Now the cancellation has been confirmed by Netflix, I thought I'd rework my review of season one of "Daybreak" a little, to post it here. I have a lot of mixed feelings about "Daybreak". There were elements that I liked, elements that I didn't. . but I did watch all of it and I think I'd have watched more, if a second season had been produced.
Following a nuclear/dirty bomb apocalypse that leaves all adults transformed into braindead blood-hungry wraiths, the teenagers of Glendale form themselves into groups based on their social traits or interests and battle for territory. Into this terrain steps outsider Josh Wheeler (Colin Ford) a Canadian student who transferred to the school and as such has no social circle, but he did have a girlfriend, Sam (Sophie Simnett) and he begins a quest to reunite with her.
As I said, there were elements of the show I really liked. It reminded me a lot of the Xbox game "Sunset Overdrive", the mutated humans, the wild gangs of kids with OTT gimmicks, even the skateboarding felt like it might have been a nod. I enjoyed the 4th wall breaking narration and the nods within that to the other films that utilise that device. I thought the visual effects were really good, the CGI work especially is good. My favourite aspect though was how quickly "Daybreak" began playing with the form of the show, passing the narration on to other characters, changing how flashbacks worked and how deceptively intelligent it was with foreshadowing. Another key factor, and the one that probably got me through the run is that I actually liked the characters and was interested in what would happen. There are a couple of romances, a few switched allegiances and some twists along the way.
Where it's less successful is tonally, it is a bit all over the place. There's an episode towards the end that explains the true nature of Sam and Josh's relationship that, whilst making a number of valid (if perhaps a little dated) points about present day social conformity and prejudices - feels wildly out of place in a series with its' Ronin warriors, mutant squirrels and cannibal villains. Some characters earn their redemption arcs whilst other seem to have it foisted upon them with a quick flashback. Also, a few bits of the story disappear without a trace and are never explored or explained.
So yes, kinda wayward and I understand the people that dropped it after a couple of episodes as it does take a bit of getting used to but it had enough for me and if the second season had come to fruition, I'd have been back.

Immediately, you're thrusted into a Ferris Bueller world mixed with a Mad Mad & The Warriors. I am seeing a lot of people turning it off after a few minutes, throwing politics or judging based off their personal beliefs. Not giving this show a chance, because something triggered them.
The show follows Josh Wheeler, a newly transferred student who finds love and when the apocalypse hits, Josh is on the trail to find his love. A bunch of former students, are also on his tail and have now cliques up once again in a gangland scenario to survive and find Josh Wheeler.
The films pulls tons of homages to films like (previously said) Ferris Bueller, Mad Max, The Warriors & subtle quotes and shots to Goodfellas, Kill Bill & more! With violence and language that could be seen in a Deadpool flick, it's a fun absurd black comedy that is fun to loose yourself in.
Put your must be an A+, HARD hitting stories and twists to the side. Drop your political views and whatever issues you have with today's problems, realizes it's an absurd fiction that centers on an almost Zombie like show & have some fun. Because "life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it." Or in Josh's case "it will eat you."

I began watching this with second thoughts, there are a few lines in it that came off as cringey or dumb. But after getting to about the 3rd episode I was hooked. It's hilarious and the writing is great. All around unique and satisfying.

But this show is a blast and it's goofy and fun, has a lot of heart and really feels like the creators' passion project.
No, it's not perfect but it's not trying to be and its quirks are part of its charm. It's a super refreshing take on/ parody of lots of t.v. and movie tropes but pokes fun at them with a respectful wit.
The acting is pretty solid all around, especially considering kid actors usually struggle. The girl that plays Angelica is shockingly good at going from foul mouthed aggressive badass to vulnerable emotional scenes.
I feel like the negative reviewers on here were expecting something super serious and high brow and don't know how to just enjoy a filmmaker having fun with the medium.

There's some fun to this show, mostly in how it doesn't take itself too seriously, and draws on high school movie tropes from the 80s and 90s. It's a form of fiction we haven't seen much of, but the mixture of millennial thinking sort of demonstrates why.
Really, the apocalypse just serves as a wacky setting for a standard high school hi-jinks movie, complete with the original from Ferris Bueller's day off.
Some of the references, and lines are a clash, sometimes as a result the show begins to take itself too seriously again, or it otherwise breaks the mood.
And I feel, it will fall flat on gen z who generally are less caught up in identity, take life less seriously and see it more or less as just another color in the pallet. Equally if falls a bit flat for people who grew up with movies of this town - gen x'ers.
Most millennial's wouldn't care too much for the genre, and progressives would appreciate the inclusion except for the hierarchy driven high school setting re-pleat with its occasional macho direction.
In the end, it sort of feels more like a movie makers pet project, rather than something directed at an actual existing audience.
That said, it's probably better than a lot of stuff on the CW. If you are completely stuck for something to watch, and don't mind something goofy, you could do worse. But if you want something silly you could probably also do a lot better.

I'm not sure why this has such a low rating, but this is a heap of fun. Really tight writing, direction and character development makes "Daybreak" a must watch for anyone who loves their dark comedy.

There are two distinct audience groups for this. Those who are in their teens to mid twenties who came for the high school part and gore, and those 80s kids who came for Ferris. No one is trying to hide the fact that it's so obviously built to some degree around Brodericks reputation and iconic performance. The 4th wall, the high school situation, even the poster screams Ferris Bueller, and then he's cast as the Principal.
To the story then. Hardly credible and pushed to extremes with extra gore and gloopy bits as you'd expect in the zombie genre, it doesn't actually matter to me as one of the 80s generation viewers. I did feel mid series that, though I did get the his and hers cross story line episodes and flashbacks, you started to wonder what the point was besides introducing new ideas for apps, overdoing the stereotyping and sob stories angles. As well as the gradual elimination of golf as a sport.
Would this have worked without Broderick? Not sure. Without him it would have been just another teen series that would appeal to the 16-22y olds.
Maybe I'm being harsh, I did really quite enjoy it, even if I did mainly come to see Broderick. And yes, Ferris I think would have liked it.

