Shares of mighty Alphabet are down about 7% today after the U.S. Department of Justice said it should sell its Chrome web browser among other remedies after the tech giant lost a landmark antitrust case last summer.
Government lawyers said in a filing that splitting Google’s dominant search engine from Chrome, which controls about two-thirds of the browser market, as well as from its Android operating system, is necessary to ensure a competitive Internet.
The filing comes after U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta in San Francisco ruled in August that Google had violated antitrust laws “by maintaining its monopoly” on product markets including search. “After having carefully considered the witness testimony and evidence, the court reaches the following conclusion: Google is a monopolist, and it has acted as one to maintain its monopoly,” Mehta wrote. “It has violated Section 2 of the Sherman Act.”

Now that Donald Trump has been re-elected to a second (and perhaps final?) term, some Americans are getting ready to Resist once again. They will lobby their representatives to push back on Trump’s excesses. They will attend protests and wave signs. They will volunteer for Democratic causes. They will passionately call out the president’s latest norm-breaking when talking with friends and family — as well as argue with strangers on social media.
This article is not for those people.
This is for those of you who feel like: I already did all that! For four years! And he’s still back!
We get it. We’re not judging. You feel pre-spent, and are not alone in simply wanting to tune out. Last time, Trump fatigue took a couple of years. It’s only been a few weeks since the election and Trump 2.0 immediately feels exhausting. It’s like...

The tech giant has considered crafting its own smart TVs in the past, and the idea may be coming back to life.
Despite pledges of high tariffs from President-elect Trump, Apple is plotting out an ambitious future for itself. The iPhone manufacturer is planning a new suite of smart home hardware and software, and if those plans bear fruit in the future, it could even bring back previous plans to develop a new line of smart TVs. A new report from Bloomberg has details about Apple’s strategy to embed itself further into the lives of its customers, and what would have to happen for it to consider making a smart TV of its own.
Key Details: Apple is hard at work developing a new smart home setup, resembling Amazon Echo Hub or Google Nest Hub. If that hub is successful, the company might move on to the manufacturing of new smart TVs.

It’s been 12 years since Nick Lowe released a new album, but the venerated 75-year-old rock & roll sophisticate is back on his game with Indoor Safari. It’s an album of clever, lovingly crafted tunes steeped in Fifties rockabilly and the early-Sixties British Invasion greats, sounds he’s been channeling and reinventing since he was a leader of the U.K. pub-rock and punk scene in the mid-1970s. He sets the tone with “Went to a Party,” an image of an older gentleman throwing on his suit and boldly...

Apple now allows podcast fans to stream their favorite shows through a web browser, a complement to the Podcast apps on Apple devices.
Apple has decoupled its popular Podcast apps from its own iPhone and iPad devices, allowing anyone with an Apple account to stream thousands of on-demand shows from any web browser.
In a note sent to podcast publishers on Monday, Apple affirmed it had launched a web version of Podcasts, which works in popular web browsers like Safari, Google Chrome, Firefox and Microsoft Edge, among others.
“With the full Apple Podcasts experience on the web, listeners can sign in with their Apple Account and get access to their Library, Up Next queue, and subscriptions,” a spokesperson for Apple said in the note, a copy of which was obtained by The Desk. “They get personalized recommendations and notifications about new episodes, and can follow shows and save play progress...

Right now, the feature seems to be restricted to Immersive Videos where users want to find more info about their Vision Pro.
For over a decade, Apple users have been able to easily share web links between an iPhone and an Apple computer with Continuity features, allowing you to start a task on one device and finish it on another. The Apple TV tvOS, however, has never allowed you to access a web browser (Safari or otherwise), making it impossible to share content from your Apple TV to other devices. But all of that is about to change with tvOS 18. With the update – released to developers on Monday – Apple users enjoying Immersive Videos designed for the Apple Vision Pro, can now open links that provide more info on their headsets on their iPhone, previewing how the new feature could work.
Key Details: tvOS 18 will soon allow users to open web links on their iPhone.

Bravo New World: Seidl Returns with Desolate Portrait of Fallen Hustler
There’s always a healthy thread of humor lurking under the despair of Ulrich Seidl’s films, both documentary and otherwise, and this is most certainly the case in his long awaited return to narrative filmmaking with Rimini, a cross-cultural portrait of a hustler hit with a karma bullet. It’s been nearly a decade since Seidl unleashed his perversely enjoyable Paradise trilogy, though his documentary features have continued to unspool, as with the surprisingly sweet In the Basement (2014) and the disturbing Safari (2016). The groundwork of his latest feature is basically the story of a failed playboy gone to seed reuniting with his daughter, though undercurrents of cultural trauma bubble up sporadically.…...

San Francisco, Aug 11 (Ians) Meta-owned photo-sharing platform Instagram is capable of tracking its users’ actions, text choices and even text input, such as passwords and confidential credit card information, if they visit a link inside the app, says a new report.
The analysis conducted by Felix Krause found that both Instagram and Facebook on iOS use their own in-app browser rather than the one offered by Apple for third-party apps.
Most apps use Apple’s Safari for loading websites, but Instagram and Facebook have been using their own in-app browser to load websites within the app, reports MacRumors.
With their custom-built browser, still based on WebKit, Instagram and Facebook inject a tracking JavaScript code-named “Meta Pixel” into all links and websites shown. With that code, Meta has total freedom to track users’ interactions without their explicit consent, Krause found.
This allows Instagram to monitor everything happening on external websites without the user’s consent,...

San Francisco, Feb 1 (Ians) Apple has released a Chrome extension for Windows users, called iCloud Passwords, that allows them to use the same strong Safari passwords they create on iPhones, iPads or Macs when visiting websites in Chrome on your Windows PC.
For those who uses Chrome as their browser and iCloud Keychain instead of a dedicated password manager, this could ease their life between Windows and Mac computers.
"iCloud Passwords allows you to use the same strong Safari passwords you create on your Apple device, with Chrome on Windows," Apple said in an updade.
The new extension is now available in the Chrome Web Store.
The passwords created in Chrome for Windows will sync back to iCloud so they'll be available on Apple devices as well.
"iCloud Passwords also saves any new passwords you create in Chrome to your iCloud Keychain so that it is also available on your Apple devices,...

As James Bond prepares for his 23rd official outing in Skyfall and to mark next year’s 50th Anniversary of one of the most successful movie franchises of all time I have been tasked to take a retrospective look at the films that turned author Ian Fleming’s creation into one of the most recognised and iconic fictional characters in film history.
Back in 1961 nobody could have foreseen the success and longevity that James Bond would go on to enjoy in the years that followed. At the time, film producer Albert R. Broccoli, who was reeling from being declared bankrupt after the box-office failure of his most recent picture The Trails of Oscar Wilde, was on the lookout for an idea for his next project. When asked by his wife Dana what he really wanted to do, he replied “I have always wanted to film the Ian Fleming James Bond...

Alexa here dropping in from Pop Elegantiarum again. I recently found this great publicity photo of Janet Leigh in a thrift store. Apparently the film it was shot for, Safari, was a bit of a dud, but I had to have it. I mean, check out those legs, so famously shot by Orson Welles in Touch of Evil! Then I was up all night the other night and I caught John Carpenter's The Fog, and while it was the perfect thing to watch at 3 a.m., I realized that this woman's career ran the gamut from classic to crap. I started wondering what my favorite Janet Leigh performance might be. While not the best of films, I think Holiday Affair might top my list because of the thick sexual tension between her an Robert Mitchum, plopped in the middle a saintly Christmas story. What are your favorites?...
