“The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” is making some changes to its writers’ room.

Head writer Mason Steinberg is stepping down from the role, which he’s held since 2022, while former head writer A.D. Miles will return to the post, TheWrap has learned.

Miles previously served as head writer on Jimmy Fallon’s late night programming between “Late Night” and “The Tonight Show” on NBC from 2009–2017. The move comes after Chris Miller became “The Tonight Show” showrunner in 2022. He replaced Jamie Granet-Bederman at the time.

In his tenure working with the former “Saturday Night Live” star-turned-late night host, Miles became known in part for his work in front of the camera, appearing in popular “Ew!” sketches as Fallon’s stepfather Gary alongside A-list guests like Taylor Swift, Michelle Obama, Drew Barrymore and Emma Stone. Paul Masella, who is the co-head writer and head monologue writer, remains in his position. Masella, who was also a writer on The Late Show with David Letterman and Saturday Night Live, has been writing for the NBC show since 2016.

Miles has a long history with Fallon; he was head writer of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, which aired between 2009-2014, and then moved with the former SNL star to The Tonight Show, where he was head writer between 2014-2017. In all, he has written on more than 750 episodes of late-night television with the host.

Netflix, under the tutelage of VP of game development Mike Verdu, is taking its first steps into mobile play.

Beginning today, subscribers will be able to access a total of five games within its Android app -- two of which are based on Netflix's hit Stranger Things franchise, plus three original titles. They are: Stranger Things: 1984 (created by game studio BonusXP), Stranger Things 3: The Game (BonusXP), Shooting Hoops (courtesy of Vancouver design studio Frosty Pop), Card Blast (from Amuzo & Rogue Games), and Teeter Up (Frosty Pop).

Players need only a Netflix membership to play, and games won’t tout ads or in-app purchases, Netflix says. For now, games are only available on Android, where a new 'Games' row and tab will allow players to download any of the above titles. iOS availability is reportedly en route.

Netflix has released its first slate of mobile games to all subscribers worldwide on Android, Mike Verdu, Netflix’s vp game development, said Tuesday.

Sony Pictures has sold “The Mitchells vs. The Machines,” an original animated family film from producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, to Netflix.

At one point, Sony changed the name from “The Mitchells vs. The Machines” to “Connected,” but it has reverted back to its original title. Sony had planned to release the film theatrically before Netflix acquired worldwide rights. The deal, which excludes China, was reportedly hammered out for more than $100 million. The streamer looks at a show’s viewership versus its cost and decided not to move forward with a second season, according to a source with knowledge of the decision to cancel the series.

Hoops, from creator Ben Hoffman, Phil Lord, Chris Miller & 20th TV, premiered on August 21.

The first project under that deal will be the animated series “Blue Eye Samurai,” which has been ordered to series at the streamer. Geeen co-created the series along with Amber Noizumi. The only problem is that every time she says something nice about her horse, two bumbling ranch hands do something awful to its remains. First, they drop Zipper’s massive body off the side of their truck. Coronavirus has halted production on many projects in Hollywood, but not animation. Animated series have been largely unaffected by shutdowns, with animators and voice artists alike being able to perform their duties from home. Though Netflix claims that their 2020 slate will go ahead uninhibited, it’s fair to assume many other networks and streaming services will be turning toward animated projects to fill programing schedules. Many animated pilots that would have had an uphill battle to be picked up by a network may just find themselves in luck.

There is, pointedly, not very much to “Hoops.” Netflix’s new comedy, from creator Ben Hoffman and executive producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, has about as much ambition and patience as its lackadaisical, hotheaded main character. Ben (executive producer Jake Johnson) is an abrasive Kentucky high school basketball coach whose only real goals in life are to win some games, make his ex-wife (Natasha Leggero) regret their separation and piss off his successful father (Rob Riggle). That he’s only occasionally successful when it comes to alienating his dad rarely bothers him; Ben’s a textbook Teflon man, and tomorrow’s another day. For the most part, both he and the show itself are perfectly happy to stumble through their toxic misadventures and encourage everyone they meet to indulge their basest instincts.

Plenty of comedies have been based on less, and “Hoops” has the advantage of a solid voice...