There are some aspects I like about the show: the main character is a good actor, there are several funny moments (like the American Ninja Idol stuff), it has a few funny references to cult classics, and it has these kind of meta-elements where characters comment on Daybreak being a Netflix show etc.
It's just... the story doesn't make any sense for me. Like the explanation behind important plot points is just stupid, dumb, and very unsatisfactory. I guess the producers wanted it to be this kind of "ridiculous-funny", but it's definitely not working for me. Some episodes are just extremely random - in a bad way.
Please come out with something better, Netflix 🙁

I don't understand why people are being so hard on this show....but it is much better than the current rating. It's fun...a lot of violence and thrills and laughs...it never tries to be anything other than what it is. I loved it! It seems like EVERY show gets dragged down these days because IMDb is full of so many trolls. Give it a chance.

Daybreak the dystopian future where life is like high school from hell after a blast kills almost everyone over 18. Told in the style of Ferris Bueller's day off even staring Matthew Broderick, the original Ferris. With the adults all gone, the teenagers have divided themselves into clan type groups along their old high school social groups. Josh is a loner, and a big pop culture fan. The series is full of little pop culture Easter eggs that add to an already fun watch. High school meets mad max. Highly recommend for a break from the usual gloomy end of the world drama.

This show starts with promise of being a revisionist/parody mashup of the apocalypse, YA, and HS genres but about half way through devolves into a bad teen drama with interesting set dressing. I would only recommend this series to those who are die hard fans of the HS drama series and watch for the clamminess. This series is just a big clam wrapped in a little apocalypse goo. The final nail in the coffin for this show is the last four or so episodes are heavy handed preaching, and they pretty much give up on story telling.

It's not completely original and it's based on a book but it's a good show. People that only watched 1 or 2 episodes shouldnt be allowed to rate a series. Its ridiculous given the fact a show can find its footing midseason. This show is relevant and pretty comical. The production value is awesome as well. I cant speak too much without spoilers but I say give it a chance past 2 episodes. It's a fun show with a promising cast. I can only imagine where it goes next season.

Look, it isn't breaking bad or GOT but it is a very decent time killer. Made me laugh at least twice an episode. I enjoyed the frequent breaking of the fourth wall, the gross humour and expectation flipping.

I enjoyed the show. It has a good rhythm, nice aesthetic, funny jokes and editing.
I definitely recomend watching it if you want a light, paced comedy to binge watch.
One problem is that it's way too cringy. The love story is cliche which makes it funny. But then it lingers, ... And the music ... and the framing.... It does not work. In the end it becomes so bad it's almost funny again, but with a big cringe.
And finally there are a few things I'm not sure to understand. What's up with all the constant hammering of LGBQT, Womanpower, ... etc. I hope it is meant to be part of the parody, because it is HEAVY. I'm all for equality, people love whoever they want and it's good to promote it, but do we need to be that moronic when doing so ? If it was the intention of the crew to promote those ideas, i'm pretty sure that the movie is counterproductive. It sometime feels like watching a 1960s propaganda commercial, and I get that some people get frustrated by that.

It's got a smart idea and great acting but the idea didn't quite produce a ride worth taking. With vomit worthy teenage "love" stories and an attempt at a moral lesson that's just a cry of desperation I found myself begging for it to be over. But I couldn't stop watching! I was hoping it'd be worth it at the end. It wasn't. If you do plan on giving it a try, feel free to skip over EVERY SINGLE FLASHBACK!!! They add absolutely nothing worthy to the storyline. I may be cynical, or maybe I just have a low threshold for BS.

A lot of negative reviews here.
I thought it was a fun and nostalgic show. Had a lot of 80s and 90s movie vibes. No, the acting wasn't Oscar-worthy but given the synopsis would you really expect that?
It was easy to binge-watch, it was entertaining, not your usual apocalyptic story of zombies. Yeah, it's full of stereotypes but who cares? Don't be so sensitive.

This is not a bad series. It has it's charm. Some of the visual effects are rather fun. (Especially when Josh gets the keys. You'll know what I mean if you watch it).
The way the show is narrated. (The protagonist Josh looking into the camera and talking about his past.) Is very Ferris Bueller. And I guess the writers knew what they were doing by casting Matthew Broderick as the the Principal.
The whole apocalypse feel of the wasteland in the show screams Turbo Kid. The main bad guy is even called Turbo. That can't be coincidence.
The script at times feels like it has been written by a 40+ person trying to sound cool. Using the word "Pwned" in 2019?... no.
I would recommend the show. But I would seriously watch Turbo Kid first. As it's a superior watch.

Its a fun bit of entertainment for those who aren't tv snobs. The main hero is so-so, I never really cared much about his story and his mission. Because of that I wasnt sure I'd get past the first episode but all the supporting characters are what bring the show to life. The more I saw of them the more I wanted to watch.
I hope we get to see more of Angelica, Ms. crumble, Wesley, Mona Lisa, Turbo, ect in season 2. sadly no Eli :(

This was a fun show. It got a little cheesy and long winded, but it was also entertaining. They set it up for a potential second season, but from the looks of it, it's probably not gonna happen. This show has mature content, so not all young teens should watch it.

I'm one of those guys that doesn't really care for zombie apocalypse shows. However, this show seems to take it into a completely different direction and the references to Ferris Bueller's Day off is completely awesome. If you bugged out in the first couple episodes then you missed some truly brilliant writing. Take another look and enjoy the ride.
Netflix you've done it again. No D+ for me, keep rocking it!
