowingly (at first) a background character in cop procedural Black & White (a spoof on Law & Order and the like). With dreams of being a kung fu hero, Willis works his way from a background character into a lead, all while solving a years-in-the-making Chinatown-centric case under the guidance of glamorous transfer Detective Lana Lee. And it’s all seemingly connected to his long-missing older brother (played by Chris Pang). The story gets even weirder ...

The Artful Dodger has been renewed for Season 2, it was announced on Wednesday morning — almost exactly one year after Season 1 of the Aussie crime dramedy dropped on Disney+ and Hulu.

I didn’t really know what to expect from Interior Chinatown going in. I have not read the original novel by Charles Yu, who also serves as showrunner and executive producer for this adaptation; nor was I familiar with anything this cast had done, save for Chloe Bennet’s work on Agents of Shield.
But Taika Waititi’s involvement quickly caught my eye and the hook of an average guy roped into a massive conspiracy felt very strong to me, so I was more than willing to give it a chance. And I am very glad I did because Interior Chinatown is one of the most refreshing takes on the often played-out detective genre that I’ve seen in years. Though bear in mind that this only applies to the first five episodes, as that was what was made available to me at time of writing.
What is Interior Chinatown about?...

A strange irony lies at the heart of Hulu’s Interior Chinatown. Its protagonist is Willis Wu (Jimmy O. Yang), an unassuming waiter who’s always dreamt of being the hero but despairs of forever being relegated to, as he sighs, “a background character in someone else’s story.” Ostensibly, this very show represents his chance to change that — to take control of his own narrative, to seize his own destiny, to carve out his own role in a world all too eager to shove him into a series of stereotypical boxes.
But the only way that Interior Chinatown can apparently think to achieve that is by shoving him into yet another box, this time as an avatar for someone else’s cultural analysis. It’s a bigger box, to be sure, with more room for experimentation and cheeky self-awareness. But it’s a box all the same, prioritizing the...

In the week leading up to the most divisive, high-stakes and exhausting presidential election in modern American history, Ronny Chieng spent three nights manning the Daily Show anchor desk. As a politics buff and a longtime correspondent of the Comedy Central institution, he’s more than game to guest host. But he’s also aware of how much the work had changed since Trevor Noah tapped him for the gig back in 2015. “I’ve been there long enough where I get the rhythm of it,” says the Malaysian stand-up and actor. “But it’s become a bit like the emergency room, watching car-wreck victims come in every day. You just get desensitized.”
Fortunately for the 38-year-old, it’s not all comedy triage. The show keeps him on a long leash, allowing frequent breaks to tour (his latest stand-up special, Love to Hate It, hits Netflix on Dec. 17) and tackle a...

Most people think of retirement as one of life's rites of passage, something akin to graduating from school or getting a promotion at a job. While some people have careers that treat retirement in this manner, there are many others for whom retirement is more of a state of mind than anything else. This is certainly true of an artist; some never seem to want to stop or slow down (may I remind you that The Rolling Stones just finished their latest tour this past July), while others feel that they don't wish to wear out their welcome. Then there are other factors, such as changing cultural norms as well as the waxing and waning of opportunities as they dwindle with age. Of course, age itself can be a factor; bodies do inexorably decline, after all.

Paul Newman had no desire to play paddy-cake for “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?.”
According to director Robert Zemeckis, the actor was approached to lead the cartoon live-action hybrid Disney film. The 1988 feature was a cartoon-ified take on the noir genre and centered on private detective Eddie Valiant, who was later played by Bob Hoskins. The film went on to win three Oscars for film editing, sound effects editing, and visual effects. Animator Richard Williams also received a Special Achievement Award from the Academy in 1989 for his animation direction.
Zemeckis said during Josh Horowitz’s “Happy Sad Confused” podcast that Newman was less than enthused to be considered for the lead role.
“I actually offered the Bob Hoskins role to Paul Newman and he was insulted,” Zemeckis said. “He said, ‘What? You want me to do a movie where I’m playing against a cartoon rabbit?’ He didn’t like it at all.

Jimmy O. Yang doesn’t code for Erlich Bachman no more.
On Tuesday, Hulu released the trailer for “Interior Chinatown,” its wild action-comedy series based on Charles Yu’s book of the same name. Yang, who plays a mild-mannered waiter, is about to get way in over his head.
But first, he exists in total mundanity.
“In Chinatown, nothing ever changes,” Willis Wu (Yang) says to open the trailer. “Nothing exciting ever happens to me or you or anyone we know.”
“I feel like I’m a background character in someone else’s story,” Wu continues.
Well, he’s definitely — and precisely — right about that last part.