In today’s TV news roundup, HBO released a teaser and premiere date for “The Undoing,” and Netflix debuted the trailer for “Hoops.”

Casting

Keke Palmer has been cast in Disney Plus’ animated series “The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder.” She will voice Maya Leibowitz-Jenkins, a 14-year-old activist and an adopted daughter of mixed race parents. Other cast members currently include Kyla Pratt, Tommy Davidson, Paula Jai Parker, Jo Marie Payton and Cedric the Entertainer. Bruce W. Smith and Ralph Farquhar will executive produce.

Valerie Mahaffey has joined the cast of David E. Kelley’s ABC series “Big Sky.” She will portray Helen Pergman, a meticulous mother who navigates a contentious relationship with her son Ronald (Brian Geraghty). Earlier this year, Ben Affleck starred in “The Way Back” about a down-on-his-luck former athlete returning to the sport he loves, basketball, to whip a losing high school team into shape on their quest for glory and his own personal redemption. “Hoops” is basically that same story, but animated and with lots more sex and curse words. Oh and seemingly no redemption.

Why Should I Watch? Between “Big Mouth,” “F Is For Family,” and “The Midnight Gospel,” Netflix has a strong slate of adult animated comedies, and that’s without counting the service’s now ended but endlessly re-watchable episodes of “BoJack.” “Hoops,” starring and executive produced by Jake Johnson, looks to join those lofty ranks. Created by Ben Hoffman, “Hoops” follows Coach Ben Hopkins, a “pathetic, angry, foul-mouthed” high school basketball coach who’s convinced he can make it to the big leagues if he can whip his wayward squad into shape. His father, Barry (voiced by Rob Riggle), is a former professional basketball star, and he wants to help his son succeed… even though he knows he’s a long way from being the man he should be. Hard-r hijinks ensue, with Chris Miller and Phil Lord also on board as executive producers.

Netflix is out with its list of everything coming and going in August, and the list includes Season 5 of “Lucifer” and a new film starring Jamie Foxx called “Project Power.”

To their credit, organizers are trying to replicate the commercialized fan-friendly confines of the San Diego Convention Center as much as possible: there is the traditional souvenir book featuring a pretty sweet drawing of Ray Bradbury on a T. Rex on the cover that is available for free .pdf download (and featuring click-through advertisements!), and you can print your own badge (sponsored by Amazon Prime Video!) to wear as you sit in front of your screen at home. Netflix is adding a seriously impressive line-up of content across August. In a bid to keep you indoors and out of the sun, the streaming giant has got a wide range of titles coming to its library next month, including various highly-anticipated original movies and TV shows, as well as countless beloved films that are being added – or are returning – to the site.

We’ve previously had a couple of updates on what to expect in August, but this is the full official list of everything that’s due on Netflix over the course of next month. As we already knew, some of the highlights include Jamie Foxx superhero vehicle Project Power and the fifth and penultimate season of DC’s Lucifer. Now, however, we can see there’s a lot more to look forward to besides just that.

The first day of August, in particular, brings a whole heap of titles.

Hoops now has its premiere date. The series will arrive next month on Netflix. Jake Johnson, best known for his role on Fox's New Girl, stars in this animated series.

Epix announced “By Whatever Means Necessary: The Times of Godfather of Harlem,” a four-part docuseries that explores the music scene of 1960s Harlem and connects it to music trends seen today, will premiere this fall. The series will combine moments from the cabler’s drama series “Godfather of Harlem” with archival footage and interviews to tell the story of Harlem musicians who used their voices, instruments and music as weapons against oppression. Contemporary artists will be featured as well. The docuseries is executive produced by Nina Yang Bongiovi, Forest Whitaker, Kasseem “Swizz Beatz” Dean and Keith McQuirter.

A foul-mouthed basketball coach played by Jake Johnson is the star of Hoops, Netflix’s new animated comedy series from writer and producer Ben Hoffman.

Johnson, who previously worked with Hoffman on New Girl, voices Coach Ben Hopkins, a petty and bad-tempered coach who is desperate to prove himself by training his underperforming high school basketball team into champions. He’s got his work cut out for him: as shown in the series teaser, Hopkins can barely get the ball in the net himself, and not without cussing out the entire court.