This article contains spoilers for the latest episode of "The Penguin."
While I can't help but think of "The Batman" as "Seven" but not quite as good, there was still a lot to love about the film. Director Matt Reeves tried several new things with his take on the Dark Knight, turning Bruce Wayne from a millionaire playboy into a tortured shut-in inspired by late-career Kurt Cobain. While Reeves touted classic crime thrillers such as "Chinatown" as his inspiration, "The Batman" was also clearly working from a David Fincher rubric, with the aforementioned "Seven" providing the most obvious influence alongside "Zodiac," which partly inspired the look of Paul Dano's Riddler.
Elsewhere, one of the coolest changes Reeves made to Batman lore was the Bat-cave itself. In "The Batman," Robert Pattinson's vigilante works out of an abandoned train station beneath Wayne Tower in the center of the city. Such...

We’ve seen this smile before … sort of.
While on the red carpet for the forthcoming Smile 2, the follow-up to the Sosie Bacon-led horror film about a grinning harbinger of death, star Ray Nicholson was asked about his approach to the genre and how fans have likened the smile on his character’s poster to that of his father Jack Nicholson’s deranged smirk for the seminal Stanley Kubrick film The Shining.
“We’re very different people,” the actor told Deadline at the premiere. “I was born in 1992, he was born in 1937. The things that affect me don’t necessarily affect him. Obviously, I love him. He’s my inspiration. I ate dinner with him every night. I studied it, that’s how I learned to be a human being. So, of course we’re gonna be kind of similar.”

Prime Video’s “Killer Heat” is a new mystery thriller starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Nick Bali, a private investigator. It shows Nick traveling to Greece to investigate the shocking death of a wealthy man named Leo Vardakis. Nick is hired by Penelope, Leo’s identical twin brother’s wife. The film takes place entirely on a scenic island and relies on the moodiness of the setting as it unravels new bits of information. It seems heavily inspired by the Hollywood noir classics that redefined the genre conventions decades ago. Fans of Joseph Gordon-Levitt and movies like “Killer Heat,” featuring slow-burn mysteries, can check out this thriller on Prime Video.

Roman Polanski's 1974 neo-noir "Chinatown" is so good that many lump it together with the great first-wave noir films of the 1940s. Polanski presented it as a throwback genre, but included all the modern style -- and in-vogue cynicism -- that the 1970s had to offer. Unusual for the genre, "Chinatown" also delved into the rather boring world of Los Angeles utility politics, and how merely diverting the water supply from one part of the city to another can reveal a web of corruption, murder, and sexual abuse.
Jack Nicholson plays Jake Gittes, a too-smart-for-all-this private investigator who tends to make a living catching cheating spouses. Jake is confronted by a socialite named Evelyn Mulwray (Faye Dunaway), who points out that his tailing of her husband Hollis led to his death. Jo Nesbø adaptation Killer Heat is the latest in a long line of detective films, from Chinatown and The Long Goodbye to the Knives Out series
The private detective film will always be the slinkiest and sexiest of thriller subgenres – minus the strictures and/or corruption of police procedure, crime-solving can feel as alluringly shadowy and illicit as the crime itself. Relatively few of us have ever encountered, let alone hired, a private eye; far more of us, I’d wager, have at some point entertained the fantasy that we’d be quite good at the job ourselves.
Newly out on Amazon Prime, Philippe Lacôte’s Killer Heat isn’t exactly a classic entry in the Pi canon. Based on a Jo Nesbø short story and starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a moody detective investigating a sordid love triangle involving twin brothers (Richard Madden and Richard Madden) against attractive Greek island scenery,...

“Megalopolis” is now playing in theaters, and director Francis Ford Coppola is in the Oscar hunt yet again after already winning multiple Academy Awards throughout his esteemed career. Let’s look back at his many Oscar races.
After building his credits as a screenwriter and director in the 1960s, Coppola’s breakthroughs arrived in the early 1970s with “Patton” and “The Godfather.” He wrote the screenplay to the beloved epic drama “Patton,” directed Franklin J. Schaffner and starring George C. Scott, both of whom won Oscars for the film. Coppola also received his first Academy Award for his original screenplay, which he shared with co-writer Edmund H. North. His only threat in the category that year was “Five Easy Pieces,” which got into Best Picture, but with “Patton” dominating in a bunch of categories that year, winning the Screenplay prize was all but inevitable.

A rumor had been going around that Alfred Hitchcock’s Rope was being developed into a remake. And World of Reel is now confirming that the project is indeed happening and the film may be securing David Fincher to direct. Fincher was recently trying to develop a remake of another Alfred Hitchcock classic, Strangers on a Train, which was said to be eyeing Brad Pitt and Ben Affleck to star. However, now it seems as though Fincher is instead opting to remake Rope as, according to Netflix’s Kasey Moore, the film is moving forward. Denzel Washington and/or Charlize Theron may be up for roles in the film.
The plot synopsis for the Alfred Hitchcock original reads,
“Just before hosting a dinner party, Philip Morgan (Farley Granger) and Brandon Shaw (John Dall) strangle a mutual friend to death with a piece of rope, purely as a Nietzsche-inspired philosophical exercise.

A new David FIncher rumour: he’s reportedly set to remake Alfred Hitchcock’s Rope, with Charlize Theron lined up for a starring role.
Another week, another David Fincher rumour. Given how many stories we’ve heard of late regarding Fincher’s next project for Netflix, we’re beginning to wonder if the Fight Club filmmaker is orchestrating a disinformation campaign worthy of Project Mayhem, the anarchist movement from his 1999 masterpiece.
Recent weeks have seen stories emerge that suggested Fincher would be remaking Squid Game, the hit South Korean Netflix show as an English language film. Just a few days ago, a story appeared that claimed he would be making a western next titled Bitteroot, modelled after the style of Clint Eastwood’s 1992 classic, Unforgiven. Oh, and it doesn’t seem like that long ago since reports suggested that his next film would be a remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s Strangers On A Train.

One night, I happened to be in the same movie theater as Gary Oldman watching Blue Jasmine. We weren’t together in a formal sense, but we were sharing the experience of leaving the house, going to the cinema and watching something unfold before our eyes. You just don’t get that at home – and not just because Gary Oldman has turned down every invite I’ve sent. But people of a certain generation will always champion going to the theater to see a movie; now, Kevin Bacon is taking a stand to join the cause.
In a new video, Kevin Bacon records himself coming out of a daytime showing of Strange Darling, saying it was the third movie he had seen at the theater that week (along with Blink Twice and Alien: Romulus). And while he loved all of these and had nothing but praise for the filmmakers, he...

The hit dystopian series Squid Game is getting an English-language film remake – and it’s reportedly David Fincher’s next project for Netflix.
What’s director David Fincher’s next film? According to a new report, it’s an English-language remake of Squid Game, the dystopian TV series that was a huge hit for Netflix in 2023.
There have been reports of a film version of the South Korean series for a while, and according to World Of Reel, David Fincher has been quietly developing his take on it since 2021. What’s a little surprising is the suggestion that Squid Game has taken priority over all the other projects Fincher has in the works, including a Chinatown prequel series, written by Robert Towne shortly before he died, and the director’s long-mooted remake of Strangers On A Train.

I remember the moment I realized how much I love television. It was March 2, 2014, and for the first time in years, I skipped the Oscar telecast completely. I did it to watch a new episode of "True Detective," which was nearing the end of its phenomenal, influential, heavily-discussed first season. The show's grip on American pop culture that year was incredible: It won five Emmys, inspired countless parodies, and lit up the internet with theories and Easter egg hunts. People read Robert W. Chambers' "The King in Yellow" after the word "Carcosa" popped up in the show. Viewers made gifs and edits of every single shot of Matthew McConaughey's hilariously bleak protagonist. And, importantly, people in Hollywood clearly started searching for the next "True Detective."
In the years that followed the show's first season, a whole host of TV series appeared that clearly followed the "True Detective" rulebook: Slow-burn criminal investigations,...

When it comes to separating art from the artist, you might find yourself between a rock and a hard place—or perhaps between a director’s chair and a moral conundrum. Zoë Kravitz is no stranger to the fact that admiring Roman Polanski’s films is a bit controversial, to say the least.
In a recent Esquire profile, the Blink Twice writer/director tackled the elephant in the room: Can we keep loving the art that controversial figures create while still condemning their actions? Well, in Kravitz’s world, it’s all about the art, even if it means accepting that sometimes “somebody bad was involved in something good”.

Especially poignant was her defense of Roman Polanski’s work. After all, he directed cinematic treasures like Rosemary’s Baby and The Tenant, films Kravitz adores despite their creator’s not-so-favorable reputation.

Though his personal tragedies and demons have sometimes overshadowed his work, there’s no denying the impact Oscar-winning director Roman Polanski has had on cinema.
Born in 1933 in Paris and raised in Poland, Polanski’s childhood was marked by tragedy when he was separated from his parents during the Holocaust. As a child, he escaped the Krakow ghetto after his mother was killed in an Auschwitz gas chamber. When the war ended, he was reunited with his father and returned home.
He turned to filmmaking as a student, making his directorial debut with the international hit “Knife in the Water” (1962), which earned an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. His followup, the psychological thriller “Repulsion” (1965), was an even bigger hit, and he was soon drafted by Hollywood to direct the occult horror film “Rosemary’s Baby” (1968), which earned him a Best Adapted Screenplay bid.

One of the oldest restaurants in Los Angeles, once frequented by stars like Mae West, prominent politicians, and the city’s powerbrokers, was severely damaged by fire during the early morning hours Saturday.
The Pacific Dining Car restaurant, a century-old a building on the outskirts of downtown Los Angeles, was a replica of a railway train car. In its heyday, it was a fixture of fine dining in L.A. and appeared in television shows and movies, including 1974’s Chinatown starring Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway, and the 2001 film Training Day, with Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke.
The restaurant was shuttered during the pandemic, but the family vowed to bring it back, even after auctioning off items from it. Last year, the vacant building officially became a historic cultural monument in the city of Los Angeles.
